AMERICAN IDOL: Elise Testone performs on AMERICAN IDOL airing Wednesday, April 25 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. CR: Michael Becker / FOX.
Ryan Seacrest almost skipped his very first “Idol” hosting night due to illness. But he hung in there and though he looked a little rough, was a typical pro.
This is arguably the most evenly matched final six in the history of “Idol.” When I asked the live bloggers who will go home tonight, it was split among all six contestants. I’ve never seen that before.
Overall, this was a curious night. I really enjoyed the Queen covers, perhaps because I absolutely love Queen songs period. The “personal choice” picks were more eclectic and not necessarily more successful though you have to give several of the singers credit for being gutsy and going for unfamiliar tunes. I do find it annoying that the songs are truncated so much and the judges’ (usually useless) commentary so long.
So I have no idea who is going home tomorrow. None. Zip. Nada.
I will just throw out an almost random bottom three because I’m not sure who will be there and given what happened the last two weeks, nobody knows. I think Phil Phillips made a mistake doing an obscure Dave Matthews song so I think he’ll make his first entry into the bottom three. I am not sure Joshua Ledet’s dull cover of india.arie would draw enough votes either. He’ll join Phil. I am flummoxed which female will join them.
Two weeks ago, Jessica Sanchez had the fewest votes. Her fans last week ensured that would not happen but can they keep her up this time around? Elise Testone and Hollie Cavanagh have skated near the bottom for weeks. I cannot tell who might end up with the fewest votes tomorrow. I think only Skylar Laine is safe and even that, I’m not saying is a sure thing. Sigh. Okay, I will say Hollie will end up in the bottom three and Joshua will go home. I have to pick somebody.
- Jessica’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” – She took on a very difficult song that is six minutes long and was trimmed to less than one-third its normal length. Constantine Maroulis, Michael Johns and Kellie Pickler have also tackled this song. While I’m usually not a fan of hers, I thought she did a solid job given the limitations, even during the heavier rock portion. Grade: A-minus
- Skylar’s “The Show Must Go On” – She captured the drama and nuance of Freddie Mercury’s classic, providing an impressive amount of control and maturity. Grade: A
- Joshua’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” – He gives this his patented gospel twist while keeping it loose and fun. I enjoyed it, even when he starts screaming a bit. Grade: B-plus
- Elise’s “I Want It All”- She seldom excited me. This was a good rendition but didn’t rivet me, though I did enjoy the use of the tambourine. Grade: B-plus.
- Phillip’s “Fat Bottomed Girls”- He lacks the power in his voice to match the chorus but he stayed in key and showed off his impish side with a very impish song. Grade: B-plus
- Hollie’s “Save Me” – The judges were too rough on her, especially ramblin’ J. Lo. I thought she brought grace, power and confidence to this anthemic Queen classic. I thought she really encapsulated the words. Grade: A
- Jessica’s “Dance With My Father” (Luther Vandross) – This sentimental ode to Vandross’ late father is an odd pick, only because Jessica’s dad is still alive, just going off to Singapore as a military man. As usual, it’s pitch perfect but I didn’t quite buy it. And that wind machine was distracting. Grade: B-plus/B
- Skylar’s “Tattoos on this Town” (Jason Aldean) – She upped the twang to 11 on a so-so Aldean song. Great last note. But unlike a tattoo, this one left no permanent impression on me. Grade: B-plus
- Joshua’s “Ready For Love” (india.arie) This isn’t a case of Joshua himself and his vocals. They were fine. The melody-challenged song itself was a snooze. Yet he gets another standing ovation. Go figure! Grade: B-minus
- Elise’s “Bold as Love” (Jimi Hendrix) – My classic rock canon isn’t quite as great as Elise’s. She seemed stunned when Steven Tyler said this was not a familiar song. This rendition seemed very fussy. She seemed to be “showing off” her vocal skills more than properly interpreting the song. Is she confident or arrogant? Grade: B
- Phil’s “The Stone” (Dave Matthews Band) – I don’t generally like Dave Matthews. This is not one of his big hits and it feels kind of shapeless, even if it has some dramatic elements. I’m not sure it was smart for him to sing Matthews and remind people he is aping the guy. Grade: B
- Hollie’s “The Climb” (Miley Cyrus) This was a low-risk pick on Hollie’s part because she sang it for her audition. But unlike Joshua, Elise and Phil, she picked a familiar song and it works. She hits it on the mark. Grade: A-minus

We’ve seen, in the last few years, that winning is not that important to the Idol contestants’ future success. Idol even uses non-winners in its opening montage. It isn’t that they aren’t proud of the winners and other success stories and it isn’t that they don’t believe that having successful artists come from Idol is important. But first and foremost, they want to put on a show that gets great ratings.

JT, Phil was told by TWO of the judges that he made the wrong song choice. See what I mean by not hearing the negatives on the other singers? Randy disagrees with them and suddenly Phil is getting the opposite advice that was given to Elise…not true. Randy was wrong but the other 2 idiots were right. Phil needs to pick songs that people know………you can’t pick the cherries with your back to the tree!

An intense blog – we are involved, and have our favorites! Glad Deirdre finally came out and said it in plain English: “I don’t like Hollie”…
A few comments; Johnny Fever at 8:04 “Hollie… has gotten by on guile”.
Guile? She’s the least experienced of the Idols, and if anything completely guileLESS.
Someone else said “I think these judges have ruined Idok for me” – I agree. The prospect of watching another season with these three judges is not very enticing.

I totally Despise everything about Joshua onstage. Unlike a few others, I can’t call his catterwalling “singing”! He screams, he screetches, he whines, he cries – its the most irritating voice on Idol since Season 3’s “winner”. When he’s not screaming, the voice wavers so much, sounds like he’s gargling. Please send him home tonight!
Skylar is totally dreadful. Who ever told her that stomping around the stage like she’s putting out forest fires is appealing. And she really needs to see an ENT about her clogged sinuses! The sounds outta her mouth are horrible. She doesn’t have an iota of subtlety – just shouts every word out.
For the above two, I’d rather hear rubber sole shoes squeaking on a basketball court that listen to either of them “sing”.
I hate “Fat Bottomed Girls”, but actually thought Philipx2 did a good job. Re the 2nd song, don’t know anything about Dave Matthews’ music, and seems I really DON’T want to – what a droning, tuneless piece of crap song – agreed 100% with Randy. That said, Px2 sounded ok on it. I did notice he kept putting his hand on the back of his hip – in the kidney area. Poor baby.
Loved when Ryan said Julianne had said, “oh yummy” when Px2 passed her. Funny.
Jessica ok – I’d give her #3 spot. Certainly not as great as Randy raved re song #2.
I loved Hollie – thought she was good on 1st song, fabulous on 2nd – she’s my #1 tonight. Regardless of other comments, I love her voice and find her very appealing.
Elise – ok – a bit raspy for me (and I’m a huge Janis J fan!). Doesn’t deserve to go home this week – that’s reserved for the two screamers.
Seems to me that for the first half of the season, the judges were instructed that Jessica must be the winner, and they were to do everything possible to accomplish this, then suddenly something happened, the tide turned against her, and Joshua is now anointed God on Earth. I expect him to part the LA River, multiply some loaves, and walk on water any day now. Makes me sick when the judges carry on about anyone, my fave or least fave. Not fair to give such totally biased opinions to any contestant. Oh for the olden days of the first 5 or 6 seasons, when all was fair and worked with the judges.

For me, Hollie gave the two performances of the night. Elise, who I normally don’t like, surprised me with “I Want It All”, and I loved Phillip’s second song, “The Stone”, which i’d never heard before.
In order, then:
1. Hollie, “The Climb”
2. Hollie “Save Me”
3. Phillip “The Stone”
4. Elise “I Want it All”
5. Joshua “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”
6. Skylar “The Show Must Go On”
7. Phillip “Fat Bottomed Girls”
8. Joshua “Ready for Love”
9. Elise “Bold for Love”
10. Skylar “Tattoos on This Town”
11. Jessica “Rhapsody”
12. Jessica “Dance With My Father”

Mercedes: Glad Deirdre finally came out and said it in plain English: “I don’t like Hollie”…
Really, I thought I’d made that pretty clear.
To my ears, Hollie is just a couple of steps up from off-key Lee. So far, she’s done maybe 3 songs where she hasn’t hit a bad note. My ears don’t like her voice. For all you Hollie fans out there, I apologize.
But, do you hear me complaining about how many times you tell me you dislike Phil or Jessica or Joshua? Y’all need to develop a thicker skin. It isn’t personal. Not everybody likes Hollie. Not everybody likes Jessica. Not everybody likes Joshua. I’m not sure I understand why you care.

Deirdre, I did point out that it was Steven Tyler, and you have to take into account post show pimping as well, which if you remember was THE beef I had with the judges a few weeks back. However I have thought of a solution to our dilemma because even though I’m not arguing against you regarding Hollie last night, I think I see where the problem is between you and others regarding this matter. Pounding this out on a phone so just a sec…

I put Jessica in the bottom for several reasons. “Bohemian Rhapsody” is a very long song and she’s got, what, 100 seconds to sing it? Not smart choice. The second song, “Dance With My Father” felt calculated, cheesy, saccharine. An elevator song. Didn’t like the song when my father was alive and don’t like it now. So two bad song choices for Jessica.

the real question is: would you buy a ticket to hear these people? Ask the questions that Simon Cowell would ask….Would you download their songs? Would you pay for their performance?
Jessica has a nice enough voice, as does Hollie but the real artists this year are Skylar and Phillip. The rest will fade into oblivion even if they win.

I repeat each week, Joshua does not deserve all the stanidng O’s. He’s good, but not that good. I love Phillip but didn’t like his Queen pick, however, his second song was brilliant. I want to see Phillip and Skyer in the finals. The rest are just so-so, in my opinion, either inconsistent or all their songs sound the same. P.S. I think Phillip was embarrassed about past comments about his little dance, so he didn’t move around much last night. Leave him alone. The dance is just him getting into the music.

Although I believe Elise is at the end of the line, she is not a bad singer, but her style just is not going to have mass appeal. She is in the Macy Gray (who puts out great albums but does not sell well) mode and you either like her or your don’t.
Phillip has this “I don’t care” attitude and I would not be surprised if he is voted off tonight or next week because he is just going to do his thing and say whatever. So it would not bother me if he goes before the top three. (Jessica, Joshua, and Skyler).

Idol could fix the judging by implementing a gymnastics style judging system. If they were clear that they were speaking of technical merit and artistic merit it would provide better critiique.
For instance take Jessica, my favorite, on the Queen song: technically it was a 10 artistically it was a 5 at best. She sang it perfectly, but it was really done wrong. Hello Jennifer talk to her about smiling when you need to smile and being mad when you need to be mad.
So, where does that get us on Hollie? Deirdre, I know you have had issues with the artistic merits of Hollie, yet today you seem to be arguing more regarding the technical aspect. The main focus of the judges regarding her Queen song was on the artistic. I think that is where the disconnect is occurring. The argument seems to be: the judges got it wrong (the judges focus was on the artistic) while your counter argument is more focused on the technical aspect.
Well, as I said this is being typed on a phone, so please excuse me. Just to be up front, Hollie’s Queen song wasn’t my favorite, the judges were correct, but I still got a negative vibe from them. Yes they should have favorites, they are not smart enough to support their favorites with subtlety.

My rankings last night are
1. Hollie – she was awesome on both songs she was flawless! magical
2. Elise she picked the right songs
3. Phil smart choice in songs
4. Joshua. First song was a screamer. Second song was fantastic
5 skylar. She did better with first song. I am not really a country fan though
6 Jessica. First song was bad. Off key and the visual background was terrible with her heads floating around It was over indulgent as Simon would say. Her second was better but not great

Now let’s get to the topic at hand.
I think Joshua proved to everyone that he doesn’t just scream with his second song. What’s the difference between a scream from someone with a rock background vs. the scream of someone with a R&B/gospel background? The answer is genre of music. Don’t use that as a guage of whether he can sing or not just say you don’t prefer his style because there should bo no debate that the boy has talent.
Jessica could vitually be flawless if she knew how to pick her songs. I’m not sure why she hasn’t selected some of the covers she’s done on her youtube channel but at the end of the day…she can sing. I think she is starting to suffer from a lack of personality and emotion just as Hollie but at the end of the day she has far more vocal ability than Hollie could dream of.
Skylar is the epitome of country and as much as I want to like her I do agree with others when they say she is very nasal when she sings.
Elise’s personality is going to be the death of her (if her bad performances don’t get her kicked off first). Her comment last week about her being criticized more because she’s the oldest is a poor excuse for rising to the challenge. If that were true, how can you blame them for expecting more from someone who has been doing this nearly twice as long as the other contestants. She reminds me of Ruben Studdard after perfomances but in a bad way. As soon as she finishes a song it’s like the life has been sucked out of her….I can only imagine how drainging this could be but don’t let that read all over your face.
Phil is simply a performer. I love him and always has since he did “Thriller” during the auditions, although I must admit that he doesn’t have much of a voice (but neither does a lot of artists these days so he should be fine in the industry). There’s no doubt that he knows who he is and makes no apologies about it.

I am fully aware that I just can’t stand them, but it is not in my spectrum of understanding to see how anyone, anyone, could actually believe that Joshua and Skylar are “good singers”. Both their voices just cause actual pain to my ears, and if I had to hear them more than the few seconds per song they’re allotted, I would probably develop a migrane and throw up. Not kidding – their voices are so unpleasant to my ears. I’m not claiming to be a musical expert, but I sure can recognize pain. Grew up in a family with a musician father who developed some of the big southern singers of the time, and have rarely heard such c0ckamamie being called singing seriously.

Hollie is this year’s Haley. Those who love her are blown away, those who don’t think she’s the absolute worst, and the judges uniquely single her out for negative comments. She’s the underdog coming out of oblivion to threaten the establishment’s choices, and I, for one, love it. Polarization makes great theater!!

Sam-A, I have to disagree regarding Joshua and Skylar. They are my least favorites, but I have to admit that they are technically very good singers. They also know how to connect, and I can see where people who are into those types of music would like them. However, I just don’t like their type of music, at all. It’s kind of like an opera singer, they might be technically the best singer in the world, but that doesn’t mean I want to listen to more than 5 seconds of it.
So in the end I agree, yet disagree.
Neg: I think Elise is this years Haley, at least from a musical standpoint. She was also assumed by many as someone who would depart very early, yet she is still here.

LA@ 10:20am had a lot of accurate things, even about Phil. However, I still fail to understand what’s so “entertaining” about the kid. He doesn’t work a stage as well as an “Elise”, he can’t compete vocally with any of the remaining contestants, and we all know he has no rythym. He’s just a WGWG. Elise annoys me to. She continues to do things that she thinks sounds good, but they don’t. She is very unproffesional…which is odd since she has the most experience. With some intense coaching, she has potential, but I think she’s been doing it too long to really change now. Anyways, you can go into any dive bar in America and see an Elise in there. She’s absolutely nothing special and verges on below average for me.
I also think shes wrong to persue rock. It doesn’t seem to really fit her, although she tries to force it. I don’t know what her style should be, probaly coffee house style, folk, smooth jazz, something along those lines.

Joshua is very consistent and he was the best performer last night. He is ALWAYS good and he ALWAYS received a standing ovation from the judges and audience! Hollie was good last night, but it took her 12 weeks just to get that good. She isn’t consistent. I voted only for Joshua. Jessica is usually good, but she was not good for her first song. Skylar or Hollie should go home tonight. Hollie should have went home a long time ago. She has a nice voice, but she was only good twice since the competition starte. Too little – too late for Hollie! Either Hollie or Skylar will go home tonight! Phillip Phillips is really good. I like him, but Joshua was better! Joshua has proven that he can sing any type of music well! I love him. Actually all of the Idols this year is much better singers…true singers than the people that are dropping albums now! Joshua’s was an interesting take though i thought parts he overdid it vocally…. knowing how difficult TSMGO is to sing and knowing the background on that… Freddie’s soaring vocal and determination to get that recorded so close to his passing I give Skylar kudos for doing that song justice…tonight its the official touring band, i will watch that… i hope since Queen and Adam are doing 3 shows together they may sneak a surprise in… one can only hope my soul is painted like the wings of butterflies………………………… *shudders* cheers everyone!

JT – While I see similarities between Elise and Haley in musical taste and style, they are very different in personality, age and life experience. Hollie is the one who was discounted as fodder from the start, but has now gathered momentum and polarization as we get deeper into the competition. Also, Hollie sang RITD in Top 7 this year just like Haley sang RITD Top 7 last year. Both were catapulted from that performance, and I see a similar arc forming. Finally, watching Hollie get singly crucified by the judges after strong performances is SO reminiscent of Haley’s treatment last season.

Re Jimmy’s non-existant mentoring sessions last night: I think they used that time for the Queen medley.

As I said before, whatever happens tonight, there will be a lot of unhappy people. This group is the most divisive(as in fan favorites) I have ever seen on Idol.
