Could the original song make a difference this year?

What was turning out to be a relatively unmemorable, rather sleepy night turned around the moment Phillip Phillips starting singing the original song “Home.”

I have to say Phillip has the winds going in his direction based on recent history. He’s a guy with a guitar, period. He’s got the looks, the humble attitude. He has never been in danger to date of going home. I don’t think tonight changed matters any on that front. He performed well, be it Simon Fuller’s pick “Stand By Me,” Billy Joel’s “Movin’ Out” or that “Home Song.” I feel he will …

‘American Idol’ live blogging top 2 performance finale

Welcome to the final performance show of the year where we get to live blog. And it’s only an hour! Three songs for Jessica and Phillip: their favorite of the year, a choice by Simon Fuller and a new original song, that is presumably their respective “coronation” song. We presume they no longer force the finalists to sing the same song.

Star 94 drops Ray Mariner from Cindy & Ray show

Ray Mariner

On Monday, Star 94 dismissed Ray Mariner of the Cindy & Ray morning show.

He has been taken off the Star 94 website. On his personal Facebook page, Mariner has not commented about his departure but has placed his job at Star 94 in the past tense.

Star 94 Program Director Scott Lindy in a text gave the standard, “I cannot comment on personnel matters.” Mariner, in a text, declined to comment as well. Ditto with Mariner’s agent Norm Schrutt on the phone. Radio silence, as they say.

Evening host Tim Orff, who was the ultimate substitute morning guy when he worked at Dave FM, will join Cindy Simmons in the mornings until a replacement is found, I’m told.

Cindy & Ray joined Star 94 in February 2003 as a personality afternoon team, considered an unusual move at the time. They were a hit, giving Star plenty of juice in the afternoon. But with Steve McCoy and Vikki Locke’s audience …

Clark Howard joins new HLN weekday show 5 to 7 p.m. with Ryan Smith, Isha Sesay

clark

When Clark Howard cut back his hours last year on syndicated radio, he wasn’t taking his first steps toward an early retirement.

Rather, he’s expanding his TV presence,  joining an ensemble weekday newscast on HLN starting Monday, June 4, dubbed “Evening Express” from 5 to 7 p.m.

HLN, in a press release, said it will be modeled after its successful “Morning Express With Robin Meade,” providing “an energetic, inspirational and solutions-oriented look at the day’s news, accompanied by deeper discussions and reporting on stories and issues that resonate in the American household, including parenting, education, health, personal finance and relationships.”

This means it will have a more conversational tone than a typical evening newscast.

Ryan Smith, host of programming for InSession on TruTV and part of the “Morning Express” team, will anchor. Smith has a background as a sports and entertainment attorney with a degree from Columbia Law School.

Howard, who has hosted a weekend …

Can Phillip Phillips give Georgia its first ‘Idol’ crown?

AMERICAN IDOL: The final 2: L-R: Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez. CR: Michael Becker / FOX.

AMERICAN IDOL: The final 2: L-R: Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez. CR: Michael Becker / FOX.

Here’s a piece I wrote for the print edition of The Atlanta Journal Constitution:

This has been a mixed bag of a year for “American Idol,” the aging Fox music competition show.

With increased competition from NBC’s “The Voice,” “Idol” lost a quarter of its viewers this year from 2011, the biggest dropoff in the show’s 11-year history. The judges were pilloried for hyperbolic praise and excessive standing ovations for the contestants. Most infamous: Jennifer Lopez declaring Joshua Ledet “one of the best singers of the past 50 years.”

But all was not lost. “Idol” this season managed to find genuine talent who generated passionate debate on the AJC Radio and TV blog.

Tonight, the finals feature Jessica Sanchez, a San Diego teen with exceptionally mature vocal skills, and Phillip Phillips, a Leesburg native who blends a confident, laid-back attitude with an emotive vocal …

Monica Pearson, Jenn Hobby, Cynthia Bailey at Doggies on the Catwalk fundraiser

This year’s Doggies on the Catwalk fundraiser was moved from Grady High School to a high-end furniture store Room & Board in West Midtown this past Friday night.

Local celebrities paraded dogs around for PALS Atlanta, which provides ongoing care and support to pets of Atlanta area persons living with HIV symptomatic/AIDS, and other critical illnesses or disabilities. Models and celebrities wore designer duds from Tootsie’s and Bill Hallman while Highbrow Hound dressed up the dogs. This year, the event raised $6,000, more than doubling last year’s total.

Here are some photos from the event. B98.5’s Vikki Locke hosted. Among the participants: Cynthia Bailey of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” Jenn Hobby of the Bert Show on Q100 and Monica Pearson of WSB-TV.

What do you think of trailer to “Revolution”?

  • I’m willing to watch the pilot based on that.
  • Does not intrigue me at all.

NBC’s most anticipated fall show “Revolution,” shot last month in Atlanta, has already been seen by 7.2 million people on YouTube in less than a week. That’s miles ahead of any of its other new shows, including Ryan Murphy’s “New Normal” (120,000 views), which features NeNe Leakes in a recurring role.

Why? It has a potentially cool sci-fi premise: all electricity disappears and we see what the world is like 15 years later. And it has pedigree in J.J. Abrams, who has “Fringe” and “Person of Interest” on the current TV lineups and is best known for “Lost,” the rare high-concept show that worked. Jon Favreau (who directed “Iron Man” and starred in “Swingers”)) directed the first episode, which was shot around Atlanta. The …

TV best bets with series finale of ‘House,’ season finales of ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ ‘American Idol,’ ‘Modern Family’

house-hugh-laurie-fox1Fox’s “House” gets a lovely send off Monday night, first with a one-hour retrospective, followed by the final episode.

Hugh Laurie and the producers managed to turn an irascible, foul-mouthed, always-in-pain doctor into a star, someone viewers were willing to watch week in and week out. The story structure became formulaic (patient gets sick, gets misdiagnosed, gets sicker, recovers after House figures out what’s really happening.) But fans of Laurie embraced the complex character over 177 episodes.

But alas, it’s time to say goodbye, ol’ grouch.

Otherwise, this week is business as usual. Both “Idol” and “Dancing With the Stars,’ down in ratings, finish up their seasons while Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” returns and ABC tries its hand in a new music show called “Duets,” which includes former “Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson.
