‘American Idol’ live blogging finale results show

As usual, expect lots of big names tonight and a Mantasia-Fantasia combo. No Miley Cyrus, though, for Hollie. But John Fogerty will join Phil Phillips! Note the show will not announce a winner until AFTER 10 p.m. DVRs are set for 10:07 p.m.

No. 1 album this week? Adam Lambert’s “Trespassing”! He sold 77,000 copies. Yesterday featured releases by Kris Allen and Haley Reinhart, certainly times to play off the “Idol” finale. Read a solid review of Haley’s album in the New York Times.

Since the performance show aired on a Tuesday night (to accommodate the end of the broadcast season tonight), ratings were down 14 percent from last week. The result : just 14.9 million viewers and a 4.4 18-49 rating. A year ago, it drew 20.6 million and a 6.4 rating. Season to date, “Idol” has lost about 23% of its total viewers and 28% of its 18-to-49 year olds vs. a year ago.

Tonight is our final live blog of the year. Thank you in advance for helping make this year a big success. Yes, even you, Pamela and your “jajajaja” one night. I’ll thank you all by name tomorrow. Regulars know I do an annual thank-you note on Thursdays. I’ll try to name drop as many regulars as possible!

It’s too bad that the numbers are down, but Idol can’t be #1 forever. Should be a good show as always tonight, but I don’t know if I’m looking forward more to the music and the cheese or to the fact that it is done for this year.

JT, I know, I’m kind of ready for it to be over. On to next year… and hopefully fairer voting and judges who actually judge. :-)

Hahaha! I was skimming over the comments from last night and I saw this from D:
“I loved Phil’s version of Movin’ Out but this is just gonna make Jenny angry ;-)

And it DID! I was fuming! LOL, y’all know me too well.

So ……. John Fogerty ? 93% of America will have no clue who he is. Or rather the AI viewers will have no clue. Think demographics please. Is that it for musical artists ? AI has so slipped.

The only truly successful AI winner has been Kelly Clarkson. And NO, Carrie Underwood is typecasted as C&W artist with no mainstream appeal. And NO, we are not counting awards, etc. as the benchmark. We are talking pure exposure media-wise, name recognition, musical culture awareness by the public. KC is far and away the most successful AI winner. It seems, sadly, that AI is declining in the American pop culture world, such that KC will forever be the most successful winner. Time will tell.

And then I laughed again because someone else in the live blog told Phillip to “stop screwing with a great Billy Joel song.”

I don’t know why Phil’s take on it made me so mad! Maybe it was his awful faces, or the fact that it’s such a good song on its own. I just wanted to throw something at the TV!

Haha, glad to hear those who “know” me were cracking up when they heard it.

And I loved it. I’m pretty sure I heard Billy Joel did, too.

And who hasn’t heard of John Fogerty?

Phillip has been consistently entertaining week after week, kidney pain or not, and his unique soulful voice is fine by me on anything he does. He definitely won the night last night, and I am SO hoping that our Georgia boy can bring home the win tonight! Can’t wait to buy his first cd and see him in concert.

‘American Idol’ Finale: John Fogerty, Neil Diamond, Reba McEntire, Fantasia-Mantasia Mash-Up to Close Out Season??

The tribute-heavy night will also feature appearances by Nelly Furtado, Jordin Sparks, Gloria Gaynor, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan and Kristin Chenoweth

you get lost, you can always be found
just know you’re not alone
I’m gonna make this place your home”.

The MAJORITY of AI viewers have no clue who Fogerty is. That is my point please. Viewers will be going to the fridge when he appears. Again, more importantly, anyone ELSE performing tonight ?

Atlanta Truth…the majority of American Idol viewers are between the ages of 21 to 59. I think most of them will at least heard of John Fogerty. Who do you think watches the show ? Tweens and senior citizens? Ok, I’m one of those and I know who John Fogerty is.

That info was off the John Fogerty web site actually, and I don’t know if it is accurate, but it’s on his site – so might not be around the general info lines somewhere. Should have mentioned that.

A former blogger found the info on the song Home, sang by Phillip, I just listened to it and wrote down what sounded like the last few lines – songwriter was Drew ??

@JTesla —– you miss the point ….. ask your average 14 yr old girl AI viewer “who is John Fogerty ?” answer: no clue. My point. Put on entertainers that viewers acknowledge. I’m not saying they have be current boy bands and Katy Perry and Bieber, etc. But don’t go to the 70’s on your finale show. OMG. Horrible.

Uuuuuuuugggghhh!! I was skimming some other blogs, looking at polls on who might win… and I ran across this lovely nugget:

Jessica’s coronation song is actually a Demi Lovato song.

No wonder it was so bad. (Though Jess sang it well.)

In other news, most polls I saw have Jessica quite far ahead of PP (as opposed to ours here.) So maybe there’s a tiny shred of hope that we have a year where the best singer finally wins again?

….nah. nevermind. ;-)

bracing myself to hear PP’s name announced.

American Idol is a formula: dragging out the ghosts of music past worked in prior season finale’s it will therefore work for this season finale. The target audience isn’t 14 year olds, they are going for the 18-49 demographic.

I’d also like to point out that there are 14 year old girls that listen to 60’s and 70’s music. Just because someone named Atlanta truth doesn’t know that it doesn’t follow that it isn’t true.

I always find it funny when people expect this blog to be a regurgitation of other information from around the web. When Rodney doesn’t regurgitate the right information at the right time he will also be criticized for not providing original content. He can’t win.

Atlanta truth

The target audience IS falling…. per the NYT: “Idol” scored a 4.2 rating in the money category on Tuesday night, viewers ages 18 to 49. That was down 14 percent from the performance show one week ago, a drop that happens to be in line with what was seen last year. That indicates that more people seem interested when it is three contestants than when it gets down to the final two.

But it was the worst number ever for an “Idol” final performance show. A year ago on the same night, “Idol” averaged a 6.4 rating in the 18 to 49 category, which means it is off 34 percent this year .

If you look at the full list of performers there are current artists, and artists that are past their prime. The show tonight is set to appeal to the broadest range of fans. Why someone has a problem with that is beyond me.

I also think the large drop in audience last night had more to do with Idol changing the day to Tuesday. Many people I talked to today forgot that it was on last night.

I need to relax? I’m not the one pitching a fit over one guest performance… while ignoring the other guest performers that appeal to the target audience I’m advocating in favor of.

Is there a reason why you are ignoring part of the audience? Ignoring part while also ignoring some of the guest performers?

The numbers may have been down because there were a lot of regular viewers, such as me, that did not know it was on last night. I had got on line to check out Rodney’s thoughts and saw the Live Blog was going. I thought I had lost a day!

Or have I poked too many people on here. :-) Sorry. I just love AI and remember the first show way back when there were TWO hosts. My son coaches a team of 14 year old girls. They don’t watch the show…neither does he(he’s 27) and he’s the one who got me to watch it during the first season. None of the 17 girls on his team watch the show. And they swear that their friends don’t watch it either. Small sample, I agree but one that I believe is representative. One girl said her parents watch it all the time but she stopped watching it around the time that she was 10.

Many blogs are not only for Jessica, but once again are just brutal/vicious against Phillip and his fans. I am really tired of this WGWG reference. Phillip is very different from previous winners from what I have observed. I was shocked when Kris won over Adam, however Jessica is no Adam Lambert and Phillip has a lot more style/stage presence than Kris.
