AMERICAN IDOL: The Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips performs his victory song during the sason 11 AMERICAN IDOL GRAND FINALE at the Nokia Theatre on Weds. May 23, 2012 in Los Angeles, California. CR: Michael Becker/FOX
Sure, the “Idol” blog is dead. (Long live the “Idol” blog!)
But the “Idol” blog community migrated over here for season 11 and I am forever grateful. Since season four, Carrie Underwood’s year, I’ve been writing daily screeds about this show. Eight seasons, 3,000-plus entries and more than 200,000 comments later, we arrive here. A few of you have been around for much of that time and still wonder how Taylor Hicks won season five. Others arrived more recently.
I apologize if I miss a few names but here are folks that I can’t help but give a shout out to:
First and foremost, the official moderator of this blog Deirdre held fort again for no pay, just glory and massive ego gratification. She kept the fly-by nasties at bay, welcomed the newbies and expressed her opinions with smarts and perspective. She also made my job easier – much easier.
So thanks to Rickster, for actually looking forward to this “thank you” column yesterday. (You knew you wanted to get referenced first but Deirdre is always No. 1 here.)
And JTesla, thanks for being my biggest fan. You are way too kind, even when I make typos and go way too long between “Idol” entries. Then there’s my bud Kelly & Carrie Fan, the one person who knows more trivia about “Idol” than I do.
Others who spiced up the group’s snark-a-meter or just gave us blog-level gravitas: Alex, Sam-A, Highlander, Harriett, Nana, RxDawg, JD, Mercedes S, Jenny, Pitchy, bknsty14, Seth T, DanJ, Karen, Andi, missnadine, G, Vast Wastrel, RK, Jubie, Woodpappy, MyPatootie.
Then there were some funny folks over on the Cover it Live blog who seldom if ever came over here. In fact, most will probably never see this but I have to give them credit, too. There was our most valuable contributor, the frequently funny Weary Traveller, who used his hotel room time to join us here. Jennifer Hopez was far more amusing than Jennifer Lopez. Yummiecake2001 was sweet as can be. Uncle Buck gave us the phrase “songbot.” (Thank you!). Then there’s Carrie, Sierra, Sheila, Always Late (who was indeed Always Late), emily and Josh, to name a few. Live blogging is a bit distracting but often rewarding when things get dull on screen.
Without you all, I’d have nothing, paraphrasing the most over-used song in “Idol” history. (No offense, Whitney.) I’d just be talking to myself. And as my wife knows, I do that enough as it is.
For those who wander off during the off season, don’t! I will continue to blog about all things “Idol,” plus “Duets,” “The X Factor” and “The Voice.” And since you’re in my much broader land of TV and radio, other topics far and wide as well.
I will listen in on the press conferences this afternoon for Phillip and Jessica and will add those to the blog later.

ROHO, it’s been fun.
I really like the banter and my hopes were to dish out a few laughs. Lord knows I got a bucket full of laughs from the posters.
I’ve never been part of an interactive blog except this one and I will surely be here again next year.
Thanks, ROHO, and my fellow posters.

Rodney – I am surprised to see my name here
. I rarely comment on AI blogs (maybe 10 times all season) but always on your other blogs – I find them really well written, researched, and delivered. I stopped watching AI a couple of seasonds ago, but check your blogs daily. Thanks for the shout out! You are like the Ryan Seacrest of AJC – I don’t think anyone at your company works as hard!

Thank you, Rodney! It’s been an easy year. The “nasties” have been few and far between(I believe I only had to call for help a couple of times) and we added so many nice people to the fold.
I started on this blog as many people do; popping in to argue with someone about an Idol. And I stayed because I was treated kindly and with respect. It isn’t easy to find a blog that works as hard as this one does to let people speak their minds without fear of the dreaded troll.
Rodney, I know you fought hard to keep this blog going this year. The changes at the ajc were scary for us regulars but we honestly feel just as comfortable here in this little apartment as we did in our big single family home. You did that and we really appreciate it!
Looking forward to the continuation of our blog family and, as always, the addition of new family members!

Thanks for the mention, RoHo! Without you and yor work here (doesn’t FEEL like work, does it now?), American Idol wouldn’t be half as fun to watch. Thanks to Deirdre for helping to keep order in class, and always bringing thoughtful comments. In addition to reading Idol comments, I also like reading bits about fellow posters’ triumphs (Pitchy’s daughter – yay!) and tribulations (we’ve all been there). Never thought I’d add another dimension to my life when I started following this blog…

I was as opposed as anyone to bringing the Idol blog over to the Radio/TV blog. But then I realized I can treat it like I use a DVR. If there’s a thread I don’t want to look at (or a performance like the Man/Fan duet from last night) I just zip past it.
And thanks for everything Rodney.

As for people having problems with PP (NOT A REAL SINGER!!!) winning Idol, I wouldn’t consider Bruce Springsteen or Bob Dylan REAL SINGERS either. But what they bring – words, with meaning and melody, and an ability to connect with an adoring audience – all this is what makes them Idols.

Mercedes, Deirdre, et al: don’t forget the last 6 episodes of “The Closer” start first week July, “Falling Skies” is back sometime mid-June. Predictions: months ago they were made and for the first time ever I nailed it. I picked Phillip Phillips to win. I know this is a moot point since the show if finished, but I do think any of the Top 7 could have won this thing if the judges weren’t involved. Their comments and suggestions really hindered some contestants, and their over-the-top love fest with J&J came back to haunt them. If the judges weren’t even on the show things could have been different. J&J wouldn’t have been the recipients of a voter backlash and who knows who would have won? It certainly wouldn’t have been 7th place finisher Jessica “Mulligan” Sanchez, but someone else may have snuck in. But alas, the judges are sadly a part of the show.

Here’s a few “pros” sharing their thoughts on Screamin’ J and the F-word:
Annie Barrett @ EW.com:
Speaking of complete lunacy, Joshua Ledet and an unbeweavable Fantasia Barrino shared the stage — or, more accurately, ditched it — on a blistering scream-off loosely based on the song “Take Me to the Pilot.”
Todd Martens @ LATimes.com:
Hey America, we’re sorry this guy didn’t win: Nearly 25 minutes into the finale there was nary a sight of Sanchez. Yet third-place finisher Joshua Ledet sure was given prominent positioning. He was brought out to sing Elton John’s “Take Me to the Pilot” with Fantasia, but this wasn’t the soul scorcher’s best performance. The last few verses of the song were little more than the two of them trading yelps, like attack dogs playing chicken with each other.
Chloe Melas | HollywoodLife.com
Fantasia was there to sing with Joshua Ledet and fans say that she was even making up lyrics to Elton John‘s “Take Me To The Pilot.”

“But it appears dressing like cat woman is trendy these days because when Chaka showed up to sing the hit “I’m Every Woman,” she was in the tightest sequined getup ever on American Idol!
Then she caused another stir on the red carpet when she said she’d love to take J.Lo’s spot if she doesn’t return to American Idol: “They could use a little bit of truth, honesty. I’d like that.”

Catsuit or nor catsuit, Chaka lost a ton of weight. She looked good. However, I don’t think anyone should wear a catsuit on national television, but this sentiment is coming from a woman.

I read recently that Chaka lost sixty lbs, but that cat suit had everything pulled up tight
She was super fine back in the days of Rufus. I think she would be an objective judge. IMO, she gave the most candid interviews after Whitney died.

I must say that I was a bit surprised at how angry people could get over this show! I love watching and rooting for favorites but in the end it is just a show! When it is over it doesn’t effect my life as I live it today. No matter who wins or who doesn’t life goes on. Save all that anger for something that counts and put it to good use to bring about change.
Personally I am going to work tostamp out skin tight bodysuits!! Just so no one, not one single person EVER feels the need to poke their eyes out!

Our young winner is already standing up to the idol machine:
“The song that I did tonight that supposedly is my single, it’s not really my single, I told them it’s not my single.” Phillips explained that his passion for lyrics and music trumps even the best pitched pop song. “I have my own stories to tell,” he said, “[But] I couldn’t do my song [on the finale]; we just didn’t have enough time.”
“I’m really glad people like the song,” said Phillips. “It’s a great song but I’m still ready to do my own thing.”

Rihanna could wear a catsuit on national television and get away with it. I had forgotten that she was on the show last night… funny how someone busting their pants will do that to you.
Thinking back over it, last night was kind of disappointing. It used to be that you’d have each of the top 8 or 10 sing a solo with a big name artist, then there would be group sings peppered with star power. The show last night went soft on the star power. I understand the solo from Rihanna, but then again from Jennifer Lopez, and Steven Tyler with no Idol’s in the mix? It was a finale that left the contestants behind. The contestants were an afterthought at best.

I feel like I learned more than I contributed, which is a “good thang”! Oh, by the way, think now that we have a winner from South Georgia we are going to have to change WGWG to “White Guy With Grit(s)”! Somewhat like the very popular T-shirt in the South that says “G-R-I-T-S” then beneath it “Girls Raised In The South”.

I saw Phillip on one of the morning shows earlier – CBS? He gave a very sweet, humble quote.
(not verbatim… just to the best of my memory…): “I’m not really that good a singer, but I love getting up there on stage and trying to entertain. Music is fun.”
For me, that perfectly sums up what I both liked and disliked about him!
Liked: Him in general – his sweet southern boy personality and his obvious love for music.
Disliked: His weaker voice than the others.
Anyway, thought y’all might like that.
You can probably google CBS morning show if you want to actually see it.

Aaaaaand another opinion about the Fantasia debacle:
Speaking of skulls being blown off, Josh-Josh Laday performed a screaming contest with his true idol Fantasia Barrino and it was magnificent. It was the two of them bobo-ing the hell around stage, hands doing good, wild things, voices going up up up up into wails, lightning and wind surrounding them. But the best thing about it, oh good glory the best thing about it, was Fantasia’s whole look. She had in about six hundred feet of flat, glossy extensions that made her look like a crazy mermaid, and she was wearing a skintight sequined jumpsuit with big holes in the legs. It was amazing. It was probably what the inmates wear in the gay ward of Arkham Asylum. Really tremendous stuff. I’m so glad you’re around, Fantasia. Never leave us.

D @ 1:25 — I saw Jessica on a red carpet show after the Tuesday final — where she very sweetly and politely said she didn’t really like her single either. LOL!
Didn’t they let Crystal and Lee do “real” songs as their singles, on their year? Yesterday when we were laughing at all the titles, I looked them up and remembered that. Lee’s was “Beautiful Day” (U2). And Crystal’s (I think) was “Up To The Mountain”. Wonder why they went back away from that? It was much better….

SN: Being one of the “resident r&b dudes” on the blog, I must say that I enjoyed the Jennifer Holiday and Jessica duet “I’m Telling You….”. Us r&b fans dig those type of performances. So if you’re not used to it, I understand some of the crazy comments. There’s always a display of strong emotion, showmanship (sometimes grandstanding), and verbal gymnastics. Jennifer made SURE that everyone knew that she was the original, and that Jess still had some more homework to do. However, Jess hung in there and did a good job.

D, I haven’t been able to post as much recently due to being busier at work, but I am definitely still around. and will try to chime in more often. So, yes, keep the questions coming.
I also agree on the fact that Idol focuses more on the contestants than the judges. At least, they aren’t as blatantly self-promoting as The Voice. Well, with the exception of JLo, but one instead of 4. Maybe she should move over to The Voice! To be fair, the judges on The Voice are younger than Steven, Randy and JLo and their careers are more active, thus the massive promotion.

Since most of my thoughts on the finale were in the form of a rant last night… here’s something different.
To all who thought the engagement was cheesy – no way! I thought it was beyond sweet, and was Ace’s way of picking the spot that would mean a great deal to them. I loved it!
(D – the second Ryan invited them on stage, I actually said “oh my gosh, I wonder if he’s going to propose?” )
I think maybe they do need to disallow instruments next year. And they need to be very, very careful about putting cute white boys through. (Fair? No. Necessary? Yes.)
I don’t even have words for the screamfest. Oh. My.
Can you imagine if Joshua’d won?
I loved “And I Am Telling You (I’m Not Going)” … though Jennifer Holliday DID look a little… crazy-eyed… ??
I cracked up at whoever said it looked like Jennifer was about to eat Jessica. Though in her defense, she’s used to the Broadway stage, not the tight TV shots. The stage requires those giant faces and gestures.
But anyway. What power voices!! And Jess hanging right in on every note?? Amazing.
And finally, I realized I missed Colton! I wish he’d been the WG in the finale instead.

If you go to http://www.americanidol.com, there’s a “survey” thing toward the bottom, which lets you both click the response you agree with and write (read vent) all about what you love and hate about the show, and just exactly how you feel about the judges. Needless to say, I was 15 mins late leaving for lunch – I had a LOT to say about this season and especially the judges.
Everyone please go there and speak your mind about the judging and what is wrong with the show – maybe we can get some changes made. Even get to rate JLo’s “performances” and those of the guest stars this season (though they didn’t mention Kelly).

Now that Idol is over, I’m looking forward to the following:
1. Duets – Interested to see what they offer that the other shows don’t. Outside of AI, where will this show rank?
2. XFactor – How will the show format change, if at all? New judges fit? Will there be a WGWG in the finals mix?
3. The Voice – I believe they are headed towards another season in September. Format tweaks? So far, their winners have been bald r&b dudes (opposite of Idol). Will next season bring about a change?
4. AGT – Who cares? I just enjoy this next generation of the Gong Show 2.0.
5. Walking Dead – ***waving at Sam A***
6. Breaking Bad – Does anyone watch this show.
7. Sing Off – So the best “singing” competition is being cancelled? I signed the online petition.
8. Anticipated Albums? Melanie Amaro, Jessica Sanchez, Joshua, Julliet Sims, and Jamar. I’ll pass on the pp.
9. Guilty Pleasure Shows – ABDC, Sunday’s Best, Amateur Nigh at The Apollo, Freestyle Friday, and Jersey Shore (don’t judge me, the chicks are hot).
10. American Idol – I’ll continue to be a viewer, but no longer participate as a voter. I’ll be interested to see what tweaks will be made, if any. I’m expecting pretty much the same outcome for years to come, but maybe the other 8-9 will be entertaining to spark some banter.

And, Fword hasn’t been pregnant this year, so maybe you guys could fight it out for that role. Only married guys need apply.
I couldn’t stand the horrid noise, so I changed channels and came back only in the last few secs, so sadly (or lucky for my sanity) I missed the “Screaminghood of the Spliting Pants” – I thought Pitchy’s description of the flesh that lay beneath was pretty accurate I’m sure. Barb, the Dead Zone, yes!! Another good one. And The Shining. First one of his I ever read (and the Jack Nicholson movie made me nuts with its inaccuracies.) But the movies can never, ever capture the depths of what he does in the books. I wish they’d just stop trying.
Pet Sematary – quite literally the scariest book I’ve EVER read. (But a joke of a movie.)
IT – best for character development. (Movie couldn’t possibly capture it.)

I know, Mercedes. That’s the one of his I’ve re-read the second most. The miniseries at least came closer than the Jack N. movie… at least it kept the hedge animals. But there’s still just no way to capture it. (And Wendy was supposed to be pretty… not look like Olive Oyl from Popeye…)

Jenny – I’m with you on HIMYM. Loved Barney with Quinn. It’s worn a little thin and probably in the last year, but at least we will get an answer at the end. Also agree with Survivor. It’s entertaining. The Bachelor and Bachelorette. (Like the Bachelor better). Slow moving train wreck. Grey’s and PP. Lots of other shows, too. I really do need a life.

Yep, bk14, I meant both Bach and Bach-ette. I like Bachelor better because of the catty girl trainwrecks. (One word for you…. Courtney.)
HIMYM – I just can’t see a brand new character as the mother. That just won’t ring true. They sure love to fool us, so I will always have hope it’s Robin.
And Survivor… I was almost jumping up and down waiting for Jeff to call out Colton at the live show. Worst. Character. EVER!!!

In the grand scheme of things, I don’t think the loss really phased Jessica that much. It probably phased her fans harder. Of course she would’ve been happy with the cherry on top win, but I think her plate was full of so many offers and plans that her head has been spinning for weeks. Essentially, Jess won weeks ago, along with Josh. PP will do whatever it is he does, but I think Jess will be big.
SN: Look for Jessica to perform the national anthem at one of the upcoming Pacquio fights.

Ted always calls her Aunt Robin, though. Loved Chelsea on Survivor (any guy would). And that accent. Colton was the worst. Hated courtney on the bachelor. Ben was an idiot. They deserve each other. Until the Fan/Man duo last night, Courtney was the worst thing ever on television.

Salem’s Lot, yes! The second of his I read, after The Shining. And after that I was addicted.

Jenny, “The Stand” was a decent TV-show. More than decent. I also liked ’salem’s Lot” (book). “Cujo” was my first “off” King book – hated ending.
“Th Exorcist” did creep me out – three times. Reading book, then watching movie, then watching movie with additional footage.
Scariest non-fiction book – “Helter Skelter”. Read it when hubby was off on business trip and every light in the house stayed on for those two nights I was home alone,

I know, bk14. I’m hoping “Aunt Robin” is just a trick. Probably not… but I’m a diehard. (Hollie, anyone?)
D… but you didn’t weigh in, Robin with Barney or Ted?? And Team Gale or Team Peeta? I thought I was Gale, but the cave scenes swayed me to Peeta.
Bk, actually I thought Courtney was the worst thing ever on TV… until Colton. The show almost became unwatchable for me. Thank goodness he left when he did. And it took me all season to figure out that Chelsea looks just like one of my best college friends.

I am going to be in a quandary soon, with all the shows coming on the same nights and the DVR only recording two at the same time. Harriett: I was a come-lately on “Revenge” – my sister insisted I needed to watch it. Have been watching 5 weeks, and saw on demand the two shows prior to the first of those. She caught me up on what happened in the first few.
She’s quite the resourceful young lady, eh?! The show last week about Jack’s dog about killed me – cried and cried. I suspect the big event last night either didn’t really happen, or Victoria was not onboard (trying to be discreet in case anyone hasn’t seen last night’s show). ‘Emily” needs to come clean with Jack and get this mess of theirs sorted out.
Jenny: “The Stand” was outstanding, both the book and the mini-series. My alltime fave is “Salem’s Lot” – I’ve always liked vampires in the Bela Lugosi mode, not the Twilight variety over-romanticised.
I did enjoy the “Hunger Games” trilogy – but missed all the complications and plots of my beloved Harry Potter series – my all time favorites. They are so rich in characters, atmosphere and story I’ve read them over and over.
Am anxiously awaiting “The Closer”, “Pretty Little Liars”, “Falling Skies” and “Walking Dead” – and looking forward to giving Kelly’s show a shot tonight. Just a bit saturated with singing shows right now, but I like Kelly enough to give it a good try.

D & Barb: I love Dean Koontz – my alltime fave is “Hideaway” – starts with a guy driving in a rain storm on a highway above a river, when his car runs off the road……. Also love the one about the little boy who went blind at 3 and led a tragic life -Dad killed in wreck driving wife to hospital to give birth to the boy – can’t remember the name, maybe “From the Corner of His Eye”. Also loved “Watchers” and that great dog. And loved “The Face” about the hollywood star’ son. I’ve read about 20 or so DK books – loved most of them.
Used to love Mary Higgins Clark, her first book “Where are the Children” was a masterpiece. Also loved “Loves Music, Loves to Dance”. Her recent books are dreadful.

The question was asked and for those keeping score, born and raised in South GA (about 50 miles from PPs hometown) lived in Nashville TN the last 15 yrs. and now in South Carolina(found my MayberryRFD). Bet I am one of the oldest, if not THE, on here at 66. Anyone older? I don’t plan on watching “Duets” as I don’t really like duet-style music or singing. Just me, I guess. I’m not too crazy about “The Voice” either as it’s too much about the judges. I may watch one or two of the “Duets” but somewhat got my fill when they did it in Nashville for 2 or 3 yrs. back in 07-08 I think it was. So you see “Duets” is not an original idea after all. The duo of “Steel Magnolia”(husband/wife) came out of that competition. Some may have heard of them.

But thanks again to Rodney for a good blog site and reviews – and to the blog police, Deirdre, and several others who help keep this thread from a hostile-take-over of looney’s.
While we all have strong opinions sometimes, there are more insightful observations and interesting links posted on this site than others I have seen.
There have been quotes we’ve seen from Fox Exec’s, Nigel, etc. — that there will be “tweaks” next year. I think we will see at least one Judge change, if not 2. The most likely will be J. Lo.

I seen “Can You Duet” as well. there were a number of those that fell apart after the show, but Steele Magnolia stood-out because they were really good and had an attractive female singer, and the same with Joey & Rory. Maybe now we can get back to more news about radio etc., lest you have to change the name of the blog to “reality tv blog.” ; ) For example, whatever happened with the possible format change of 106.7 (which had been mentioned here previously)? etc. : ) You guys probably know this but really, Idol et al are simply warmed-over versions of the original “amateur hours” from many decades ago. Morning!
Leaving for Savannah in five.
“Men In Black -3″ – more enjoyable than I expected. Cute and retro, with Josh Brolin playing a younger agent K, i,e. Tommy Lee Jones. Many weird aliens, natch, good and bad.
“Chernobyl Diaries” – young and stupid Western students, two Europeans (somewhat smart) and four Americans ( the kind that go screaming into where they shoudn’t be, like exloded nuclear reactors) decide to take an Adventure Trip to Prityat, the little town next to Chernobyl, to see the wasted “sights”, now reclaimed by nature. Small budget, good effects. Many good, unexpected scares, holdings of breath. and so on. I had “fun”.

Thanks for the mention Rodney and I do enjoy the discourse here. Idol is not the juggernaut it once was but is still propelling Fox to number 1 even though in many ways Fox doesn’t deserve it.
