Ten years ago today, “American Idol” debuted as a fill-in Fox summer TV reality show.
I read some of the stories from the time. Expectations were modest. “Idol” did not send out an advance copy of the first episode, which made TV writers at the time instantly suspicious.
The Chicago Tributne: “American Idol” (8 p.m., WFLD-Ch. 32), copied from a British hit called “Pop Idol,” operates under the flawed assumption that this nation wants or needs another treacly pop star. Don’t the producers know that Celine Dion is back from exile and only one of the ‘N Sync boys is planning to go to space?
The Cleveland Plain Dealer: How bad is “ American Idol“? Well, we learned long ago not to ask how low Fox will go.
The Salt Lake Tribune: Fox mailed a short clip of the program to television critics, and, oh daddy, the cringe factor is really high — for the viewer, too. This is the show for those who truly love the sight of someone making an unintentional fool of themselves.
And it’s interesting to hear how Nigel Lythgoe spun the show before it first aired to the Los Angeles Times:
Lythgoe maintains that “American Idol” is less a talent show and more a slice of human drama, “like the kid who turned up and said to the judges, ‘Both my parents are deaf and they’ll never hear me sing.’ And he sang ‘When I Fall in Love’ and signed it at the same time. It was just beautiful.”
I recall the two TV writers at the AJC at the time passed on covering the show so they handed me some early advance tapes (in VCR form!) Fox did send out in June. Believe it or not, I still have them.
The PR person at “Idol” also informed me of five folks who were from the Atlanta area.
So I started tracking them in Peach Buzz.
Here’s the very first thing I ever wrote about “Idol,” which ran in Peach Buzz June 17, 2002:
‘Idol‘ has five Atlantans
Atlantans heavily populate the Fox television show “American Idol, ” which seeks to find the “best” singer/performer via popular vote. Of the 30 semifinalists, five are from the Atlanta area.
So far, the twice-weekly summer replacement series has done well amid a sea of repeats. Tuesday at 8:30 p.m., the first group of 10 will sing individually, and viewers will vote whether they’re worthy of moving to the next round.
Among the 10 will be Christopher Aaron, 23, of Duluth (a fan of Brandy) and teacher Tamyra Gray, 22, of Norcross (who loves Prince). R.J. Helton of Cumming, Melanie Noelle of Atlanta and an Atlantan who goes only by Jamar are the three other competing locals who will be shown on later episodes.
On my 33rd birthday, June 21, 2002, I wrote about Gray, who would ultimately finish fourth:
Norcross’ singing ‘Idol‘
Norcross resident Tamyra Gray blew away her crooning competitors in the first semifinal round of “American Idol, ” a twice-weekly Fox show that takes elements from Ed McMahon’s old “Star Search” and adds a dollop of edgy nastiness (or simple honesty) from a panel of judges.
Gray (left), competing for one of three finalist slots along with nine others, including Duluth pal Christopher Aaron, pulled in the most votes out of 3 million cast by the viewing public. The results were announced live Wednesday night.
To get to the finals with gorgeous Ryan Starr and sentimental pick Jim Verraros (who has deaf parents), 22-year-old Gray sang an inspiring version of “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going, ” made famous by torch singer Jennifer Holliday.
Gray told Buzz that she chose that song because her mother, Rita Preston, loves it. When Gray reached her mom on the phone, “all she did was scream and then hang up the phone.”
The judges all predicted Gray would be the top vote-getter. “At the audition in Atlanta, I described her as having the X factor with a capital X, ” said the usually snide British record executive Simon Crowell, one of three judges that culled 10,000 contestants down to 30. “This girl is a star.”
Gray, unlike many of the jilted contestants, of course has nothing bad to say about Crowell. “I’m just a girl from Norcross being who I am. I’m so grateful people actually support me, ” she said.
The ratings for the first episode were solid and away the show went until Kelly Clarkson beat Justin Guarini before more than 23 million viewers, a huge number for a summer show. (I remember being at a Star 94 viewing party at Dave & Busters for that one.)
For folks who watched the show from 2002, what are some of your memories?
For nostalgia’s sake, here’s the first few minutes of episode one from a decade ago:
And check out this story on Billboard.com: “Idol” contestants have had 345 separate titles from 29 different “Idol” contestants reach No. 1 on one of its charts over 10 years for a total of 1,142 weeks. Kelly Clarkson has the most No. 1’s (73), followed by Carrie Underwood (62), Daughtry (38), Fantasia (31) and Ruben Studdard (16).

Interesting fact from MJ’s blog: that infectious song “Call Me Maybe,” which is topping the top 40 charts, is sung by Carly Rae Jepsen, who finished third season five of “Canadian Idol.”

And Deirdre, that “Sunday Night Cram ‘em all in” syndrome kills me too. Need something good to watch on Fri/Sat nights (not everyone is a bar hopper or party guy/gal). I’d really like to see all the Downton’s again, but “Falling Skies” is back next week, and I’d like to watch rather than tape it. Monday’s are usually that way for me as well, especially when the “winter” editions of “The Closer” have been on – too many choices, not enough time to watch a bunch of recorded stuff. Guess that’ll be what retirement is for, if there’s still enough to interest me to record by then.

Simon: “We’re going to show the audition process as it really is.”
other than the fact that they try and make people think the judges are there for the cattle call sessions and omit the intermediate audition –
and often have the cattle calls in one city and the judges’ auditions in another –
other than that… they pretty much show the audition process as it really is.

Idol’s presence was fairly noticeable in the sports world this weekend.
Jessica Sanchez performed the national anthem for the big boxing match (Pacquio vs Bradley). She did a great job as usual. I was at Hudson Grill (Midtown) to watch the fight. The people in the bar gave her a nice ovation after her performance. That’s rare for a bunch of sports dudes.
As a result of the controversial decission from the judges, ESPN compared that to American Idol voters. They mentioned Sanjaya and the overall “head-scratching” decissions that Idol voters make from year to year. LOL!!!
I can’t make this stuff up. I’ll try and find the video and write-up some time today.

Sam. you can watch a show while recording 1, 2 or 3 shows at the same time. Or you can record 4 shows at the same time and watch 0.
As long as you’re not in the house to watch anything, that’s fine. I rarely find four shows i want to watch at the same time anyway, so it’s rarely an issue.

Interesting to see that already ten years ago, Simon “Crowell” talked about X-factor.
The clueless TV-writers who didn;t care about “Idol”, who were they? Are they still with the AJC?
If I was a TV-writer and I heard of a new show that had been a huge sucess in another country (”Pop Idol” in England, “Robinson” in Sweden – it became “Survivor” here) I think I would be a wee bit interested,

@Harriet. You don’t need a rewind. It’s real simple. Once Idol jumped the shark by allowing singing musicians to participate, The whole game changed. Just my personal opinion, but most mucians that happen to sing, are vocally not as strong as those singers that do not play instruments. THAT is the major difference that I have noticed over the years.

So far, no other singing competition show has managed to live up to Idol. I imagine that people who have stopped watching Idol are tired of that particular genre of show so they wouldn’t be all that interested in other competition shows. And Idol managing to remain a relatively simple concept rather than the high-concept The Voice or the almost sleazy X-Factor helps Idol remain on top of the ratings war.
I don’t doubt that X-Factor will draw a big audience this fall with the Britney addition but will they manage to hold on to it?

I started with the very first show and never missed one yet, even when I was in the hospital on opening week last year, and when I was in emergency room 3 years ago with dislocared/shattered/broken wrist, my boss took me to hospital, and he called my sister to come and relayed my message (misted with pain!) to be sure and set her dvr up for Idol so I wouldn’t miss it.
2 or 3 years ago one of the lesser ATL stations ran Idol Rewind, with season’s 1 & 2 – a little bit edited, I think they only showed maybe one episode of the auditions from each season. It was on about 7:00 on Sunday evenings. Really nice to revisit Idol the way it should have stayed. And refreshing to see again Simon, when asked who he thought should win Season 1, saying “If America gets it right, absolutely Kelly Clarkson”.

Sam-A, I have U-Verse. I’ve never really had any problems with it. The internet can be a little slow at times, but for TV viewing, it’s awesome. Like Rickster said, the DVR can record 4 things at the same time, which is a lot. Because of this, their DVRs have to have a lot of storage space. It comes in very handy for me.
D, you nailed it. I think Idol succeeds in what other shows fail. People watch Idol and SYTYCD for the same reason…yes it’s about “finding a star” but also, it’s about the journey and the connections that the viewers make with the contestants. The Voice had potential, but it evolved into being more about the judges which is, imo, one of the reasons it lost so much steam. That as the “make up as you go rules” which were extremely manipulative and annoying. Duets is also suffering from that problem, imo. It’s hard to capture that without seeming too much of a copycat..

What happened to JT while I was gone?
Back from Prometheus. Sorry Mercedes, I was not that impressed and I so much wanted to be. The search for human creation leads to the aliens who found(or maybe created) the big bad ALIEN species. Noomi Rapace is good as the Dr. who wants answers but I prefer Weaver as Ripley, the woman who doesn’t need answers, just knows these sacks of youknowwhat have to die.
The movie is beautifully filmed but slow as molasses. The haunted house feeling never gets going and it only has a few really good scares, and a couple of truly icky scenes.
Alien still tops my sci-fi list. Prometheus doesn’t even make the top 10.

Orlando, I agree. Simon took a very long time to warm up to Kelly. He was also very fond of Christina Christian. Did you know that Kelly has invited Tamyra up on stage with her a few times? The two of them singing together is really fun to watch. And yes, Tamyra was, is, still a great singer. Season one was blessed with 2 really great voices.
That being said, Kelly had the better performance skills.
Maybe today we should pick the best female singers to grace the show. I think we’ll find a lot more during the first half of the 11 seasons than we’ll find in the second half.

Record 4 shows as long as you were watching one of them, or 3 and watch something “live.” They advertise the ability to save 100 hours of programming on the DVR but I think we had more than that. Also had the ability to pause a live show or rewind part of a show you were watching “live”, if there was something you wanted to see or hear again, then catch back up to “real” time.
The only real negative is AT&T’s crappy customer service! (And that’s putting it mildly!!)

Thanks, Highlander. I can do the live tv stuff, but as Deirdre said, that “record 4″ is a great feature! And if I went to that system, I’d have to have the “wireless” feature, so I could move the location of the tv if I wanted to. Keep getting all these letters with “bundle” deals from AT&T, and already have their internet and land system. I just have to make sure they have all the upper channels that I watch on Comcast, like “Reelz”, the 5 or 6 “Encore” movie channels (they get some movies really quickly, and not an extra charge for them), DIY, Nat’l Geo, Style, etc.

1. Kelly Clarkson
2. Melinda Doolittle

4. Tamyra Grey
5. Katharine McPhee
6. Kimberly Locke
7. Carly Smithson/Diana DeGarmo

Deirdre: Not a bad list! I’d move a couple around and leave off a couple, but all in all, pretty good! Glad to see you put Carly S. on – she had a wonderful voice, and a cute stage presence. Went way too early! And I also really liked Kimberly Locke – her “Where the Boys Are” was just lovely.

I liked Tamyra – she was adorable, and the clothes she wore were “classy rock star” – I wanted some of them! She always looked so cute. I really liked her voice, but didn’t care for some of the songs she chose, ie “A House is Not a Home”, “And I’m…..” – not the kind of songs I like to listen to. Kelly, on the other hand, had this WOW voice, and had great song choices. I did think it’d be a battle between the two, with Kelly of course the winner, but I guess the young girls were already there, voting for “cute” Justin.

Thanks for link at 8:12, D., I learned so much from it. That note at 1:16 – where did that come from? Looked at comments below clip and found this huge debate about “whistle register” so I googled that.
Did I get an education – flageolet, phonate, arytenoids… I didn’t know that the Queen of the Night Aria in Mozart’s “Zauberflöte”calls for pitches up to F6… Maria Carey and Minni Ripperton are the best known whistle registers, but a man, Adam Lopez (back-up to Maria) holds the Guiness record for the title of “highest vocal note”, C#8 (a half step above the C in the 8th octave)

As for Deirdre’s Best Female Vocals list, I’d remove Allison Iraheta (I heard her live; it was 30 mins of screech and screams), and add Jennifer Hudson at 4 and move everybode else down a step.
And to make a true Top Ten list, I’d leave off Jordin Sparks.
Sam-A

Minnie Ripperton, after Fword, is my most unfavorite female singer in history – that glass-breacking scream of hers is absolutely ear-splitting. And that “Loving You” song of hers – my fingers can’t get to the button fast enough to switch if it comes on the radio, which thankfully, is pretty rare.
Deirdre
June 12th, 2012

Yep, that note was really something…had no idea there was such a thing as “whistle register” but that note would definitely qualify!
I think JHud is a really good singer now. I thought she had a couple of really good performances on Idol but most were mediocre, imo. That’s why she’s not on the list. If she was the singer she is now, she’d definitely make it.
And Harriett. I think I was just trying to show that there has been few females in the last 3 or 4 seasons who really live up to the stellar list of girls we had to choose from before that. Another reason why I believe it’s not just the guitar.

As for the non-stellar girls, did y’all notice that EVERY year during Simon’s reign, he had to get a girl in there on looks alone? Cawcaw the worst of the bunch. Others, like Christina Christian, were just weak-voiced. Deirdre, maybe you could come up with a list of them too!

Sam-A, beg to differ about Minnie Ripperton – I absolutely loved her voice. Wonder if her daughter, Maya Rudolph, can sing?
Learned on my google quest for “whistle register” that babies and small children all have this – which may be a reason why some folks can’t stand kids’ “screaming”. I know high-pitched kids get on my nerves.

Mercedes, I like the challenge of a “Pretty but can’t sing list.” The only problem with that list is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Also, I find that there were some girls on Idol who were pretty and weren’t bad singers, just not “powerhouses” but merely “very good.” I tried to have one per season, but that was difficult in some cases. With that said, I put forth my list out for critique:
Season 1: Ryan Starr and Nikki McKibbin
Season 2: Kimberly Caldwell
Season 3: Jasmine Trias
Season 4: Lindsey Cardinale
Season 5: Lisa Tucker and Melissa McGhee
Season 6: Haley “Hot Pants” Scarnato
Season 7: Kristy Lee Cook and Ramiele Malubay (Brook White to some extent)
Season 8: Megan “Caw! Caw!” Joy
Season 9 Paige Miles and Didi Benami (Tho, I did like Didi’s voice…it was a bit weak)
Seasons 10 and 11 are those where there weren’t that many weak singers and in seasons past. For me, they felt pretty evenly matched in that the contestants where very good in what they styles. For example, I’d vote for Pia in Season 10, but I don’t think she’s a bad singer at all…just a little bit “safe” and dull.

I’m late on a couple of discussions today, but my favs on Idol to this point are:
1.Jessica Sanchez – Just a complete versatile vocalist.
2.Tamyra Grey – Loved her look, poise, and control. She knew who she was as an artist.
3.Melinda Doolittle – One of the best talents I’ve experienced on the show.
4.Fantasia – Pure soul singer. True to her strengths as a vocalists.
5.Mandisa – Much like JHud, with a rich voice and plenty of power.
6.Jennifer Hudson – Had lower register like no other.
7.Kelly Clarkson – Complete powerhouse.
8.Crystal Bowersox – The only W”G”WG I was a fan of…*snicker*
9.Carrie Underwood – One of the few country artists I like.
10.Kimberly Locke – She was just a “solid” performer. Pretty too.
11.Pia Toscano – Yeah she was a strong singer, but…….it’s a guy thing. IDC
12.Katharine McPhee – She really had talent with all of those good looks.

Hold on Rickster, wouldn’t those be 5th and 6th, in essence continuing from last week? Or do you stop counting after 4 days, unless it takes 4 days for the next death to occur? Seems we have had a steady stream of forgotten “celebrities” passing away over the past few months. So, do we total all those up and hope the number is divisible by 3 because in the past this myth needed several months for it to “work”.
Regarding the: “Pretty but can’t sing list” Idol voters tend to get rid of the real beauties (with marginal ability) very early. Most don’t even crack the top 12.

Sam-A, that was really nice of you to say! I really do appreciate it! I’m glad Carrie shared her opinion, which I’m sure doesn’t come with some backlash. But, imo, exemplifies what it means to be a Christian for me. Oh, and the name of the show was The Event. I didn’t watch it, but I did like FlashForward at the beginning and was disappointed when it got cancelled. Had a lot of promise, it just failed in the execution.
bknsty14, lol. I do agree on Bleeding Love and though Hollie did great with The Climb. All these lists are so subjective, but that’s what makes the debates such fun.

I’ll agree with JT on Kat’s Black Horse and a Cherry Tree. To me, that performance answered all her critics that she couldn’t do modern material
Cookie sing Hello was when I sat up and took notice of him.
And like her newest persona or not, Fantasia’s Summertime was perfection.
Clay’s Solitaire was amazing.
Adam’s Tears of a Clown
Phil’s Volcano
Anything Melinda sang.
Michael John’s It’s All Wrong but It’s Alright(ok he’s the same season as Cookie but I HAD to mention it)
Constantine’s I Can’t Make You Love Me

Whoa, Twin Jen: Where is Ms Kelly Clarkson on that list of yours????
K&CF: You’re welcome, and I mean it! And, The Event – I liked that show, and would have liked to see where it was going. Especially liked the Oriential-ish alien who was fighting to help the humans. He’s on another show now, just can’t remember which, but very attractive and an intense actor! Oh, just remembered, he’s on “Hawaii 5-0″, and looking good.
Thanks D – I do remember that part. I’m really excited it’s back – been missing “Walking Dead” way too much.

Wow. No way could I pick just one per season. Except Seasons 3 and 5.
Season 3: Latoya London, All By Myself
Season 4: Carrie, Independence Day and Bless The Broken Road.
Season 5: Kat’s first version of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”. The first time an Idol performance has literally brought tears to my eyes.
Season 6: Lakisha Jones, And I Am Telling You (I’m Not Going). With a close second to Melinda, There Will Come A Day, and Blake Lewis, You Give Love A Bad Name. (I couldn’t stop re-watching that one!)
Season 7: Too many great ones to list. Mike’s “Across the Universe” and “It’s All Wrong But It’s All Right”. Also tied with him: Carly’s “Come Together” and “The Show Must Go On”, and Kristy Lee Cook’s “Anyway”. (The studio version of that is ***wonderful***), David A’s “And So It Goes”, and David C’s “The World I Know”.
Season 8: Adam’s “Tracks of My Tears”, because I loved him from the beginning but this was when the rest of the world took notice. Tied with that: Mad World, Black or White, Ring of Fire, Whole Lotta Love, and One. Honorable mention to Allison’s “Cry Baby”.
Season 9: Siobhan’s “Wicked Game” and “House of the Rising Sun”. Crystal’s “Me And Bobby McGee” and “People Get Ready”. And the CCR song she did in the semis. Casey’s “Mrs. Robinson”. And Lee’s “Hallelujah”. Sorry, but I liked it with the choir and all.
Season 10: Pia’s All By Myself. Haley’s Blue, Bennie and the Jets, Rolling In the Deep, You and I, I (Who Have Nothing) and House of the Rising Sun.
And y’all know my faves from this season. Jess’s I Will Always Love You, Hollie’s The Climb, Rolling In the Deep, and Bleeding Love, Elise’s Whole Lotta Love, and Colton’s Love The Way You Lie.

Deirdre: “And like her newest persona or not, Fantasia’s Summertime was perfection.”
I’m still not sold on it. I’ve gone back a few times over the years and tried to “get” what has been called by many the greatest performance ever on Idol, and I don’t get it. Even before all the drama of the last few years. Now, if she did it with her current figure and… yes folks… those ripped pants = perfection!
Otherwise, your selections for Cook and Adam are spot on, and your opinion of Melinda is too. Michael and Constantine never did anything for me, one was decent (the tennis player) the other made me throw up a little in my mouth everytime I saw him.

LOL JT!
I liked Constantine better when I didn’t look at him. The guy had a good voice but shot himself in the foot with a cheese gun.
As a former theater person, Summertime from Porgy and Bess is a heart-wrenching song when sung correctly. It was like Fantasia knew what it was about and maybe she did. Rodney gave high praise to her performance in the musical version of The Color Purple and I think she should have stuck with theater instead of going wherever the hell she went. Sausage World.

Well I don’t know what you guys favorite picks after 10yrs of idol but I know that the Best performance EVER on TV period was None other than The Daughter of the KING OF ROCK N ROLL HIMSELF..yes thats right..the amazing fantastic..out of body experience..performance of a Life time MS LISA MARIE PRESLEY! oh..my..GOD! I was floored! Days after her Stunning performance all I could do was Swoon I just didnt know what to say(Actually I said quite a bit the next day after her performance)..she left me breathless! Was I dreaming? I dont ever want to wake up!
Did the King’s daughter Actually Perform on this flimsy little cheap show like American Idol? If anyone saved American Idol from being dead in the water..it was Lisa Marie. Yall HEARD?
I wonder if she will ever grace AI stage again? LISA Please SAVE American Idol we Need You!..Forget the Judges and these tacky contestants..Bring BACK ELVIS’ daughter! LISA MARIE.. Thats MS PESLEY if YOUR NASTY!
Ok..I just had to get that off my chest I feel so much better now..Long Live the Queen of Rock and Roll, Madonna Who? Lady Ga Ga WHAT? ROOF ROOF!

I’m sure some saw, but here is Pia singing the National Anthem last night. She does have a great voice and though she was shaky on “rockets red glare”, the rest is spot on. And what I liked the most about it is that she just sang it. No show boating or grand-standing or unnecessary runs. It’s the F****N’ National Anthem! Just sing it.

Ok..now to be serious
..the best performances..my pick..Fantasia’s Summertime(she Nailed it and breathed New Life in and ancient beautiful song..it was and still remains her best performance hands down why? because she didnt scream not once..and she has yet to beat it.
Most everything Clay Akien sung and his delivery of a song I liked. No other male had a sweeter voice.(His dont Let the Sun Go Down touched me deep,His version is Second Only to Elton’s Original. I also liked his version of Grease in his lil red jacket LoL..
Ruben was borning. nice voice but boring. No one else even joins this list. Most of them I needed to plug my ears from sound damage to the eardrums screaming their little heads off..just Awful..not singing at all.

I really liked Crystal. She has a very nice face, especially after getting her teeth fixed (thanks to Idol – sure she’d never been able to afford it on her own). If she’d just get rid of the dreds! I like her style, her voice and her song choices on the show.
I’m sure I’ll forget lots, but some of my fave performances:
Just about all of Kelly’s, but especially “Stuff Like That There”, “Don’t Play That Song”, “It’s Raining Men”, “I Surrender”, “Without You”.
Clay: “Solitaire”, “To Love Somebody”, “Bridge over….”, “Vincent”
Bo: “Time In a Bottle”, “Stand By Me”
Diana: “No More Tears (Enough is Enough)” and “Don’t Cry Outloud”
Blake Lewis: “She Will Be Loved”
David C: “The First Time….”, “Music of the Night”
Michael J: ‘It’s All Wrong..”
Carley: “Total Eclipse…”, “Show Must Go On”
Crystal: “People Get Ready”, “Me and Bobby McGee”
Lauren Alaina: “If I Die Young”
Constantine: “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Hard to Handle” (I don’t even like BR, but he was great on it)
Px2: “Hard To Handle”, “Home”
Certainly not the only performances I really liked, but these are the ones that stand out to me and I actually remember fondly.

The thing about 3 on down the list is I’ve never listened to any of their post Idol stuff, but during the show did enjoy what they did. For Lee, I liked The Boxer, Hallelujah, Simple Man and loved Falling Slowly duet with Crystal. Should he have won? No. But I enjoyed his time on there. Kris I picked over Adam from the start. Just liked his style better. Cook I liked the first time I heard him sing (which wasn’t until the top 24). He was never featured, that I remember, during auditions. Same with Elise this year. I had no idea who she was. Phil is 6 by default because the rest are just not that good. Scotty should have been out between about 6-10. Lauren was so much better. Clay should’ve won his year. McPhee should have won hers. If those three won they’d be 3, 4 and 5 on my list. If Hollie had won she’d be 2 on my list. Crazy how things work out. To each his own.

I think Jordin get forgotten for 2 reasons. 1. She’s the middle child…not the best, not the worst. 2. She was very middle of the road on Idol. Good voice but caught between an interesting beat-boxer(I always have to be reminded of his name, too) and a powerhouse. Jordin again was just the happy medium between the two of them.
Things will very likely change for Jordin however when her movie comes out. Whitney Houston was going to draw a big audience while she was alive…..now, even bigger.

Simon was crazy for Tamyra, however, it was Christina that he batted his eyes at, and said on a number of occasions, “I have a crush on you”. Mercedes: the babies are even more dangerous, because their poison is more concentrated than in adults. A girl I work with’s aunt’s puppy Bulldog was bitten by a copperhead last week, and died before they could get him to the Vet, And there was an AJC story a couple of weeks ago about a man who was clearing his back yard in ATL, and a baby copperhead (or maybe rattlesnake) bit his hand. It swole the size of a baseball mitt, and he spent days in intensive care – the cost $250,000!

Sam-A, I guess you never watched the Indian Jones movies all the way through without closing your eyes?

From the AJC Buzz:
Another reason to stay as far away from Twitter as possible:
Some time ago, according to Twitter lore (is there a more reliable source of information?) her current boo Kanye West may or may not have tweeted a photo that did or did not show Kim K’s bare assets.

D, I like these challenges. I can play, but I can’t add youtube links at work…before I do, here’s my winners’ list:
1. Kelly
2. Carrie
3. Cookie
4. Kris
5. Jordin
6. Phil
7. Scotty
8. Ruben
9. Taylor
10.Lee
11.Fantasia
As for horrible performances, I’m voting for Lisa Tucker attempting Because of You, pretty much anything Sanjaya ever sung, especially Besame Mucho (ugh!), Chris Richardson doing Mayberry, Kristy Lee Cook’s Eight Days a Week (shudder!), the mentioned Rockin’ Robin, and finally, Tim Urban’s whole time on the show, especially Under My Thumb…

Rickster: I put hands over eyes, with thumbs in ears (Spielberg always seemed to pick “hissing” snakes – noise scares me too), and whomever I was with had to tell me when the scenes were over. Worst scene, the pit where Indy and the Karen gal were put in the first movie – wowsa!
It wasn’t too much easier in the Harry Potter movies with Nagini, even though I knew it was computer-generated!

K&CF: I didn’t care at all for Chris Richardson or Tim Urban, and I too would shudder if I ever went crazy and remembered KLCs murder of “Eight Days A Week” – criminal dismemberment of a Beatles song! Definitely a felony.

k&cf…omg I forgot about Urban’s Under My Thumb!!! Reggae-style….one of the funniest awful moments on Idol.
Kristy Lee sang Eight Days a Week just fine…it was the arrangement….country hoe-down… that made me run screaming from the room.

Re snakes…I’m afraid of snakes but I’m more afraid of the frickin vet bills when Maggie gets bitten. That thought and a pair of snake boots gives me the courage to kill the dang things!

And re nude photos getting out…agree with Rickster! Why take them if you don’t want them published. Seriously, if ya ain’t married to the guy…don’t take pictures in the buff!

Then there is Madonna who flashed her gnarly right whatever that was to a crowd in Turkey. She is proof that the adage “there is no such thing as a bad set” is not always true.
People are desperate for attention, some more than others.

In other Idol news, Phil’s family’s pawn shop was broken into with a large piece of earth moving equipment after the perps(did I get that right Woodpappy?) cut the phone and electric leading to the store.
I guess they think Phil is going to be rich now so his family won’t need the money they stole. Jerks!
