AMERICAN IDOL: Host Ryan Seacrest introduces the Finalists Phillip Phillps and Jessica Sanchez make their entrance for the season 11 AMERICAN IDOL GRAND FINALE at the Nokia Theatre on Weds. May 23, 2012 in Los Angeles, California. CR: Michael Becker/FOX
He was a favorite to win early on.
Favorites like that on this show typically lose. (Danny Gokey anyone?)
But Leesburg’s Phillip Phillips bucked strong competitors and painful kidney stones to take home the crown.
He also became the first winner with Georgia ties after 11 seasons. The state has gotten close before with Justin Guarini (season one), Diana Degarmo (season two), Bo Bice (season four) and Lauren Alaina (season 10.)
And speaking of DeGarmo, her beau Ace Young (season 5) proposed to her on air on the stage. Was she caught offguard? Maybe. Sure beats proposing at a baseball stadium, eh? Anyway, this is the first “Idol’ coupling that has become an engagement! When I interviewed them a few weeks back, they sounded incredibly happy together.
After Ryan Seacrest (from Dunwoody) informed Phillips the win, he tried to sing his coronation song “Home” but broke down partway through, took off his guitar and hugged his family. It was truly touching.
Reports are that Phillips, after he does press the next couple of days, will fly back to Georgia and have surgery for his kidney issues.
By some measures, this was a troubling year for “Idol.”
The show lost a whopping 23% of its viewers due to increased competition and age. The judges were panned frequently for zealous over-the-top praise and standing ovations galore. But fans who stuck with season 11 were impassioned and dedicated to many of the singers this season, including runner-up Jessica Sanchez, third-place finisher Joshua Ledet and others. Overall, the season was a satisfying one.
Producers have to wonder: what will it take to change the type of winner? For five years in a row, the white guy with a guitar (nicknamed WGWG) has been the victor (though last year, the dude did sing country.) The trend could not be stopped this season, even after a record 132 million votes.
Phillips is charming with his an interesting style, even if it reminds folks of other artists. He seems both laid back and happy go lucky. It’s a combo that was hard to beat. He was never in danger of being voted off, based on how patterns played out this season. And as I noted earlier, he was a favorite even entering the top 13, a trend that only veered off path briefly three weeks ago, when his illness was clearly affecting his performances. He looked like he wanted to go home at a certain point.
But he rallied in the top 4 and gave some strong performances near the end, including a cover of Damien Rice’s “Volcano” and the original song “Home” last night.
As for the finale tonight:
- It opened with a promising cover of Bruno Mars’ “Runaway Baby” from the top 12 (minus Jermaine Jones) in all (unflattering) white.
- John Fogerty, with blatantly dyed hair, graciously rocked two big CCR songs with a thrilled Phillip Phillips.
- Mantasia -as in Joshua Ledet and Fantasia – go to church with “Take Me To the Pilot.” It’s a big hot mess, a screamfest that’s taken into the audience and continues even as the producers cut to commercial. Fantasia is wearing an impressively unflattering gown that splits at the thighs, making said thights look even bigger. Joshua dresses impeccably as usual.
- A hysterical blooper real of Jimmy Iovine calling Jennifer Lopez Jessica (that’s his daughter’s name). He does it over and over and over again. It’s still funny the 10th time around.
- Chaka Khan medley. Shannon Magrane, who I barely remember, stands out like a giraffe, towering over Skylar Laine. The dresses are very… spangly and very… tight. Vocally, it’s decent and Chaka looks good for a 59-year-old woman, even in a catsuit.
- Rihanna blinds us with lights and smoke and cubes and dancers while singing “Where Have You Been.” Not sure if I saw clowns and an elephant, too. It looks like something “The X Factor” would conjure up.
- One of my favorite moments was seeing Skylar and her doppelganger Reba McEntire cut it up with “Turn Up the Radio.” As one of the live bloggers said, Skylar could be Reba’s long-lost love child!
- Steven Tyler gives us a warped tour of his dressing room, replete with… a live monkey? No cocaine or strippers, though.
- Jessica returns with “I Will Always Love You.” Now we know why she didn’t sing it last night, though she should have.
- A Neil Diamond medley. Colton Dixon mugs a lot and does the best Neil Diamond imitation until the real thing comes along. “Sweet Caroline” ends it. Woohoo!
- Randy Jackson’s cliche o’ meter includes “You can sing the phone book.” So in a funny spoof, the contestants literally sing a phone book. Scarily, I bet many of the kids had never opened a phone book in their life! (Why not just Google it?)
- Jennifer Lopez is singing…er… lip syncing and dancing. I enjoy it for what it’s worth. Flo Rida and others join her as she thrusts her hips a lot and looks hot.
- Ace and Diana get engaged. Sniff.
- Hollie sings “You’ll Never Walk Alone” with season 6 winner Jordin Sparks. Jordin looks fab. And they sound fab together.
- In honor of Robin Gibb, the men do a Bee Gees medley. Sadly, with times a wastin’, a Donna Summer medley with the ladies is scrapped for time.
- Jennifer Holliday and Jessica Sanchez square off on “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” Yowza. This is powerhouse vs. powerhouse. Scary faces on Jennifer’s face!
- Aerosmith’s Joe Perry makes amends for TV ratings by joining Steven Tyler and the rest of the band. It’s actually a fun few minutes as they rock it out with abandon.
- And if you have a good memory, Bo and Carrie sang “Up Where We Belong” during the finale seven years ago. So Phillip and Jessica reprise it and they sound lovely.

The “Proposal” was nothing but a publicilty stunt. Neither of them have anything major going on, so this was just getting their names out there. That type of proposal on a stage as big as Idol should be reserved for winners who are thriving in the music industry, ie; Carrie, or Kelly.

Morning!
While Jessica may have a good voice (and I’ll stand by “good” – she’s not the best thing since sliced bread!), she also didn’t connect well to many of the songs she sang. There were many times while singing a somber love ballad (like “I Will Always Love You”) that she’d be standing there smiling away. That’s probably why someone here dubbed her ’singbot’ (or was it ’songbot’) early on.
On the other hand, regarding Phillip’s “artistry” or “musicality”, he often changes a song so much that he loses the melody completely! (A valid point that Steven T. tried to make a few times.) And that’s why a lot of his performances sound the same.
Those of you who keep saying AI is a singing contest need a paradigm shift. Idol hasn’t been about who is the best vocalist since they started allowing contestants to play instruments.

Very excited for Phillip. I got tired of him midway through but, in my opinion, he got better over the last few weeks. Last week sealed it for me, I was a fan and I loved him last night. I had tears in my eyes at the end when emotions hit him and was glad to see him head for his family.
I didn’t actually “watch” all of it, I am re-doing my home office and was painting. My favorite moments (not in order) were: 1) the engagement – AWWWWW!!!! Glad to see both of them happy and successful, 2) Reba and Skylar – I just loved Skylar through the competition and pairing her with Reba was perfect. I do love country music, and 3) Hollie and Jordan. I liked Hollie much better than Jessica, but think it is a genre thing. I don’t care for the screaming and I didn’t care for Jessica’s duet last night.

I love PP! I’m glad he won. And I felt he won because he didn’t “Put on such a fake show”, he was orginal to his art; true bare bones music. His style and Josh’s is totaly different from the same old country/Pop music that is always on Idol. Out of all the contestants I would buy Josh Ledet and PP’s CD.

From top to bottom I think this years Idol had the best top 10 they’ve ever had! Phillip, Joshua, Jessica, Hollie and Skylar could go on to be stars. It’s possible that the entire top 10 sign some kind of deal although HeeJun may be better served acting.
I was glad to see Philip show emotion. Like many I thought he didn’t care about winning. And while I wanted Joshua to win I realize Philip went through hell with his kidney issue. If you’ve ever had kidney stones it’s no walk in the park so he gets much respect from me from going through his ordeal and staying in the competition.
Did the best singer, best voice win? NO! But not since Carrie has the best singer won. I do hope Idol makes some changes, maybe they need to stop contestants from playing instruments to balance how some people view/judge the shows contestants. It’s clear the WGWG has some kind of advantage. Regardless the show was good this year. Now we just need Jimmy as a judge!

Wow, last night’s show was a classic. It has to be the highest rated comedy show of the season. Here’s a few of the audio and visual comedy “highlights”.
(1) The duet of Joshua and Fantasia. Absolutely the funniest unintentional piece of comedy in American Idol’s history. Fantasia’s wig, Fantasia’s dress, Fantasia’s voice, just Fantasia. She sounded like she was giving breech birth without meds. Joshua’s screams sounded like someone finally passing that impacted stool that’s been lingering for a week or two.
(2) Ace shamelessly plugging the jeweler who made the engagement ring and AI letting him get away with it without monetary compensation.
(3) Fantasia’s dress.
(4) The phone book gag with Randy and him being told to “get some new material”.
(5) Neil Diamond having to walk down steps. I didn’t know if he would make it.
(6) Chunka Chan’s skin tight outfit.
(7) JstankHo’s baggy pants. A poster last night said she was wearing MC Hammer pants.
(8) The Jennifer Holliday/Jessica Sanchez duet. At first I thought Holliday had oversized dentures that were about to fall out. Then I realized the facial ticks were just her way of “feeling” the song. A poster said it looked as though Jennifer was about to eat Jessica alive. Hilarious. The visual of her towering over Jessica with her mouth wide open reminded me of those tall creatures with protruding teeth in the “Alien” movie series.
(9) Randy, as he does on most Joshua and Jessica “feeling it” songs, standing and waving his hands like a little girl who just had fingernail polish applied and is trying to dry them.
(10) Fantasia.

I thought the Diana/Ace proposal was the most surprising moment of the night.
The BeeGees tribute needed more rehearsal time but, it’s understandable that they didn’t get more time.
The phone book song was great. They should allow the contestants to mock themselves and the judges more often.

It proves that American REALLY don’t know a good singer when they hear one. Don’t get me wrong, I like Philip Phillips, but he is in no way a good singer. I really can not just listen to his music for a long period of time. Out of the two, Jessica should have one. She will still have a recording contract anyway. Just like with Joshua Ledet, he is better off NOT having an American Idol contract (on the outside of the American Idol tour). I wish Philip Phillips well, but he is NOT a good singer at all!

When Steven Tyler made the comment ” You could be the next Springsteen”, that was it for me. You can easily see, if you want to, that Phillip is going to be a big time singer/songwriter/performer. Most of the other contestants are merely singers. There is a big difference in the two and time will show it.

OMFG! The “duet” between McScreamy and Fword was the biggest piece of total garbage I’ve ever seen on TV! The last 30 seconds of scream/screech/howling was just plain painful to the ears! And just proves to me at least that McScreamy is not much of a “singer”, just another “screamer”. Horrible.
Someone on pg 3 asked if Fword’s thighs had their own facebook page. Don’t know about that, but they sure deserve their own zip code. Why do people at that weight like to show off all that blubber. Chaka Khan was only a little better – she was a good bit slimmer and her costume was more covered, but still inappropriate for the age/weight. At least she actually sang (mostly).
I couldn’t watch all the duet between Jen and Jess – Jen was absolutely horrible, and as many above said, her facial expressions were scary. Her day in the spotlight should end NOW. Another painful on the ears experience – poor little Jessica.
I hate Reba M’s whangy/twangy voice, but the duet with Reba and Skylar just proved how much better Reba’s voice is and how much Skylar has to learn.
Did no one else notice McScreamy’s falling on his butt in one of the first group sings. His feet kept slipping and the girl behind him (maybe Hollie) had to give him a hand.
Now, to the good stuff. Way to go, Phillip – you proved in the last few weeks how good you can be. I wouldn’t have cried if Jessica had won, but didn’t realize how glad I’d be that you did! And the last song was very touching – I got teary when you couldn’t sing any more and went to your family. Hope you have a great career.
And Congrats to Diana and Ace. I believe she was totally surprised. His hand shook so much he could barely get the ring on her finger. Much happiness to you two.

My quick hits:
Chaka Khan: Did she even sing any of the lyrics? Or did she just go all screechy the entire song. Horrible wardrobe choice.
Man/Fan Duet: She’s Joshua’s most inspiring role model? In the words of Randy…. “whhhhAAAAAT??” Combined with the wardrobe (horrid) hair (double horrid) and vocals (triple horrid) it was the worst train wreck I’ve seen since that old black & white footage of two steam engines running into each other.
Neil Diamond medley: Those guys killed those songs… and not in a good way. Would like to say it was nice to see HeeJun again… but it wasn’t.
Jeremy Rosado: What was with the finger twitching on his mic hand?
Anyone notice during the Phillip/Fogerty duet that Phillip can’t sing quickly?
J-Lo: Please leave and take your lip-synced auto-tuned performances with you.
JessicaDid anyone else notice that Jessica pulled the microphone away from her lips – which had stopped moving – but the vocals continued for a second or two?
Jessica/Jennifer Duet I’m telling you I’m not going… to finish watching that performance. FF.
Colton probably wishes he played guitar about now.
Jimmie: It’s okay, Jimmie. Jessica is unforgettable.
Wait? Did I type Jessica?
Randy doesn’t just need new material. He needs a new wardrobe.
Ryan is a class act.

American Idol is NOT about the best singer! It is NOT a singing contest.
It’s about performing. It’s about charisma. It’s about taking whatever song gets thrown at you and making it entertaining. It’s about the audience falling in love with a contestant.
The audience fell in love with Kelly, Ruben AND Clay, Fantasia(although we’ve had some second thoughts on that one) Carrie, Taylor, Jordin, David AND David, Kris AND Adam, Lee(never understood that one), Scotty and now Phillip. It isn’t so much about the voice as it is about the person.

I believe Phillips music will be played on *94, B98, 99.
I don’t listen to the little local churchy/gospelly type of station that would play McScreamy’s music.
I just don’t know who would play Jessica’s music. She’s proved Pop is not her genre. Can anyone really believe that any black-oriented R&B type station would play a 16 year old Mex/Philippine gals music. Her music would not likely be played on the indie-music stations. I think she’s a good singer and will only get better with age and experience, but where in the world does she fit on the radio?

ok, I have heard enough…its fine if you do not like the way black people sing, but who are you to say it is not music??? Define music! I am very curious to hear your definition. First off, “And I am telling you” is a song from a play, and if you have ever been to broadway, songs from a musical are sang loudly…second, when she did the song in the play, she had just been told her boyfriend was leaving her, so it is a very emotional song. So, please let it go, that is our style, and if you dont like it fine, but dont be so critical

More quick hits:
Did Diana Degarmo get butt implants? If Mo’s friend Dean Martin was still around, he could set a high ball glass on that shelf and not spill a drop.
Joshua needs to concentrate on singing – not dancing.
Skylar could go on tour tomorrow – she’s that comfortable on the stage. Great duet with Reba – but bad wardrobe choice. Still, she had only the fifth widest hips of the evening.
Hollie looked and sounded great. Kept up with Jordin vocally.
Steven is weird and sleazy. Not a good combination. Horrible first song. Okay second song. Kinda wished Run DMC would come bustin’ out on the stage.
Bet Rodney is kinda wishing he had gone to Leesburg for Phillip’s homecoming.

dancer. while I agree in principle, Broadway does not work on TV BECAUSE it is too big for the camera. So Jennifer needed to tone it down a bit. JHud did the dong for the camera in the moive and it was big but it was also intimate because she worked with the camera to make the big parts believable and the smaller moments heartbreaking.
Jennifer Holliday is a wonderful Broadway performer but too big for tv.

I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time when reading Alex’s Wow moments (8:42am) on the classic show last night. And Rickster’s take was funny as Hell as well. I don’t usually “live blog” but when Fantasia came out with those thighs and that screaming, I had to turn on the computer and see what RoHo and the rest were saying to see if they were seeing what I was seeing or if it was just a nightmare. That duet with her and Joshua will go down in all time memories as the most horrible presentation of a duet in American Idol history, or any other singing presentation ever on TV.

Actually, I liked Reuben in Season 2. George Huff was my favorite in Season 3. And Melinda Doolittle was my favorite in Season 4.
I have been to a Tina Turner concert and LOVE her and her music.
I’ve seen Earth Wind & Fire “back in the day” and loved their music.
I went to see the Commodores and was a big fan.
I’m a huge fan of the Motown artists as well as the soul artists of the 60s and 70s.
The list can go on and on. But for the love of God, don’t equate Joshua, Fantasia or Jennifer as being the definitive version of the music of “black people”.

I won’t sit up here and lie by saying that I will never watch Idol again, because I’m dissappointed in the trend of recent winners. I’ll still watch with far less enthusiasm and different expectations.
However, there’s no need for me or anyone to vote if you have a favorite that’s not a WGWG or country singer. Idol mainstream has spoken loud and clear. I get the message, so I’ll just be an observer (like some of the blog regulars).

You were sure being nice to Josh and fantasia.. I thought somebody needed to shoot them to put them out of their misery it was a loud and obnoxious performance that wouldn’t stop, it was horrible and Fantasia’s dress made me want to turn away YUCK!!. Definetly the worst part of the show. Jennifer Holliday and Jessica was a very good vocal if you could focus on that through Jennifer Hollidays weird moves and scary faces.
