Ryan Seacrest almost skipped his very first “Idol” hosting night due to illness. But he hung in there and though he looked a little rough, was a typical pro.

This is arguably the most evenly matched final six in the history of  “Idol.” When I asked the live bloggers who will go home tonight, it was split among all six contestants. I’ve never seen that before.

Overall, this was a curious night. I really enjoyed the Queen covers, perhaps because I absolutely love Queen songs period. The “personal choice” picks were more eclectic and not necessarily more successful though you have to give several of the singers credit for being gutsy and going for unfamiliar tunes. I do find it annoying that the songs are truncated so much and the judges’ (usually useless) commentary so long.

So I have no idea who is going home tomorrow. None. Zip. Nada.

Who do you think will go home Thursday night?

I will just throw out an almost random bottom three because I’m not sure who will be there and given what happened the last two weeks, nobody knows. I think Phil Phillips made a mistake doing an obscure Dave Matthews song so I think he’ll make his first entry into the bottom three.  I am not sure Joshua Ledet’s dull cover of india.arie would draw enough votes either. He’ll join Phil. I am flummoxed which female will join them.

Two weeks ago, Jessica Sanchez had the fewest votes. Her fans last week ensured that would not happen but can they keep her up this time around? Elise Testone and Hollie Cavanagh have skated near the bottom for weeks. I cannot tell who might end up with the fewest votes tomorrow.  I think only Skylar Laine is safe and even that, I’m not saying is a sure thing.  Sigh. Okay, I will say Hollie will end up in the bottom three and Joshua will go home.  I have to pick somebody.

- Jessica’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” – She took on a very difficult song that is six minutes long and was trimmed to less than one-third its normal length. Constantine Maroulis, Michael Johns and Kellie Pickler have also tackled this song. While I’m usually not a fan of hers, I thought she did a solid job given the limitations, even during the heavier rock portion. Grade: A-minus

- Skylar’s “The Show Must Go On”  – She captured the drama and nuance of Freddie Mercury’s classic, providing an impressive amount of control and maturity.  Grade: A

- Joshua’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” – He gives this his patented gospel twist while keeping it loose and fun.  I enjoyed it, even when he starts screaming a bit. Grade: B-plus

- Elise’s “I Want It All”- She seldom excited me. This was a good rendition but didn’t rivet me, though I did enjoy the use of the tambourine. Grade: B-plus.

- Phillip’s “Fat Bottomed Girls”- He lacks the power in his voice to match the chorus but he stayed in key and showed off his impish side with a very impish song.  Grade: B-plus

- Hollie’s “Save Me” – The judges were too rough on her, especially ramblin’ J. Lo. I thought she brought grace, power and confidence to this anthemic Queen classic. I thought she really encapsulated the words. Grade: A

- Jessica’s “Dance With My Father” (Luther Vandross) – This sentimental ode to Vandross’ late father is an odd pick, only because Jessica’s dad is still alive, just going off to Singapore as a military man. As usual, it’s pitch perfect but I didn’t quite buy it. And that wind machine was distracting. Grade: B-plus/B

- Skylar’s “Tattoos on this Town” (Jason Aldean) – She upped the twang to 11 on a so-so Aldean song. Great last note. But unlike a tattoo, this one left no permanent impression on me. Grade: B-plus

- Joshua’s “Ready For Love” (india.arie) This isn’t a case of Joshua himself and his vocals. They were fine. The melody-challenged song itself was a snooze. Yet he gets another standing ovation. Go figure! Grade: B-minus

- Elise’s “Bold as Love” (Jimi Hendrix) – My classic rock canon isn’t quite as great as Elise’s. She seemed stunned when Steven Tyler said this was not a familiar song. This rendition seemed very fussy. She seemed to be “showing off” her vocal skills more than properly interpreting the song. Is she confident or arrogant? Grade: B

- Phil’s “The Stone” (Dave Matthews Band) – I don’t generally like Dave Matthews. This is not one of his big hits and it feels kind of shapeless, even if it has some dramatic elements. I’m not sure it was smart for him to sing Matthews and remind people he is aping the guy. Grade: B

- Hollie’s “The Climb” (Miley Cyrus) This was a low-risk pick on Hollie’s part because she sang it for her audition. But unlike Joshua, Elise and Phil, she picked a familiar song and it works. She hits it on the mark. Grade: A-minus

1. Jessica. Her Bohemian Rhapsody was so-so but her Dance With My Father was heartbreakingly beautiful.

2. Joshua. Like his Crazy Little Thing Called Love and LOVED his second song

3. Phil. Fat bottomed Girls was a hoot and even though I don’t like that Dave Matthews song, Phil’s version was kind of haunting.

4. Elise. She nailed her Queen song but I didn’t like the Hendrix song.

5. Skylar. The girl can sing. The Queen song was good. Her Aldean song was way too country for me.

6. Hollie. Despite the complaints, the judges could not ignore the sour notes Hollie hit during her Queen song and shouldn’t ignore them. They were right this time. Her second song was very good. She’s just not in the same class as the rest of the singers. imo

Way to go Phil! That was the worst choice of a dmb song for this type of show even though it is one of the best dmb songs ever written. It was a big FU to “mainstream”!

I never even attempt to guess at the results since the viewers have a completely different take than the judges in many of the performances. I just never can understand why there can’t be a little bit of brutal honesty based on the live performances…way too many of the judges comments seem to be based on dress rehearsals and predetermined ahead of the actual performance OR perhaps I am just tone deaf. Randy for instance complimented Phil for being an artist BUT never critiqued his performance of the Dave Matthews number…”false-positive”….he never said he even liked it.

It’s safe to say that it will be a girl leaving tomorrow night. With Colton gone, that almost assures that both guys will be safe.

If it was another “shocker” for some, it would be Joshua, as the poll abave reflects. But I doubt that he will be at-risk.

As mentioned in Rodney’s review, Elise and Hollie have been in the bottom 3 the most, and logic would say that one of them will exit – if Jessica’s fans can keep-up the strong rally they had to raise her back to contention from the Idol surprise elim/save.

People are now rallying-around their fav, and wondering why some others are deaf and can’t see or hear the amazing talent their favorite displays. But, It’s getting more toward the “personality” and identification with the artist’s “style” and “music taste”, than it is for technically correct, perfect pitch singing now.

At least our votes count this week again – what happened last week when the votes actually counted, caused a surprise elimination. But now reality has returned, and either Hollie or Elise are most probable to go home and wait for the tour.

If Skylar went, it would be a mild surprise. If it was Jessica, we couldn’t call it a surprise, since she almost went before. I wonder if they will just use a bottom 2 now, since that’s 1/3 of the field.

I am Joshua Ledet all the way, but Jessica really tugged at my heart with “Dance With Father.” Like the judge many of tried to sing this song, including seasoned professionals. However, sang this song better than anyone other than Luther Vandross. I never even imagined that a woman, and a very young one at that, would sing this song so hauntingly beautiful. Jessica definetely has a future.

Jessica’s first performance wasn’t perfect at all as the judges made it seem, and her second while technically sound wasn’t spectacular as that song can be sung. She just doesn’t have an emotional connection in her voice.

Skylar’s first performance was shaky at the beginning but ended strong, her second was forgettable; much to genre specific for Idol.

Joshua’s first performance was technically sound, and even as a Joshua fan, I dkn’t believe it was worthy of a standing O although it was good. His second performance was perfect and without a doubt the best one of the night.

Phillip’s first performance was good, and his second was good. Not that he competition is getting smaller and tougher, it is clear that he doesn’t have the range that the other contestants have.

Elise’s first performance was worthy of what should have been one of two standing O’s. She almost ruined it by getting into the song too much, and doing to many of her funky runs, but didn’t. She missed the second one though which for her is detrimental. Definite Bottom Three.

Hollie had the weakest performances of the night, in her first performance. Her second song was safe, but good, however just as Elise she had no room for error. Bottom Three

Elise could not make american idol, terrible personality. Some songs she really messes up. Should def make bottom three. Jessica did great on her second song. Joshua always good. Philip sticks around in the middle because all the songs sound alike. I enjoy Hollies singing even if it is not perfect, second song Holly really nailed. Still miss Simon, even though Randy was better tonight, JLo still loves everyone, which is so boring and Steven was a little more honest.

OK. Are y’all sitting down?

I liked Phillip singing “Fat Bottomed Girls”.

8-O

No, he didn’t win the night for me (that was Jess and Hollie) … but I liked him. Even the Dave Matthews song wasn’t bad. And I still love his personality… always have.

Skylar, on the other hand, was abysmal. She talked the Queen song instead of singing (except a few big notes)…. and then when the first line of the country song squirted straight out of her nose… uuuggggghhhhh.

What was Randy drinking out of that coke cup? She was phenomenal, all right… phenomenally NASAL. Someone get the poor girl some decongestant.

And as far as the others – Deirdre, “heartbreakingly beautiful” was the perfect way to describe Jessica’s “Dance”. I didn’t think I liked that song, but she changed my mind. She also did a GREAT job with Bohemian Rhapsody… I loved it!

Hollie’s “The Climb” was tied for first with Jess’s two songs. I figured she’d slay that. I also guessed right on the Queen song for her, and I knew she’d sing it well too.

They’re both so strong, but different… I have them tied for first. Though Jessica maybe has the slight edge. She’s just so effortless and so polished.

Joshua’s second song comes in third for me. His first was a disaster, though. Once again, WHAT were the judges drinking?

Phil and Elise were both good, though I fear for Elise. She’s found her wheelhouse, but I’m afraid not enough people knew the Hendrix song.

And kudos to J-Lo for giving some really good, constructive comments there at the end. THAT’S what they need more of.

Here is my problem with Jessica’s dance with My father. I just didn’t see her connection with the song like everyone else seemed to. I lost my dad 2 1/2 years ago and every time I’ve heard that song since it’s really hit me emotionally, but when she sang it I just found myself bored by it. She just didn’t do it justice in my opinion. Jacob Lusk, Jermaine Jones…when they sang it you could see their emotional attachment to the song and that was really missing for me on this one tonight. I’ll re-watch it, but it’s by far not the best I’ve ever heard anyone do it. It sounded good technically (most of the time), but it just seems as if she’s just saying the words to the song like she’s reciting a speech.

Philip needs to go. He’s a one-trick pony, and that trick isn’t very good. He has no future in this business. Elise is a bar band singer with a bad attitude who can’t figure out why the public doesn’t like her. Those two will be in the bottom 3 for sure. As for the third, I have no idea. Skylar’s Alden song was horrible. She can sing but didn’t show it there.

The person with the biggest upside in this competition is Hollie. The girl has an amazing voice but doesn’t have the stage presence yet. If she was in a recording studio and not live in front of millions of people, everyone would hear how good she is instead of hearing Randy and JLo bash her all the time. With the right singing coach and manager, she’ll be a star.

If Jessica can restrain herself like she did tonight and just sing and let her voice shine without all the needless runs, she’ll be big. Personally I’m not a fan of hers, but there’s no doubting her ability. Sometimes she feels like she has to show off her skills with every note, but as Randy pointed out tonight, when she doesn’t do that, “Yo, that was hot!!!”

Joshua is too likeable to go home yet, and he has a really nice voice. He needs someone to help him pick his songs, and he can make it to the end.

Hey D, I was just reading comments from earlier, and you forgot Adam’s Bohemian Rhapsody. In his audition, so a capella… which made it even MORE impressive when he slayed it. And guys… seriously… I love Hollie, and am the first to yell when they pick on her… but the J-Lo comments after Queen weren’t picking. She was trying to HELP. Even Hollie herself says she needs help with how to relax and forget the millions watching. She ASKED the Queen guys how to overcome it!!! (loved what they told her… to remember that the audience is on her side and wants her to do well.)

Come on guys, I know we love to bash the judges, but tonight on that song J-Lo did her job well.

Jenny – Hollie, to me, hit four bad notes in her first song. Three were really early on and after that she was actually really good til that last bad note that we all heard. Her saving grace is that none of the Queen songs really wowed anyone (except the judges). Her second performance was flawless. I just wonder why nobody really ever comments on Jessica’s flatness or her pitch problems that she puts on display roughly three times every song.

First of all, I would like to say that this is the BEST TOP 6 in AI history. Having said that, we really have to nit pick in order to see who the best and the worst were. So, when I say the worst, it is really not Worst in the sense that they are bad in any way. It is just not up to par compared to the rest. Now, to me, the Best of the Night will go to Jessica Sanchez. First of all, it is not easy to sing the most iconic song of Queen and singing “Bohemian Rhapsody” is not an easy feat. Also, that song is a long song and to compress it in 1 1/2 min will take a little of the story telling and interpretation of the song. But, having said all that, I think that Jessica not only matched it, her vocals was splendid. If you go check the original song in youtube, you will see that there really is no super high note in that song and the rock part, I think she made it her own. I think her interpretation was pretty good and the background and the part that she rocked it was also pretty good. Now, the second song, “Dance With My Father” of Luther Vandross, was just Amazing!!! It was the Best Song of the Night!!! If there was any question of her connecting to songs, there is no question about that tonight. Also, her rendition of this song is the Best I’ve heard out there. The soft melodic tone she used and her interpretation was just fantastic. She is an artist and I am amazed how she sings and picks the biggest songs of the biggest artists in the wor

Richard

Jessica picks the biggest songs of the biggest artists in the world and I like that about her. First of all, she’s got spunk to do that and at the same time taking that risk also shows how great she is as an artist. She doesn’t pick easy songs to sing and just try to be safe each week but from the beginning she’s been consistent about it. Now, the 2nd person of the night was Skylar because of her stage performance aspect. Her vocals are really not that superior, I think it’s above average and probably pretty good for a country artist but not really Awe inspiring if you no what I mean. I actually think that it’s actually an acquired taste and many people might like it or many might not like it. The twang and nasally sound that sometimes comes out could turn of many. I am not a country fan but I see her talent although, I don’t get that the judges are head over heels about her. The 3rd of the night is Joshua. He is the favorite to win this whole thing by the judges but I don’t think America is eye to eye with the judges regarding Joshua. The standing ovations in every performance can be a gag to others. Like, last week, he made a mistake at the end on the “I Believe” song of Fantasia at the end and the judges gives him a standing O again….like what? I think they do that because they no that he deserves one every week or else he would leave. Now, the 4th is Phillip. He is getting millions of votes from teen girls, mid range and older women. Although, if you really want to keep it real, he sounds the same on every single song. He uses the same notes with the same constipated look and whether he uses a guitar or not and stand in the middle every week. At some point, you a

Richard

you get tired of it. Imagine having 12 to 16 songs of the same kind on the cd? I don’t know. Now, the 5th would be Elise and 6th would be Hollie but they have been inconsistent all through out.

takakupo

April 26th, 2012

Philip was by far the worst of the night. No tune; no melody; singing like he’s constipated? Come on.

Everyone else had really strong songs. Joshua had a beautiful India Arie number till the end; Elise hit her stride in the middle of the Hendrix ditty. Jessica really had a beautiful “Dance With my Father” and Hollie was outstanding on “The Climb”. I would look for Skylar to be in trouble though as she was the only one with two middling performances with plenty of trouble between them both. Again though, Philip is dead last. Don’t know why he gets such kid glove treatment.

Morning!

Haven’t been around much and haven’t taken the time to read all the comments but I have some strong disagreements.

Jessica was way too “sweet” on Bohemian Rhapsody. Plus, it’s really a stupid song choice for anyone. You simply can’t do justice to a 6+ minute song in 90 seconds – no matter who you are.

Jenny, we usually agree but I can’t go with you on your comments regarding JLo’s critique of Hollie’s first song. ‘Save Me’ is a plea for love, a serious song, not a happy little ditty. JLo said she would have liked to have seen Hollie smile and enjoy herself during it. WHAT???!!! …If Hollie had done that, they would have bashed her for not ‘connecting’ to the song.

Hopefully, Jennifer will look back at the tape today and realize just how stupid (stupy!) she sounded!

I don’t really have a favorite this season. I do think PhilX2 has gone about as far as he should. The past couple weeks has shown how limited his vocals really are. A full CD of his would probably be boringly repetitious. Every track sounding so much like the last one that you’re contemplating that single-edged razor blade in the medicine cabinet.

Jenny: I was mostly trying to kid with D cause she never misses a chance to remind us that Hollie is bad.

What? The ONLY time I have talked about Hollie in the last 2 weeks is after a performance or if someone asks me about her. What am I supposed to do after a performance? Lie? I don’t like Hollie’s voice. Sorry! I agree with the judges. I know that makes me some kind of evil but it’s just the way it is.

In truth, I thought there was only one person who nailed Both songs last night and that was Joshua. You may not like his style but he never falters, he never hits a bad note, he brings it to the table every time he sings.

And let’s talk about why the judges praise him every time. He is a stage performer. He moves! He emotes! And while he may be too much for the cameras, he must be a breath of fresh air to a live audience. Who else, of the other 5, puts on a show like Joshua. If we were in the audience, we’d probably stand up, too.

That being said, my number 1 performance last night was Jessica’s Dance With My Father. The emotional depth and spot on vocals made the song stand out for me….and I’m so sick of Idol contestants singing it that I could scream. However, Jessica reminded me that it truly is a lovely song.

Johnny Fever

Jessica is a robo-singer. Even her strutting seems stilted and over rehearsed. I don’t feel anything when she sings, other than fakeness.

Elise is undersold by the show. When she grabs hold of a rock song and lets go, she gives concert-quality performances…from the dancing to the banshee screams. I could see her fronting a rock band very easily after this show.

Skylar is great, but (even as country as I am) she’s starting to remind me of Pickler and I wasn’t a big fan of hers. And I do love a girl with a thick, sweet southern accent, but for some reason hers is getting on my nerves.

Hollie has about run her course. She’s gotten by on guile and had flashes of what has kept her in the race, but I still don’t see the swagger it takes to win the show from her. Really talented, but someone needs to pull her aside and make her believe it.

Joshua has a good voice and I really want to like him, but I didn’t like Fantasia and I don’t think Josh is much longer for this show.

I love Phil but think he might go the way of Daughtry, lose before the final and have the best career out of the bunch. He has great music sensability and a very unique voice.

My bottom 3 are Jessica, Joshua and Hollie. My vote would be for Jessica (but I know I’m in the minority). It’ll likely be Hollie, because I don’t think she has connected with the general AI viewer as much as Jessi and Josh. If Elise is in the bottom 3 this time around, it would be a travesty. (Yes, I’m a REALLY big Elise fan, if you can’t tell.)

I don’t know if anyone left would really have any success if they won due to the mostly lame records they are made to put out at first and especially the “winner’s song”. I think some would probably crash & burn worse than others, namely those with names starting with “J”…..

The show was a little long for me. I liked Jessica’s Dancing with My Father, nice Luther song. Phillip did ok. I can’t believe I said that, but it’s true. Something was missing, don’t know what it was, but it lacked showmanship or something. Still pulling for him though. Elise surprised me, she did well on her first song. Joshua did fantastic on both songs.

Rickster

April 26th, 2012
8:37 am

Rickster’s Rankings:

1. Skylar: The girl just continues to get better and better each week. You can see that she genuinely loves being on the stage. Her whole face smiles. Loved her “The Show Must Go On.” (If you’ve not heard Nicole Kidman sing it in “Moulin Rouge” – you need to.) Her “Tattoos on this town” was okay. Would have rather her do “Everybody Dies Famous In A Small Town” by Miranda Lambert.

2. Holly: Finally! She gets a much deserved standing-o from the judges. I think her “Save Me” was a (not-so?) subtle hint to her fans & voters. But it was a solid performance. “The Climb” was her best of the night

After that… I pretty much don’t care.

Phillip: Screwed up on both his songs.

Joshua: I can’t stand.

Jessica: Suffers from a bad case of HSC (Horrible Song Choice) Syndrome and seems VERY full of herself. Did not like either of her songs.

Elise: I was wrong. She doesn’t need to go “rocker chick.” She just needs to go.

I think Skylar is on her way to the finals. Who joins her is a guess at the moment… but I’m leaning toward Phillip.

Elise is cocky and thinks she has won. Just watch her antics when she knows the camera is there – not while she is singing – but other times when she makes very inappropriate gestures. Not a Jessica fan either. I think these judges have ruined Idol for me, well except for Randy. At least he tells the truth. I don’t always agree, but who agrees with “that was wonderful” “I love your voice” “you are the best” from the other two after every single performance. And I am not even going to start about that save…

Let’s get real guys. It’s who can collect the most votes that’s going to win. Not who’s the best.

And for who’s going to have a career after idol. It’ll be the the person(s) that sets him/her apart from all the many singers in the world with the voice or the song or even stage presence.

Look at Katherine McPhee. I thought she’d win, but didn’t. Now she’s on TV.

I think with a great song to record, all six could make it big, but without….

Honestly I think the judges should be sent home because they don’t give honest feedback for that night’s performance. Gives new meaning to teacher favorites. All of the idolettes are very talented but they don’t always pick the best song and/or deliver it on stage. Personally, I don’t see the hype with Skyler. Too me she screams more than she sings. All of them have moments but no one is standing out consistently above all else night after night.

I thought Skylar was top Dawg last night. She just continues to impress me, and I don’t like country music that much. Holly was great, and that was hillarious when she jumped up and down once she saw the judges giving her a standing O.

I thought Elise and Phillip were the worst. I just don’t see Phillip being in the bottom though, and I can’t see anyone but Elise going home.

“This is arguably the most evenly matched final six in the history of “Idol.” ”

Without a doubt. Other then Elise, anyone of these could win this thing. I don’t know who to like? And I LOVE it. I always wondered if Idol goes across the nation and interviews hunderds of thousands of singers out there why doesn’t every contestant just blow us away? I mean, I swear I’m not that great, but I’m a better singer then some of the former contestants. But this year is finally the way it should of always been. And I’m loving every minute of it.

It is about time

April 26th, 2012

Jessica nailed Dance with My Father and proved she is the class of the group as far as vocal talent. Now others may have preference based on styles but it is no denying the girl can sing. This is the first performance that I have been replaying by a contestant this year. For the full studio version you can go here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO81Sm2ZlRw
Normally if it is a good performance I youtube the original and listen to compare but Jessica owned this song because she felt the love of her own father.
I knew during auditions this would be an evenly matched group because although I do not buy country music, I really like Skyler. My hope is Elise or Hollie leaves tonight, they have gone as far as they need to go and the next one leaves the following week.
If we have a final four of Jessica, Skyler, Joshua, and Phillip, I do not think anyone can really complain who wins. The final two will be a contrast of styles because I think the it will be Jessica/Joshua on one side and Skyler/Phillip on other side.

Neg's Take

April 26th, 2012
9:10 am

Been a couple weeks since I’ve stopped by to post. Here’s to making up for lost time, and giving my rankings of last night’s performances.

1. Hollie: She’s made a believer out of me. Hollie’s simply got the biggest, best voice in the competition, and blew the roof off the joint with two stellar performances. Her resolve in the face of judicial bias against her reminds me a lot of Haley from last season. I definitely see her as a favorite to make The Finale.

2. Elise: One killer performance (Want It All), one uneven performance (Bold As Love). Story of her Idol run. I’m a big fan of her music style and taste, but how many times can she survive the Bottom 3? Probably another trip there tonight.

3. Phillip: Loved FBG, but still not sure how I feel about the 2nd song (The Stone). Never heard it before, and it never really got there for me. I dig his style, though, and as a WGWG he’s a lock for The Finale.

4. Skyler: Great performer and likable, but her performances were dull, shouty and way overpimped. I’m not liking her voice in the lower register. She’s got a 50/50 shot at finishing Top 3 overall, but that’s as far as I see her getting.

5. Jessica: My how The Pimped Golden Child has fallen. Bohemian was simply a disaster. Terrible. Dance With My Father was an improvement vocally, but way to deep of a song for her to properly connect with. She could very well be Bottom 3 tonight, and is now a long shot for Top 3 overall.

6. Joshua: The Chosen Pimped One got his meaningless Standing Ovations from the judges again, but his voice inspires very few beyond that. He was so cheesy, grating, shrieking, and annoying on Crazy Little Thing (as per usual) I had to FFW after 30 seconds. He was better, though a bit dull, on Indie. Despite the Pimped One status, he’s got no chance at the Finale and a very remote shot at Top 3.

But, It’s getting more toward the “personality” and identification with the artist’s “style” and “music taste”, than it is for technically correct, perfect pitch singing now.”

In other words, it’s a popularity contest. This is the main reason Simon left and I certainly understand. Idol is in true form right now, and it doesn’t matter who’s perfect pitch or spot on in a performance. People really don’t care about performances at this point. Know one is going to switch from Skyler to Phil if they are a Skylar fan. The only x-factor is where do the lost contestant votes go? Based on last week, Phil should be safe.

Bottom 3?

Joshua – If Jacob Lusk lasted til the top 5, why shouldn’t Josh last a bit longer?

Hollie – Regardless of a strong second song and a standing O, she just doesn’t have the fan base. The sympathy votes don’t last long, and they will not save her tonight. She’s in strong jeopardy of leaving.

Elise – I see she’s showing more leg, and maybe that’s getting her a bit more male votes. It’s just a matter of time before the bottom falls out for her. If not this week then the next.

Seems to me this whole thing about the judges and “honest feedback” has more to do with who the listener likes the best than what the judges are saying.

If you’re a Hollie fan, you’re going to think the judges are bad. If you’re a Joshua fan, you’ll think the judges are good.

I think the judges are pretty useless this year, not because of who they like(they always pimp someone every year and pimping is often in the eye of the non-pimped fan) but because they refuse to be specific.

JLo needs to stop and think before she speaks. ST just needs to think, period and Randy has been doing this a long time and needs to stop with the superlatives and offer some help.

JT mentioned that this year’s judging borders on the negative with Hollie. I can see where he would think this but I think the problem is more that the judges are so over-the-top with the other singers that when Hollie receives mostly justified(imo) criticism, it sounds a lot more negative than it is. I don’t think they’re picking on Hollie so much as they’re giving an honest opinion to a singer who hasn’t consistently met the standards set by the other singers.

Last night a number of singers got some negative reviews but no one seemed to notice until Hollie’s first song, at which point, everyone jumped on the Poor Hollie Bandwagon(boy that thing gets a lot of use) and completely ignored the negative criticisms of Elise and Phil’s second song.

I think we need new judges. Jimmy needs to take a seat at the table to replace ST. I’m not even sure ST stays awake for the whole show.

I’d bring Paula back to replace JLo. She liked everybody but not necessarily their performances. If not Paula, then someone else…PLEASE.

I’d keep Randy but put him back in his former capacity as the judge who has little to say but says it anyway.

Though Jessica has a great voice, she doesn’t have the charisma (or stage presence) to be an american idol. She and Hollie should have waited another year or two so as to gain more maturity before coming on the show. The only one who does show comfort and stage presence is Skylar and maybe Elise. Though I’m not crazy about their music, they are more at ease when performing than any of the others. Great six, though! They all will be successful down the road.

THIS IS MY VERY FIRST TIME COMMENTING ALTHOUGH I READ THE COMMENTS EVERYDAY. WHAT COMPELLED ME TO SAY SOMETHING WAS THE DISGUSTING COMMENTS ABOUT THE CONTESTANTS’ PHYSICAL APPEARANCE. IT IS A SAD BUT TRUE FACT THAT THE ENTIRE PACKAGE IS IMPORTANT IN BECOMING A SUCCESSFUL RECORDING ARTIST, BUT LET’S NOT FORGET THAT THIS IS A SINGING COMPETITION. TO CALL A 16 YEAR OLD LITTLE GIRL BUTT UGLY AND REDUCE HER TO A “MEXICAN HOUSEKEEPER” (TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE CONTEXT OF YOUR POST I ASSUME THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE A BAD THING) IS UTTERLY RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL. THIS IS SOMEONE’S CHILD AND THEY DO SOMETIMES READ THESE THINGS. IT’S VERY EASY TO HIDE BEHIND A COMPUTER AND THROW OUT SUCH RACIALLY CHARGED COMMENTS WHEN I’M ALMOST SURE THAT YOUR LIFE AMOUNTS TO A LITTLE OF NOTHING. “JDAWG” AND “ANOTHER COMMENT” YOU SHOULD BE VERY ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's compare the two

April 26th, 2012

There seems to be a lot of comparison between Jessica and Hollie because they have the most similar styles. I will liken this to Mariah Carey and Celine Dion, both our great singers. However, Mariah has more range to sing different types of songs and notes, just about anything with a lean towards R&B, i.e. Jessica. Celine does what she does and is great at it, as long as she stays in her lane she great, however she cannot outsing Mariah or Whitney (RIP) and she knows it but still tries, i.e. Hollie.

Actually, that is very much not true. Joshua hits bad notes all the time, but he quickly covers it up with his melisma. So it’s so quick and subtle most people let it slide, including me. But this kind of annoys me in singers. If they can’t hit a nice sustained note, they just go all over the place =/ Holly is the exact opposite. She does almost no runs, and hits sustained notes. Sometimes she nails it, sometimes she doesn’t. I bet you in a studio, she’s the best of the bunch. But Idol is about live performances so…

We’ve seen, in the last few years, that winning is not that important to the Idol contestants’ future success. Idol even uses non-winners in its opening montage. But first and foremost, they want to put on a show that gets great ratings.

I totally Despise everything about Joshua onstage. Unlike a few others, I can’t call his catterwalling “singing”! He screams, he screetches, he whines, he cries – its the most irritating voice on Idol since Season 3’s “winner”. When he’s not screaming, the voice wavers so much, sounds like he’s gargling. Please send him home tonight!

Skylar is totally dreadful. Who ever told her that stomping around the stage like she’s putting out forest fires is appealing. And she really needs to see an ENT about her clogged sinuses! The sounds outta her mouth are horrible. She doesn’t have an iota of subtlety – just shouts every word out.

For the above two, I’d rather hear rubber sole shoes squeaking on a basketball court that listen to either of them “sing”.

I hate “Fat Bottomed Girls”, but actually thought Philipx2 did a good job. Re the 2nd song, don’t know anything about Dave Matthews’ music, and seems I really DON’T want to – what a droning, tuneless piece of crap song – agreed 100% with Randy. That said, Px2 sounded ok on it. I did notice he kept putting his hand on the back of his hip – in the kidney area. Poor baby.

Loved when Ryan said Julianne had said, “oh yummy” when Px2 passed her. Funny.

Jessica ok – I’d give her #3 spot. Certainly not as great as Randy raved re song #2.

I loved Hollie – thought she was good on 1st song, fabulous on 2nd – she’s my #1 tonight. Regardless of other comments, I love her voice and find her very appealing.

Elise – ok – a bit raspy for me (and I’m a huge Janis J fan!). Doesn’t deserve to go home this week – that’s reserved for the two screamers.

Seems to me that for the first half of the season, the judges were instructed that Jessica must be the winner, and they were to do everything possible to accomplish this, then suddenly something happened, the tide turned against her, and Joshua is now anointed God on Earth. I expect him to part the LA River, multiply some loaves, and walk on water any day now. Makes me sick when the judges carry on about anyone, my fave or least fave. Not fair to give such totally biased opinions to any contestant. Oh for the olden days of the first 5 or 6 seasons, when all was fair and worked with the judges.

In order, then:

1. Hollie, “The Climb”
2. Hollie “Save Me”
3. Phillip “The Stone”
4. Elise “I Want it All”
5. Joshua “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”
6. Skylar “The Show Must Go On”
7. Phillip “Fat Bottomed Girls”
8. Joshua “Ready for Love”
9. Elise “Bold for Love”

I put Jessica in the bottom for several reasons. “Bohemian Rhapsody” is a very long song and she’s got, what, 100 seconds to sing it? Not smart choice. The second song, “Dance With My Father” felt calculated, cheesy, saccharine. An elevator song. Didn’t like the song when my father was alive and don’t like it now. So two bad song choices for Jessica.

Jessica has a nice enough voice, as does Hollie but the real artists this year are Skylar and Phillip. The rest will fade into oblivion even if they win.

I repeat each week, Joshua does not deserve all the stanidng O’s. He’s good, but not that good. I love Phillip but didn’t like his Queen pick, however, his second song was brilliant. I want to see Phillip and Skyer in the finals. The rest are just so-so, in my opinion, either inconsistent or all their songs sound the same. P.S. Phillip has this “I don’t care” attitude and I would not be surprised if he is voted off tonight or next week because he is just going to do his thing and say whatever. So it would not bother me if he goes before the top three. (Jessica, Joshua, and Skyler).

Idol could fix the judging by implementing a gymnastics style judging system. If they were clear that they were speaking of technical merit and artistic merit it would provide better critiique.

For instance take Jessica, my favorite, on the Queen song: technically it was a 10 artistically it was a 5 at best. She sang it perfectly, but it was really done wrong. Hello Jennifer talk to her about smiling when you need to smile and being mad when you need to be mad.

So, where does that get us on Hollie? Deirdre, I know you have had issues with the artistic merits of Hollie, yet today you seem to be arguing more regarding the technical aspect. The main focus of the judges regarding her Queen song was on the artistic. I think that is where the disconnect is occurring. The argument seems to be: the judges got it wrong (the judges focus was on the artistic) while your counter argument is more focused on the technical aspect.

Well, as I said this is being typed on a phone, so please excuse me. Just to be up front, Hollie’s Queen song wasn’t my favorite, the judges were correct, but I still got a negative vibe from them. Yes they should have favorites, they are not smart enough to support their favorites with subtlety.

My rankings last night are
1. Hollie – she was awesome on both songs she was flawless! magical
2. Elise she picked the right songs
3. Phil smart choice in songs
4. Joshua. First song was a screamer. Second song was fantastic
5 skylar. She did better with first song. I am not really a country fan though
6 Jessica. First song was bad. Off key and the visual background was terrible with her heads floating around It was over indulgent as Simon would say. Her second was better but not great

Now let’s get to the topic at hand.

I think Joshua proved to everyone that he doesn’t just scream with his second song. What’s the difference between a scream from someone with a rock background vs. the scream of someone with a R&B/gospel background? The answer is genre of music. Don’t use that as a guage of whether he can sing or not just say you don’t prefer his style because there should bo no debate that the boy has talent.

Jessica could vitually be flawless if she knew how to pick her songs. I’m not sure why she hasn’t selected some of the covers she’s done on her youtube channel but at the end of the day…she can sing. I think she is starting to suffer from a lack of personality and emotion just as Hollie but at the end of the day she has far more vocal ability than Hollie could dream of.

Skylar is the epitome of country and as much as I want to like her I do agree with others when they say she is very nasal when she sings.

Elise’s personality is going to be the death of her (if her bad performances don’t get her kicked off first). Her comment last week about her being criticized more because she’s the oldest is a poor excuse for rising to the challenge. If that were true, how can you blame them for expecting more from someone who has been doing this nearly twice as long as the other contestants. She reminds me of Ruben Studdard after perfomances but in a bad way. As soon as she finishes a song it’s like the life has been sucked out of her….I can only imagine how drainging this could be but don’t let that read all over your face.

Phil is simply a performer. I love him and always has since he did “Thriller” during the auditions, although I must admit that he doesn’t have much of a voice (but neither does a lot of artists these days so he should be fine in the industry). There’s no doubt that he knows who he is and makes no apologies about it.

Thanks to Mercedes I see that I’m not the only one that doesn’t think Jessica is all that the judges make her out to be.

I am fully aware that I just can’t stand them, but it is not in my spectrum of understanding to see how anyone, anyone, could actually believe that Joshua and Skylar are “good singers”. Both their voices just cause actual pain to my ears, and if I had to hear them more than the few seconds per song they’re allotted, I would probably develop a migrane and throw up. Not kidding – their voices are so unpleasant to my ears. I’m not claiming to be a musical expert, but I sure can recognize pain. Grew up in a family with a musician father who developed some of the big southern singers of the time, and have rarely heard such c0ckamamie being called singing seriously.

Hollie is this year’s Haley. Those who love her are blown away, those who don’t think she’s the absolute worst, and the judges uniquely single her out for negative comments. She’s the underdog coming out of oblivion to threaten the establishment’s choices, and I, for one, love it. Polarization makes great theater!!

Sam-A, I have to disagree regarding Joshua and Skylar. They are my least favorites, but I have to admit that they are technically very good singers. They also know how to connect, and I can see where people who are into those types of music would like them. However, I just don’t like their type of music, at all. It’s kind of like an opera singer, they might be technically the best singer in the world, but that doesn’t mean I want to listen to more than 5 seconds of it.

So in the end I agree, yet disagree.

Neg: I think Elise is this years Haley, at least from a musical standpoint. She was also assumed by many as someone who would depart very early, yet she is still here.

With some intense coaching, she has potential, but I think she’s been doing it too long to really change now. Anyways, you can go into any dive bar in America and see an Elise in there. She’s absolutely nothing special and verges on below average for me.

I also think shes wrong to persue rock. It doesn’t seem to really fit her, although she tries to force it. I don’t know what her style should be, probaly coffee house style, folk, smooth jazz, something along those lines.

And I (ah) don’t like (ah) how it (ah) seems like (ah) Joshua (ah) adds those annoying (ah) ahs throughout the song. I don’t think they add anything to the song, and actually annoy instead.

Hollie was good last night, but it took her 12 weeks just to get that good. She isn’t consistent. I voted only for Joshua. Jessica is usually good, but she was not good for her first song. Skylar or Hollie should go home tonight. Hollie should have went home a long time ago. She has a nice voice, but she was only good twice since the competition starte. Too little – too late for Hollie! Either Hollie or Skylar will go home tonight! Phillip Phillips is really good. I like him, but Joshua was better! Joshua has proven that he can sing any type of music well! I love him. Actually all of the Idols this year is much better singers…true singers than the people that are dropping albums now! Joshua’s was an interesting take though i thought parts he overdid it vocally…. knowing how difficult TSMGO is to sing and knowing the background on that… Freddie’s soaring vocal and determination to get that recorded so close to his passing I give Skylar kudos for doing that song justice…tonight its the official touring band, i will watch that… i hope since Queen and Adam are doing 3 shows together they may sneak a surprise in… one can only hope my soul is painted like the wings of butterflies………………………… *shudders* cheers everyone!

JT – While I see similarities between Elise and Haley in musical taste and style, they are very different in personality, age and life experience. Hollie is the one who was discounted as fodder from the start, but has now gathered momentum and polarization as we get deeper into the competition. Also, Hollie sang RITD in Top 7 this year just like Haley sang RITD Top 7 last year. Both were catapulted from that performance, and I see a similar arc forming. Finally, watching Hollie get singly crucified by the judges after strong performances is SO reminiscent of Haley’s treatment last season.

Deirdre: I’m right here with you regarding your Mom. Mine will be gone 1 year on May 19th. The last year of her life, when she started slipping away and couldn’t make a lot of sense, and couldn’t take care of herself was Hell, especially when we had to put her into assisted living. But the last 3 months, when she really became helpless and had to go to the “Memory Care” section, was unbearable. As I work, only went once a week to see her, but it was the most miserable hour or two of my life each week.

You have a long, sad road ahead, and I hope your Mom can keep herself (if that makes sense) until the end, because mine couldn’t and I don’t even know who that woman was for the last weeks! My thoughts are with you both.

JT, if talking about losing your Mom when you’re young, I agree totally. However, my Mom lived 86 years, and for 85 years she was an active person living on her own for 23 years after my Dad died. Her memory was fading some, and she was a lot slower, but getting along pretty well anyway. An unexpected visit to a hospital, where they gave her the chemical stress test for heart twice in one day, and she came out alarming hateful, violent and pretty darn scary. We were told she’d never be able to live alone again. Something the hospital did to her sent her into total dementia in very short time. She had to go immediately into an assisted living facility, while still functioning somewhat, but her decline was scary fast. She finally lost mobility and spent a couple months telling us she was “ready for this to be over”. The last 3 months I wouldn’t wish on anyone. It, sad to say, was a great relief the day her body finally gave up. Sometimes people just live too long, and my Mom was one of them. I hope that won’t be the case for me.

I just want the judges to acknowledge that Jessica is shaky and flat in her lower register. Yes, she CAN sing, but don’t over hype her. Actually tell her she needs to work on something. I really liked Joshua all through the auditions. He was my favorite guy, but it is the judges who have soured me to him. There has to be SOME criticism. He can’t be perfect every time. For instance, the only time I seem to see him hold a note is when he is screaming that note. It never seems to be a nice, sustained, in tune note. And there are a lot of notes he cuts short. Maybe that’s his style or maybe he just can’t hold that note. No doubt he can sing, but some critiques wouldn’t hurt this year old contestant on a singing competition. Phillip has lost his appeal, kind of like the guy David who did Paula’s Straight Up a couple years back lost his. It’s not entertaining anymore. He is a dime a dozen bar, cover band singer who just happens to be on American Idol. Liked him at the start, but see no progression. Skyler can sing, but she can also scream a lot. She WILL be successful whether she wins or not because of her genre. Elise I sometimes like and sometimes don’t and I’m not sure she will ever command a large audience. When they chose her for the top 24 I didn’t even know who she was. She is a good singer, but so are a lot of people I’ve seen play on the Chicagoland bar scene. I’ve never made it a secret that I like Hollie the best. Last year I remember how bad she was in the audition with her nerves, so when she did so well this year, I was a fan. She has taken an unusual amount of beatings this year from the judges. Their whole vibe changes when she comes up. She has not been perfect, but none of them are, so why so much criticizing of Hollie. There are a couple songs that she hasn’t been that good on, but most of the time she does a really nice job. If they would just judge evenly across the board, their critiques of her wouldn’t seem so harsh, but maybe constructive (if they actually said anything constructive). I almost hope she doesn’t win because of the awful album they’ll make her do. She has shown some toughness and fight though in the eyes of some pretty harsh judgements and that makes her a winner.

I think the poll at the top of this article speaks a lot of truth about the results this week – anybody could be sent home.

I honestly think each contestant had one song highlight and another song misstep.

HIGHLIGHTS

Jessica – “Dance With My Father”
Skylar – “Show Must Go On”
Joshua – “Ready For Love”
Elise – “I Want It All”
Phillip – “Fat Bottomed Girls”
Hollie – “The Climb”

MISSTEP

Jessica – “Bohemian Rhapsody” (It’s just impossible to cut this epic to 2 minutes or less)
Skylar – “Tattoos on This Town” (WAY too country. Overcooked the fried chicken on this one.)
Joshua – “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” (Way overrated. “Runaway Baby” was better.)
Elise – “Bold As Love” (This was just a hot mess. She changed an already tough to recognize song and threw it in the Twilight Zone, never to be recognized again…)
Phillip – “The Stone” (He gets praised for doing DMB covers of well known songs. So why should we be impressed when he actually sings a DMB song? And a lesser known one at that? He’ll regret doing that.)
Hollie – “Save Me” (I actually didn’t think this was a total flop, but it certainly wasn’t anything ground breaking for her. And she more than anyone needs to leave a mark with voters.)

Bottom 3 Prediction – Elise, Hollie, Joshua (though I hope Phillip gets a wake up call and winds up here instead)

Eliminated – Elise

Late lunch and catching up!
Rickster @8:37 – What you said, is the one thing I do love about Skylar. “You can see that she genuinely loves being on the stage. Her whole face smiles.”

And RxDawg @9:05 – yes, I also wonder why, with so many to choose from, it’s not ALWAYS this way. (It should be!) But this is the most closely matched group they’ve EVER had at this point. And one of the most talented, too.

Even though we all personally have a least-favorite or two… I think most of us would admit there’s not a dud in the group.

G @9:13 – yes, I have ALWAYS believed Simon left because he couldn’t stand that it had become just a popularity contest. It was written all over his face when Adam lost.

And honestly, I am right with him and it’s the reason that I’ll one day lose interest. (But not this year, not yet anyway.) Oh, and your 9:23 is right on.

Neg, I always love reading your take! We mostly agree, except we’re polar opposite on Jessica (and I’d have Skylar at the bottom this week.) Great take, though! :-)

D, I’d love to see Paula back. Though I do think JLo means well. (She’s just spacey in a different way from “Pauler”, whose spaciness was often caused by Simon’s antics.)

However, JLo does give (in JT’s words) slopping praise for mediocre performances from others, and I wish that would stop. And please, no more standing o’s for Joshua! Funny that Skylar ragged on him about it.

And I did like one thing Steven brought up last night… he harped a couple of times on how the Queen songs had melodies, and he pointed out that it’s a shame so much of today’s music DOESN’T. Amen to Mr. Tyler on that.

One more thought on the “popularity contest” issue. Quotes from G and D below:

G: — Idol is the BIGGEST popularity show of them all.
D: — Of course it is! That’s why its ratings remain higher than any of the other copycat shows. It’s the Daddy of singing competitions.

Well… not exactly. I think it’s the Daddy in terms of having devolved into a popularity contest *INSTEAD* of a singing competition. And I find that sad. It makes America seem shallow. :-(

Why can’t we have a talent competition that doesn’t eventually devolve into a popularity contest? Weren’t most of us finished with popularity contests after sixth grade?

If only Jessica could get booted tonight, like she WAS PREVIOUSLY, before the judges intervened, then we could have a ‘PERFECT FIVE” for the first time ever. I agree with what someone else said earlier. This is the most closely proportioned “top six” group ever in AI history. If it gets down to the “Perfect Five” tonight I have no idea who I would want to win. Jessica, to me, just has a very blaise personality and sings nothing that stays with me. Other than last night(because it’s so fresh) I cannot tell you one song she has sung before. BTW, I sure wish they would feed her. She is nothing but skin and bones, and those clothes she is wearing always show he “spiney” legs. She needs to wear long dresses or pants. She looks very unhealthy and sickly to me. If she gets lucky and wins it all, I see her selling CDs to just a very select group of music lovers.

I can’t remember a season in which every one of the top six were so polarizing. Maybe it’s a sigh of the times, with the state of our terribly polarizing partisan politics. Consider that every contestant was picked out of hundreds of thousands, the whittled down to 24 out of over 300, then voted down from 12 to six. The judges hand picked them all. Yet these same judges have clear favorites whom they constantly build up (standing O’s, constant praise), and others they insist are pitchy or lack emotion, or whatever. People, THEY ARE ALL GREAT SINGERS! None of them are pitchy! Yes, Shannon was pitchy, so she made a quick exit. But anyone who says Hollie is pitchy is nit-picking, big-time. Face it, we all have personal favorites in this bunch, for reasons of personality, looks, style or personal taste. But to say Phil can’t sing (he just “growls”) is inane. The kid can sing very well, as they all can. AND HOLLIE IS NOT PITCHY!

Was just reading about RS being sick last night. I thought he looked somewhat pale and weak. Is that why his girlfriend, Julianne Hough, was there? I thought when they showed her on camera, after what Ryan said about her and Phillips, was really funny and enjoyable. I like it when they show off-the-wall stuff like that. BTW, Julianne Hough is Derek Hough’s brother (DWTS) and she has put out some really good country songs. She is indeed a “sexy cutie”. (But she can do better than RS, me for example-JK)

Jenny, I do have to disagree on a minor point. Idol has always been a popularity contest. Simon tried to drive home quite often that it was about more than singing, he would only use the concept of Idol being about singing when it suited him as a point for debate, otherwise he was more than happy to look for the “Idol” not the “singer”.

I cannot jump on this hollie band wagon. I think she is good don’t get me wrong, and cute as a button but she’s sharp…I obviously did not hear the same thing alot of y’all did, I didn’t like her first song and I was cringing when she sang “the climb”. I am NOT a Joshua fan and his first song reminded me of how much his screeching and screaming irritates me, but I must say his second song gave me goosebumps. Phillip was phillip not bad but nothing great, he has a career ahead of him but does not have the voice to be deserving of the top 3 much less the winner. Skylar has shocked me the past few weeks. I hate country, even more I hate Reba/Dolly parton type country but there is no mistaking that girl has some vocal cords and that even if she doesn’t win this competition we will hear from her again. Elise has an amazing voice but I can NOT get past her horrible attitude. I really can’t enjoy her songs because I can’t enjoy her. Jessica is amazing, no matter what she sings, she sings it flawlessly and beautifully. I don’t know that I buy into her sweet innocent act though, because she comes off like a seasoned diva when she sings, but that’s ok because she can pull it off and still be likeable. Just my two cents. After reading all the comments I really do think tonights going to be a big surprise for everyone. Great bunch of singers! No doubt they are all talented and have “Star potential” but my vote for last night’s greatest performances had to be Skylar then Jessica the other 4 are about even and I don’t care really if any of them go home tonight.

I don’t know, JT…. back in the early days, Simon used to harp and harp “this is a singing contest.” Remember? (Though I think he always did look for a combination of image along with the talent, to a point.)

Then, during the Taylor debacle, he seemed to give up. And when Adam didn’t win… the look on Simon’s face said it all.

I think he gave up and realized that he couldn’t fight the popularity contest wave.

Is Cat Deeley on Ryan’s level as a host? I think she is, and it has nothing to do with my crush on her. :-) I tend to like a little more meat on the bone, but Cat is special.

Anyway…Jenny, thanks for finishing my thought on this popularity contest. That’s why I like Sing Off. Everyone on that show SINGS! Sing Off is about true voices and true talent. The best of the best “SINGERS” are on that show. PP wouldn’t make the cut in the worst a capella group.

So Dick……good to see you around. But, what is it about PP that makes you think he can sing. I mean he usually sings in the same key, which is the key of………uhhhmmm…..there’s no key of growl.

That Usher rendition from PP sounded as such. Funny how Ryan talked about how some stars tweeted the show on how much they liked Idol contestants singing their songs. Usher didn’t tweet the show after PP. That kid’s rendition of Usher sounded like making a jazz, club, or rap song out “Friends in Low Places” (Garth Brooks for those who don’t know). Come on….

And I suspect you are right about Phil and Joshua in the bottom 3. As far as the girl, I’d personally put Skylar there… but am guessing it’ll be Elise once again, and I won’t be surprised if she goes home. Though I’d love another guy shocker? Pretty please? Maybe? ;-)

If Phil get’s booted tonight……I’m done voting. It’s a win for me and my fellow P-haters by default. There are a definite 5 that I would like to see get the win over PP.

JT your the first person to make me vocaly laugh on this side of the screen. Well done.

Jenny, you and I are right there together when it comes to Jessica. I cannot deny her talent. She’s a rare breed indeed. But wer’re polar opposites about Skylar. She’s been one of the most consistent of the bunch, and her stage pressence and just pure joy is better then Jessica sometimes. Funny thing is, I actually like her stuff more that isn’t pure country. Well…guess that’s not that funny since I don’t much care for country.

Which brings me to another point. I suspect I’m in the minority on this, but my musical taste rarely has anything to do with me liking a contestant. I don’t care for R&B or Country, but I think Jessica and Skylar are the best. I like all kinds of genres, but if I had to go with one it would be rock. But the thing is, since Im a rock fan, I rarely like any of the rock contestants. It’s like they just don’t compare or something. The only exception is that I loved James Durbin. Still do. I thought he performed great as a guest this year. Anyways, my musical preference is seperated from how well I think someone does.

Skylar and Phillip will be the top 2 at the end. Jessica can sing, but she comes off as too much of a lounge singer. I’m mystified by the judges reactions to Hollie and Joshua. Why do they stand EVERY time Joshua sings?? I don’t think he’s much better than any of the others. And poor Hollie! She sings her heart out and gets nothing but criticism. I’m on the fence with Elise.

who goes home tonight

April 26th, 2012
3:16 pm

Everyone seems to agree that each person did a solid job last night but at this point, who do you think can carry the mantle of American Idol. 1. Phillip – been there, done that for AI, guitar playing dude. 80%
2. Jessica – talent to be a diva. People forget she is just 16. 80%
3. Skylar – Country talent for sure but no Carrie Underwood. 70%
4. Joshua – If this was the 1960’s-1980’s, he would be a lock, but what genre would he fit in? Love his voice but will radio? 65%
6. Hollie – has a pop princess look but sings ballads, bad combination. – 50%
7. Elise – she is the oldest in this group and it shows. A more mature sound suited for touring and eclectic radio, but no pop star. – 45%

Bottom line, since each singer represents such diverse styles, everyone has a puncher’s chance of winning. This maybe a winner by default. The two singers who have the closest styles are Jessica and Hollie but it is obvious who the judges prefer. In fact if the judges had not beaten her up so much, she would have been gone by now.
Everyone thinks Elise will be voted off tonight because she has run her course, but the name of the game is survive and move on, and that is what she finds a way to do. I may even vote for her next week if she makes it just to keep the party going.

We are partly on the same page here, as I’ve always thought she was quite the little performer. Ever since she did the rock song the first week And I do love her joy. Was it you that said “her whole face smiles”?

The weeks she doesn’t twang are the weeks I like her better. She DOES have a big voice under there, and I’ve seen it be impressive when she just. holds. the. note. Through her mouth, not her nose.

It’s the nose. My husband cracked up at me last night… the second she started to honk the country song through her nose, I went “Owwww!” and hid my face.

He pointed out that it seems to be that *style* of country that bothers me. Like Reba. Or that horrid, HORRID lead singer of Sugar-Land. (I saw them for the first time on an awards show, and thought “oh cool, I’ve heard they’re great, I want to watch them…” and OH MY. When she started to yowl and scratch and twang, I really thought it was a joke. 8-O )

Phillip needs to go tonight

April 26th, 2012
3:31 pm

I would like to see Phillip get voted off tonight, he has blown off the competition anyway. Phillip will still do well because he has a style of his own and like Chris Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson, you can be very successful without making it to the Finals on AI.
That would leave Joshua, Jessica, Sklyar, Hollie, and Elise, that would be great drama. The odds would be a female voted off the next week and lets say it is finally Elise. Then we would have Joshua, Jessica, Skylar, and Hollie. If Jessica gets voted off that week, then that would be a slam dunk for a Joshua and Skylar final which would be similar to the Fantasia/Diana final where by default the best singer would win, and in this case it would be Joshua.

Jenifer Nettles is the best female singer I’ve ever seen in person. I used to see her shows back in college before she went country. Her solo album is amzing. And her stuff with Soul Miners Daughter was pretty good too. Jenifer went country to pay the bills, and who can argue that it hasn’t worked? I knew back then that girl was going to be famous one day, and she didn’t dissapoint me. I’m very proud of her. What really bothers me is all the ones who have a problem with country and what they call the “twang thang”(some people naturally sing that way and some people do like it) and those very same people never say anything about hip/hop or rap and all the obscenities and “women-bashing” that goes on in them. I recall also a group on AI a couple weeks back (may have been LMFAO-what’s that mean “laugh my freaking arm off”?) and there were numerous seconds of cutouts throughout the song. Now which is better those types or the country types who are usually patriotic and tell about life as it actually is? Also, those always bashing “twang” haven’t said much about Joshua and his growly voice on the R&B songs. Makes me want to clear my throat the whole time he is doing that!

“Cat”, you have to go back and find the original Ellen Show they were on. I was about rolling in the floor watching those two kids. They are indeed refreshing and so dang funny!

MyPatootie, I’m confused. I can’t stand twangy Country music, so according to your argument I’m not into the patriotic – tell about life how it is music. However, I do like many Toby Keith songs and he tells about life as it actually is, and is a slight bit patriotic. Even though it is true that I don’t say anything about hip/hop or rap, it doesn’t follow that I condone the “woman-bashing”. Sorry, but there are some logic errors in your post

I’d also like to point out that even though I don’t like twang I also don’t like R&B, so I’m no fan of Skylar or Joshua. Therefore, your last sentence is also lost on me. I don’t bash either Skylar or Joshua much because, as I mentioned earlier, I think they are technically gifted singers.

I apologize if it sounded like I was lumping you in with all the country music bashers. Believe it or not most who complain about “twang” are country music haters(Simon Cowell is a good example). I just left Nashville after 13 yrs. (now in SC) and I found that a lot. I still believe if Simon C had had his way, Carrie Underwood would never have won. I recall him being anti-country during that season and he only came around after he was completely outnumbered.
Since you do like some country I guess it’s just the sound of the most prevalent nasal singers that gets on your nerves. Honestly, even though I am big on country, I prefer not to hear too much nasal twang myself. A little bit I can handle, and there are some country performers from the past who most likely would not have been the same without it. That’s funny though, as you mentioned TK, and he is one of my least favorite male country singers. It’s mainly because of a very negative thing he did in Nashville and it’s too long to go into him. He lost all credibility with me over that. Again, I apologize, as you do sound sincere and passionate about what you hear and feel, and that is the important thing. Music is like cars. We all have different likes and dislikes.

The comments have gotten testier as the contestants leave to make it a smaller field. Obviously some like one more than another and as a result, justify their feelings by pointing out faults that they perceive. Be honest, some don’t like country, R&B or Rock and perfect pitch is not necessarily what makes the perfect AI. It’s a popularity contest and no matter how many times you repeat that “someone missed some notes” it’s not going to make anyone switch their vote if they are voting at all.
It usually just starts a never ending argument between people with strong views. Just be happy with “I like what they sang or I didn’t like that”. Making it sound like you are a voice coach or music critic doesn’t make it so.
But that’s just me. lol

Sorry, should say “too long to go into HERE” in last paragraph, not “HIM”. I read over it but missed that one.

I hear where you are coming from MyPatootie.

Even though I like to think of myself as a Country music hater, I’ll listen to Carrie Underwood, Toby Keith, and a few others. My wife and my daughter see to it that I get exposure to Country, heck I’ve bought singles from The Civil Wars and Lady Antebellum in the last year. I tend to avoid what I would consider old style Country (what many may call twangy) and it doesn’t help that I avoid sad or inspirational songs like the plague. I avoid them to the point where I even shy away from “Jesus take the wheel”. Songs about busting up trucks or drinking from Solo Cups, now those are alright.

JD, one somewhat strange thing about JS and SL. They made it big despite the fact they were never really accepted in Nashville. I was there when they first came on the scene and that big split that occurred with the other original female member leaving, caused a lot of people in the music business to take sides(even though some tried not to). From what I hear they still don’t spend anymore time in NV than they have to, and still call Atlanta home. I personally like some of their stuff, and some not so much. At least they are unique!

Patootie, I have been one to talk about “nasal twang”… but there is actually a lot of country music I LOVE. There is even some twang that I like. Though it does tend to be the older style twang if that makes sense… I adore Hank Jr… Waylon & Willie (Luckenbach, Texas and Amanda are two of my favorite songs EVER)… some George Strait (Amarillo By Morning).

Newer country that I love includes Carrie (of course), Martina McBride, Garth Brooks, Mark Wills, Leann Rimes (Blue in particular), Faith Hill, Tim McGraw (Drugs or Jesus and Red Ragtop in particular). And that is just the tip of the iceberg and listed quickly off the top of my head. :-)

I know I complain about nasal twang, but it’s Skylar’s type of twang, specifically, the beginning of that song last night. I don’t know how to better explain it. ???

Oh, and Patsy Cline (does she count as country? Crazy, etc.) Kenny Rogers. Old old old Crystal Gayle songs (anyone remember “Half the Way”?).

Brooks & Dunn (Neon Moon, My Maria). The Dixie Chicks (Wide Open Spaces). Alabama (in high school, owned every album they had).

Ronnie Milsap (Smoky Mountain Rain). And so much Dolly Parton I can’t count it (Two Doors Down, Jolene, Islands In The Stream, and most especially Hard Candy Christmas… another all time fave.)

I can bet that my blog friends never guessed this about me. But I think I have said that I have very wide and varied musical taste.

I’m sad that I will miss the live showing tonight and not see it until tomorrow night. Now I have to avoid the internet for the next 20 hours. Hope PP goes home. He’s checked out and I’m done with him.

I actually had the pleasure to basically have a private show from jenifer nettles before Sugarland. Back in college we helped run and attend this all day diabetes fundraiser thing. You walked through a park, there all kinds of crafts and stuff like that. Well there was a band for entertainment at the end of the event. But, most of the people there were families and young children so they all left before the band played. Well the band was the jenifer nettles band. We knew about this, and how good they would be. So they did a whole show with about 10 to 15 of us watching. Afterwards, they all actually hoped down the stage and hung out with us. It was really cool.

But getting to watch her sing like that up close and personal was just amazing. She sings with some major soul. Back then she kind of reminded me of Amy and Emily from the indigo girls, but she was better with more flavor in her voice. I may be biased from getting such a lucky show… But I’ve seen a lot of big time concerts with some big time female singers, and none of them left the impression on me that jenifer did.

OK, RXDawg, I went to a grassy hillside in 1968 at Duke and saw the Stone Ponies with Linda Ronstadt. Liked her forever after.

That does sound cool. I love the Indigo Girls, so I bet I would’ve liked her too. My husband swears I just got a bad impression from that song. (His exact words were “Are you crazy, she has one of the best voices out there.)

What is her solo album (pre-country) that you liked so much? I tried to google it with no luck. I did find a very pretty song called Rhapsody by Soul Miners Daughter.

And JD, LOVE Linda Ronstadt and Stone Ponies! They were before my time but I used to listen to my parents’ albums.

She was a barefoot teenager then. She became one of the best pure singers of her time. The big song then was “Different Drum”

Different Drum is actually my favorite, and the first one I thought of when you said Stone Ponies. :-)
