Ryan Seacrest almost skipped his very first “Idol” hosting night due to illness. But he hung in there and though he looked a little rough, was a typical pro.

This is arguably the most evenly matched final six in the history of  “Idol.” When I asked the live bloggers who will go home tonight, it was split among all six contestants. I’ve never seen that before.

Overall, this was a curious night. I really enjoyed the Queen covers, perhaps because I absolutely love Queen songs period. The “personal choice” picks were more eclectic and not necessarily more successful though you have to give several of the singers credit for being gutsy and going for unfamiliar tunes. I do find it annoying that the songs are truncated so much and the judges’ (usually useless) commentary so long.

So I have no idea who is going home tomorrow. None. Zip. Nada.

Who do you think will go home Thursday night?

I will just throw out an almost random bottom three because I’m not sure who will be there and given what happened the last two weeks, nobody knows. I think Phil Phillips made a mistake doing an obscure Dave Matthews song so I think he’ll make his first entry into the bottom three.  I am not sure Joshua Ledet’s dull cover of india.arie would draw enough votes either. He’ll join Phil. I am flummoxed which female will join them.

Two weeks ago, Jessica Sanchez had the fewest votes. Her fans last week ensured that would not happen but can they keep her up this time around? Elise Testone and Hollie Cavanagh have skated near the bottom for weeks. I cannot tell who might end up with the fewest votes tomorrow.  I think only Skylar Laine is safe and even that, I’m not saying is a sure thing.  Sigh. Okay, I will say Hollie will end up in the bottom three and Joshua will go home.  I have to pick somebody.

- Jessica’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” – She took on a very difficult song that is six minutes long and was trimmed to less than one-third its normal length. Constantine Maroulis, Michael Johns and Kellie Pickler have also tackled this song. While I’m usually not a fan of hers, I thought she did a solid job given the limitations, even during the heavier rock portion. Grade: A-minus

- Skylar’s “The Show Must Go On”  – She captured the drama and nuance of Freddie Mercury’s classic, providing an impressive amount of control and maturity.  Grade: A

- Joshua’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” – He gives this his patented gospel twist while keeping it loose and fun.  I enjoyed it, even when he starts screaming a bit. Grade: B-plus

- Elise’s “I Want It All”- She seldom excited me. This was a good rendition but didn’t rivet me, though I did enjoy the use of the tambourine. Grade: B-plus.

- Phillip’s “Fat Bottomed Girls”- He lacks the power in his voice to match the chorus but he stayed in key and showed off his impish side with a very impish song.  Grade: B-plus

- Hollie’s “Save Me” – The judges were too rough on her, especially ramblin’ J. Lo. I thought she brought grace, power and confidence to this anthemic Queen classic. I thought she really encapsulated the words. Grade: A

- Jessica’s “Dance With My Father” (Luther Vandross) – This sentimental ode to Vandross’ late father is an odd pick, only because Jessica’s dad is still alive, just going off to Singapore as a military man. As usual, it’s pitch perfect but I didn’t quite buy it. And that wind machine was distracting. Grade: B-plus/B

- Skylar’s “Tattoos on this Town” (Jason Aldean) – She upped the twang to 11 on a so-so Aldean song. Great last note. But unlike a tattoo, this one left no permanent impression on me. Grade: B-plus

- Joshua’s “Ready For Love” (india.arie) This isn’t a case of Joshua himself and his vocals. They were fine. The melody-challenged song itself was a snooze. Yet he gets another standing ovation. Go figure! Grade: B-minus

- Elise’s “Bold as Love” (Jimi Hendrix) – My classic rock canon isn’t quite as great as Elise’s. She seemed stunned when Steven Tyler said this was not a familiar song. This rendition seemed very fussy. She seemed to be “showing off” her vocal skills more than properly interpreting the song. Is she confident or arrogant? Grade: B

- Phil’s “The Stone” (Dave Matthews Band) – I don’t generally like Dave Matthews. This is not one of his big hits and it feels kind of shapeless, even if it has some dramatic elements. I’m not sure it was smart for him to sing Matthews and remind people he is aping the guy. Grade: B

- Hollie’s “The Climb” (Miley Cyrus) This was a low-risk pick on Hollie’s part because she sang it for her audition. But unlike Joshua, Elise and Phil, she picked a familiar song and it works. She hits it on the mark. Grade: A-minus

Jenny again I was not mad at you or anybody. I know you love Hollie and I’m fine with that. I just can’t understand why the fact that I don’t is such an issue. And I wouldn’t be talking about Hollie today at all if it was my choice…which it is and which is why I’m now stopping. No more digs at Hollie from me…no sir! I’ll just leave her out of my reviews altogether because, as with the judges, y’all never seem to notice when I give her praise…which I did for her second song. She did a great job with that.

Everyone seems to forget that Hollie sucked for 95% of the competition. She did well last night with her final song ONLY! She has a nice voice, but she is no match to anyone but Skylar…and Skylar can’t sing. It’s about being consistent on a REGULAR basis, not a song that she auditioned with for American Idol! Think people!!! At any rate I believe that Joshua, Phillip, and Jessica will be the last remaining 3. I think it’s going to be between Jessica and Joshua. Whomever does a better job will win American Idol! :)

Deirdre, I think that Elise is the one who could get the boot with the fewest unhappy people, which is why I think it’s her time.

Sorry to hear about how things are going with your mother.

I also stand by my statements regarding the judges: they are clowns. Even if they have moments where they get it right, they still get it wrong it so many other ways.

Finally, I’m surprised no one has addressed the elephant that was in the room last night: did you see Jennifer Lopez’s booty? HELLO!

Jimmy I. was most likely not shown because his usual time was taken by the guys from Queen giving their advice and info to the contestants. And God forbid that we take away a single minute from the oh so relevant and important “critiques” of the illustrious judges!

Deirdre: I’m right here with you regarding your Mom. Mine will be gone 1 year on May 19th. The last year of her life, when she started slipping away and couldn’t make a lot of sense, and couldn’t take care of herself was Hell, especially when we had to put her into assisted living. But the last 3 months, when she really became helpless and had to go to the “Memory Care” section, was unbearable. As I work, only went once a week to see her, but it was the most miserable hour or two of my life each week.

You have a long, sad road ahead, and I hope your Mom can keep herself (if that makes sense) until the end, because mine couldn’t and I don’t even know who that woman was for the last weeks! My thoughts are with you both.

Deirdre re: 11:41 commnet, I would like to point out that I didn’t jump into the Hollie thing until you brought up my comments from a few weeks ago. I said last week that the judges got better towards her, any vibe I picked up this week is simply a gut feeling and nothing I could really hammer them on as I did their snub from a few weeks ago. That snub turned Hollie into a “save the sweet innocent puppy” movement, which, depending on the next few results shows may be a monster of its own.

JT, re your 11:47 post…I have never felt like you resent my Hollie comments. I have felt that way with other posters. I get what you’re saying and I think you’re right. Sometimes the judges do seem to have it in for Hollie. But I don’t know which is worse, the “having it in for Hollie” or what we’ve witnessed from them the last few weeks…a fear of saying anything negative to her.

Either way, they made this bed, now they have to lie in it and because of their actions we may just have another winner who has trouble staying on pitch. To me, that’s sad.

First few rounds I respected Hollie’s voice, but thought she was a pageant princess who could have used another year of seasoning before trying out. She’s turned me around with her maturation before our eyes as a performer, and the internal toughness to fight through the bazooka launched attacks by the Three Stooges.

Talk about pitchy. the girl is great doing slow music but when it comes to rock Forget it. Talk about favoritism ! Skylar, was #1 Elise #2, Philip #3, Hollie #4, Joshua #5 and Jessica, sorry sweetie tonights shoukd be the end of the road. As far as saves go, there shouldn’t be any sooner or later it gets down to 2 and that’s the way it should be !!!!

This is going to be one of those “Taylor Hicks” years on AI. That guy couldn’t give away concert tickets. The breakout talent is just not there on AI this year. In fact, I’m enjoying “The Voice” more than AI this year, their competition processes seem more lively and compelling than AI’s and they have better talent. I really think Katrina on The Voice has an exceptional voice.

JT, if talking about losing your Mom when you’re young, I agree totally. However, my Mom lived 86 years, and for 85 years she was an active person living on her own for 23 years after my Dad died. Her memory was fading some, and she was a lot slower, but getting along pretty well anyway. An unexpected visit to a hospital, where they gave her the chemical stress test for heart twice in one day, and she came out alarming hateful, violent and pretty darn scary. We were told she’d never be able to live alone again. Something the hospital did to her sent her into total dementia in very short time. She had to go immediately into an assisted living facility, while still functioning somewhat, but her decline was scary fast. She finally lost mobility and spent a couple months telling us she was “ready for this to be over”. The last 3 months I wouldn’t wish on anyone. It, sad to say, was a great relief the day her body finally gave up. Sometimes people just live too long, and my Mom was one of them. I hope that won’t be the case for me.

I just want the judges to acknowledge that Jessica is shaky and flat in her lower register. Yes, she CAN sing, but don’t over hype her. Actually tell her she needs to work on something. I really liked Joshua all through the auditions. He was my favorite guy, but it is the judges who have soured me to him. There has to be SOME criticism. He can’t be perfect every time. For instance, the only time I seem to see him hold a note is when he is screaming that note. It never seems to be a nice, sustained, in tune note. And there are a lot of notes he cuts short. Maybe that’s his style or maybe he just can’t hold that note. No doubt he can sing, but some critiques wouldn’t hurt this year old contestant on a singing competition. Phillip has lost his appeal, kind of like the guy David who did Paula’s Straight Up a couple years back lost his. It’s not entertaining anymore. He is a dime a dozen bar, cover band singer who just happens to be on American Idol. Liked him at the start, but see no progression. Skyler can sing, but she can also scream a lot. She WILL be successful whether she wins or not because of her genre. Elise I sometimes like and sometimes don’t and I’m not sure she will ever command a large audience. When they chose her for the top 24 I didn’t even know who she was. She is a good singer, but so are a lot of people I’ve seen play on the Chicagoland bar scene. I’ve never made it a secret that I like Hollie the best. Last year I remember how bad she was in the audition with her nerves, so when she did so well this year, I was a fan. She has taken an unusual amount of beatings this year from the judges. Their whole vibe changes when she comes up. She has not been perfect, but none of them are, so why so much criticizing of Hollie. There are a couple songs that she hasn’t been that good on, but most of the time she does a really nice job. If they would just judge evenly across the board, their critiques of her wouldn’t seem so harsh, but maybe constructive (if they actually said anything constructive). I almost hope she doesn’t win because of the awful album they’ll make her do. She has shown some toughness and fight though in the eyes of some pretty harsh judgements and that makes her a winner.

I think the poll at the top of this article speaks a lot of truth about the results this week – anybody could be sent home.

I honestly think each contestant had one song highlight and another song misstep.

HIGHLIGHTS

Jessica – “Dance With My Father”
Skylar – “Show Must Go On”
Joshua – “Ready For Love”
Elise – “I Want It All”
Phillip – “Fat Bottomed Girls”
Hollie – “The Climb”

MISSTEP

Jessica – “Bohemian Rhapsody” (It’s just impossible to cut this epic to 2 minutes or less)
Skylar – “Tattoos on This Town” (WAY too country. Overcooked the fried chicken on this one.)
Joshua – “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” (Way overrated. “Runaway Baby” was better.)
Elise – “Bold As Love” (This was just a hot mess. She changed an already tough to recognize song and threw it in the Twilight Zone, never to be recognized again…)
Phillip – “The Stone” (He gets praised for doing DMB covers of well known songs. So why should we be impressed when he actually sings a DMB song? And a lesser known one at that? He’ll regret doing that.)
Hollie – “Save Me” (I actually didn’t think this was a total flop, but it certainly wasn’t anything ground breaking for her. And she more than anyone needs to leave a mark with voters.)

Bottom 3 Prediction – Elise, Hollie, Joshua (though I hope Phillip gets a wake up call and winds up here instead)

Eliminated – Elise

Late lunch and catching up!
Rickster @8:37 – What you said, is the one thing I do love about Skylar. “You can see that she genuinely loves being on the stage. Her whole face smiles.”

And RxDawg @9:05 – yes, I also wonder why, with so many to choose from, it’s not ALWAYS this way. (It should be!) But this is the most closely matched group they’ve EVER had at this point. And one of the most talented, too.

Even though we all personally have a least-favorite or two… I think most of us would admit there’s not a dud in the group.

Jenny

G @9:13 – yes, I have ALWAYS believed Simon left because he couldn’t stand that it had become just a popularity contest. It was written all over his face when Adam lost.

And honestly, I am right with him and it’s the reason that I’ll one day lose interest. (But not this year, not yet anyway.) Oh, and your 9:23 is right on.

Neg, I always love reading your take! We mostly agree, except we’re polar opposite on Jessica (and I’d have Skylar at the bottom this week.) Great take, though! :-)

D, I’d love to see Paula back. Though I do think JLo means well. (She’s just spacey in a different way from “Pauler”, whose spaciness was often caused by Simon’s antics.)

However, JLo does give (in JT’s words) slopping praise for mediocre performances from others, and I wish that would stop. And please, no more standing o’s for Joshua! Funny that Skylar ragged on him about it.

And I did like one thing Steven brought up last night… he harped a couple of times on how the Queen songs had melodies, and he pointed out that it’s a shame so much of today’s music DOESN’T. Amen to Mr. Tyler on that.

One more thought on the “popularity contest” issue. Quotes from G and D below:

G: — Idol is the BIGGEST popularity show of them all.
D: — Of course it is! That’s why its ratings remain higher than any of the other copycat shows. It’s the Daddy of singing competitions.

Well… not exactly. I think it’s the Daddy in terms of having devolved into a popularity contest *INSTEAD* of a singing competition. And I find that sad. It makes America seem shallow. :-(

Why can’t we have a talent competition that doesn’t eventually devolve into a popularity contest? Weren’t most of us finished with popularity contests after sixth grade?

If only Jessica could get booted tonight, like she WAS PREVIOUSLY, before the judges intervened, then we could have a ‘PERFECT FIVE” for the first time ever. I agree with what someone else said earlier. This is the most closely proportioned “top six” group ever in AI history. If it gets down to the “Perfect Five” tonight I have no idea who I would want to win. Jessica, to me, just has a very blaise personality and sings nothing that stays with me. Other than last night(because it’s so fresh) I cannot tell you one song she has sung before. BTW, I sure wish they would feed her. She is nothing but skin and bones, and those clothes she is wearing always show he “spiney” legs. She needs to wear long dresses or pants. She looks very unhealthy and sickly to me. If she gets lucky and wins it all, I see her selling CDs to just a very select group of music lovers.

I can’t remember a season in which every one of the top six were so polarizing. Maybe it’s a sigh of the times, with the state of our terribly polarizing partisan politics. Consider that every contestant was picked out of hundreds of thousands, the whittled down to 24 out of over 300, then voted down from 12 to six. The judges hand picked them all. Yet these same judges have clear favorites whom they constantly build up (standing O’s, constant praise), and others they insist are pitchy or lack emotion, or whatever. People, THEY ARE ALL GREAT SINGERS! None of them are pitchy! Yes, Shannon was pitchy, so she made a quick exit. But anyone who says Hollie is pitchy is nit-picking, big-time. Face it, we all have personal favorites in this bunch, for reasons of personality, looks, style or personal taste. But to say Phil can’t sing (he just “growls”) is inane. The kid can sing very well, as they all can. AND HOLLIE IS NOT PITCHY!

Was just reading about RS being sick last night. I thought he looked somewhat pale and weak. Is that why his girlfriend, Julianne Hough, was there? I thought when they showed her on camera, after what Ryan said about her and Phillips, was really funny and enjoyable. I like it when they show off-the-wall stuff like that. BTW, Julianne Hough is Derek Hough’s brother (DWTS) and she has put out some really good country songs. She is indeed a “sexy cutie”. (But she can do better than RS, me for example-JK)

Jenny, I do have to disagree on a minor point. Idol has always been a popularity contest. Simon tried to drive home quite often that it was about more than singing, he would only use the concept of Idol being about singing when it suited him as a point for debate, otherwise he was more than happy to look for the “Idol” not the “singer”.

I cannot jump on this hollie band wagon. I think she is good don’t get me wrong, and cute as a button but she’s sharp…I obviously did not hear the same thing alot of y’all did, I didn’t like her first song and I was cringing when she sang “the climb”. I am NOT a Joshua fan and his first song reminded me of how much his screeching and screaming irritates me, but I must say his second song gave me goosebumps. Phillip was phillip not bad but nothing great, he has a career ahead of him but does not have the voice to be deserving of the top 3 much less the winner. Skylar has shocked me the past few weeks. I hate country, even more I hate Reba/Dolly parton type country but there is no mistaking that girl has some vocal cords and that even if she doesn’t win this competition we will hear from her again. Elise has an amazing voice but I can NOT get past her horrible attitude. I really can’t enjoy her songs because I can’t enjoy her. Jessica is amazing, no matter what she sings, she sings it flawlessly and beautifully. I don’t know that I buy into her sweet innocent act though, because she comes off like a seasoned diva when she sings, but that’s ok because she can pull it off and still be likeable. Just my two cents. After reading all the comments I really do think tonights going to be a big surprise for everyone. Great bunch of singers! No doubt they are all talented and have “Star potential” but my vote for last night’s greatest performances had to be Skylar then Jessica the other 4 are about even and I don’t care really if any of them go home tonight.

I don’t know, JT…. back in the early days, Simon used to harp and harp “this is a singing contest.” Remember? (Though I think he always did look for a combination of image along with the talent, to a point.)

Then, during the Taylor debacle, he seemed to give up. And when Adam didn’t win… the look on Simon’s face said it all.

I think he gave up and realized that he couldn’t fight the popularity contest wave.

Is Cat Deeley on Ryan’s level as a host? I think she is, and it has nothing to do with my crush on her. :-) I tend to like a little more meat on the bone, but Cat is special.

Anyway…Jenny, thanks for finishing my thought on this popularity contest. That’s why I like Sing Off. Everyone on that show SINGS! Sing Off is about true voices and true talent. The best of the best “SINGERS” are on that show. PP wouldn’t make the cut in the worst a capella group.

So Dick……good to see you around. But, what is it about PP that makes you think he can sing. I mean he usually sings in the same key, which is the key of………uhhhmmm…..there’s no key of growl.

That Usher rendition from PP sounded as such. Funny how Ryan talked about how some stars tweeted the show on how much they liked Idol contestants singing their songs. Usher didn’t tweet the show after PP. That kid’s rendition of Usher sounded like making a jazz, club, or rap song out “Friends in Low Places” (Garth Brooks for those who don’t know). Come on….

Rodney, I’ve been focused on all the posts, but just noticed you added your grades to the blog above.

“Upped the twang to an 11″ – Dang, you are polite. Is that a nice way of saying “honked the song out of her nose? (again… just joking!! :-) :-) I promise I never purposely mean to offend anyone.)

And I suspect you are right about Phil and Joshua in the bottom 3. As far as the girl, I’d personally put Skylar there… but am guessing it’ll be Elise once again, and I won’t be surprised if she goes home. Though I’d love another guy shocker? Pretty please? Maybe? ;-)
