Phillip Phillips post-win interview, photos from the finale

Phillip Phillips is his own man. That is what’s admirable about him and could also give his future record label and managers down the road headaches.
Already, he created a minor ruckus, saying his original coronation song “Home” is not at all the type of song he plans to sing down the road, almost disavowing it, despite the fact he got great feedback from the audience. In fact, it could end up being a radio hit.
I asked him during today’s phone press conference how that song even came in front of him.
“They just threw that song out there,” he told me. “They felt it was the right fit for me. I wanted to do one of my own songs I’ve written. But we had such a short time and couldn’t really do that recording wise. It’s a good song but it’s not something I’d write. I’m glad people like it.”
He later added that he would never have those big choral oohs and aahs in a song of his. “It’s a little too pop for me,” he said. “I’m a little more rock than that.” He prefers a blend of rock, jazz and acoustic stuff. “I’m kind of excited to get it out there,” he said.
Phillips said he doesn’t have any deep desire to be a big pop star. (I’m sure Jimmy Iovine was thrilled to hear that.)

His girlfriend: “She’ll be able to come on tour with me. She supported me throughout all this. I love her to death.”
On ladies liking him: “I’m all about the music, man. I’m not about trying to be some cute guy trying to be successful. I want the music to come first. I want them to feel it and have fun like I do with it.”
On his emotions after he won, causing him to break down and cry instead of sing: “I didn’t even really want to sing or anything. I was so shocked. I just started thinking about the whole top 12. I just started thinking of this whole journey. It’s so crazy. It was a tough road for all of us. It just kind of got to me a little.” Later, he added, “I honestly didn’t think I was going to win. I was caught so off guard. I was in such awe.”
Worst performance: “Time of the Season.” He wished he could have heard more sound in his inner ear. “That was a pretty bad performance. You can’t go back and change it. You can’t be mad about it. It’s all over with now.”
A reporter tried to get him to talk in more detail about his pain and the kidney issue. He wasn’t elaborative, just said he had to get it fixed up “pretty soon.” He had no date yet though TMZ later said it would be next week in Los Angeles. He did admit he almost left the show at least twice due to the kidney pain. He said a doctor helped him manage it until the show was over.
On winning: “I didn’t have any thoughts. I was very shocked. Overwhelmed. I didn’t know how to process it all. I didn’t know what I was thinking the rest of the night honestly.”
On singing with John Fogerty: “It was so awesome. He’s such a nice guy. It’s a pleasure being on stage with him. He wished me the best. Hopefully, we’ll be able to get to sing together again.”
On leaving Leesburg: “I think I”m going to be moving. I got a lot of things I have to do in a lot of places.” He didn’t say where he’d end up.I’m not sure he even knows yet.
On missing part of the tour due to surgery: “I don’t believe I’m missing anything. I’ll be 100% by then. I’m excited.”
On sticking to his guns: “It’s good to just not let people try to change you. It gets tough when a lot of people are coming your way trying to tell you what you should do or not do. I know myself better than anyone. I know what’s best for me… If I didn’t feel comfortable doing something, I wasn’t going to do it.”
Who he’d love to collaborate with: Damien Rice. Rob Thomas. Eric Clapton.
He didn’t feel he was similar to the past four winners, said the way he plays the guitar makes him different and the fact he’s not a great singer and they were all probably better. (Not Lee DeWyze!)
On his modest assessment of his voice: “I’m not outstanding. I can’t hit all those high notes. I do sometimes try to hit some kind of notes. I try to do something with it.”
On music that helped him while he was in pain: Eminem (loves the lyrics). Clapton. John Butler.

JT, never say Rodney doesn’t care!
It will be very interesting to see how Phil and the Idol machine get along. So far, his heels are dug in and they can’t move him. Time will tell whether they stick together or not.
And as much as I love Phil, I think Idol has finally reached a point where they have to do something about the voting. I’m not sure that the outcome would be any different but, at least, Idol viewers could believe in it. They don’t believe in it now.

But let’s also talk about the ramifications of changing the voting system. It isn’t the way it is JUST so Idol can talk about huge numbers. There is also, obviously, a large faction of the audience that loves the whole power voting ability. Would they lose the multi-texters as viewers as well as voters?
I think they are now caught between a rock and a hard place. Whatever they choose to do about the voting will cause another big loss of viewers.

Agreed. I do believe there’s enough technology out there to limit the votes whether the are text, phone, or online.
FWIW, I like the fact the Phil stuck to his guns. In fact, I believe a lot of the suggestions given Joshua and Jessica could have actually hurt them. I really thought Jessica’s 3 performances on Tuesday could have been better. The song choices afforded her by the judges and producers did her no favors.

Harriett. I’m not sure they are considering changing it. I think that it’s time for a major change but, at this point in the show’s long history, any changes will mess with viewership.
New judges will give the ratings another bounce, which will be good.
And of course the technology is available to limit the voting. They already limit voting on DWTS and SYTYCD. Nigel understands how it works so I’m not sure why he appears to be against it on Idol.

I am a fan of Phillip, but I think Rodney is right and he is going to be a headache to a record label. Phillip can be his own person, but he does need to listen to those who know the industry also. I thought Phillip got better the last few weeks, especially the second to last and the finale. In my mind (and I may just be missing it), he sang more melodies (like had been mentioned to him) and that endeared him to the audience. He was still able to make those songs his (to some extent), but they weren’t ALL his way.
He won, I am excited. Jessica will do very well (if not better if she listens to the advice she is given). I feel like we haven’t heard the last of Skylar or Colton and it is a toss up on Hollie for me. I actually liked Hollie better than Jessica. I await next season, and hope it is without JLo….she grated on my nerves this season.

Most of the comments are about the voting. I don’t know if I have an opinion about that. I am one of those who don’t vote much. I voted this season for Phillip the last few weeks, and some for Colton and Skylar earlier. I don’t think they will lose viewers by limiting voting, but it may make things less exciting. I mean…..what WILL Ryan say at the beginning of the finale……after the limited voting just isn’t as exciting….:)

Please, everyone – use the Idol link to express your dismay with the judges. You can write everything you feel about the show, the judges, etc. I felt so much better being able to have my say about the dismal judges table. If enough people tell them how they feel, maybe there will be some changes.
Barbara, hope you find your way here. You’ll find that a number of us regulars have had a diverse number of issues over the past few years, incl health issues ourselves, preemie baby fighting for survival, loss of parents and their dementia journeys, etc., loss of beloved pets – you name it we’ve had and discussed them all. So there’s a great deal of both sympathy and empathy in this home-away-from-home. Never hesitate to discuss your feelings and problems.
I was a bit disappointed with “Duets” – agree with Deirdre, I was a little bored. And Kelly’s duet with the gal on “Stronger” was fantastic – why it was rated next to bottom I cannot understand at all. I was pleasantly surprised that Jen Nettles can actually sing with a fairly normal voice – usually is so high-pitched and nasal! Not sure I’ll hang around – maybe just record and watch the Kelly stuff.
They didn’t really clarify what goes on in the show – do we ever vote? Strange vibe.
Hope Phillipx2 gets his operation sooner than later. What a joyous/sad time for this young man. Sad his biggest adventure of a lifetime was filled with paid.

I thought Duets was just a glorified The Voice. The talent was not so warmed-over as it is on The Voice–in fact it was very good. But, I think, while enjoyable to watch the performances, this is another show that is going to be about the judges competing and not focused on the contestants. Kelly even referenced herself as being extremely competitive.

First of all, I feel dirty about posting this AM in a blog dedicated to pp. He’s not as bad as Lee DeWyze, but he belongs in the same bucket. I could care less how his career unfolds. He can sell nickel or platinum. No skin off my back.
Changes or no changes, AI is going to have disenchantment. The power of AI is the wide open voting system. Introducing the “save” shook the base, but it remained in tact. I say make whatever changes, because AI can afford to. The die-hards won’t leave, and the changes may entice skeptics to stay.
I would hold the judges feet to the fire and make them give scores. Weight the scores and voting, then you really balance off the “crazed voting”.
I don’t know what you do about the WGWG thing, if anything. Apparently, that type of winner is the face of the show (as of recent winners) and it doesn’t appear to change any time soon. Either you no longer allow instrumentalist; end the show with a female and male champion; or change the voting system.

Thanks for the inside scoop on how Phillip thinks and probably will react in the future. Hope he does well but there will indeed be some head bumping in his future. During the season you could tell when he really wasn’t feeling well at all. I’ve had kidney stones before and it’s hard to think about anything else but getting relief much less performing. Looking forward to a nice off season here with the family.

I think Phil’s kidney problems may be more than stones. He said in the interview that his right kidney is basically not functioning at all on its own and the stent,which has been adjusted EIGHT times(that might be what he was doing on Sundays while the Ford ad was being filmed) over the course of the Idol season, is there to keep some kind of flow going. He does seem very confident that the surgery will fix the problem

Also, there’s nothing exciting about seeing the same type of winner year after year. I think this year was more exciting than most because the pool of talent was so strong. Even with the strength of this year’s talent, I still believe in my heart of hearts that Scotty would’ve won over Jess and Josh.
Apparently, a large portion of the Idol mainstream is fine with the same type of winner year after year. But I think that a significant portion of viewers will just give up. Honestly, we all knew how this thing was going to end when pp made it to the top 12………WGWG will alway reign supreme on Idol.
Josh, Jess, Elise, and Hollie made the season exciting because of there talent. Many of us thought they were good enough to give us a refreshing new champion. However……same crap, different year. LOL!!! If that doesn’t let the air out of your sail, I don’t know what does.

Rickster, actually with the way things are going for the Braves(just lost four in a row to the Reds) they should have him on the mound pitching. That still doesn’t solve their hitting problems though. Based on what I have read he is a really good high school pitcher. Even got hit in the throat this year but no after effects. For a singer that’s not a good place to get hit.

Oxwinkle reminds me of a funny story – at my expense.
I used to listen to “The Kimmer” in the afternoon on the way home. When they cam back from the 5:00 news break, Kimmer would play “Up Around The Bend” and do some “Herp-ing & Ho-ing” (cadence calls from his Marine Corps days.)
I’d herp & ho right along with him.
One day I was at the former Hooters on Memorial Dr when the jukebox started playing “Up Around The Bend.” Instinctively, I started herping and hoing….till I realized I wasn’t in my car with the windows rolled up.
Boy… the stares I got.

Oh boy. I miss this morning, and y’all get on my sorest subject! Well, this will come as a huge surprise to y’all (haha) but I believe voting changes have been needed ever since the Taylor debacle.
People lose interest in the race when the outcome is predetermined. And let’s face it, that’s what Idol’s become. A race with some good singers all chasing to catch up with a mediocre WGWG.

Wouldn’t it be MUCH better for the show to have a winner like Carrie or Kelly, instead of yet another WGWG that people power-vote in and then don’t support post-show for more than a minute or two? Costing the show credibility, and making it the butt of many jokes.

And finally…. sure, change might bother some of the viewers who are power-vote-obsessed… but I bet not. Those people will still be curious enough to watch, and will probably find it a challenge to try and wrangle the system (how many email addresses can I use? how many FB pages?) But they won’t be able to do enough to control things the way they do now.
Changes might even win back some viewers who have left the show or are on the fence because of the WGWG domination. A friend was just saying to me this morning that she hasn’t watched in several seasons for that reason… but she was drawn back in this season by the talent. However, now she’s “thoroughly disgusted” (her words) and probably won’t watch again.

I was reading an awards article on the MTV site…which was hilarious in itself, but I think we can only post one link at a time…. anyway, it gave out tons of funny awards (because, you know, everyone should get a trophy just for participating.) But the best part was these predictions they made back in January.

The pics seem to all feature either a wig or thunder thighs, some of them have both. Also catsuits aren’t for everyone.
As to the voting I will cite the Fox affiliate’s story last week with the woman that claimed to have voted for Phillip 16,277 times on 3 phone lines. That was a week with a purported 2 hour voting period. Say she and others like her got in 25,000 this week, That would result in the record of 132 million being submitted by a little more than 5,000 uber fans. Making the power voters mad would have very little effect on the overall viewing numbers.
BTW, I tested the Skype voting method and was able to successfully vote after the EDT/CDT window had closed. The system as it is can be circumvented with VoIP for rapid and unlimited voice call voting during the allotted times for all time zones. Online and Facebook voting can be gamed as well utilizing proxy servers but with the human code verification it is too slow to be effective. To those that deemed the Skype thing an internet hoax here is a link to an official Skype blog touting their availability to vote on the Idol lines from anywhere in the world:

If they really want to tweak the show to respond to the ratings dip then letting the millions of viewers know that their ONE vote can count would be a worthy goal. Exactly, Orlando. I actually hadn’t voted in a couple of years before this, because there isn’t really any point.
I hope, hope, hope that people from the show monitor some of these blogs. And if they do, I hope they notice (and care) that so many of their long-time loyal viewers have become very disillusioned.
And it’s a shame they’re driving us away, because adults with good jobs are more apt to spend more money… both on iTunes and with the show’s advertisers. I would imagine most tweens are on a bit more limited budget.

And yes, I know he was “off-key Lee”… but he at least did interesting arrangements. (Hallelujah, Beautiful Day, The Boxer.) I’d rather be interested and have to cringe at a note or two, than doze off.
And I still don’t think Cook should be painted with the WGWG brush. The advantage didn’t exist for him back then….

I’ve not been an advocate for changes to the voting system in the past, but I am now. Technically better singers (as ranked by Whatnottosing) got spanked while one of the technically worst singers of the top 10 (ignoring that DeAndre fellow) coasted to a victory.
I do mean coasted. He even phoned it in a few weeks and was still untouchable. You all can kid yourselves by saying “It was a close race” but the guy was not in the bottom three until there were only three contestants left. There was nothing close about it. WGWG#5 had the competition in the bag before we hit the top 10.

And did anyone else notice that Jimmy didn’t give his usual thoughts during the finale? I’m willing to bet it’s because he stated Jessica should be the winner, and they didn’t want to show that and look foolish.

The voting system underwent a change with the Clay Aiken/Ruben Studdard debacle. How people figured out how to make block calls is beyond me but they did. From that time on the voting was handed over for a monintored system. In most contests you can vote more than once but there needs to be a limit for sure!

And Barbara, I also think Simon wanted David A. to win. Here is my theory on Simon (regulars who have heard me preach it before, feel free to ignore.
) –
I think he was happy with the show seasons 1-4. But then:
Season 5 – he hated Taylor. He finally just gave up and admitted it was a popularity contest.
Season 6 – nothing of note happened, so he probably figured the Taylor debacle was a fluke.
Season 7 – he was still fighting the fruitless “it’s a singing competition” battle and thought David A should have won
Season 8 – his disgust at Adam losing was crystal clear. He didn’t even stand up and clap for Kris’ win. (And I for one was SO happy to see Simon react that way. It validated the point that Idol doesn’t often find a talent like Adam’s, and for him not to win was an absolute disgrace. Simon’s refusal to clap was a statement to America of “What the H— were you thinking?”)

Barbara, I didn’t watch season 2, but was the block voting an issue even then?
(I think if I had watched, I would have preferred Clay or maybe even Kimberly Locke…. but I remember my husband trying to get me to watch, and he was completely torn between Clay and Reuben. He liked them both. The fact that it was such a good contest, got me watching the finale night and then I watched season 3.)

Barb – I’d say block voting. I remember the Dial Idol software and power voting being talked about for the first time. And I thought that season was when the popularity-contest problem started.
I remember Simon criticizing and criticizing Taylor, and trying to tell the public he was weak and should go home… but then finally literally throwing his hands in the air and saying “It clearly doesn’t matter what I say anymore. So whatever. That was good.” (sarcastically.)

I think Taylor won by default. Better singers went home as he slipped under the wire. He was a nice guy but just an average singer.
Ruben was another singer who did mostly ballads. But when 1 vote could be counted as hundreds there should have been a do over. Clay did and still can sing circles around Ruben. But truth be told I liked him too!

I don’t know, Barbara, I think the Soul Patrol got a little out of hand (and annoying) and propelled him way further than he should have gone. (disclaimer, though… I was a huge Katharine fan.) But I never did figure out how him twitching and woo-ing his way through the final, won out over her beautiful voice.
But then again, I was probably the only person on earth who wasn’t mad when Daughtry left, because it meant Katharine stayed.

Exactly, Barbara. And I do own several of Kris’ songs from iTunes, and like them! But Adam was something special. He was one of those rare singers where I could not WAIT to watch the show each week, to see what he’d do. You couldn’t have paid me to DVR it back then… you BET I was home watching it live every week.
Mercedes and I were saying at one point earlier in the season, how that is a really good measure… when there’s someone you simply can’t wait to watch. Who makes you so impatient for show night to roll around.

I agree. I do not like others singing my favorite songs. No matter how good they are it never fails to disappoint. Hearing anyone sing Harry Nilsson’s I Can’t Live if Living is Without You makes me cringe!!
Then to hear them call it Mariah Carey’s song is just all shades of wrong

I’m willing to bet mortgage money that another WGWG will win next year! Really. I don’t think anyone on this blog could prove why this won’t hold true. Although one vote per person would prove to be a substantial change, I don’t think Idol has the nads to do it. So, I see no reason why a WGWG won’t win at least the next two years down the road.

Barbara – I sometimes do, sometimes don’t. I remember being thrilled when they announced Adam would sing U2’s “One” – which is pretty much at the top of my all-time favorite list. But as much as I adored Adam… my reaction after the first few notes was “Oh. Not so sure about this.”
Though I replayed it a few times and grew to really like it.

I think it’s too early to rank Phil on the list of WGWGs.
Jessica losing to Phil isn’t nearly the travesty that Crystal losing to Lee was, and here’s why: Jessica and Phil are apples and oranges. Crystal and Lee were apples and apples, singing similar music with similar style, only she did it far, far better.
Say what you will about Kris, but he still gets airplay on B98.5 and Star 94. I rarely hear Adam there. I also rarely hear David Cook there, which surprises me. He needs a hit–he’s fading.
Taylor Hicks seems to be the most underrated Idol winner. He’s a solid performer and a good singer, and he’s worked steadily since his win.
Thank goodness I haven’t had to hear anything from Scotty since last year’s finale. If you don’t listen to country, he doesn’t come up. At. All.

Hmm, this thing about airplay on radio stations… don’t quite get it, since I seldom listen to radio. But when you hear Adam Lambert play at Neiman Marcus AND Walmart, you know an Artist is in the building, so to speak.

OK. finally watched Duets this morning. It could grow on me. Not sure how the voting really works. Really like Jennifer Nettles. I have one word for you all: Quddus?!? Don’t like him. Don’t like his name. Don’t like his look. He reminded me of the gay, black kid from My So Called Life. The studio set up looks a little cheap. They could maybe change that up if the show does well. Not a bad debut. I did think a lot of people were better than J Rome, too, but we’ll see.

Except noooooo…. not Phillip for Peeta! I wish him well with his surgery, but he’s really beginning to bug me with some of his post-show appearances.
Dude. Back off on the “I just wanna play music… must do my own thing at all costs” bit just a LITTLE. You know, if you’d let them, there are people out there who just miiiight be able to give you good advice. You don’t have experience in the business. They do.
Also please, nooooo on Randy/Cinna. Cinna was my favorite character after Katniss, and I’d NEVER degrade him by comparing him with that bozo Randy. Same for Caesar/Ryan. Ryan can’t even hold a candle.
I’d include a couple of alumni instead:

And Nutmeg – good points, but I actually think Jess losing to PP might be an even bigger travesty! Crystal was great… I was and still am a fan… but Jess really has a rare gift. I believe Phil only won *because* he is a WGWG.

Interesting article. Apparently, this year for the first time only the winner is guaranteed a recording contract. (So much for our usual theory that all of the top 4 or 5 “will be just fine”.)
One analyst cites reduced viewership as a reason for the contract reductions. He also cites the fact that there hasn’t been a super-successful Idol since Carrie.
“These contracts don’t pay off,” he said, contrasting the long list of “Idol” alumni who have been dropped by record labels with those who have thriving careers. “It seems like the successes that people like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood have had are the flukes.”
Ya THINK it could be because… ummm… let me see now, the power-voters forget all about their chosen cute one after he’s showered in confetti? Decreased confidence in America’s voting habits = decreased numbers of people who continue to watch and care about the show.
Carrie and Kelly are the flukes because they’re part of only a very few years that America’s actually voted for a great talent….
Oh well. At least Philip’s cuter than Scotty was.

@Jenny — Thanks for the link. They can pay 50 million combined to Ryan, J. Lo & S. Tyler, but need to start crimping on support for everyone but the winner. And the Winners contract hasn’t been increased for years.
While there are always complaints about the Judges, but this year it was even brought-up by a great number of the Media writers that report on the Idol sreies – that Tyler offers little to the show this year, J. Lo is getting more way out of it than she offers in holding an audience, etc.
While Simon said there would be a “bloodbath” of changes after the X-Factor debacle — then Nicole and Paula were replaced — Idol is in dire need of a Judge makeover. It’s more and more about the Judges with Idol every year, so I expect to see a change in fading stars next year.
Other thing I have read also indicate that Nigel won’t have as much say in what happens, unless he personally puts-up some major money gaurantees to the network. He will still be the “Frontman Spokesman” for the show, but his judgement is no longer seen as the key to success.

Sweden just won the “Eurovision” song contest – a misnomer, since it seems half of the contestants are from Asia. I checked out the winning number – a nightmarish melange of melisma, windmachine, and flailing arms. The song, performed in English, was incomprehensible. Runner up was a trio of grandmas in big skirts and sensible shoes. They performed a baking routine.
So yes, there seems to be worse shows than our song fests on TV. But the Eurovision Schlager Festival gets an audience of 125 million!

I have been a fan of the show for the past ten years, and have enjoyed reading everyone’s comments on the blog, even if I do not say much. I did not watch all of season 11. I watched it until the top 16.t but it just seemed like the same thing over and over again. The judges would say the same words, “you were to pitchy” “this song seemed to big for you” and so on. I doubt I will continue to watch it.

Thought it noteworthy that the National Memorial Day Concert held on the west lawn of the Capitol and broadcast by PBS featured Daughtry and Jessica Sanchez among others this year. Sanchez performed The Prayer and did a better rendition than she did in the competition. Of course being able to perform the entire song helped the performance not to mention having the National Symphony Orchestra as a backup band. She also belted out the lead on God Bless America as the closing number in fine form. Not quite Kate Smith but still quite impressive in a pound for pound comparison

Yes, “bland” describes it pretty well. A judges’ competition is what I call it, too. I am of the same mind as you re: Kelly. I love her and want her to do well, but I think this cheats her a bit and casts her in a light we are not used to seeing.

What got me with Phillip was the time J-Lo was piping out about how much she just loved him and Ryan asked Phillip about it in front of cameras back stage and Phillip said “Does her daddy let her date if so get me her number” LOL.
