“Idol” winner Phillip Phillips‘ coronation song ‘Home” debuted last week at No. 2 on the Billboard digital songs list with 278,000 in sales.

That’s the best opening week for a winners’ song since Soundscan began tracking downloads in 2003.

But even counting singles sales in CD form, Phillips’ opening week was the third best ever, only behind Ruben Studdard’s “Flying Without Wings” and Clay Aiken’s “This is the Night” from that magical season two.

“Idol Chatter” in USA Today tallied the top 11:

  1. Clay Aiken, This Is the Night (393,000 first-week sales)
  2. Ruben Studdard, Flying Without Wings (286,000)
  3. Phillip Phillips, Home (278,000)
  4. David Cook, Time of My Life (236,000)
  5. Kelly Clarkson, A Moment Like This (236,000)
  6. Taylor Hicks, Do I Make You Proud (228,000)
  7. Scotty McCreery, I Love You This Big (171,000)
  8. Carrie Underwood, Inside Your Heaven (171,000)
  9. Fantasia, I Believe (142,000)
  10. Kris Allen, No Boundaries (134,000)
  11. Lauren Alaina, Like My Mother Does (122,000)

Phillips had nine songs on the digital top 200 compared to 11 for Kris Allen season eight and 17 for David Cook season seven.

- Nigel Lythgoe is my idol. He is honest and logical in his assessment of “Idol,” its competition and how things went this past year, courtesy of Michael Slezak of TV Line.

A sampling:

TVLINE | Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly recently told reporters that Idol‘s Season 11 ratings dipped “more than anticipated” and that in retrospect the show should’ve made more creative tweaks to stay competitive in the crowded reality singing competition space. How did you feel about those remarks, especially considering that in many ways, Season 11 felt like a genuine creative success?

Lythgoe: I’m shocked that he would say we didn’t anticipate that. We always stayed away from [airing] two seasons of American Idol [per calendar year], knowing that ratings would dip, and the public would get tired. It’s just the very nature of offering the audience too much [of a particular thing]. Now, if you’re going to do The X Factor on the same [network] as American Idol, that’s like two American Idols back-to-back. So, yes, I’m shocked that they thought that the ratings wouldn’t dip. Plus, The Voice is in the mix now, too. There’s just a lot more on offer today, and kids don’t always watch the television anymore. The world has changed in the 11 years that we’ve been doing this.

He said this was a rare year where he couldn’t tell who would be the winner. He said the vote leaders would change each week. He is open to looking at voting changes given that a somewhat similar type singer has won the past five years (the white guy with guitar factor). He even jokes about the Filipinos supposedly voting for Jessica.

He felt Ruben Studdard, post “Idol,” was pigeon holed into R&B and not given a chance to cross over. (I agree.) He noted the big production values on “X Factor” and wanted to jazz up “Idol” a bit but not at the expense of the contestants. (I think he more or less succeeded on that front.)

And the killer quote of the interview: “The television producers, of which I include myself, don’t give a damn who wins this show. The only thing we’re interested in is turning out a fabulous show for people to watch. We get no money from the record companies or anything else.”

- There was a point when I thought “Good Girl” by Carrie Underwood was stalling but alas, country radio is pushing her into the top two again. She’s now battling “No Hurry” by Georgia’s Zac Brown Band (another act that has never had a song below the top two) for the top spot, as Georgia Kip Moore’s first no. 1 “Somethin’ About a Truck” is starting to lose steam. This would be Underwood’s 14th consecutive top 2 single on the country chart.

- The final ratings for “Idol’ was 21.5 million viewers, the lowest ever. Honestly, given “Duets” and “AGT” now, “The Voice” and “X Factor” in the fall and then “The Voice” again in the spring, music show burnout is inevitable. “Idol” can only see things going down, I fathom. It’s sad, but true.

K&CF, I need some of your zen. Apparently I am the old you! ;-) I guess I just haven’t accepted that Idol will never find another Carrie…

Maybe part of it is that my favorite **almost always** makes it to the final 2. Matter of fact, every season since Carrie except for Jordin’s and David Cook’s, my fave has been the runner-up. (Though last season I had several faves… Lauren was by far my #1 after auditions, but once she started going all fast-country, Pia and Haley overtook her. But anyway.)

It’s almost like that soap opera actress who was nominated for an award every single year, over and over, but could never ever win. It stings more with every loss…

And G, I know. I feel cheated too. All the time I was catching up on comments, I kept nodding my head at yours.

The only difference is, I don’t know if I can lower my expectations. I know I’d enjoy it more if I did… but how do you do that?

@Jenny. I guess it’s like watching the Superbowl [yet another year] and your team didn’t make it. The Superbowl is an event regarless of who plays. However, it makes it that more speial if YOUR team makes it.

Seth T nailed it. Idol isn’t as random as people might think. The show is most definitely set to a cast and as long as the show is structured that way, we’ll probably get the same results.

G, I’m sorry you feel cheated…and I get that. I honestly can say that I haven’t REALLY voted for someone in a while. I mean, I might have thrown “a cup of water or two into the ocean” because it made me feel better, but I didn’t do it expecting any major results.

Jenny, lol. Well, you sound more like the younger me! But I understand. I wanted Lauren to win over Scotty, and I was also fond of Pia. So, really, you’re the Susan Lucci of our blog?

G, you mentioned the Super Bowl…and that’s about right. For me, though, I’m more of a Braves fan…and we know their track record. I guess I’m used to the close but no cigar! :?

K&CF, lol, I guess I am! Or my favorite contestants are, anyway. And good Super Bowl analogy, G.

Hey, that’s true… it’s like alllllll those seasons that the Braves went to the World Series only to lose. I guess the one win was the Carrie season. ;-)

And K&CF, I’m with you on the voting. That’s exactly how I am. The last time I really voted for someone was Adam. Though I did throw some “cups of water into the ocean” for Hollie and Jessica this year. Not that I thought it’d make any difference… but at least I felt like I supported them.

JTesla I tried also to read the Lord of the Rings book myself but it made me sick for home so I figure I will wait for the motion picture to come out which they should do soon if not later if they want to use that Mickey Rooney who is not as young as he used to be a few years ago or forty even to play the part before he gets too old or is dead or both like that Richard Dawson from the kissing television game program or maybe McHales Navy I forget which.

Morning!

Mo! LOL!

I’ll go looking for Idol news although I don’t think there’s much out there. Again, I find it strange that there’s no update on Phil’s surgery.

Did anyone watch AGT last night(or as I like to call it, America May Have Talent But It Sure Isn’t On This Show) Hubby and I were watching the dvr’d Hatfields and McCoys last night.

Hmmmm! Just when I think there’s no update on Phil’s surgery, I find an update on Phil’s surgery:

A source close to Phillips originally told E! News that he was scheduled to do Idol press in New York and then fly home to Georgia for surgery right after the American Idol finale, and then it was rumored that the procedure had been scheduled.

But he didn’t make it to New York, instead participating in the process remotely. Surgery remains an option, sources tell us, but alternative treatment has proved effective and doctors have given him the OK to commence rocking out next month.

Phillips “is being treated and doing well,” says an insider. Meanwhile, the young man and his family are keeping further details about the nature of his treatment and any future treatment he may require private.

But apparently he’s doing well enough to slog out a 45-date tour!

“He will still be attending all the tour dates and is really looking forward to the launch on July 6,” the tour rep says. And after this year’s Idol top 10 have crisscrossed the country, they’ll play their final show Sept. 11 in Milwaukee.

I’m a Braves, Hawks, Falcons, and Bulldawg fan. You would figure I would be used to dissappointments by now. LOL!

A set cast does make sense. It’s kind of like the purpose of the show is to pick the top 10-12 contestants to form the seaon and tour. The season promotes the tour, because it markets itself to millions of viewers every week.

The judges are pretty much done after the top 10 is set. The “save” is just salt in the food. Some folks like “salt” and others don’t.

Having folks to go through the exercise of voting for a winner only sets up the headliner for the tour.

All My Loving is one of my favorites as well. The Beatles were like two different bands sometimes. The simplicity of their early work and then the more complicated hippie-style raising consciousness of their later stuff. Loved both!

G The judges are pretty much done after the top 10 is set.

Exactly! That’s why anything they have to say about any of the contestants is inconsequential and should be taken that way.

I, too, loved both sides – just showed the unbridled and amazing talent of these 4 geniuses. My two favorite albums are “With (Meet) The Beatles” and “Abbey Road” – at two complete opposites of their huge spectrum. Not that I don’t almost equally love all the others. The only, singular Paul song I truly do not like: “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road”, which of course was a fave of most of my male friends at the time of the White Album.

I used to date the lead singer in a Rock/Soul band, and he’d walk aroung the house singing it just to irritate me – of course I’d answer back with “Run for Your Life”.

All you “losers” hating on Phillip need to put up or shut up; his fans have. In fact, not only did “Home” sell well on iTunes, he had multiple songs in their Top 40 in sales, and 11 in their Top 200. How about Jessica and Joshua? Between them they had ONE song at number 157, and that was Joshua. He sold so many more songs than the entire rest of the contestants COMBINED it isn’t even funny.

Like I said, if you like these other singers so much, then buy their songs, just like Phillip’s fans did. Otherwise, you’re nothing more than a bunch of blowhard racists.
