Before tonight, I thought Phillip Phillips had a practical lock on the finals.

But after tonight, I’m not so sure. His vocal limitations, which he had hidden so well to date with growls, came through big time during “Time of the Season.”

Good news for Hollie Cavanagh fans. She is lifting her game just as the competition gets truly heated and should survive. And while Joshua Ledet was solid, Jennifer Lopez took hyperbole to great heights by saying he was the best singer of the past half century.

Who may go home? Despite Phillip’s way off night, he may not have fallen far enough to get eliminated. I think he did so poorly, his fan base will vote extra to save him. Hollie hit a home run so her fans will load up on votes. I think Joshua pleased his fans, too, and should live on to the top four.

So that leaves the Skylar Laine and Jessica Sanchez. Skylar had a good night, not great. So that could keep her fans from voting with enough fervor. Jessica is in a similar boat. Her second song was so sleepy, it might lull her followers to sleep. I predict Skylar goes home by a hair over Jessica. It’s going to be close.

Stevie Van Zandt was a fun guest mentor, joshing a lot with his buddy Jimmy Iovine.

Who should go home Thursday night?

First up: the 1960s theme

Hollie (”River Deep, Mountain High” Ike & Tina Turner) – As Van Zandt noted, she opted for a song with an extremely high degree of difficulty. While this wasn’t close to Tina Turner quality (and she missed a few notes here and there), it was a confident show of her vocals and steadily improving stage presence. She hits her big final note, too. Grade: A-minus

Phillip (”The Letter” The Box Tops) – He virtually obliterated the melody and turned it into a bluesy Phil Phillipsy feel. While I absolutely adore the original, he changed this one so much, I kept comparing them. But once I let that go, I realized this was vintage Phil and enjoyed it, especially on a second listen. Grade: B-plus

Skylar (”Fortunate Son” CCR) – I remember this being an angry song and her take felt too upbeat for the lyrics. Her stage presence is without peer among the remaining five. He is just having fun as she turns this into rabble rouser. I liked it but didn’t love it. Grade: B-plus

Phillip and Joshua (”You’ve Lost Your Lovin’ Feelin’ – Righteous Brothers) – Phillip was out of his element so he took it as a goof. They both smiled through what is theoretically a sad song. The harmonies were better than you’d expect given how different the two vocal styles are. Joshua really dialed it back to adjust to Phillip. Grade: B-minus

Jessica (”Proud Mary” CCR) – I love that Steven Van Zandt tried to talk her out of this song because he has heard it so much in bars and is kind of sick of it. He even had the opening changed up for her. Her way-too-tight outfit distracted me but I give her points (like Hollie) for picking an insanely difficult song. And she admitted she’s not great moving around on stage but tried it anyway in high heels. Again, props to that. I actually liked it more than many of the live bloggers. Grade: A-minus

Joshua (”Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” Temptations) – Steven Van Zandt loves him to pieces. He dominates this “Big Chill” classic in his vintage gospelized style, which means dialing it up a bit more than the original. Sometimes, he grates that way but this version worked fine. Grade: A-minus

Second thematics: songs by Brits

Hollie (”Bleeding Love” Leona Lewis) – This ubiquitous radio hit from 2007-08 worried me because I wondered if an 18 year old like her could tap into the pain in this song. But lo and behold, she does. She never over-emotes, dialing it back but carrying just enough of the weight to make it work and work well. This is my favorite performance of the night. Grade: A

Phillip (”Time of the Season” The Zombies) – It opened okay. He handled the verses fine. But when he hit the chorus and chose to actually just sing the melodies and not growl the higher notes, and I felt pain – his pain. He struggled to give that upper register any power. It just came off as anemic. This was his weakest performance of the season and he can’t afford for that to happen again if he wants to make the finals. Grade: C

Jessica, Skylar, Hollie (”Higher” Jackie Wilson) – This gave us a chance to contrast the three female vocalists and the teens all have strong voices, just very different styles. Jessica has the huskiest voice. Hollie had the most angelic voice. Skylar brought the most grit. The judges deemed the arrangement strange but I don’t know what was so strange about it. Grade: A-minus

Skylar (”You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” Dusty Springfield) – A perfectly viable version of this classic. She didn’t do anything. I merely liked it okay, though. Maybe the textures in her voice for this type of song didn’t quite touch me the way the original did. Grade: B-plus

Jessica (”You are So Beautiful” Joe Cocker) – Now why didn’t Phil sing this? He would have killed! But he would have been criticized as he was last year for aping someone so similar to him. So Jessica went against type. Technically, she hit this one perfectly. The problem: the arrangement was elevator-music worthy and she never really connected with the song. I felt like she wasn’t singing this to anyone in particular. It was pretty but pretty empty. Grade: B

Joshua (”To Love Somebody” Bee Gees) – I tend to prefer him when he isn’t caterwauling. So the first half of this is spot on. Once he goes into high octane mode, it becomes a matter of taste. You either buy into it or don’t. I sometimes do. I sometimes don’t. This was just okay for me this time to go full Joshua. The haters will hate him even more, though, because the judges were way over the top in their praise. Grade: B-plus/A-minus

Jenny, thanks for your review of what I missed!
Sam-A, at 3:51 – more info, please. Europe is a continent, not a country!

Michael Slezak has fallen under the Hollie spell:
“‘River Deep, Mountain high” was a study in sublime power vocals. without any unneccessary embellishments. I menam if you’ve got a high-quality, perfectly cooked filet mignon, are you really going to muck it up with horseradish, or ketchup or blue cheese? Similarly, Hollie held back on the melisma and the vibrato and the riffing, delivering a classic melody with heart and soul, while strutting around like the Pied Piperas her backup singers and brass secrion trailed along, trabsfixed. The ‘I love you baby’ breakdown was one of my favorite musical moments of the season, and you can’t really argue with a little flirting interplay with the bongo drummer. Scary opening performance slot be damned, the Liverpool lass might last another week in the competition.”

I can probably agree with you guys on PP in a dive bar. Atlanta has many bars full of PPs that I would probably enjoy. Besides, I would be too drunk to care if he could really sing or not.

Exactly, G. So many dive bars and coffeehouses all over the country… with many, many PPs and Kris Allens to watch.

In about 4 hours, all the speculation will be moot and we’ll know who goes home tonight.

I’m hoping it’s Phillip. I wonder if Joshua may suffer from a apathy/antipathy backlash where his fans won’t vote ’cause they think there’s no way the best singer in the last 50 years could go home and other singers’ fans flood the lines to protest the effusive and unadulterated praise Joshua received.

I’m just looking forward to the final show.

‘night everyone!

Ok, got curious after Jenny’s opinion on the Idols I missed so I checked out the perfs. on the website.
Boy, was that an awkward “get your hands off me!” reaction from Joshua on the duet… Jessica’s “Mary” was a sad spectacle, imo, her dress looked like it was painted on and it did NOT make her look “grown up” (JLo), it made her look like a child for sale… Phillip’s “Letter” was a hint of bad PP things to come…not at all the song I remember! Skylar was her usual, stompy self. Don’t care for her voice that much but she’s fun to watch.

Since I seem to be in a googling mood: looked up World idol so for you, Sam-A:

The contestants came from four countries where English is the main language: USA, Canada, Britain and Australia.

Oh, and Joshua could well suffer some backlash from those over the top comments from the judges, as may have been the case when Jessica was voted off.

The best talent went home last week: Elise. So much potential with a flexible voice and likable persona. Next for me is Phillip, but he did not shine last night. Hope he is safe and needs to make it up next week. Therefore…my attention has gone to Hollie. She really stepped it up and could be a big talent as she grows in age and skill. Jessica, pls go home as you are annoying. Joshua is great and could bring R&B back (agree with Randy…). Skylar is good, but not a C&W fan…sounds like a young Reba. It will be interesting to see how they rank tonight.

Wait, an American took second in an “European contest” (ignoring that it was broadcast worldwide)? Beating out singers from Belgium, United Kingdom, Poland (where it seems to have been very popular), Germany (lots o’ people), and the Netherlands.

I guess World Idol was before my “Idol” time, interesting concept and execution. I do like how it was broadcast worldwide.

Sorry, got distracted, more about World Idol: one contestant from Lebanon, another from South Africa. Rest from the following European countries: the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Norway, Belgium: all countries with their own distinct language. So no “area” there.

If you follow dialidol.com, Philip is a goner tonight as he is so far below everyone else he has no shot. To be honest, based on comments from the family, he’s been in such pain, he’s barely able to walk right now, that’s why his songs have been less “active” than normal (he has kidney stones that have to be surgically removed once he’s off the show). Anyone complaining about his song choices need to understand he’s been picking them with that handicap.

Dial Idol is wrong more than right – but they did show Colton last when he was eliminated, and now PP is last.

It’s interesting to see how more and more people are now suddenly recognizing Hollie as more than just a tag-along in the competition. Those who bothered to look-up her videos and performances pre-idol and in-between last year and this year – knew that she had some goods to deliver.

With going down to 5, and Elise gone, and doing 2 songs plus a trio — suddenly Hollie became more visible and her talent was better displayed. At 18, she has a lot of room to grow in the business if she pursues it, and doesn’t get sidetracked into other things.

The oddsmakers still show Hollie as the most likely elimination tonite – but that was a pre-performance line – so things may change.

Whoever is eliminated, there will be many rants at this point.

Last year when Durbin went-out at 4th, I had predicted his elimination and explained why he would go – on another blog site, not this one. A lady on that blog figured I must be the one of those who helped get him eliminated, and went on a 12 post rant directed at me, and how stupid Americans are—– guess she thought I should give metal a chance:)
