Some of the songs could make for an interesting show. I’ve already written how unhappy I am about some of the song choices, now I’ll just wait and see how it goes.

I just can’t match any of the Queen songs with who would be able to do them justice, except for Elise…maybe.
Skylar could perform Fat Bottom Girls and Elise could probably sing Somebody to Love?
They will all be out of any “comfort zone”…But I agree, it will be an “interesting” show. I just hope it does not make us cringe!
Maybe Phillip could do something with Under Pressure. I read on the American Idol site, they only have thirteen songs to choose from.

Instead of doing Queen, whiched they have done before, I would have liked them to do Super Tramp. Similar, but different.

There is not an artist that comes close to Freddie Mercury, although Adam Lambert really does his music justice.
As far as Phillip, he has not performed any Dave Matthews songs.

ok seriously.. Elise is sooooo good. If i could choose a persons voice to sound like it would be hers. I want to hear her without a band and screaming!! I don’t understand the judges. They are the worst. I know the show is fixed when they cut up Elise and praise Phil for a Usher cover. The fact is that if they had never herd of Dave Mathews they would have found his rendition terrible. He did nothing with it and it went nowhere. The only way any of his performances are tolerable is because in our heads we compare them to the genius that is Dave Mathews!!! Phil is so cute and sweet and deserves credit where credit is due. He can play an instrument and sing which is more than most but the idol team sets him up every week to rip off Dave. Stop with the sax and musical arrangements and please stop saying he is original.

Jessica on Bohemian Rhapsody – of course she would try to tackle one of the most challenging songs ever written. Cause she wants to impress us. Well guess what Jess? The beauty of Rhapsody is the raw passion and subtelty. Although I move that this song should never be done on the show by anyone ever simply for the fact that you can’t cut the song down to 2 minutes. That song needs all 5 minutes to tell the story.

I find it amazing how NOW the judges are tooting Skylar’s age. So many accolades were given to Jessica’s voice and her being only 16. Now it’s Skylar’s turn. WOW. Also, the judges are NOW tooting how Skylar “connects” with the song (unlike Jessica). The Judges are full of crap and the biggest flip floppers since Mitt Romney.
Joshua did good. The song fit him.
Elise did good. WTH is STyler talking about they’ve “been waiting for her to find her element with the right song?” Did they forget her performance two weeks ago where she rocked the house??

It is now clear the judges do not know how to use the skill of “The Standing O.” Therefore I propose all judges wear sycned up shock collars so as to train them.

A standing O too many times in a row is like a ‘kiss of death’. If a fan sees a standing O being given by judges too somebody that is not their ‘idol’ … the hater factor is stoked. This usually results in a torrent of hate posts … which can work against the idol gifted with the standing O.
Jessica was a victim of that IMO (nearly eliminated). Joshua is going to be the second casualty.

The judges love Jessica and Joshua and only give them praise becuase they want them in the finale. Hollie sang with as much passion as Jessica but they tear her down. Elise deserved the standing O; not Joshua. So unfair of the judges because they could give all the contestants more confidence by judging impartially and letting their true colors shine without biased teardowns. Agree with Jon C’s rankings

For the first time, I actually liked Elise’s performance. Entertaining, and she sang like she meant it rather than putting on a false persona. As for Phil – though as a person he is great, I am finally tired of him. Hey, ya’ll bloggers out there! OOOOOHHHH — Jessican is sounding nice right now. Remember back many years ago when they would not allow the singers to adjust the songs to fit them? You did not have the option of making something country or soul. It wrecked a lot of singers. Now, they let you modify the tune. Also, why doesn’t anyone ever forget the lyrics like they did in the first few years?

@ Jon C – Like I said, Standing O’s in this competition is a double edged blade. It cuts both ways … and cuts deep either way.
The standing O is the judge’s personal expression of their approval and admiration. If they believe that Joshua’s past performance all deserved standing O’s, then that is their subjective view. Personally, I have yet to see any performance of Joshua with any kind of glaring technical fault. They’re aways so well executed. SO … I cannot make any justifiable criticism of the judges on this Standing O issue.
A question I would throw to everybody here is … honestly, isn’t Joshua REALLY the best singer in this competition if you do away with all the other qualities (the cute factor, personality, physical packaging)?

Perhaps it’s me, but for JLo to say “there WILL be a time and place” where he (Phil2x) can sing the way he wants to was a telltale sign. Watchers listen to what these keystone judges are saying and it sways the votes. I would buy a Phil2x CD.

Jo-Jo, thanks for posting! Well said. I ADORE Joshua. He is so natural, just sings his soul out w/o even trying. And what fun to watch, too! (And I am in no way a gospel fan…!) Just like Skylar, she just belts it out w/o thinking. Passion! Maybe that’s what rubs me the wrong way about Jessica and Holly; they are a little too studied.

Elvis,
You need to listen to Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett and David Ruffin of The Temptations and tell me that they are bad. Joshua Ledet is a true talent. His voice is fashioned after these GREAT singers—legends. Just because you don’t like the style, respect it. He hits notes (has a bigger range) and has control with more power than many of the others left in the competition (eg., Phil Phillips). The vocal runs, performance, etc. It amazes me that people who like rock call the gospel singers shouty and the people who like gospel call the rock singers tinny and screechy. They are both power singing but in different ways.

I like Hollie’s voice the best and enjoy listening to her. I like the sound quality of Elise, but not always what she does. Skylar is just plain country which will get her far in life. Phil will get a record deal, whether I like him or not, but he is not the best on this show. Jessica just annoys me. She has no low register and sounds bad when she does it, but her upper register is great. Joshua is good right up until he starts screaming and that is just too much for me. I am really getting sick of Randy standing up and forceing Steven and Jennifer to stand up too. Every week, every song from Joshua gets a standing O from Randy. RRK – “Why are the judges head over heals for Joshua? I just don’t get it? Am I alone in this?”
The reason is because the marketing group for American Idol are the same group that are doing the publicity for President Obama. The goal, to get as many black people on TV as possible…and if one can win Idol, that’s a lot of millions getting a positive impression. It’s politics unfortunately RRK.

Judging from the range of comments that we weren’t all watching the same show. I think there were a lot of wrong song choices tonight, but everyone sounded pretty well considering. Elise picked too wrong songs, but the first was okay despite that. I look for her to go home this week.
Skylar had two very good performances. Jessica did well with both, but her second choice was beautiful.
Hollie finally nailed one. I hope it was enough to keep her another week.
Phillip, (just shaking my head back and forth). I would never buy a song of his. Glad the bio piece made him out to be the lazy slob he really is.
Jacob didn’t wow me tonight, but I enjoyed them both. I went on iTunes hoping to find his version of Runaway Baby from a few weeks ago. Bummed that it wasn’t. I’d not heard Bruno Mars version so I listened to it and preferred Jacob’s! I listened to clips of his other songs without visuals to distract me. I am now 100% a Jacob fan.
Not sure about the judges pulling for him to win because of the color of his skin. I don’t care if he is purple, the boy is AMAZING. I would like to see a girl win again someday, so if Skylar or Jessica takes the title I won’t be too disappointed.

WOW, now this is the biggest crap of nonsense I’ve read in a very long time. The “marketing group” seems to be geared toward getting President Obama out of office. And, don’t you think it’s time to get more black people on TV, and I don’t mean dumb shows like The Browns (JMO). White sitcoms, night time shows like Conan, Jay Leno, etc, run the gamut. The show “Friends” was a great show, but so was “Living Single.” Which show received the most kudos. White fans raved for Friends, while the black sector raved for BOTH shows.

And if you care to elaborate on the rest of your comment please do so. It lacks in making any sense. I also find it hard to believe that my statement is crap, especially when it’s a fact that the marketing team for America Idol is the same as Obama’s marketing team.

Ouch. Listening to Hollie’s 2nd song. Missing the key on most notes.

Skippy – I’m voting for Hollie because I like her the best. she did miss on some notes on her first song tonight, but the Queen songs as a whole were not that great. The Climb she just killed and she killed the Adele song last week. To me she has the best voice, but has unfairly gotten dumped on while other singers who have missed on pitch numerous times and sounds flat at other times (Jessica) have not received enough criticism. I haven’t voted since Carrie Underwood, but learned my lesson about that with Pia last year. Now, I have someone who I enjoy and will give her my votes. Voting for your favorite is not missing the point, but being told who to vote for by the judges is.

Point taken, bknsty14. I haven’t voted for anyone, and continue to take a stance that I have no favorite…ok, that’s a lie…Elise has emerged as my favorite (but I still am not compelled to vote for her). I agree that is seems like Hollie is singled out, but I think the judges generally get it right, and have from season one. There are some exceptions. I thought Hollie really made a great comeback last week, but fell back into the same ol’ pitch problems again this week. Jessica, too, is prone to being ever so slightly off on some notes. I honestly am not sure who has the best voice. It occurs to me that are there are probably 10,000 better singers in this country than have tried out for American Idol or any other talent show. They are doctors, lawyers, teachers, vagrants, etc……

Sounds like the judges have already made up their minds about who will win American Idol.

Im sick of Joshua screaming like a little girl, if he wins, the music industry will have officially gone down the toilet. Phillip is the only original artist in the competition.

Jon C – your list is way off. Elise should be on the bottom, Jessica, Josh, Skylar all did better than she did. Hollie should be stay up top after her last song. I don’t get the Elise thing, you could hear her mistakes, especially in her first song. The judges even commented on her not doing well.

I would like someone to tell me why the Judges only stand up for Joshua when they highly praise some of the others. Everyone loved Skylar last night buy they did not stand for her. My feeling is Joshua is a great church singer but really not an American Idol. What’s with all the over the top praise, are the Judges being paid off.

The comments have gotten testier as the contestants leave to make it a smaller field. Obviously some like one more than another and as a result, justify their feelings by pointing out faults that they perceive. Be honest, some don’t like country, R&B or Rock and perfect pitch is not necessarily what makes the perfect AI. It’s a popularity contest and no matter how many times you repeat that “someone missed some notes” it’s not going to make anyone switch there vote if they are voting at all.
It usually just starts a never ending argument between people with strong views. Just be happy with “I like what they sang or I didn’t like that”. Making it sound like you are a voice coach or music critic doesn’t make it so.
But that’s just me. lol
