‘Idol’ fans: talk amongst yourselves

AMERICAN IDOL: Elise Testone (L) is eliminated on AMERICAN IDOL airing Thursday, April 26, (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Also Pictured: Ryan Seacrest. CR: Michael Becker / FOX.

I’m off Monday and Tuesday. Feel free to use this space to talk about “Idol” stuff until I’m back Tuesday evening from the West Coast.

Deirdre will surely be your guide and your confidante on breaking news.

Although I completely botched my prediction last week, I did have Elise Testone on the bottom of my Power 6 last week. The week before, I had Colton Dixon at the top.

At this point, we know each singer’s strengths and weaknesses. Will someone do something as gutsy as Bo Bice did during the top 3 show and sing a capella on a song hardly anybody knew? Will someone screech their way out like Danny Gokey on that Aerosmith song?

My power 5

1. Phillip Phillips. Although he was just okay last week and picked a Dave Matthews Band song that only big Dave Matthews Band fans would have embraced, he remains the only contestant who has never been in the top three. Colton’s absence appears to have helped him. These two factors should help him get to the finals and a possible victory the way things are going. (last week – 1)

2. Jessica Sanchez. Despite her low vote count, now three weeks in the past, she has remained safe the past two weeks. Her fan base will likely not be so complacent again. I’m just not clear if Hollie leaves next, will that help Jessica? (last week 2)

3. Joshua Ledet. Last year, Jacob Lusk finished fifth. I did a poll on the live blog and the fans were split between him and Jacob. I generally prefer Joshua though his full throttle style doesn’t always move me. Still, he has only been in the bottom three once and he is beloved by the judges. (last week 4)

4. Skylar Laine. I am a big fan of hers but the fact she landed a second time in the bottom three last week indicates some weakness in support despite a good week. I’m a big country music fan and I appreciate her Reba-esque style. (last week 3)

5. Hollie Cavanagh. I think she also had a very good week last week and being in the pimp spot, I think, saved her. I’m not sure what she can do to get past the other four at this stage, since she’s been in the bottom three four times now. She has improved over the weeks and is singing with more emotion but she seems to have gotten as far as she could. (last week 5)

- Before I left, I did see Ryan Seacrest signed a deal with NBC which will. Though he will still host red carpet events, he will no host E! News daily, and stopped doing it when “Idol” started in January anyway. Besides doing work at the Olympics, as previously announced, he will be a special correspondent for the “Today” show and provide content for prime-time, too, though the network wasn’t too specific. Interestingly, this means he will now be active on Fox (”American Idol”), ABC (”Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve”) and NBC.

Boy… even Rodney’s on the anti-Hollie bandwagon. She’s the only one that didn’t get her name in bold font.

I agree with Rodney’s rankings, although Joshua and Skylar could be interchanged. I personally like Hollie better than Joshua and Skylar, but she needs to really step it up to get out of the dawg house.

Ryan Seacrest is a Sith Lord. Slowly consolidating power, until it is too late. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has an army of clones built up somewhere.

4. Phillip

I think a Joshua/Jessica finale is the most possible at the moment. Next to Skylar, I would bet that Joshua is getting the most votes from the south.

I think Phil will go either in 3rd or 4th place. He is too polarizing to win, as is Skylar.

JTesla

I wish it would be that way Deirdre, I want anyone but Phillip. It’s not because I don’t like him it’s just because I’m tired of the WGWG. However, my hopes are not realistic, he is virtually bulletproof right now. The polarization is hindering the others, therefore it isn’t as much a drain against him.

I hope Hollie or Phillipx2 wins. 3rd to Jessica. The booby-prize twins, don’t care a thing about. Just want them Gone!

I’ m not usually feeling like this at this point, but I just want Idol to go away now for a few months. The dreckers have lasted way too long, and I’m actually sick and tired of watching this stuff for awhile.

Good news Sam-A, they have a new invention that is all the rage these days: it’s an “Off” button. You can press it on your television or remote and then you don’t have to watch. ;)

I usually hit a point where I’m tired of Idol, but when I reach that point I start fast forwarding and skipping more and more.

Too bad RoHo is not here; I’d like to know what he means when writes of Philip “He remains the only contestant who has never been in the top three”.

Remember the week when Hollie, Phil, and Colton were in group (THE WINNING one) and Jessica, Elise and Joshua in another? Skylar was asked to “huff” and refused.

Hollie and Phil were among the Top Four that week, and may even have been among the Top Three. Secretive “Idol” likes to hide important numbers.

Jenny

I would be fine with a Joshua/Jessica finale. That would actually be an interesting show! Please, please, please don’t let it be the snoozefest of Phil/Skylar….

Highlander, on your Saturday evening post, as usual I agree with you completely. And I love the names you gave the guys. :-)

Sam-A, I love Maggie May so I don’t know about Phil doing it… I’m still traumatized from when Paul MacDonald “sang” it last year. (And I use “sang” loosely.) If Phil were to ruin it Movin’ Out style, that might be really upsetting.

JT, what’s the sacred cow from the end of the last blog?

Would really like to see Idol have a strong vocalist win, just like the good ole days of Kelly, Ruben, and Carrie.

Speaking of which Carrie was on the Elvis Duran Morning Show today. Things that got my attention: She’s a Victoria Secret girl, considers herself country (not pop country), and she’s absolutely hates auto-tune. Sorry T-Pain & Kanye, there will be no collabs with Carrie for you. LOL!!!!

And as far as the dreckers lasting way too long, and making you tired of the show… yup. I was right there with you last week. For some reason I’m feeling a little better this week, but if Phillip and Skylar both stay AGAIN, I’ll probably lose hope again.

I forgot to make a point of clarification of what I meant by “strong vocalist like the good ole days”. Some people on this board make think PP is in my list of a strong vocalist. He’s not. PP is one of the many things wrong with Idol nowadays.

Yeah Jenny, I would absolutely love to see a Jess and Josh finale. The duets alone would be awsome! It’s possible to see, but highly unlikely. Unfortunately, the WGWG trend is just too strong. If PP wins, it will be sound proof that you can stick any old WGWG in the mix and he will win. Not a good sign.

The worst things about Idol this year are, in order, Joshua, ST, JLo, & Skyler. Put ‘em all in a barrel and push them over Niagara Falls/ They’d be in close enough proximity that JL and ST could kiss the butts of the two “singers” for the whole ride.

True, JT, there is that “off” button, but still hoping for some miracle that will rid the show of the Jesus screamer and the floor stomping whiner, and have some people either good singers(H & Je) or different/interesting (PP) in the finals.

Jenny

April 30th, 2012

It’s not Kris that’s specifically bad… he’s a fine, pleasant singer. I own some of his music.

It’s what he represented on the show… a lesser talent who won a popularity contest over a much greater talent.

Jenny

The worst things about Idol from my perspective:

**The WGWG love.

**Last year’s “all-country” finale (it’s not Country Idol!)

**The slopping praise and standing ovations for lesser singers no matter how bad they are.

**Even when a theme is great, like the 80’s… the tendency to choose the BIG HITS that are soooo boring and overplayed.

JTesla

I’ve got the song that Joshua needs to sing for Brit Week: Shakespears Sister’s “Stay”. He could sing both parts of course, especially that high part by the American half of the duo (still a British group).

Deirdre

This is how the word got out about Kris’ concert according to mj:

“How bout the peir in Santa Monica? 8 pm” tweeted Kris to his fans, “You…me…couple tunes…ocean breeze…birds pooping on us. It’s gonna be great.”

No permit and a large crowd annoyed the security people on the pier.

Thank you for the clarification Deirdre, nice to see that he still has a few fans. Either that or a bunch of people showed up who wanted to see birds pooping on Kris.

Well, except that you like PP better than I like Josh…. Josh is mostly just “meh” to me, and can rise to “OK” on a good night. But if the final can’t be Jessica and Hollie, he’s better than the 2 other options. So, third by default…. not good, just less bad. ;-)

Rickster

April 30th, 2012

For me”.. the name “American Idol” itself belies the fact that they’re not looking for the best voice in the country. They’re looking for someone who can attract and be adored (idolized) by the largest number of people possible.

If they were looking for the best voice… maybe they should name the show… oh… wait. Forget this last part.

But the first part is still valid.

Jenny

Dear beloved twin Jenny: I don’t adore Px2 or anything, just think he’s more interesting than most of the contestants. I can at least listen to him without throwing up, and he’s lovely to look at to boot. I’ve always enjoyed looking at a pretty man! I’m soooo relieved to hear you don’t adore Joshua – I thought you did, and was worried for my dear little Sis! He creates feelings in me when he’s onstage, and they’re NOT good feelings; kinda like I’m starting to turn into “The Hulk”, if you know what I mean. Just want to rage and rant! At least I don’t have that strong a reaction to foot-stomper – just want to put earplugs in until her shouting match with the microphone is over. But she doesn’t bring on nausea.

Sam-A

April 30th, 2012
3:07 pm

Rick: Guess that would have more applied to Colton, who at least can actually sing! However a few people keep mentioning his “gospel” and “church” type singing – wouldn’t that be “Jesus” singing?

Sam-A

April 30th, 2012
3:12 pm

Since it looks like a few of you are big “Grey’s A” fans, did you all see that Patrick Dempsey was a pretty big hero over the weekend. Don’t have all the details, but apparently he was near a bad wreck with a car on fire, and jumped into the mess and pulled a couple of people from the wreckage, and apparently he actually put himself in a good bit of danger doing it. Good for him!

JTesla

April 30th, 2012

Ryan Gosling saved a pedestrian from getting hit by a car, not as major perhaps but it does lead to a question: ladies who would you rather be saved by, Ryan Gosling or Patrick Dempsey?

For me I’d say Sean Bean even though he wasn’t a choice, because then we could step into a pub and have a pint.

Jenny

April 30th, 2012
3:35 pm

No, no, Sam, I definitely don’t adore him! There have only been a couple of songs I’ve truly liked by him. No worries! I’m still on the “Hollie and Jessica final” train, but don’t have much hope that it could actually happen. So just trying to come up with a final that I’d want to watch (because I DO want to watch it!)

Yup, I know ALL about the strong reactions! It still mystifies me how I can find Phil so cute and sweet, but yet feel so nauseous and mad at some of his expressions when singing!

Love Patrick Dempsey. And what a great story! :-)

Jenny

April 30th, 2012
3:37 pm

JT – McDreamy for sure. Who’s Ryan Gosling again?

Jenny

April 30th, 2012
3:42 pm

oh, and Sam, re foot-stomper… if she’d stick to singing rock, like she did that very first week, I would be OK with her going further. She’s such a little performer, and I do like that side of her. It’s just the Reba-nasal-twang that upsets my ears.

Last year after the auditions, I didn’t even know Lauren Alaina was supposed to be “the country girl”. (I think she sang Aerosmith for her audition?) Anyway, I thought I’d really love her once the show started… but then there was just waaaaaay too much “Any Man Of Mine” and “Flat On The Floor”, and not enough pretty voice.

Sam-A

I don’t understand it myself, but then I don’t get McDreamy or that Sawyer guy from Lost whose pictures I showed my wife of him laying in the surf with only jeans on. Ryan G – ugh – not my type (like the baby face or pretty boy)

Wait, wasn’t the Lost guy also Charlie Salinger from Party Of Five? (Remember, with Neve Campbell and Lacey Chabert?) He was sort of cleancut on that show, and fairly cute, but I always liked the younger brother better.

Oh wait… JT, Jennifer Love Hewitt was on it too… she was the girlfriend of the cute brother! :-)

I thought the Voice tonite was pretty good overall – much better than it has been so far. What I liked was:

Lindsey Pavao – I know, I know, I know — she has the least actual vocal talent of the top 8, but I like her artsy, stylized approach to songs — and for guys, she’s “interesting”

Jamar Rogers – shows versatility in what he can do, good performer.

Juliet Simms – weird choices of garb & dress. Last week the gosh-awful Crow Wings, this week the shoulder padding in a gold long dress – what the H was that? — but delivered a very powerful R&B/Rock version of “It’s a Man’s World — that made the rafters ring!

Looks like the Judges still get mostly what they want tomorrow night – since their votes are weighted against America’s votes. So, you have to wonder if your votes really mean much of anything. Once the Judges used their save on Idol, then at least you felt like your votes finally had a bit of significance.

Sam: And Jen L H – really? I am surprised a guy would find her attractive – she doesn’t seem the type.

My son would do handstands on a hot roof just to be in the same room with those breasts!

Mercedes: I had the same thoughts of that pink thing on Elise. Just aged her even more. My Grandmother called it a bed jacket.

JT: Blake Lively and Mila Kunis I can understand. But I don’t think Miranda K is very pretty – that said, saw her on Ellen last week, and she was actually quite charming, and of course, great body. And Jen L H – really? I am surprised a guy would find her attractive – she doesn’t seem the type.

Sam-A – THAt’s it – bed jacklet! Usually of the matelassé (quilted) variety, for the cold, but there were fancy ones, like Elise’s too.

What I don’t udnerstand is how the contestants can wear in public, in front of millions of people, the often hideous stuff the “stylists” throw at them. Don’t they have mirrors in their dressing rooms?

Sam-A… “doesn’t seem the type” that doesn’t even make any sense. I have no clue what that means. I actually don’t get all the Blake Lively or Mila Kunis, attraction, to each their own, but Miranda Kerr not very pretty?? Sam it’s safe to say that your “attractive woman detector” is either broken or non-existent, which is understandable all things considered.

“they put Tony Lucca on with a side-story with his wife & child, Mr.Mom kudos — then he does a song with 2 hot women in a sexy thrill song ”

I noticed that too Seth. And I thought to myself “are they trying to sabotage this guy?”. If he hadn’t of performed so well and made me like a song I never knew, then he would of been in big trouble. That editing job made him look like a sleeze with those girls.

Every time I post today it hops in front of whatever post I’m responding to. Hope that going to the next page fixes that.

And re Elise’s “bed jacket”….each to his own. Our parents thought we wore some pretty hideous stuff. I usually keep my mouth closed about the latest fashion trends as long as the hooker chic style doesn’t walk in my front door.

Enjoyed The Voice last night. I really enjoyed Katrina’s “Killing Me Softly” (Lauren Hill version) and Juliet’s “It’s a Man’s World” (James Brown). Juliet really made that song her own. Even though it was a rock version, it was very well done and interpreted.

The Voice really does a good job in supporting their rock acts. I believe this year’s winner will be a rock act (i.e. Jamar or Juliet).

Idol mainstream failed to vote Daughtry and Lambert as winners. That tells me a lot about the mainstream, moreso than the producers of the show.

Good morning all! Boy, this new program they’ve begun here has kept me hopping. About caught up with reading your latest posts.

JT: My opinion as a woman, Blake L is very attractive in an unusual and sophisticated way. She was beautiful when a teen in “Sisterhood of….Pants”. Who knew Mila Kunis, at 15 on “That 70’s Show) would turn out so pretty!

Miranda would be pretty if she had bigger eyes – they always look so squinty. I always look at eyes in my “beauty assessments”. JLH – She does have a large “rack”, but she’s also got a big butt (guess some guys like it, women not so much) and thighs, and I just find her face not too pleasant to look at. But Deirdre said one of her sons adores her, so guess it’s, as I said above, to each his own vision of what “beauty” actually is.

Hope today is a better day for Pitchy.

As for paring up good guys with sleazy girls, didn’t Idol try to do something like that with Joshua and slithering near-nude dancers?

As for fashion, on “Idol” and elsewhere, I like that Philip sticks to what he’s comfortable in. As for hooker style-chic, NYT had a story last week on “prosti-tots”, young girls dressed up in rap-video garb. Pretty nasty. And expensive – $1,000 dresses for 8-year olds?

“Funny though, women can totally recognize and admire beauty in women”

No. Admire maybe. However, they would like to think they can recognize, but they can’t.

When it comes to me as a man recognizing beauty I’ll admit that I can’t do it. I’ve been trained by society as to what male beauty is, so I can make a stab at it, but anything outside the stereotypical attractive male and I’m lost. It’s the same for me with women who appear like they belong in a beauty pageant. I don’t like the look, but I’ve been conditioned by society to consider those women to be beautiful even if I’m not attracted.

A nice, calm and respectable woman went into a pharmacy, looked the pharmacist straight in his eyes & said, “I would like to buy some cyanide.”

The pharmacist asked, “Why in the world do you need cyanide?”

The woman replied, “I need it to poison my husband.”

The pharmacist’s eyes got big and he exclaimed, “Lord, have mercy! I can’t give you cyanide to kill your husband! That’s against the law! My license! They’ll throw both of us in jail! All kinds of bad things will happen! No! You CANNOT have any cyanide!”

The woman reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband in bed with the pharmacist’s wife.

MyPatootie’s joke reminds me of the old “Laugh-In” skit where Artie Johnson’s old man sits on the bench next to Ruth Buzzie’s “old lady” character.

As he starts to put the moves on her he says, “Care to guess what I’m here after?”

A coworker was laughing at me and I told her if she remember the show Laugh-in and Ruth Buzzie. Told her that’s how I feel I look whenever I carry this purse. That night, I threw it in the garbage. And about the mainstream issue. Quote from G @9:55 a.m. – “Idol mainstream failed to vote Daughtry and Lambert as winners. That tells me a lot about the mainstream…” Well put. That’s what I’ve been getting at forever. The short-sightedness of the mainstream. Forever my biggest frustration with ANY of these shows. :-)

And I also hate how the mainstream seems to blindly worship Angelina Jolie. I can’t stand her. All the adoptions and donated money in the world can’t change the fact that she intentionally set out to steal someone else’s husband…

But back to Idol’s case… G, I also agree with you that the system could balance a biased mainstream. But to do that, they’d have to give in and fix what’s broken.

After all, is anyone *really* impressed when Ryan yaps and babbles about “over 80 MILLION votes came in!!! The most we’ve EVER had!!!!!” I know I’m not… ;-)

Update on Patrick D’s rescue. Two teens crashed just outside his gates in Malibu. He heard the crash and ran out with a crow bar and fire extinguisher. The car was on its roof. Pitchy… I don’t know! It was an awfully fake-looking ultrasound, wasn’t it? But there was no reference made to the baby being so huge. Just that he’s developing without a brain and will die as soon as he’s born. And she mentioned it almost in passing… how she would think God was playing a sick joke on her but she couldn’t imagine a God that would let this happen.

The little girl whose sister stabbed her finally got to Amelia, though. She finally went in and talked to the parents, who wanted to donate all her organs so that something good would come out of the tragedy. Then Amelia went and told Jake that she wants the same thing for her baby’s life, and will he help her to be healthy so the baby can help others.
