Hollie Cavanagh lifted her game during the top 5 performance show. CREDIT: Michael Becker/ FOX
Before tonight, I thought Phillip Phillips had a practical lock on the finals.
But after tonight, I’m not so sure. His vocal limitations, which he had hidden so well to date with growls, came through big time during “Time of the Season.”
Good news for Hollie Cavanagh fans. She is lifting her game just as the competition gets truly heated and should survive. And while Joshua Ledet was solid, Jennifer Lopez took hyperbole to great heights by saying he was the best singer of the past half century.
Who may go home? Despite Phillip’s way off night, he may not have fallen far enough to get eliminated. I think he did so poorly, his fan base will vote extra to save him. Hollie hit a home run so her fans will load up on votes. I think Joshua pleased his fans, too, and should live on to the top four.
So that leaves the Skylar Laine and Jessica Sanchez. Skylar had a good night, not great. So that could keep her fans from voting with enough fervor. Jessica is in a similar boat. Her second song was so sleepy, it might lull her followers to sleep. I predict Skylar goes home by a hair over Jessica. It’s going to be close.
Stevie Van Zandt was a fun guest mentor, joshing a lot with his buddy Jimmy Iovine.
First up: the 1960s theme
Hollie (”River Deep, Mountain High” Ike & Tina Turner) – As Van Zandt noted, she opted for a song with an extremely high degree of difficulty. While this wasn’t close to Tina Turner quality (and she missed a few notes here and there), it was a confident show of her vocals and steadily improving stage presence. She hits her big final note, too. Grade: A-minus
Phillip (”The Letter” The Box Tops) – He virtually obliterated the melody and turned it into a bluesy Phil Phillipsy feel. While I absolutely adore the original, he changed this one so much, I kept comparing them. But once I let that go, I realized this was vintage Phil and enjoyed it, especially on a second listen. Grade: B-plus
Skylar (”Fortunate Son” CCR) – I remember this being an angry song and her take felt too upbeat for the lyrics. Her stage presence is without peer among the remaining five. He is just having fun as she turns this into rabble rouser. I liked it but didn’t love it. Grade: B-plus
Phillip and Joshua (”You’ve Lost Your Lovin’ Feelin’ – Righteous Brothers) – Phillip was out of his element so he took it as a goof. They both smiled through what is theoretically a sad song. The harmonies were better than you’d expect given how different the two vocal styles are. Joshua really dialed it back to adjust to Phillip. Grade: B-minus
Jessica (”Proud Mary” CCR) – I love that Steven Van Zandt tried to talk her out of this song because he has heard it so much in bars and is kind of sick of it. He even had the opening changed up for her. Her way-too-tight outfit distracted me but I give her points (like Hollie) for picking an insanely difficult song. And she admitted she’s not great moving around on stage but tried it anyway in high heels. Again, props to that. I actually liked it more than many of the live bloggers. Grade: A-minus
Joshua (”Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” Temptations) – Steven Van Zandt loves him to pieces. He dominates this “Big Chill” classic in his vintage gospelized style, which means dialing it up a bit more than the original. Sometimes, he grates that way but this version worked fine. Grade: A-minus
Second thematics: songs by Brits
Hollie (”Bleeding Love” Leona Lewis) – This ubiquitous radio hit from 2007-08 worried me because I wondered if an 18 year old like her could tap into the pain in this song. But lo and behold, she does. She never over-emotes, dialing it back but carrying just enough of the weight to make it work and work well. This is my favorite performance of the night. Grade: A
Phillip (”Time of the Season” The Zombies) – It opened okay. He handled the verses fine. But when he hit the chorus and chose to actually just sing the melodies and not growl the higher notes, and I felt pain – his pain. He struggled to give that upper register any power. It just came off as anemic. This was his weakest performance of the season and he can’t afford for that to happen again if he wants to make the finals. Grade: C
Jessica, Skylar, Hollie (”Higher” Jackie Wilson) – This gave us a chance to contrast the three female vocalists and the teens all have strong voices, just very different styles. Jessica has the huskiest voice. Hollie had the most angelic voice. Skylar brought the most grit. The judges deemed the arrangement strange but I don’t know what was so strange about it. Grade: A-minus
Skylar (”You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” Dusty Springfield) – A perfectly viable version of this classic. She didn’t do anything. I merely liked it okay, though. Maybe the textures in her voice for this type of song didn’t quite touch me the way the original did. Grade: B-plus
Jessica (”You are So Beautiful” Joe Cocker) – Now why didn’t Phil sing this? He would have killed! But he would have been criticized as he was last year for aping someone so similar to him. So Jessica went against type. Technically, she hit this one perfectly. The problem: the arrangement was elevator-music worthy and she never really connected with the song. I felt like she wasn’t singing this to anyone in particular. It was pretty but pretty empty. Grade: B
Joshua (”To Love Somebody” Bee Gees) – I tend to prefer him when he isn’t caterwauling. So the first half of this is spot on. Once he goes into high octane mode, it becomes a matter of taste. You either buy into it or don’t. I sometimes do. I sometimes don’t. This was just okay for me this time to go full Joshua. The haters will hate him even more, though, because the judges were way over the top in their praise. Grade: B-plus/A-minus

Does anyone else think Jessica dresses way too maturely for a 16 year old? Some of her looks border on inappropriate. She looks like a baby hooker.

Sorry, I know that Jessica sang You Are So Beautiful…..brain-fart. Love the Dusty Springfield song so it was in my mind.
My friend, who has never seen the the show this season, picked Jessica as the best and Phil as the worst.

Joshua is my favorite BUT….the guy really needs to work on his personality. He has such an aloof type presence. Maybe he’s received to many standing “o’s” or perhaps his childhood wasn’t filled with enough reasons to laugh and smile…but one thing for certain, he does have a good voice.

Hey JT. I agree with your post early this morning. I finally understand Joshua. He sang both songs so well, Heck, I actually voted for him for the first time. He really stood out. As for Phil2, he should easily be in the bottom 3 tonight. I think that Jessica will be going home tonight, or even Phil.

If you really want to see how “To Love Somebody” should be sung by a non-BeeGee, then look at Clay Aiken’s performance in Season 2 rather than Screamin’ Joshua. Even Robin Gibb was blown away by Clay’s performance.

RoHo, you are soooo correct. Now I hate Joshua more than ever, and I couldn’t have believed that possible before he took a sledge hammer to the beautiful BeeGees song! After the first monstrosity, I turned as soon as he started the second one, but sadly for me, flipped back just in time for all that silly screaming at the end. JUST TERRIBLE, at least for my household. We hated it fiercely. When I got to work I told my little Thurs morn “discuss” group that I thought it was even worse than anything the Fword ever did, and some agreed, a couple said “I don’t know – she was really really bad”.
Hollie killed it completely – and I can’t stand that “bleeding” song.
Jessica was great on second song, but Randy was right about “Proud Mary” – not good. If she wasn’t “pitchy” I don’t know what would classify.
Disappointed in Px2, especially “The Letter”, but still find his stage presence great. Someone (new) above said he “glowed” (sic) onstage, and I agree – he’s got it. Just needs to sing a bit better.
Skylar – Agree with RoHo about being to upbeat on the first song. And her cornpone was sooo thick I couldn’t understand have the words, sadly because those words are so meaningful. She was slightly better on the Dusty song. I guess Joshua was so irritating last night, I didn’t dislike Skylar as much as usual.
Wishin, and Hopin, and Thinking, and Praying that Joshua will go home tonight!
Now to read above comments completely.

My rankings
Hollie: First song was good. Second song was better. She’s making a strong, bold bid to get to the finals.
Skylar: Works the stage like no one I’ve seen the past few seasons. Both performances were at least good. Strong vocals – even stronger stage presence. Not a good hairstyle.
Jessica: First song was horrific. Second song was stellar. Didn’t care for the Michelle Pfieffer (Fabulous Baker Boys) torch-singer lounging with candles motif.
Joshua: First song was decent-to-good. Second song was great until he hit the high notes.
Phillip: First song was sub-par (which is good only in golf.) The second song was horrificer than Jessica’s “Proud Mary”.
I knew that Phillip was limited vocally…. But this showed his limitations in a way that even the most ardent fan would have to think “I really want to vote for this guy?”
Dos Hombres (Joshua & Phillip Duet: I actually liked the version from “Top Gun” better than this. At least Tom Cruise & Anthony Edwards knew they couldn’t sing but decided to have fun with it anyway. Somewhere, Simon is cringing/crying to what they did to one of his favorite songs.
The Three Amigas: (Hollie, Jessica & Skylar): No one wowed me… no one made me cringe. This just proves that they’ve got to cut the performance show to 60 minutes – 90 tops.
I think that the judges are living proof of the concept of Osmosis. Similar to how winds move from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure – there is still such a high concentration of prescription and/or illegal pharmaceuticals in Steven’s body that they’re moving over into J-Lo & Randy and destroying their ability for rational thought and judgement.
There’s no other explanation for their declarations that Joshua is either one of the “best idols ever” (Randy) or the “greatest singer of the last 50 years” J-Lo.

Best singer of the half century? Joshua’s probably not the best singer in the competition! The ONLY “Idol” that could even possibly challenge for consideration as the best singer in 50 years (to paraphrase Lopez), would be Kurt Nilsen…the only World Idol [they killed the global competition after he destroyed Kelly Clarkson]—and I doubt most Americans, let alone Lopez, has even heard of him. He’s on a different level than ANY Idol that’s come along!

@Roho and other PP fans. I’m not going to tell you I told you so about this kid was faking on the vocals the entire time. I knew why he manufactured a growl all the time. All it took was the right moment and the right song to expose him. Then BAM!!! “Time of the Season”. LOL!!! At the very least he SHOULD not only be in the bottom 3, but he needs to go home. He’s taking up a valuable spot that would be better served by Colton or Elise. JMO

Best – Hollie
Worst – Jessica (soooo boring, and I’m sick of the judges propping her up)
I like Phil, he had a bad night and I think his health combined with their insane schedule is wearing him down.
Josh – Tired of it always being turned into a gospel church moment
Skyler – she’s good, but she’s no Carrie. They country vote is keeping her in it.

As the producers have told us frequently, the pimp spot is not randomly selected. They try to put a different person last each week but the choice often depends on who is singing what and who can close the show the best. The first place singer is also chosen that way.
And yes, sometimes the best singer gets the pimp spot more often that the others because…..why? It’s a TV SHOW and they want it to continue to make money.

I can’t speak for others, but I never thought Phil had strong vocals. Instead, he was entertaining – you didn’t know what arrangement to expect. Some I liked, some I didn’t, but I always had anticipation when it was time for him to perform.
While “Time of the Season” exposed his weak higher register (and I said so last night), the duet with Joshua was painful to watch and listen.

I have a theory. A few weeks ago when Jessica was voted off and then saved. The personal video before her performance reviled that she was filipino and not hispanic. As a result I think she lost the hispanic vote that night and in turn got voted off.
Here die hard fans have been working extra hard to keep her in it.

We get so invested in our favorite singer that frequently we fail to understand how the show works. Good singers make the show popular. Bad singers make the show popular. The judges being controversial makes the show popular.
If everyone had the same opinion about a singer, the show would be boring! The LAST thing the show wants is to be boring! For the judges and the producers it isn’t about the singers, it’s about the show!
It’s like watching a horse race…it’s exciting when two horses are neck and neck…even if you didn’t bet on either one of them.

Jessica Sanchez has become the Lebron James of AI, she is clearly the most talented singer in the competition and one of the best to ever perform. Yet being a prodigy, she is only 16, she makes the difficult look easy and people want to find what is wrong instead of enjoying witnessing greatness.
I completely understand because I do not want to see Lebron win the championship although I have to admit he is the best player in the NBA right now.

Morning All……..
Hollie was by far the better of the females and Joshua overtook PP last night. Jessica was not good on Proud Mary, but fairly well on her 2nd song. Skylar was fair on her 1st song, but much better on the second. Phillip was just plain bad on all 3 of his performances. I usually like him, but last night was the pits, and I still can’t get use to his facial expressions. He looks like it pains him to sing. His duet with Joshua showed just how bad he was and that he didn’t want to sing (1)either that song (2)or with Josh, and he has NO stage presence. He reminds me of a wooden puppet. If he’s ready to leave then leave he should if America voted correctly.

Thog: The World Idol contest was in Kurts backyard. Had it been in N America, results would have been totally different. And he didn’t exactly “destroy” Kelly – they said it was very close. The world is your playground when you’re in your home area!
Alex: Agree with much of your opinions, especially at 8:52. That is in no way “singing” – even babies can scream their heads off. For me that was the worst I’ve ever heard on Idol, and I’ve never missed a show, including 3rd season with the Fword screeching and howling (with a thick-tongued lisp) everything she “sang”.

No excuses for Phil. He tanked on the duet with Elise because she was a singer. And he tanked on the duet with Joshua because Joshua is a singer. Phil is a stylist and not a singer. He only does well when he prowls and growls through his self-interpreted songs. He cannot sing. IMHO.

What I’ve sensed from the judges towards Joshua is what I’ll call the “Halleluiah” effect. You know what I’m talking about. A choir starts singing “Halleluiah” and the whole congregation stands. Nobody knows why you stand as soon as the song starts, but you do stand. It’s not as though the choir is singing the best rendition of “Halleluiah” you ever heard, it’s just that the song is being sung therefore you stand. It’s not as though “Halleluiah” is the best religious song ever, it’s….it’s almost a reflex. The choir sings the first two words and everyone’s standing with no real reason why. Last night will NOT be the final “Halleluiah” moment from the judges, unless, of course, Screamin’ J goes home and that would be fine with me.
The “Halleluiah Effect” – a strange thing to behold.

You poor lost soul, (shaking head)
I gather you never heard the saying better to not open your mouth and be assumed an idoit than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
Your post at 12:32 wins the Award for the DUMBEST comment posted on American Idol’s blog. I mean really. Re-Read your post and see how Dumb it is.
Its obvious you are clueless so I will fill you in about President, yes I said President Obama. Regardless whether you like it or not he is the President.
President Obama is the President because the Majority(Whites) voted for him. Not Blacks(Minority) since we Only make up 13% roughly 38 million of the total population in the US which is a little over 300million. All 38million blacks DID NOT VOTE FOR OBAMA and even if they did would NOT have been enough for him to Win. President Obama is the president thanks to the white people who belived and still believe in him.
When Fantasia and Ruben won it was the whites that voted them to the No.1 spot, Not the blacks because clearly by numbers whites out number blacks in the USA. (google Total Populaton, blacks, whites, hispanic, other). With that said its really DUMB to say Blacks came out and voted in a black president not taking in account that many blacks Cant vote because they are in prison, mental issues, too old, too young. now Subtract all of those issues I mentioned from 38million and see how many actual Votes you have by blacks. Not many.
So again because since its obvious your brain is asleep, the Black vote does NOT change anything unless its also backed by White votes.
No one is making those judges stand and give Joshua a standing ovation. They stand because the want to. Its that Plain and simple. If Joshua wins which would Shock the hell out of me(Judging from some of the posts on here he dont stand a chance in hell) but if he does win, it will Have Nothing to do with how many blacks voted. It will be the White votes because Most of the blacks I talk to Quit watching Idol years ago..so please get over yourself about blacks voting and Leave Obama out of this. This is about SINGING Hello..not about who is in the White house duhhh..different Blog.
Joshua, does NOT need to win. He will be fine, just as Jennifer hudson, and others that did not win. There is one thing I see he’s struggling with his identity. Once he let’s loose and actually be Himself..Like he did towards the end of To Love Somebody(minus the screaming) but the high notes..he was in control. He was clearly embarrassed when Philli hugged him and I can understand why since clearly its gotton back to him that many believe hes gay

Alex, I’m not talking about popularity with picking a closer, I’m talking about showmanship…you have to end a show with a bang not a whimper.
Whether you liked it or not is a matter of personal taste. Joshua has been in the pimp spot once before last night. They try to give everyone a chance in that position. Because he was in it last night, he won’t be there next week. After that, with only 3 contestants, he has about a 33% chance of being in the pimp spot the following week.
Conspiracy theories aside….Joshua ended the show with a bang last night and whether you liked it or not is irrelevant(and by “you” I mean the audience not you specifically)

Why do so many people always act so mad when others like a particular singer? If people would spend more time hyping what they like in life and less time tearing down the “opposition” then perhaps things would be more productive overall. Tearing down Joshua (I don’t even know who he is because I don’t watch AI much and only hear it on the TV when my wife watches) isn’t very productive.

Sam Cooke (acould arguably be THE best soul voice)
Marvin Gaye
Levi Stubbs of The Four Tops
David Ruffin of The Temptations
Otis Redding
Arthur Conley (”Sweet Soul Music” is one of the all time greats)
Aretha Franklin
Mahalia Jackson
Wilson Pickett
ad infinitum

I don’t know if some of you notice, but Jimmy and his guest mentors throughout the season always talk about Joshua and Jessica in terms of recording after the show, in a round about way. To PP’s credit, I’ve heard Jimmy say he would love to hear some of his originals. But week after week, Jimmy and guest mentors oogle over the “possibities” of doing work with Jess and Josh. FACT.
