It seems at least once a year, 790/The Zone fiddles with its lineup. Management can’t seem to help itself.
Starting April 30, “Mayhem in the A.M.” returns to a 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. time slot, the longest morning show in town with that extra hour from 10 to 11 a.m.
Mike Bell and David Archer move up an hour to 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. And John Michaels‘ “Football Night in America” will run from 6 p.m. to 8 pm. instead of 7 p.m to 9 p.m. (Yes, there is an appetite in Atlanta for football talk 12 months out of the year.)
“I’m happy with it,” Bell texted me. “Tough for Archer. He’ll be stuck in traffic on the way home. Now I get to games on time… or hit happy hour earlier.”
So what does that mean for Tony Barnhart & Wes Durham, as well as the 2 Live Stews?
Good question. The boss, Andrew Saltzman, told me today that he is not ready to reveal the details for what will become an 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. show. He hopes to square things away in the next day or two, presumably over contractual issues. I’ll either update this entry or create a new one depending on how the new mid-day show looks. “We have a lot of great talent,” Saltzman said. “It’s a question of how to utilize that talent.”
Barnhart & Durham, who have been on from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., have been getting the strongest ratings for the station. But they are contractually allowed to take two months off in May and June since the pair of football experts work long hours during the other ten months with other non-Zone obligations. Durham does radio play by play for several Georgia Tech sports teams. Barnhart travels to New York during the college football season to do commentary for CBS Sports. I reached out to Barnhart, who deferred questions to his bosses.
So the Zone, based on what I’ve heard, may blend the Stews in with occasional appearances by Barnhart and Durham and perhaps other members of the Zone lineup. Whatever it is, it’s clearly another sign the Stews are no longer the kings of the station.
For a time, the 2 Live Stews were hot, hot, hot. Their ratings were through the roof. They signed a syndication deal. They were regulars on ESPN. Then the syndication deal went away last summer and the Zone cut the Stews from three hours to two. A few months ago, the new program director Bob Richards asked them to tone down the sound effects and some of their shtick.
I called Doug Stewart to get some insight, but he demurred, saying he was about to go into a meeting and asked me to try again at 4 p.m. His agent declined to comment, too.
No matter what, don’t get too wedded to the revised schedule. It will probably change again in a few months.
680/The Fan has been beating the Zone during most time slots, especially late afternoons, where Chuck Oliver and Matt Chernoff has been drawing more listeners than Archer and Bell on the Zone.

When you can’t get it right, you keep trying until you do.
They overutilize underskilled talent and underutilize the really good guys at the station. Chris and Nick are and have been two of the best 790 has to offer, which is why Steak ties himself to them. They would do Mayhem on their own.
The college football show is perfect for this city, as rabid a college football fanbase there is in Atlanta (and not just for the hometown teams). Not sure changing this show should be part of the changes.
The Stews are the Stews, love them or hate them. I thought their show was great before it went national. I think that threw the vibe of their show off. Not sure that they have ever (or will) get it back. Wish they would, because when they were on, they were it.
Bell and Archer are good too. And they have the upper hand on the 680 afternoon show.
They’ve got the talent (with just a couple of exceptions) but never seem to put it together.

I thought Steak said this morning on “Mayhem” that “The Stews” would be doing 11-2. When I heard the new lineup it sounded like it was just temporary until Barnhart & Durham returned for their “regular season”.

Les, you are right, Chris and Nick have always been the superior talent at 790. 790 was the best when those 2 had their own show in the afternoons. Other than that, not much good to say about 790, all shows are superior, I only listen to Wes and Tony when 680 goes syndicated, because I never listen to sportstalk that isn’t local. While Perry and Chuck are my 2 favorites on 680, I like the entire line up.

I won two tickets the other day off the show and it was the first time I’ve ever tried to win anything. I was SOOO Stoked. What did I get?????? The ART OF GOLF at the High Museum. I can’t even give the damn things away. I’ve went to everyone here at work trying to ask them to take it and they laugh at me. I was hoping for something cool to take my son or daughter to like a Braves game or Hawks game or anything close to that. I still love the show but my luck sucks..LOL

I had an issue with Steaky back when he let AJ Cannon go. I told him he was crazy and he ripped me a couple of new ones. (Guess that’s why he’s in radio and I’m not
) So, any show with him grates on my nerves. I’ve tried liking him. I just can’t. Makes it difficult to listen to Chris and Nick.
While he had all the right in the world object to me telling him how to do his job (and a decade+ later, he’s still working and AJ has been hard pressed to stick around anywhere), there are ways to do it without alienating a customer.
I manage a team and I have had customers call and complain when I let go their favorite tech. But if I pulled what he did to me, I would have been the next out the door.
But to me, he equates to Leo on 680 as far as holding back the conversation on most sport subjects. And he doesn’t have the sports cache that Leo does. I listen to sports talk for sports, not for stories about the Palm or the stripclub. (Can’t listen in the afternoons with my kids in the car)

Thanks for the update Roho. I asked you about the Stews a couple of weeks ago, when both of the brothers were off the air for a week.
Bob Richards has been the core reason of why the Stews show has taken a stumble. The “kinder and gentler” Stews does not work for their long time fan base, and it WILL NOT help them gain new listeners. Bring back the old Stews and the numbers should improve. Bob Richards is not doing 790 a good service by crippling the Stews.

Not everyone in atlanta is some big fat Bubba that loves college football 24/7 365 days a year. I think they are oversaturating this town with it. I like it, but at a certain point its overkill. There are other sports, MMA, basketball, baseball, NFL that don’t get enough attention because we are friggin talking about Auburn football on a Tuesday in April

Wonder if the line up change has anything to do with the upcoming translator signal at 94.5? I hate that the 2 live stews will end up gone at the end of this. They used to be pretty entertaining and interested in sports, but then it seemed like the after the national deal they argued just to argue and make fake drama.

Several issues with the Fan. You cannot get a clear signal unless you’re inside of I-285. Once you head up GA 400, they are useless. Why they can’t amp up their signal is a mystery.
Secondly, the Stews are brutal. Let’s face it. Unless you are African-American, you really can’t understand them. That’s not dialect either. It’s schtick, it’s comments, it’s the whole bit.
Lastly, but most importantly, their problem is Shapiro. He is HORRIBLE. Didn’t Daddy buy him the radio station? I suppose he’s not going anywhere, but he is so bad that you can’t enjoy Dimino and Cellini. Those two are the best, and I wish they (without Steaky) would go back to afternoon drivetime.

Interesting. I’ve always felt that Mayhem in the AM is far superior to the Rude Awakening. Mayhem has 3 guys that can talk sports compared to 1 guy that can semi-talk sports in Laurentino. Plus, there is more of a guy-vibe to it. Rude Awakening reminds me more of a women’s morning talk show sometimes. The noon hour is a toss up for me. I really don’t like Buck and Kincaid secondary to their uninteresting and abrasive (Kincaid – at times) personalities. Barnhardt and Durham are probably a bit better, but still not super appealing to me, as a late 20-something. In the afternoon, Archer and Bell are great but Chuck and Chernoff are really great too. I find myself switching back and forth between the two.

That is their problem; their voices are too similar and its like being stuck in a broken elevator with three obnoxious know-it-alls. Bottom line is this, if you like hearing personalities actually talking Atlanta sports and are fans of the Atlanta sports teams, then 790 is the way to go. If you like hearing about out of state sports teams, then 680 is the way to go. I have never listened to a station that pimps out more about other sport cities than 680. It is embarrassing to hear Kincaid have a Braves official on and then brag about his Phillies. Shameful. 680 has no good personality except Chernoff. Chuck is a unemployed perverted ex-teacher who really is lucky Chernoff allows him on his coattails.

As a Zone listener, I wish they could find a lineup and stick with it.
The choice is obvious in the mornings. 680’s morning show is horrendous. 4 people who are uninformed about sports and aren’t entertaining, one of which is a woman. Nuff said. Cellini and Dimino do a great job and always have. They have great chemistry. As far as Steak, I could take him or leave him.
Buck is bland and Kincade is an arrogant Philly homer, but from 1-3 its either B&K or the Stews. That means Ipod time.
I have always liked C&C together, but in the afternoons I have found myself tuning in exclusively to Arch and Bell. I find them to be funnier and they play off each other very well.
790 has the clear upper hand in the mornings and with Barnhart and Durham. Nobody wants to listen during the B&K/Stews time slot. The afternoons could probably go either way. John Michaels does a pretty nice job. He could do well if paired with Hans during the Stews time slot once they are gone. 790 just has to find a consistent lineup.

College football is sooo over-rated too..
The only game in a state that has no Pro franchises.
Just put the best athletes on defense, and nibble on offense,

Simply put 680 the fan is better than 790. I tried to give 790 a shot several times especially when David Pollack was there but overall, the station is terrible.
680 the fan is far better and have better personalities and more engaging with their listeners. 790 has a shot by putting their best team against Buck and Kincade. Buck and Kincade are terrible. They try to plan the good guy / bad guy duo but it just doesn’t work. You got a small town personality in Buck (from Valdosta) and Big Philly personality in Kincade. Not a good match.
Chuck and Chernoff are the best.

I prefer 790, the only time i listen to 680 is to listen to Cowturd. All local sports is just too much. I remember a few years ago one of the complaints was the Stews only talked football and basketball, well it seems that the guys at 10 are only on to talk football, go figure!!
Beau should just retire, same and Leo Mazzone.
Call me a chavunist but women should never be a host for a sports talk show, doing updates or some comments, yes, hosting no!! Example Amy Lawrence on ESPN, just damn! just have to turn to something else.
The new program manager at 790 must be cheap, sometimes on Sundays during the 7-10 am show commercials are running at the time the host is talking, just bush league, mix in an engineer for peaks sake!!
Lastly, why in the world would you repeat the falcons radio games a week later during a time when people want to hear sports, Sunday Morning, after college games were played Saturday night, and the NFL has upcoming games. I want to hear either a local show or national show discussing last night games or the NFL games. Repeating last week broadcast is just small town, this is Atlanta a large market..
Oh yeah, i really don’t listen that much to the stews anymore, although i wish them well and there is a market in this city for diversity, i just can’t stand Ryan yelling and screaming and playing radio.

I used to be a loyal 790 listener about a dozen years ago, but that was because they had the best sports-talk radio show in Atlanta history — The Bottom Line, afternoon drive time show, with Chris Dimino and Nick Cellini. However, over the past 4 or 5 years, I have gradually switched over to 680 The Fan, and now I listen to them exclusively. The reasons? Their pairings have had a lot of stability; they have the most interesting guests; they focus heavily on the local sports scene; they have segments that allow listeners to call in and participate; they carry most of the local teams that I want to hear; and they seem more focused on having a real SHOW than a bunch of “look at me” crap and shtick that gets old in 5 minutes.
790 lost me when they tied themselves to the god-awful, rude, way-too-ethnic, childish antics of the Stews… those guys are horrible. I wouldn’t let them have a show on a country station in rural Iowa, much less a top-10 radio market like Atlanta. They are small-minded, ignorant, offensive, and ENTIRELY too obnoxious, yet 790 catered to them every step of the way. The Mayhem in the A.M. show is good EXCEPT for Steak — kick him off and I’d listen much more often. Meanwhile, the Rude Awakening at 680 is a lot more fun and enjoyable; while Buck and Kincade still don’t sound terribly smooth some days, they do have some lively interactions with callers; and Chuck and Chernoff are now BAR NONE the best sports talk show in Atlanta — great humor, quick-witted, good guests, intense sports discussions, and good fan interaction.
I respect Wes Durham and David Archer immensely, but they are not enough to draw me to the fickle 790. And their signal is WORSE than 680s, and they don’t have an FM option like 93.7. For my money, I much prefer 680 these days. I have won Braves and Thrashers tickets from there; I have met them out at several remotes and had a great time; and the content of the shows is far superior to 3 Yankees rambling on about the Celtics and Knicks for 5 hours every morning, or two jack-wagons screaming “Ahh-ight ahh-ight ahh-ight’ to callers in the afternoon. Please, Ryan Stewart, dial it down… you played a couple of years in the NFL, you weren’t a friggin’ Hall of Famer or Super Bowl champ. Get over yourself.
I patronize the advertisers on 680 regularly, and I appreciate the way they respond to their audience… 790 management and much of its on-air folks have their collective head up their behinds. Good luck catching up to Atlanta’s real sports station, 680 The Fan.

Buck: “Weelll, Joohn, we’ll get back to tawkin’ about them Gooorgia Buuuullldaaaaawgs in just a second, but what do you think about the shakeup over there at 790 the Zooone?”
Kinkaid: “Are you kidding me? Are you freakin’ KIDDING me? Buck, why are we talking about this? Outside of Phillie, we here at 680 The Fan are the only station even worth discussing, no questions asked.”
Steak: “I don’t mean to interrupt but… I mean… Have you been to Solomon… I mean I rarely finish a sent… I’m so busy thinking of the next thing I’m going to… Did I tell you where you can get a good deal on fine jewelry?”
Rude: “Well, there is only one thing that a man could want to buy jewelry for, and that is to enhance the opportunity to satisfy the male libido’s urge for copulation. Did that sound controversial enough? I like to use fancy words to describe the freudian aspects of sports since I haven’t achieved my dream of going to Sirius radio so I can be like Howard Stern and talk about sex all the time, albeit in a more intellectual-sounding manner. PENIS.”
Bell: “HEY NOW! AHAHAHA! NOW YOU’RE TALKING MY LANGUAGE! WE’RE GONNA HEAD OVER TO THE CHEETAH WHEN THIS IS OVER, RIGHT?! AHAHA!”
Stews: “SIR, we dawgs are gonna go over dere and sniff out some poodles, sir! All right, all right, all right!”
Chernoff: “Not me. I’m gonna sit here and fantasize about Chuck’s interest in our new 19 year-old intern instead of talking about sports all day. I believe they are officially going steady because I actually saw them talking at lunch. Don’t tell anyone but I’m totally jealous and that’s why I obsess over Chuck’s single lifestyle so much.”
Chuck: ” We are NOT dating, Matt. She didn’t even go to Auburn. I could never spend time with anyone who couldn’t name every player that was on Auburn’s third-string offensive line in 1985. Go ahead, ask me. I can name what high school each one of them were drafted from, too.”
Laurentino: “Can we change the subject? Regional sports talk doesn’t interest me. I’m arbitrarily a BIG FAN of of USC, the Steelers and the METS, even though they have absolutely nothing in common and I apparently have no roots or real ties to any of them. Don’t you think my random allegiances make me cool?”
Leo: “I’ll tell you what’s COOL. It’s the way Tommy used to locate that fastball on the outside corner. I mean, look, the Braves are going to be fine. When I was coaching them we never let our heads hang down. The only thing that was ever hung was Wohler’s one mistake to Leyritz. Come to think of it, I spent a lot of time in the locker room, and that’s not the only thing that was hung. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Dimino: “It’s hard to soar like an eagle in a flock of turkeys.”
Cellini: “You got that right.”

The Stews are one of the best things going at that station. They consistently get the big interviews and have the best interaction with the callers. Over the top? Yes! Come on – it’s called a radio “SHOW”, remember?
Want a great lineup – here you go:
“Mayhem”: Chris, Nick, Steak” 6-10am. Can’t loose with Chris and Nick…Need Steak too…but more so to hold it together and moderate. Chris and Nick are probably the best sports talk guys in ATL.
“Tony Barnhart & Wes Durham” 10am – 2pm Tony and Wes are both informative and entertaining. They would handle the lunch ride hands down. Arguably this is the best show of the day..not my favorite but when you’ve been forced all you life to “enjoy the ice cream the most people like” you get a feel for what’s good to most people.
“The Stews with John Michaels” 2pm – 6pm OK, so I’m African American (just found out a few years ago – was Black until I got the news……hmmmm….folks back home in Alabama been calling me the same thing since 1600’s…at least they are consistent!!! But I digress…lol!)…My point is that John can culturally fit in with the Stews and ATL’s demographics creates an appetite for the Stews. Creates a fun show to ride home to after work. John Michaels from 2-3 and from 5-6 could ease in listeners who may not normally give them a chance.
Anthing with Chris D – interview, pregame ATL Braves talk, etc…6-7pm or until Braves game begins on game day.
In my universe, Archer and Bell don’t have a show. I think anything with Bell in it is generally corny/immature. Kinda like watching an American Pie movie – same jokes.
Regardless, anything (including Bell) is still better than anything on 680…680 The Fan just has a feel to it that doesn’t sit right with me. So much so until I’m going to follow 680 the Fan even after the police tell me to not do so! I think they have a hoodie…sounds like they have a white sheet hoodie. Yes, this is inflammatory…yes, this is the internet, yes, this comment was over the top! Yes, I care about your responses….errrrrr…….mmmmmmm…OK, you got me…I don’t give a *&%^#$! LOL!

Wanna fix 790? Do this.
Get Steak off the air.
The Stews are the worst thing I’ve ever heard on radio, they need to go.
Morning Drive = Nick and Chris
Mid-Day = Wes and Tony (Fantastic Show)
Evening Drive = Mike & Dave
680 is awful except for Matt & Chuck overall.
I can’t even listen to The Rude Awakening, Leo should have never been give a broadcasting gig.
Buck & Kinkade are a serious snooze.
Matt & Chuck are pretty good, but I can only listen for so long until Matt’s constant negativity is a turn off.

The Stews used to be my favorite show. After time Ryan’s childish antics got to be too much for me to take. I also grew tired of the constant arguing between Ryan and Doug. Most people do not want to hear people argue all the time. The Stews also failed to do enough homework off air. They just did not try to improve by studying sports information enough. I think that they thought that they were at the top and would always be there. Ryan is the biggest problem. He needs to grow up. He would “shoot” listeners down if he didn’t like what they said and he talks to darn loud or rather he screams while talking. I wish them well and I hope they take this humbling moment and work even harder to get back to the top. We do need a show like theirs in Atlanta but with significant improvement.

Can you blame either station for the ratings? The state of sports in this state is so stagnant.
Just lost a hockey team. Braves, Hawks, Falcons haven’t sniffed a title in over a decade.
UGA hasn’t beaten a team in the Top 25 in 2 years and Tech struggles to get 8 wins in the freaking ACC.
This city needs something….ANYTHING to happen. Dark days my friends….

@ Dick Lark…..that is some of the funniest stuff I have seen on some of these blogs in a long time. Now everyone be nice to 680 or you will hurt Rodney’s feelings. You know he has a man crush for everyone that works at that station. Let’s not forget how many times they changed the morning show or what they did before Chuck and Chernoff came over. Remember when they had Bill O’Reilly manning the mid day show?
Seriously, the only thing changing here is the fact that the 11-2 slot will now be a mixture of Barnhart and Durham (July thru April) and some combo of Hans, DJ Shockley, One of the Stews, and Mike Morgan during the summer (May-June) and when Tony and Wes are off to travel for their other gigs. Mayhem is getting an hour back that they once had and Bell and Arch are moving up to coincide with Chuck and Chernoff now that the Braves are on and the pregame starts at 6. The Michaels show is strictly for the football only crowd and will play really nice when they do make the switch to FM sometime later this year.
If anything really needs to change at the Zone it needs to be the topics during the afternoon drive. The only – and I mean only – reason I switch over to hear Chuck and Chernoff is to listen to something other than straight football talk. That is all Bell seems to want to talk about except for the occasional golf reference. He and Archer need someone who can talk all sports like the Mayhem guys do everyday.

Arch and Bell are funny and good together, unlike when Bell was stuck with Pollack (who was the worst ever!)
I’ll occasionally switch up and listen to Chuck and Chernoff, who are the best 680 has to offer.
Tony and Wes are full of great information. I could listen to them all day, everyday.
Buck’s a homer and Kincaide is an A##! He should go back to Philly if he thinks it’s so great.
After years of listening to Steak, Nick and Chris, I think I’ve now heard, or could give an educated guess to, each and every opinion they offer. Of course, Chris would butt in and talk over the opinion. I have to admit Nick’s a riot when he is angry.
I can’t listen to the Stews race baiting.

Steak sucks. It kills me to see people speak about the Stews being an African-American show, but no one can understand how difficult it is to listen to Steak when he love to rank women, music, food, etc. with a slant that seems to be as far away from African-Americans as possible. What makes it even worse is the fact that the other two are great sports talk guys.
I only came back to 790 once 680 turned into a chick show. You either get the View sounding gossip or a guy like Leo talking about a sport he clearly knows nothing about.

790 the zone being taken over by new management is the problem! However, I really don’t think the problem is all that big considering the morning show and the afternoon show take commercial breaks about every 3 minutes! Someone is selling a lot of time over there in Buckhead and that only happens when you have A LOT of listeners! The 2 Lives Stews are great but they have been neutered to put it lightly. You cut them off by 1 hour and tell them not to do any of the things that made their show what it was. Pit boss Bob or whoever you are if it ain’t broke..don’t fix it! Sound effects are made for radio!!! Not everybody is a die hard and little laughter never killed anybody…I guess expect for the Stews! Hopefully 680 will hire them like they did the KANG and I can go ahead and switch all the way over for good!

Before sharing my 790/680 comparisons, let me start by saying that the Stews are the most useless people I’ve ever heard. I’d rather listen to a gardening show than these two mindless fools. Now that they’re in a ratings slide, Ryan has joined the entitlement bandwagon with the other NFL has beens in the concussion lawsuit . This fool didn’t play long enough to get a bruise more over a concussion. Since ESPN has dropped him, Ryan’s all over CSS which used to be too “small” for him. I wish these clowns would leave town and end the non sense.
Onto the station remarks. 790 used to own sports radio in ATL a few years ago. They must have let success get into their heads or stared at the sun a bit too long as 680 strolled right passed them and never looked back. I’ll agree with many here that 790’s only saving grace is Cellini and Dimino in the mornings. Otherwise, 680 wins everything else hands down. I don’t understand how 790 gets the Falcons contract given you can’t hear the station OTP, after sunset, in the dark, in even numbered houses, or on bank holidays. You get my drift. 680’s signal gives them a huge edge in some cases for the mere fact you can hear them. Ironic that 790’s best show is in the early am when nobody can hear them on a radio.

I also like Sandra Golden, she’s funny and I like the woman’s perspective. I can take a little Mayhem but not if Steak Shapiro is on that day, he is like nails on a chalkboard. I miss Mike Bell with them in the morning but I admit that Chris and Nick are good together, I don’t know why they every cancelled their old show together. I am not a college football fan so I never listen to Barnhardt and Durham. I detest the Stews, even if I try to listen, they just end up screaming at eachother, every single time. Who could listen to that? In the afternoon, I switch around. If Buck is by himself, forget it, he is a droning boor. I like Bell and Archer for the most part, Bell is funny but after a while his frat boy schtick wears thin. Neither station is perfect!!

If you listen to sports shows for stats, then the Stews may not be your cup of tea. Probably most people who are so obsessed with stats have no athletic ability to play any sports. These are the guys who kept the books at high school basketball games and as adults, they fill out score cards of every baseball game. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s not my cup of tea.
With the Stews, it’s like a group of guys at the gym, basketball courts, cookout in the park, or where ever; just talking about sports and how we once played the games. If I want stats, I google them.

tIMHO #1 – agree: Barnhart and Durham (esppecially Wes) are top-notch, head and shoulders above the rest.
IMHO #2 – Two Live Stews should have, and should continute to “one down the sound effects and some of their shtick:. Ryan in particular. Doug and Ryan are both better educated and experienced than the image presented and they should utilize their smarts to be more pleasant presenters {the ‘dumbing down effect’ to target a specific audience serves no purpose other than to turn-off normal folks}

Radio is one of those business that changes just to change . When I saw the word NEW director I knew someone was going to be gone, and six months from now there will be another NEW director after the old one has fired the good ones. I know all these people at 790 for the most part they are ok guys nothing special none of them. In a city the size of Atlanta with most of the people there being black look it up. I don’t understand why a black radio host can’t make it here.I have lived in Atlanta for 23 years and I listen to both stations. To me one is no better than the other. But being a black man who spends money all over the city I would like to listen to someone who hears and sees thing the same way I see them. I don’t care how you put it these shows with out the RIGHT black person are so boring to black men it’s not funny. I remember when the Stews got the job man they had Atlanta on fire. The white guys at the station were so jealous of them that they were disrespecting them on the air . Then the Stews got bigger went national it was all good for the Stews. Did they get to big to fast I don’t know or was it when Doug got married that things changed? The problem is simple let the Stews do what they do and get the hell out the way. We know who is listening to them right don’t over think it. The rest of the team there don’t speak to me not because there white but because they don’t care if I listen or not that is the real feeling I get. And please don’t bring another black guy who is only black on the out side wow I can not believe I said that. I am a black man asking a white man not to bring in another uncle Clarance Thomas you like that it’s my term but you can us it. 790 is not going any where let the Stews rebuild what they had if they can’t do it there are other brothers in the city other than them that would love the chance to shine . As quite as it’s kept the Stews are not the only black men in america that can do that job. I don’t want them to lose their jobs I just want to hear what other brothers have to say as well. Okay look at what I just said now look at the white guys you have I would not give you a dim for all of them but they are not worried about losing teir jobs and as long as I have known them I would not miss any of them.

I wanted to say congrats to John Michaels for getting some more air time. I do enjoy his show and insight when driving home.
I’m not going to do the general “I like this show at this time and these guys are hacks” but the running theme any time Rodney makes an Atlanta sports radio blog is across the board disdain for Steak. I concur with the previous remarks.
Steak is Atlanta’s Chris Berman. Things I LEEEAARRRNNNEEEDDDD is arguably worse than Berman making noises and coming up with stupid nicknames. There’s a time when the people on air seriously overestimate their self-worth and popularity. Berman and Steak are on that save wavelength more then Steak would ever admit. People listen to Mayhem in spite of Steak, not because of him. Please. Just stop. Maybe the new owners of the station would finally listen to it’s listeners and can him.

“Several issues with the Fan. You cannot get a clear signal unless you’re inside of I-285.”
This is my main problem, plus I can’t cope with the heavy [Northeastern?] accents. I moved down here almost 15 years ago from St. Louis, and let me tell you, local sports talk in Atlanta is like McDonalds compared to the Ruth Chris I grew up with in St. Louis. Every so often I flip over to see if anything has changed, but I never last more than five minutes. In 15 years I don’t think I’ve listened to 790 more than 5-10 minutes at any one stretch. It’s awful. 680’s big problem is programming in the afternoons.

I listen to both 680 & 790 depending on the time of day.
Morning show: 790 wins. As someone said earlier, the hosts on 790 are more knowledgeable (mainly Nick & Chris) than the 680 hosts.
Middays: 790 wins. Barnhart & Durham is superior to 680’s midday programming, ESPECIALLY during football season. I absolutely cannot stand Cowherd and usually don’t listen to the national shows much anyway. Buck & Kincade are OK enough in small doses, mainly outside of football season.
Afternoons: I like both shows about the same, but I give a slight edge to Archer & Bell. They each do a solid job of entertaining while also talking sports. You can get more pure sports talk in other day parts, but both Chuck & Chernoff and Archer & Bell keep things entertaining even on slower sports news days.
Nights: I don’t listen to much sports radio at night. If I do, it’s usually while running errands or something and that tends to be maybe 7-730pm or maybe 8pm at the latest. Otherwise, I’m usually at home and not listening to radio. For the timeframe that I specified, I almost always listen to 790’s Football Night in Atlanta show. John Michaels seems to really be coming into his own as a host. I just hate that I can’t hear the show outside of the perimeter once they power down at night and that’s a HUGE problem during the winter.

I don’t get why there is so much praise for C&N. I took 790 off my radio buttons and replaced it with static so that I don’t accidentally press the button and hear their voices. You ever notice Chris sounds an awful lot like Yogi Bear? Can’t stand that accent, his little buddy is just as bad. Steak is up there with them too, just haven’t heard any praise for him. Not only do the voices annoy, there is a tone of arrogance and provincialism in what they say. Even worse, they do a show on CBS after the weekly SEC game on Saturdays. I thought they made for terrible radio in this market, but that is some awful TV they do. Never a smile from any of them, they take themselves far too seriously, they come across with an attitude that they know some much more than us rubes.

Mornings-Rude Awakening is embarrassing. Mayhem-ok but Steak is horrible
Mid-Mornings-I really enjoy Wes and Tony but I love college football and old “beach music.” They also do something many hosts and show do not do–treat their callers with respect and actually thank them for listening and calling in–in a sincere manner.
Early Afternoons-Buck Belue is the worst I have ever heard. Always has been terrible. Bland, boring and that fake laugh–horrible. Kincaid tries-don’t like him but at least he tries. The Stews–I really try to like ‘em and for a few years I could handle it–but they play radio now–fake arguments etc. and it is very non-sensical.
Drive Time-I like em both –in moderation. I switch back and forth. Bell can be really funny at times. I do like the things like “Win Chuck’s Dinner” trivia game on 680. It is something different and fairly entertaining.

I would only put 680 on if I wanted to fall asleep. I tried their morning show and it was awful. Leo has no business being in radio since he only know braves baseball. Ask him a solid nfl, college football question and he struggles. Only people born and raised in Atlanta would dare listen to Buck.
790 needs to bring in the crazy dean of Atl sports more often. I missed hearing about his quick ways to drop a quick 50 lbs.
Like all others I think the best man in baseball and Chills should bring back the Bottom Line. Only if we can get Chills to go off the deep end and go postal.

Ever since Steak stopped talking so much about where he ate and the baby Sophie, the show improved immensely. I’m in the minority as I can tolerate him moreso now. I’ll take him over Leo and Perry any day. I enjoy listening to guests correct Dimino, as he thinks he has all the answers….He’s not as right as he thinks he is.
I’m not a huge fan of boring and more boring (Durham/Barnhardt)–but they are better than Cowherd. It’s a turnoff to hear someone with a professed love of his own “pipes”, like Durham (and who is completely overrated; I rarely learn anything from him; Barnhardt is the heavyweight on the show).
I’m not a fan of the Stews, either–it’s funny as that tide must not be rising and lifting all boats as it was a few short years ago.
On the drive home, my radio is tuned to Archer and Bell moreso….Chernoff’s voice is like nails on a chalkboard after awhile. I like Chuck, but the price of “Mattlanta” is too great a price to pay–and I don’t pay it. If Archer would stop being a shameless Falcons-organization mouthpiece, then he would gain some credibility. He must think all Falcons fans are spoon-fed sheep, like he is. Bell actually brings the truth–through the childish antics….
790 had to step their game up a year or so ago–and they did. 680 has become excruciatingly boring–and Kincade’s asinine rants related to the Thrashers sealed the deal.

Since everyone is sharing someone opinions, as someone who has flipped back and forth from time to time, if you want sports you listen to 790. Nick and Chris are about the most well informed there is and Chris is one of the best interviewers out there…sports or not. Steak is Steak and gives a little off the sports path but I don’t see what the fuss on here is with him. I find the folks at 680 going “off sports” way more. Leo was part of something special with the Braves but how many times do we have to hear about his bitterness over the Orioles? Didn’t he choose to go there for more cash? Quit whining and I don’t really care about how Erik Bedard is doing! I also find It annoying for Laurentino to constantly be interjecting his morale compass. Rude and Sandra are about all that is listenable in the mornings.
Buck’s fake laugh (if it’s not fake then yikes) is a joke and Kincaide can go back to Philly. Barnhart & Durham are very talented and knowledgeable but I dont listen as I just don’t need THAT much college football. FM or ipod for lunch. Mike Bell is possibly the funniest guy in local radio but I think it played even better against the straight laced Pollack. Archer knows his stuff but at times a little dull. I think Chernoff is really great but not so crazy about Chuck. I listen mostly to 790 but find myself going back and forth most in the afternoon. I flip to 680 in the morning because I LOVE the Braves and want to hear the flagship’s updates but I usually get annoyed with myself for having done so as soon as Perry or Leo open their mouth.

For the record I am a white late 50s sports fan. I happened on to the Stews show about a year ago. I am in outside sales so I am usually driving around 1 pm . I hardly ever listen to the radio. But I have listened to the Stews for a long time now almost everyday. I have no problem understanding them. They know what they are talking about. They take sports from a everyman perspective. Those of you that say you don’t understand them, go and get another white sheet for Sunday dinner.
They argue, they laugh, they explain, they entertain. Thats what they are paid to do. Take them off 790 and I will not listen to that station again. Keep The Stews on or lose a good portion of your audience. They get the best guests and its drama alot at times. It keeps it interesting to me. Anyway , I have enjoyed the Stews for over a year now and I guess I will follow them wherever they land.

Born and raised in Ga. and was the perfect age of 20 when sports talk started in this town. Still think Dimino is the best this town has had. The Bottom Line was the best show in any format I’ve heard living here. I’ve never cared where guys were from as long as I thought they wanted to live and be invested here. As I got older and married and became a father I wanted to be able to get my sports and laugh and think a little. I love good guests and well done interviews. That show did that better than all that have come along. My buddies and I talk Braves, Falcons, college football and about the headline stories. 790 as a whole is the better choice. Not all of the shows and I can take small doses of 680. I can’t take Matt and Chuck for very long. Chernoff is a whiner and Oliver when you really listen is kind of a jerk. Mike Bells material got old a while ago. Wes and Tony are an example of guys who are from the south who have nothing to say beyond the first 5 minutes of their show, probably because they don’t care for much other than each others supposed knowledge of college football. I’ve read these comments before, but this is the first time I’ve written. Some of this is kind of harsh and personal and not about radio, but it is interesting to read what people think.

It’s funny that no one states that they can’t understand John Michaels, who if you asked him would rather be black than white. Yet, no one can understand the Stews. Call a spade a spade..you can’t expand your mind enough to accept Brothers on the radio. At least the Stews talk sports, Steak has his head up Baby Sophia’s behind to even try to talk sports. I am a die hard 790 fan and like all the shows..I can take some folks or leave them but I will never stop listening to the station. 680 is bland IMO. I would protest if the Stews were removed. I think they should go back to the old unaltered Stews. Tony and Wes are great host. Love Chris and Nick. Bell is the funniest guy on radio. I will change to C & C during commercials but Rude Awakening puts me to sleep and Kincade and take the first train back to Phillie. On a side note, I wish Hometeam got more time to talk sports and I miss Brandon and Woovy!

Holy crap let’s be honest and break things down very simply but most importantly accurate, ok? (1) the two live stews? Horrible. They just pander to there own kind but even those idiots are drifting away.(2) mr. Bell is so sad, thinks he’s funny but isn’t, and not sure why, he steals all material. Sir, don’t confuse fast stupid talk with funny. You too pander but to women, your schtick with broads wears so old. By the way your one sided conversation with something called squid ALL the time is awful. 680 guys, your all ok, not great but not obnoxious. Diminio, quit asking if you can ask, JUST ASK. Steak, stews, Bell, Beau,, You’re all terrible! I’ll tell you who I miss though.. The Georgia Boys, my god that was great. Buck and Kincade. I appreciate you guys for just talking. 790 you guys are just in love with yourself but I heard you’ll all be gone pretty soon. I hope so ,,, Doug and Ryan Stewart … I can’t stress enough how terrible you guys are, but you are really horrendous, You’ll both be fired soon too. 680 I’ll listen to you. And please don’t hire that insufferable shpiro, I’ve never seen anyone so often give his location so someone will see and recognize him, Georgia boys..you’re ok with me

Why would they put a 5-hour show in the lineup? Who wants to hear the same voices for that long? Hell, 4 hours is too long. 3 hours should be the maximum time for any radio show. The Stews should try to get another syndication deal and leave these clowns at 790 the Zone. And then 790 can have its plain, boring, All-White lineup where they talk about the Braves all God damn day.

Mike Bell doing a Bob Rathbun impersonation is ironic. Bell’s voice is every bit as phony and contrived as the Hawks announcer. At least Rathbun doesn’t chuckle in amusement at everything that comes out of his mouth. Mike…sorry, you just aren’t funny.

If anyone has ever been to an african american barber shop, you would clearly understand the Stews. If you’ve talked sports at the bar [non-buba] with your buddy at the bar, you should clearly understand the Stews. Either you do or you don’t, but it doesn’t mean they have a bad show because you don’t get it.
The Stews offered the only sports talk in the southern market that is built outside of the box…..until the changes occured. Bob [Buba] Richards deserves the EOD, and is the worst thing that ever happened to the Stews. They would probably be better off at WAOK or in a different market. Too many sports bubas in Atlanta.

There’s a lot of good constructive criticism of the Stews here, but a lot of you guys come off like if it’s not tailored to you and yours, it has no reason to exist, as if no one but you deserves to have a show that caters to your tastes. I don’t mind lightening “schtick” in general, though the music changes just seemed insulting. Mike Bell is the one who bugs me, his anti-woman schtick along with occasional pointlessly vitriolic rants kill my affection for his Dusty Rhondes impressions and the very reasonable balance that David Archer brings. Steak just bores me, and really needs to fade into the background instead of running the show.

When oh when will 790 kick Steak off of Mayhem?! He drags the show down. I could listen to Nick and Chris for hours – they know their stuff and stick to sports and pop culture/nostalgia and they’re funny. Steak talks about shopping, sandwiches, being a big shot and he sounds like he’s hungover most of the time.
When Steak is on tv – he does quite well because he has to rein in his personality and stick to sports. Why not give Steak an overnight slot 3 am to 6 am where he and a coupla gals and metros could talk about the latest fashions?

The Rude show is the terrible. I would rather play in traffic than listen to Sandra laugh. And, What is the Leo’s purpose on the radio anyway.

680 is quite possibly the worst sports talk station in the country. You have Rude who knows nothing about sports…Perry, who is Kincaid-lite…Buck, who plays the devils advocate with Kincaid the entire time…and Kincaid who kisses up all the time (plus, if you always picked the team he doesn’t pick in a game you would be rich!). Chuck and Chernoff is the only show worth listening to. 790 has great chemistry in the morning and afternoon and the Stews have some good moments. I really do not understand how 790 trails 680 in the ratings…especially in the morning.

“Chuck and Chernoff is the only show worth listening to.” Really? Explain what it is about that show that you like. Is it Turnoff’s elementary-school level humor, is it Turnoff’s constant mocking of Oliver’s nasal-sounding voice, is it Turnoff’s constant reference to Oliver’s future wife and in-laws, is it Turnoff’s ‘I’ll talk really really fast and spit out a bunch of things I memorize so people think I’m a really really smart guy? Or Turnoff’s talking over Oliver so he can maintain dominance? Does he really teach you anything that you can’t get from SportsCenter the previous evening? Please confirm that you’ve never found them funny; because they’re not. Have not a comedic bone in their bodies. I’ve spent a lot of time in many markets and have never heard a show so inept and incompetent. Turnoff thinks he’s splitting the atom and, well, is horrible. If you’re amused by these guys there is no hope for you

Regarding the Stews – like Mike Bell, they’re entertaining but only in short bursts. I’d say in a city full o’ dogs and poodles there should be room for them for a coupla hours.
The Rude Awakening – how clumsy is it? Well, Rude is an FM jockey who knew little about sports when he took over and, to improve his sports knowledge, has spent his time watching porn.
Laurentino can’t say “Florida” correctly – (”Flahrida”) and like Dick Lark (hilarious entry btw) pointed out is a weird fan who loves teams from each compass point on the map.
Poor Leo. Great pitching coach who is the resident apologist for the Atlanta Chokes, I mean Braves.
You know who I actually really like on their show? Brian Finneran. I like his insight. As a wide reciever Finnerman is an interesting radio guy.

This is a very easy to settle. If you look at the post on this blog the listeners of 680 have an average IQ of 60…. Why on earth would you listen to that station unless you love to listen to people call in and say “I’ll hang up and listen”… 790 has the best interviews and the best talent bar none….. The only negative is their signal strength in the winter which is being addressed. It’s amazing how all these people claim they hate Steak but the 790 morning shows kills 680 in the ratings…..

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I do like the Zone–I think pretty good chemistry in the a.m. I realize Steak is pompous etc. but he is the franchise– maybe because he put it all together or just use to him. I may be in the minority re: Dimino-but to me he is the know it all New Yorker who I’m sure would prefer his own show and might be a better fit than the shared microphone. Nick is a head case and can take him or leave him. (Speaking of head cases-it’s hard to look at those 3 bald heads-they def. have a face for radio but catch em in morning on TV anyway!)
I really love Barnhart & Durham however. I think we are very fortunate to have these guys & realize it took a lot to put that together-but what great chemistry. These guys are not only knowledgeable but down to earth nice guys who don’t take themselves too seriously and have a rolodex that won’t quit. They do talk other sports but I’ve found myself even more interested in college football as they really dissect it whether the rules, national playoffs, coaching changes, conference alignment etc. and being an old timer- kind-of, I like their Frank Broyles & Keith Jackson etc. imitations and do hope this show stays around. BTW I loved AJ Cannon especially his yiddish shtick, but Mike Bell is even more diversified (nuts) though can get a liitle tiring but would be a cool dude to hang with probably! Stews are tight-but don’t hear them too much.

Afternoon drive – 680 (Mike Bell can be hilarious at times, but Matt & Chuck are more entertaining). Pretty much a tie for me, good to have them both.

I feel sorry for you sports fans in ATL, when it comes to sports talk radio. I try listening to ATL sports talk over the internet, but it’s subpar when you compare them to other markets. As a Hawks fan, both stations coverage of the Hawks is atrocious.
As bad as a sports town that Miami is, their sports talk is far superior to ATL’s. Even Nashville’s 104.5 the Zone is a superior product than anything in ATL.
I think the major thing in ATL, is either the fans don’t call in enough to those shows, or the hosts of those shows love to listen to themselves talk so much, that they don’t take in enough fan calls. A good sports talk show has a great mix of analysis by show hosts, and great comments by fans. If a show isn’t engaging enough to keep your attention for 10 minutes, people will tune you off.
I thought it was horrible that I had to tune into 790 The Ticket . in MIAMI . . just to hear good analysis about a Heat – Hawks game. They devote an entire hour to just talking about the Heat in the mornings. In ATL, the Hawks would be lucky to get 10 minutes.

Only show on 680 I can stomach is Chuck n Chernoff (790 developed that team). Stew ain’t who they used to be, but still better than Buck n Kincaid (I’ve never liked that show). 790 keep finding new talent. Jamie Dukes moved on to greener pastures, as did David Pollack. Chuck & Chernoff. You could virtually create a days line up with the talent that’s left 790, along with the current group and keep it local and keep me interested for 24 hrs. Again, the only thing I find worth listening to on 680 was born on 790’s airwaves. Throw in John Michaels and 790 is just deeper

I happened to hear the Barnhart & Durham yesterday-April 26-discussing the changes and was sorry to hear that. Whatever the reason(s) whether its the Barnhart/Durham workload-no question its quite an endeavor for them to add this radio show with their already busy schedules, or management decision or a combination of that and other considerations, I am not that excited at the prospect of those 2 sharing their microphones with anyone else. Their chemistry is excellent, they seem to get along well and really seem to enjoy doing what they’re doing. To me having anyone else with them is just diluting their theme, expertise, time or however you want to describe it. Maybe it would be best to have their show during football season only (them only) if that will help make it work, but obviously that is their busiest time and they do need some break. I am not a broadcasting insider and have no idea what the other considerations are–just my opinion..

Yep, there’s clearly racial tension on this board. But there’s also some racial engineering behind the scenes too. Bob Richards is clearly making a strategic plan to work the Stews out of 790 TheZone. Say what you want about Steak, but he wasn’t this low down.
Dogs and poodles, the Stews no longer exist. Only a shell remains. Bob Richards deserves the EOD, 790 TheZone has declined with it’s recent changes, and with that……….I’M GONE!
