The producers of Atlanta-based “Single Ladies” were clearly caught off guard when their biggest star Stacey Dash quit after just one season. It was VH1’s first big scripted show and it had done well, averaging about 2 million viewers a week, resulting in a quick renewal.
Dash’s character Val had a major cliffhanger of a plotline involving her current squeeze, who caught her sleeping with her ex.
Dash had no plans to come back to tie up loose ends on that story.
So the second season starts a couple of weeks later. Humiliated by the mess she created, Val had left the country and the girls find out she is not coming back in the first episode I screened. The creator Stacy Littlejohn recognized that this could all be a bit of a stretch. She hopes the viewers will give the new girl Raquel, played by “All My Children” soap star Denise Vasi, a chance.
“You can’t let a monkey wrench stop the show,” said Littlejohn in an interview on set in March. She said after the news broke last September, she spent a day mourning the situation. “I then went into fix it/recovery mode. I had to create a new character. It was challenging. We had to really use our creative muscles.”
She ditched the “season one was just a dream” option. (Think “Dallas”!) “Nobody gets zapped by a UFO,” she added. “I had to create a rationale for her to leave. Sometimes you need to escape and not face things.” She also couldn’t fast-forward, say, a year. She had other storylines with LisaRaye McCoy and Charity Shea to deal with.
Raquel, the new girl, had to be different from Val. “Val was a hopeless romantic,” Littlejohn said. “I want to keep the romantic in there. Raquel isn’t as naive as Val. Raquel is more grounded. She believes in love. She’s been hurt. She gets it.”
She gave Raquel a history with Keisha, LisaRaye’s character. They grew up together but Raquel had been traveling a lot for work. Raquel came from a lot of money but doesn’t want to be defined by that. In fact, she’s not snooty at all but “super-relatable.” After quitting her high-powered job, she buys Val’s boutique. “We can’t get rid of the set!” Littlejohn said.”Some shows have a coffee shop or a restaurant. We have a beautiful boutique.”
Raquel is introduced in the first few minutes of the first episode at her engagement party. Things don’t go quite as planned.
Littlejohn acknowledges the pressures of replacing a character as big as Val. “It’s way more stress,” she said. “Val’s already an established character. There’s a little doubt as to whether the new one will work. There’s a lot riding on it. We’ve had a lot of rewrites.”
Vasi herself is not expressing fear. “What I fell in love with is how relatable the show is to my own life and my own girlfriends,” she said. “Women are going to relate to Raquel’s decision. That’s really what’s going to sell her. She is going through this moment of transition. She’s finding herself.”
Like the first season, there will be a fair share of Atlanta cameo appearances by the likes of Big Boi (in the first episode), T.I. (who doesn’t play himself) and Chilli of TLC (who does.) Queen Latifah, who produces the show, will appear in it as well. Rick Fox is back. “Project Runway” star Anthony Williams (the fashion designer for the show) will appear as well in an episode.
None of the other actors would talk specifically about Dash, who was rumored to be a difficult on set season one.
“We had a lot of problems,” said Shea, who plays April. “Regardless, I plead the fifth.”
She did add later, “She had some issues unrelated to the show spill over.” [Dash in a statement said she missed her family while shooting in Atlanta last year.]
You can read between the lines of Shea’s next thoughts:
“It’s a lot easier [this season.] Denise and I get along really really well. She just makes every day so much easier.”
Shea expected some backlash after Dash left. “People will get over it,” she said, “or stop watching. At the end of the day, we can only do the best we can do.”
Her character divorced after an affair with the mayor. She dropped A&R work for another career. So her life is a little more “Sex and the City.” More men, cooler dresses and the like.
McCoy said she remains friends with Dash. She figured any rumored rift between the two of them simply added publicity about the show. “Stacy came with her fan base. I came with mine. Collectively, we’re brands. We knew that. Now with her gone, it makes me the only brand. No way do I look at this as a one-person situation. It’s a three-piece ensemble. It’s about us, three friends and our dating lives.”
She echoed Shea by saying “the camaraderie on the set is calm.” [McCoy's reality show on TV One is on hold. "Single Ladies" is taking up too much time. And she is still in the midst of a divorce Michael Misick, a former Premier of the Turks and Caicos Island. "I didn't go into the marriage right. I wasn't in love for better worse. It went from fairy tale to nightmare."]
Her character at the end of season one is reeling when she finds out her boyfriend Malcolm, who she truly loves, is on the run from the FBI and is with his ex wife. “It brings back all my insecurities about him,” she said. Keisha also has an ex boyfriend pop up this season to add levels of complication.
“I absolutely love the Malcolm/Keisha dynamic,” said D.B. Woodside, who plays Malcolm. “The two are perfect for each other but they both have trust issues. They love hard. They fight hard.” He compares it to Mr. Big and Carrie from “Sex and the City.”
Indeed, for better or worse, the ghost of “Sex and the City” hovers over “Single Ladies.” But that’s not the worst specter to have around, eh?

I watched this sorry excuse for a show tonight just because it is a black show! They ALL need acting coaches. Next they need to take ALL the writers on this show and fire them! My husband and I watched this show last summer and could not wait to enjoy it this summer. It is unfortunate that the creators of this show think so low of their veiwers that they would put another pretty girl w/ green eyes and no acting skills to replace Stacey Dash. I would rather see someone less attractive, a good story line and more black women.

Is it because Queen Latifah is the producer that people watch? I tried HARD to make it through 15 minutes, the acting is HORRIBLE. Story line good but ugghh it was PAINFUL to watch the tango and talk, catching the fiance NEXT CHANNEL…Snoozer. 1st and LAST time stopping at that show.

That was a horrible first showing, of a revamped cast with under achieving acting abilities. …and I have yet to begin flexing my beer muscles on this subject. No offense to Ms. Vasi but, uh no! That will do. At least Dash had the ability to elevate the other girls, D- List acting skills to a, solid watchable C level show. I got ten minutes into the new season and just stopped, I could go no further! Sadly!

i watched this show last night and was very disappointed. the previous comments about how the new girl, denise vasi, couldn’t act i thought at the time was harsh but unfortunately after last night’s episode of season 2, it was true. all this show did was find another stacey dash look alike to put in this role and that was it. the acting as a whole was horrible from everyone involved and the script was terrible. i kept watching because i really wanted to see how keisha and malcom was going to play out. if this episode of any indicator of how the new season will be then this show won’t be on long after this. it was just a bunch of people parading on the screen with no acting skills just looking pretty.

I watched the show last night and Oh my goodness! The new girl Denise Vasi is just the worst actress ever. It was like watching a train wreck no joke. Home girl needs some serious acting lessons. How do u replace a talented Stacy Dash with this no name no talent actress?!! I haven’t seen suck bad acting since Mariah Carey’s movie “Glitter” & even Mariah did a better job than Denise. Bring back Stacyyyyyyyy please.

you can tell how many people actually read the article. I don’t care this, I don’t care that, Stacy Dash I love her to death, but the girl was getting full of herself and making work on the set difficult. You’re always replaceable when that happens. Aside from that, are people going to really act like they were hanging on her every word on this show, you tuned in for the eye candy mostly, and the new girl is freaking hot. In a I might go gay for her type of hot way. That’s like the hottest black girl on tv. She’s ok in acting, but this is if you actually pay attention to that.

I never thought Stacey was all that good an actress in the first place. She delivered lines in a rather stilted and wooden manner, like she was reading them off cue cards. I noticed it in the first episode last season, and it just never improved. I made an allowance for the show being brand new and all, but Stacey never changed, always a “mechanical” delivery technique, or maybe that was just her acting style? Sure she LOOKED good to my eye, and I liked THAT for sure. But still, her delivery wasn’t all that good, at least not as good as the others in the show… I’ll miss SEEING Stacey, but her loss is not a deal breaker for me with the show. I never thought she WAS the show as many others seem to think, though being one of the featured players… Besides, I always give a show three chances to make my day before I drop it. And this, without Stacey, is like a new show, so I’ll reserve judgement for a while yet…

Stacy Dash was the show. How can you not clean up the story line with her and Jerry!!! I am in love with him. The new girl was nice last night but she’s not Val and nor is her acting or character believable. I will watch two more episodes and if I am not intrigued I will stop the DVR from recording and find something else to watch on Monday nights.

People fail to remember that Lisa Raye’s character is not educated. She is a retired video chick, who is now getting by on her hustle. I do not agree with Stacey Dash’s replacement. I thought that we would get a little more color added to the cast. However, I will support the show; it is positive, nonviolent, and takes place in a glamorous environment. Cudos to Lisa Rayes performance last night: catching the ring was hilarious.

Hopefully the rest of the season will get better, unfortunately it was kind of weak overall. It’s hard enough for AA actresses to get roles, however there is a reason why Dash doesn’t get many.
She is a “D” list talent at best(though she is fine). Also this is in no way a drama so the “actors” can only project so much. Does not require “chops”

I watched the show last night and had no idea that Dash had been replaced. So to me I did not miss her. I watch the show for the cute dresses for women in there 40’s like myself. I am a woman of color and have never hated on any other woman, but Stacy Dash does not act very well, she has beauty and great clothing style, and Lisa Raye has a nice style also even though sometimes she comes off a bit unlady like. I will continue to watch the show and a word for the producers, please cut back on the Atlanta actors/rappers/singers just popping in and out, that’s not cute and far from classy. Lets have the continued love drama, fashion and some fun. The story line tends to be where I can see where it is going, not enough suspense. I wish the show success, I will watch regardless, but it needs some fine tuning. Maybe a regular person could give the show executives some advice.

It’s funny how VHI has decided to get rid of Stacey Dash and then they try to get a new girl who tries to look like Stacey Dash. How stupid is that. Trust me she has nothing on Stacey Dash so they should of worked something out with her instead of getting rid of her. The new replacement is a joke. I spoke to 6 of my friends and we were all laughing about how stupid the new episode was and we are no longer watching it either. They should of named Single Ladies The New Fantasy Island. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@guest: It’s unclear if VH1 pushed out Stacey Dash as you say. I don’t think so. If that were the case, they would not have left a cliffhanger with her character at the end of season one. All evidence points to Stacey being unhappy and leaving on her own accord.

I finally watched episode 1 of season 2. It was not that bad. I miss Stacy Dash, but the show must go on. I am hoping that Raquel grows on me. I hope that she loses this little gorl voice. Lisa Raye is a strong woman. I am happy to see her have a chance in a role like this. I hope that she seizes this oppty and becomes the brand that I know she is capable of becoming. A positive role model for women that are not size 0, but a healthy weight for their bone structure. That being said, I wish that the stylists would dress her character in better clothing that suited her bdy type. The yellow dress that she was wearing when she did the tango with rick fox was horrible for ber body. What on earth wast the stylist thinking?? I like the fact that April seems stronger this season. She brings something special to the show. Not just her race, but she has a humorous side that I hope comes out more this season. She reminds me of Katherine Hegl with her acting. I sense that she is capable of handling a rich story line, instead of the sappy one liners that they keep thrusting on us.
I really enjoy Single Ladies, but can’t help but think that it should be a 30 min show instead of 1hr. The story and the dialogue for the characters are just one dimensional. They try to cover too much. I really believe this show would fare much better in 30 min. I look at Sex and the City after all these years and see how strong the writing really was. When it airs today, they have commercials and it still works. If they made single ladies 30 min, hired better writers that really understand how to master dialogue within a short window, they would have a hit.
The costume designer, the set designer, the camera crew, the lighting crew all deserve a big round of applause for their outstanding part in this show. The primary cast members can really shine if they are given the opportunity with the right material. They are so CLOSE to having something special, but it falls flat because of a key missing ingredient. I HOPE they find out how to fix this before it is too late. I HOPE that Queen Latifah has someone that is working on how to make this show better, because it has all of the key ingredients to be a Hit like a modern day LIVING SINGLE or even Designing Women – I think that both were based in Atlanta – Atlanta is such an exciting city. Yes – It can hold its own next to NYC
Just my opinion…
Unfortunately, I know that only ratings and advertising can keep a show on tv. Let’s hope that someone in power will make the necessary changes to fix this show or it will be be history after this season. I can’t help but wonder, how did shows like Girlfriends, Living Single make it for so many years without large casts or budgets. Single Ladies can become a modern day hit that stays around for years, if they just get their act together. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

I loved Single Ladies last season and I could relate to Val. Now that she is gone, it does make me sad but Raquel is pretty. I just wasn’t really feeling the chemistry or was it just me? I mean I love the story lines but I liked Val in it. I’ll still have it set up to record on my Hopper as I am sure every other woman will be doing the same. Good thing because I work on Mondays at Dish and my kids don’t like watching what I like. So my Hopper can record 3 shows at once without drama which is a plus. Hopefully the acting improves.

Denise Vasi is beautiful and will make a great replacement for Dash. There are no harder working and more dedicated actors than those who come from soap operas they work 5 days a week, sixteen hours a day all year long and have to be prepared everyday which is alot more work than shooting a once a week show. Lay off Denise and give her a chance her acting is better than some other single ladies… and anyway what we single ladies watching want is more man candy like Malcolm…hot hot hot….

EVERYONE on this planet knows that the ONLY and I repeat the ONLY reason why Denise Vasi has made it this far is A) Her colored eyes AND B) She sleeps with high powered men to get ahead in this industry! Noah Tepperberg, Sevan Arslanian, Russel Simmons, Anthony Handler….List goes on. Point BLANK! It’s not shocking to believe it because well, we saw her on screen TRYING to act and she is a ABSOLUTE torture to watch! Stacy is a talented amazing lady and u honey will never measure up. Your acting shouldn’t be aloud in a kindergarten play.
Denise is one of the soap actors with no talent . Block of wood is more like it. I always fast forwarded through all her scenes because she is a tremendously a TERRIBLE actress. For real. Terrible monotone, flat, boring. Just terrible. Denise is a girl who can’t act to save her life. A truly terrible actress even for daytime TV’s standards. She has as much personality as a puppet, which by the way can convey more emotions than she is able to. She is the master of the blank stare and the babydoll voice. The girl has zero talent! ZEROOOOOOOOOOOO Stacy is a Ferrari & Denise is a Toyota! She kind of reminds me of Soft Porn, cute to look at but NO TALENT!

Oh Goodness I watched the premiere & seriously it was a joke without Dash. That new “replacement” Denise?! is just lost. She looks so pathetic “Trying” so hard to “act” I kind of feel sorry for her. It’s really like watching a train wreck. I guess Queen cares more about a “Stacy Dash wannabe look-alike” than a real talented actress. So sad what this world has come too. Stacy Dash was stunning as well as talented. I first got hooked when I watched her on Clueless. Denise V is desperately trying to be her. It really seriously is sad to watch.

I LOVED Val’s character, but i do understand that the show still much go on without her and so far, the show hasn’t let me down!! I just wish there was a way that the Val’s story could continue. I loved her storyline, she was so dramactic but I loved it. Denise Vasi (Raquel) is beautiful and so far her story is pretty interesting so even with the change, the show will still have my view. Just don’t make us wait another long year without the show, it’s my favorite show !!! <3

U get that the show must go on without Dash but they should’ve just continued with the two ladies instead of bringing that horrible pathetic so called actress Denise. They should have casted a realllll talented actress and not a robot. Denise is boring, her tone is annoying, she is so desperately trying to act, she has no emotions than can help a character come alive…. She just stinksssssss big time. I saw the pictures on google with her and those old men Noah Tepoerberg and damnnnn I believe she sleeps around to land jobs cause she seriously has nothing to offer besides nice eyes.

Yes, I, too, was surprised Stacey Dash would not return to season 2. But, she could not act. I am glad she’s gone. Hopefully, to acting school.
She often sounded like a spolied whining child. her manerisiums always seemed overly exasgerated or inappropriate at times. Perhaps, what is required is a more experinced director.
Anyone with a different story line the new actress can blend in jus t fine with the rest of the ensamble.
Stacey’s acting was unrealistic. glad she wont be there to pout on screen anymore
BTW, Can we get Charity Shea a better wig that doesn’t look so thick on the top of her scalp?

I would like to start by commenting on a couple of comments.
1st of all, Denise Vasi is a young actor who will get better with time & age. Stacy Dash’s 1st movie was Moving w/Richard Pryor. She was horrible in that movie, but by the time Clueless w/Alicia Silverstone came out she was a much better actress.
Also [Veronica] what show were you watching bc you got it all wrong. Val & Keisha were just friends. The only people who met @ college were Val & April’s husband. They were friends from NYU who happened to move to ATL. That is how she met April. She met Keisha bc she designed/styled videos. Keisha was a video girl/thief/poker player. And neither Val or Keisha were 25. They were well into their 30’s. April was the only 25yr old. She just happened to meet her husband [Val's friend] @ the age of 17,and had been with him ever sense. That is until she cut the Mayor, and ended up in that scandel with all the rest of the white girls he slept with.
Thank God they replaced Val with an actor. They could have replaced her with a reality show wannabe actor, and then we’d be watching a Kardashian fill her shoes. At least we got another black woman. A real black woman, I might add, not some black by default, meaning a woman who thinks she’s black because she sleeps with black athletes. I do agree with some of you about Lisa Raye’s acting. I mean she was really good in The Player’s Club, now it just seems like she’s overacting. She is the complete opposite of what I said earlier about your acting should get better with age, seems like her’s is getting worse. It’s like she needs to get one of those big yellow&black books, Acting for Dummies.
They could have simply replaced Val’s character w/Denise. They look a lot alike. I mean if we can have 2 Lionel Jefferson’s why not have 2 Val’s. The Jefferson’s was a hit show for like 9 seasons. And no one ever complained when the 1st Lionel was replaced with the 2nd Lionel who was then replaced with the 1st Lionel, and they looked nothing alike. Stacy & Denise look like they could be sisters in real life. Hell mother & daughter even, Stacy is 44yrs old. Denise looks enough like her to have pulled it off. Or she could have been her little sister who just finished school, and came back to take care of her boutique. Anything other than the way they introduced her to the show.
I will continue to watch bc I support all black television as we all should. And I am proud when they do well and are SUCCESSFUL.

I really was a big fan of Stacy Dash. I always thought she was a great, funny witty actress. I agree that the show must continue on with a new character and I’m fine with it. I just feel like Latifah could have found a MUCH better actress than Denise Vasi. There are plenty of young Black actresses that are ACTUALLY talented. I guess they were more concerned about “a look alike” instead of investing in a less attractive actress that could actually act. Denise is horrible. I don’t believe in all this “acting coaches” thanG. You are either born with the “talent” or your not. Denise is and always will be a terrible BORING block of ice on screen. She was on AMC soap opera for 3 years and she was absolutely dreadful to watch. I truly believe that she was only casted on that soap opera because they need a “dark skin” girl so that they won’t look racist. I also don’t think Denise has a special look. Don’t get me wrong she’s a cute girl BUT I’ve seen her look on Stacey, Vanessa as well as Tyra…She is also not a real black woman, she is Greek & Puerto Rican I believe. We all know if she didn’t have light eyes then she wouldn’t have made it this far. I really absolutely tried my hardest to watch the full episode but damn that girl was killing me. It was extremely painful to watch her try so hard. At this point, Amber Rose as well as Kim Kardashian have more talent than her. Her voice sounds like Elmo. Ughhh Stacey was fantastic too bad. LisaRaye is funny so hopefully she will wizen up for the sake of the show, and get rid of the new girl or at least get someone TALENTED to play her role like maybe Nene Leaks or hell a puppet might do a better job lol

Ok, Wow, hasn’t everyone been busy?! It’s been so long since I’ve heard anything about the show, I thought it might’ve been canceled, so glad it’s back ! Where’s Val? Oh Ms Stacey like her name “DASH”ed home, she’s missed, but I’m over it. Caught only the beginning DVR’d it, cool like the new characters what happened to Christina Carter? Deported? Import that young sassy Brit- sexy-comic relief back, at least for her work ethic in fashion. I’ll keep watching love the show, then I’m Aquarius, love smart women! Nice Tango! BTW, Shea’s smile/ Charm inspires books! Real “McCoy” in personality and nice budunkadunk in that Dress, ouch I popped an eye ball! JK, You all are fantastic, plz don’t stop.

They made the new character buy the boutique but how is that going to work exactly? The whole reason having that shop worked was because “Val” was a fashion designer. I don’t really see how the show can justify keeping the shop in the story-line when the only two characters that did design clothes in that whole group did not come back this season. To me it makes the whole point of the shop irrelevant. We shall see if I continue to watch this season.

Saw the first episode of season 2. Loved the opening scene with Raquel and April and Keisha dancing with Jerry and putting in good words for Val. I dont like how they wrote out Vals character though, it seemed weak. “She’s leaving Atlanta..forever.” its like forreal now lol They couldve at least said you know Val got an opportunity to start her own clothing line in Milan and since Jerry and her are no longer together she decided to take it something like that. But the Raquel character is growing on me. Soooo glad Christina is gone! UGH! She was annoying 101! I still dont trust Malcolm! Cant wait to see how this plays out lol

Lord have mercyyyy on the new girl Denise Vasi, LAWDDDD that girl couldnt play a tree in a chool play. I was in pain trying to watch that child tryyyyyy to act. I agree her voice sounds like Minnie Mouse & she doesn’t have any screen presence.Stacy Dash was a wonderful actress who lit up the screen when she did her THANG. This girl is tremendously bad. I cant watch this show anymore. I guess it’s season 1 repeats for me.
