Tia Mowry Tweeted today that she is leaving BET’s “The Game” after five seasons, two with BET.
“Just wanted to let all my fans know that I will not be returning to The Game for season 6. It was an incredible run and I had lots of fun along the way. I am looking forward to my upcoming projects…the release of my book #OhBaby [today!], season 2 of @TiaTameraShow on @mystyle premiering in June, and my @ABCFamily movie coming out in December…more to come!” love u so much”
Mowry, 33, was the biggest name on the show, which was axed by the CW in 2009 but resurrected 18 months later by BET to a whopping 7.7 million viewers. Those numbers have dropped steadily since then. The most recent episode this past Tuesday drew a mere 2.08 million, about half of the average audience in 2011.
“The Game” is shot in Atlanta. It was recently renewed for a sixth season and 22 episodes. The current season ends June 5.
How they are planning to write off her character Melanie Barnett-Davis is unclear. Pooch Hall, who plays her husband Derwin Davis, appears to be out, too.

Pooch Hall is the actor. Derwin Davis is the character.

I think the writers have pushed “Melanie and Derwin” as far as they could. It is sad that the writers could not move them into a a more normal married situation. This show started off as a comedy that wasn’t a comedy. All of the characters had “real” issues and the audience laughed along with the laugh track. I think many fans were upset last year when the topics covered centered on real problems and not just the “fly” life of the rich, money to burn characters. It may go on for another season but it really needs some characters in stable relationships.

I think the writing changed once it began to be filmed in Atlanta. Just did not seem as “authentic” as before; without the characters “Melanie and Derwin” the show will not make much sense. Originally this was the spin-off and everything is centered around this couple so I think this will be the last season.
