It seems at least once a year, 790/The Zone fiddles with its lineup. Management can’t seem to help itself.
Starting April 30, “Mayhem in the A.M.” returns to a 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. time slot, the longest morning show in town with that extra hour from 10 to 11 a.m.
Mike Bell and David Archer move up an hour to 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. And John Michaels‘ “Football Night in America” will run from 6 p.m. to 8 pm. instead of 7 p.m to 9 p.m. (Yes, there is an appetite in Atlanta for football talk 12 months out of the year.)
“I’m happy with it,” Bell texted me. “Tough for Archer. He’ll be stuck in traffic on the way home. Now I get to games on time… or hit happy hour earlier.”
So what does that mean for Tony Barnhart & Wes Durham, as well as the 2 Live Stews?
Good question. The boss, Andrew Saltzman, told me today that he is not ready to reveal the details for what will become an 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. show. He hopes to square things away in the next day or two, presumably over contractual issues. I’ll either update this entry or create a new one depending on how the new mid-day show looks. “We have a lot of great talent,” Saltzman said. “It’s a question of how to utilize that talent.”
Barnhart & Durham, who have been on from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., have been getting the strongest ratings for the station. But they are contractually allowed to take two months off in May and June since the pair of football experts work long hours during the other ten months with other non-Zone obligations. Durham does radio play by play for several Georgia Tech sports teams. Barnhart travels to New York during the college football season to do commentary for CBS Sports. I reached out to Barnhart, who deferred questions to his bosses.
So the Zone, based on what I’ve heard, may blend the Stews in with occasional appearances by Barnhart and Durham and perhaps other members of the Zone lineup. Whatever it is, it’s clearly another sign the Stews are no longer the kings of the station.
For a time, the 2 Live Stews were hot, hot, hot. Their ratings were through the roof. They signed a syndication deal. They were regulars on ESPN. Then the syndication deal went away last summer and the Zone cut the Stews from three hours to two. A few months ago, the new program director Bob Richards asked them to tone down the sound effects and some of their shtick.
I called Doug Stewart to get some insight, but he demurred, saying he was about to go into a meeting and asked me to try again at 4 p.m. His agent declined to comment, too.
No matter what, don’t get too wedded to the revised schedule. It will probably change again in a few months.
680/The Fan has been beating the Zone during most time slots, especially late afternoons, where Chuck Oliver and Matt Chernoff has been drawing more listeners than Archer and Bell on the Zone.

If you listen to sports shows for stats, then the Stews may not be your cup of tea. Probably most people who are so obsessed with stats have no athletic ability to play any sports. These are the guys who kept the books at high school basketball games and as adults, they fill out score cards of every baseball game. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s not my cup of tea.
With the Stews, it’s like a group of guys at the gym, basketball courts, cookout in the park, or where ever; just talking about sports and how we once played the games. If I want stats, I google them.

Black Sports talk. Got me there. The Stews are awful…bye! Steak plays his position well. He knows you think he is pompous and runs with it. Putting people on sports radio like: Chris Rude, the Stews, Belue are a reach. None are up to the task of Sports talk radio.

Barnhart and Durham is the best sports talk show in this city….by far….Chuck and Chernoff next folled by Mayhem. Rude Awakening is the Bert Show on AM.

tIMHO #1 – agree: Barnhart and Durham (esppecially Wes) are top-notch, head and shoulders above the rest.
IMHO #2 – Two Live Stews should have, and should continute to “one down the sound effects and some of their shtick:. Ryan in particular. Doug and Ryan are both better educated and experienced than the image presented and they should utilize their smarts to be more pleasant presenters {the ‘dumbing down effect’ to target a specific audience serves no purpose other than to turn-off normal folks}

Radio is one of those business that changes just to change . When I saw the word NEW director I knew someone was going to be gone, and six months from now there will be another NEW director after the old one has fired the good ones. I know all these people at 790 for the most part they are ok guys nothing special none of them. In a city the size of Atlanta with most of the people there being black look it up. I don’t understand why a black radio host can’t make it here.I have lived in Atlanta for 23 years and I listen to both stations. To me one is no better than the other. But being a black man who spends money all over the city I would like to listen to someone who hears and sees thing the same way I see them. I don’t care how you put it these shows with out the RIGHT black person are so boring to black men it’s not funny. I remember when the Stews got the job man they had Atlanta on fire. The white guys at the station were so jealous of them that they were disrespecting them on the air . Then the Stews got bigger went national it was all good for the Stews. Did they get to big to fast I don’t know or was it when Doug got married that things changed? The problem is simple let the Stews do what they do and get the hell out the way. We know who is listening to them right don’t over think it. The rest of the team there don’t speak to me not because there white but because they don’t care if I listen or not that is the real feeling I get. And please don’t bring another black guy who is only black on the out side wow I can not believe I said that. I am a black man asking a white man not to bring in another uncle Clarance Thomas you like that it’s my term but you can us it. 790 is not going any where let the Stews rebuild what they had if they can’t do it there are other brothers in the city other than them that would love the chance to shine . As quite as it’s kept the Stews are not the only black men in america that can do that job. I don’t want them to lose their jobs I just want to hear what other brothers have to say as well. Okay look at what I just said now look at the white guys you have I would not give you a dim for all of them but they are not worried about losing teir jobs and as long as I have known them I would not miss any of them.

I wanted to say congrats to John Michaels for getting some more air time. I do enjoy his show and insight when driving home.
I’m not going to do the general “I like this show at this time and these guys are hacks” but the running theme any time Rodney makes an Atlanta sports radio blog is across the board disdain for Steak. I concur with the previous remarks.
Steak is Atlanta’s Chris Berman. Things I LEEEAARRRNNNEEEDDDD is arguably worse than Berman making noises and coming up with stupid nicknames. There’s a time when the people on air seriously overestimate their self-worth and popularity. Berman and Steak are on that save wavelength more then Steak would ever admit. People listen to Mayhem in spite of Steak, not because of him. Please. Just stop. Maybe the new owners of the station would finally listen to it’s listeners and can him.

“Several issues with the Fan. You cannot get a clear signal unless you’re inside of I-285.”
This is my main problem, plus I can’t cope with the heavy [Northeastern?] accents. I moved down here almost 15 years ago from St. Louis, and let me tell you, local sports talk in Atlanta is like McDonalds compared to the Ruth Chris I grew up with in St. Louis. Every so often I flip over to see if anything has changed, but I never last more than five minutes. In 15 years I don’t think I’ve listened to 790 more than 5-10 minutes at any one stretch. It’s awful. 680’s big problem is programming in the afternoons.

If 790 doesn’t bring the stews back they are making a huge mistake!!! You have to realize these guys have a following that is strong in all communities. These guys still appear on ESPN which none of the other guys do and bring pub to the station. I can’t believe that the program manager would tell them to cut the schtick because all Steak does is talk about food and Mike (I love him dearly) talks about boozing and partying. I agree that Nick and Chris are better by themselves.

“are great but Chuck and Chernoff are really great to”
Whoever says this is out of their mind. C&C are horrible Matt Turnoff speaks rapid fire and acts as if he’s unlashing secret nuggets of info that nobody else has. He is absolutely pathetic. If you’re entertained by tese guys well, you’re a bad comedians dream. And if you listen to sports talk to somehow gain new insight, well, you need a hobby.

I listen to both 680 & 790 depending on the time of day.
Morning show: 790 wins. As someone said earlier, the hosts on 790 are more knowledgeable (mainly Nick & Chris) than the 680 hosts.
Middays: 790 wins. Barnhart & Durham is superior to 680’s midday programming, ESPECIALLY during football season. I absolutely cannot stand Cowherd and usually don’t listen to the national shows much anyway. Buck & Kincade are OK enough in small doses, mainly outside of football season.
Afternoons: I like both shows about the same, but I give a slight edge to Archer & Bell. They each do a solid job of entertaining while also talking sports. You can get more pure sports talk in other day parts, but both Chuck & Chernoff and Archer & Bell keep things entertaining even on slower sports news days.
Nights: I don’t listen to much sports radio at night. If I do, it’s usually while running errands or something and that tends to be maybe 7-730pm or maybe 8pm at the latest. Otherwise, I’m usually at home and not listening to radio. For the timeframe that I specified, I almost always listen to 790’s Football Night in Atlanta show. John Michaels seems to really be coming into his own as a host. I just hate that I can’t hear the show outside of the perimeter once they power down at night and that’s a HUGE problem during the winter.

I don’t get why there is so much praise for C&N. I took 790 off my radio buttons and replaced it with static so that I don’t accidentally press the button and hear their voices. You ever notice Chris sounds an awful lot like Yogi Bear? Can’t stand that accent, his little buddy is just as bad. Steak is up there with them too, just haven’t heard any praise for him. Not only do the voices annoy, there is a tone of arrogance and provincialism in what they say. Even worse, they do a show on CBS after the weekly SEC game on Saturdays. I thought they made for terrible radio in this market, but that is some awful TV they do. Never a smile from any of them, they take themselves far too seriously, they come across with an attitude that they know some much more than us rubes.

Mornings-Rude Awakening is embarrassing. Mayhem-ok but Steak is horrible
Mid-Mornings-I really enjoy Wes and Tony but I love college football and old “beach music.” They also do something many hosts and show do not do–treat their callers with respect and actually thank them for listening and calling in–in a sincere manner.
Early Afternoons-Buck Belue is the worst I have ever heard. Always has been terrible. Bland, boring and that fake laugh–horrible. Kincaid tries-don’t like him but at least he tries. The Stews–I really try to like ‘em and for a few years I could handle it–but they play radio now–fake arguments etc. and it is very non-sensical.
Drive Time-I like em both –in moderation. I switch back and forth. Bell can be really funny at times. I do like the things like “Win Chuck’s Dinner” trivia game on 680. It is something different and fairly entertaining.

I would only put 680 on if I wanted to fall asleep. I tried their morning show and it was awful. Leo has no business being in radio since he only know braves baseball. Ask him a solid nfl, college football question and he struggles. Only people born and raised in Atlanta would dare listen to Buck.
790 needs to bring in the crazy dean of Atl sports more often. I missed hearing about his quick ways to drop a quick 50 lbs.
Like all others I think the best man in baseball and Chills should bring back the Bottom Line. Only if we can get Chills to go off the deep end and go postal.

790 is the superior station, overall, and it’s not even close. Leo, Perry, Buck, and Kincade are utter embarrassments–and I stopped listening to that station due primarily to them.
Ever since Steak stopped talking so much about where he ate and the baby Sophie, the show improved immensely. I’m in the minority as I can tolerate him moreso now. I’ll take him over Leo and Perry any day. I enjoy listening to guests correct Dimino, as he thinks he has all the answers….He’s not as right as he thinks he is.
I’m not a huge fan of boring and more boring (Durham/Barnhardt)–but they are better than Cowherd. It’s a turnoff to hear someone with a professed love of his own “pipes”, like Durham (and who is completely overrated; I rarely learn anything from him; Barnhardt is the heavyweight on the show).
I’m not a fan of the Stews, either–it’s funny as that tide must not be rising and lifting all boats as it was a few short years ago.
On the drive home, my radio is tuned to Archer and Bell moreso….Chernoff’s voice is like nails on a chalkboard after awhile. I like Chuck, but the price of “Mattlanta” is too great a price to pay–and I don’t pay it. If Archer would stop being a shameless Falcons-organization mouthpiece, then he would gain some credibility. He must think all Falcons fans are spoon-fed sheep, like he is. Bell actually brings the truth–through the childish antics….
790 had to step their game up a year or so ago–and they did. 680 has become excruciatingly boring–and Kincade’s asinine rants related to the Thrashers sealed the deal.

Since everyone is sharing someone opinions, as someone who has flipped back and forth from time to time, if you want sports you listen to 790. Nick and Chris are about the most well informed there is and Chris is one of the best interviewers out there…sports or not. Steak is Steak and gives a little off the sports path but I don’t see what the fuss on here is with him. I find the folks at 680 going “off sports” way more. Leo was part of something special with the Braves but how many times do we have to hear about his bitterness over the Orioles? Didn’t he choose to go there for more cash? Quit whining and I don’t really care about how Erik Bedard is doing! I also find It annoying for Laurentino to constantly be interjecting his morale compass. Rude and Sandra are about all that is listenable in the mornings.
Buck’s fake laugh (if it’s not fake then yikes) is a joke and Kincaide can go back to Philly. Barnhart & Durham are very talented and knowledgeable but I dont listen as I just don’t need THAT much college football. FM or ipod for lunch. Mike Bell is possibly the funniest guy in local radio but I think it played even better against the straight laced Pollack. Archer knows his stuff but at times a little dull. I think Chernoff is really great but not so crazy about Chuck. I listen mostly to 790 but find myself going back and forth most in the afternoon. I flip to 680 in the morning because I LOVE the Braves and want to hear the flagship’s updates but I usually get annoyed with myself for having done so as soon as Perry or Leo open their mouth.

For the record I am a white late 50s sports fan. I happened on to the Stews show about a year ago. I am in outside sales so I am usually driving around 1 pm . I hardly ever listen to the radio. But I have listened to the Stews for a long time now almost everyday. I have no problem understanding them. They know what they are talking about. They take sports from a everyman perspective. Those of you that say you don’t understand them, go and get another white sheet for Sunday dinner.
They argue, they laugh, they explain, they entertain. Thats what they are paid to do. Take them off 790 and I will not listen to that station again. Keep The Stews on or lose a good portion of your audience. They get the best guests and its drama alot at times. It keeps it interesting to me. Anyway , I have enjoyed the Stews for over a year now and I guess I will follow them wherever they land.

Born and raised in Ga. and was the perfect age of 20 when sports talk started in this town. Still think Dimino is the best this town has had. The Bottom Line was the best show in any format I’ve heard living here. I’ve never cared where guys were from as long as I thought they wanted to live and be invested here. As I got older and married and became a father I wanted to be able to get my sports and laugh and think a little. I love good guests and well done interviews. That show did that better than all that have come along. My buddies and I talk Braves, Falcons, college football and about the headline stories. 790 as a whole is the better choice. Not all of the shows and I can take small doses of 680. I can’t take Matt and Chuck for very long. Chernoff is a whiner and Oliver when you really listen is kind of a jerk. Mike Bells material got old a while ago. Wes and Tony are an example of guys who are from the south who have nothing to say beyond the first 5 minutes of their show, probably because they don’t care for much other than each others supposed knowledge of college football. I’ve read these comments before, but this is the first time I’ve written. Some of this is kind of harsh and personal and not about radio, but it is interesting to read what people think.

It’s funny that no one states that they can’t understand John Michaels, who if you asked him would rather be black than white. Yet, no one can understand the Stews. Call a spade a spade..you can’t expand your mind enough to accept Brothers on the radio. At least the Stews talk sports, Steak has his head up Baby Sophia’s behind to even try to talk sports. I am a die hard 790 fan and like all the shows..I can take some folks or leave them but I will never stop listening to the station. 680 is bland IMO. I would protest if the Stews were removed. I think they should go back to the old unaltered Stews. Tony and Wes are great host. Love Chris and Nick. Bell is the funniest guy on radio. I will change to C & C during commercials but Rude Awakening puts me to sleep and Kincade and take the first train back to Phillie. On a side note, I wish Hometeam got more time to talk sports and I miss Brandon and Woovy!

Holy crap let’s be honest and break things down very simply but most importantly accurate, ok? (1) the two live stews? Horrible. They just pander to there own kind but even those idiots are drifting away.(2) mr. Bell is so sad, thinks he’s funny but isn’t, and not sure why, he steals all material. Sir, don’t confuse fast stupid talk with funny. You too pander but to women, your schtick with broads wears so old. By the way your one sided conversation with something called squid ALL the time is awful. 680 guys, your all ok, not great but not obnoxious. Diminio, quit asking if you can ask, JUST ASK. Steak, stews, Bell, Beau,, You’re all terrible! I’ll tell you who I miss though.. The Georgia Boys, my god that was great. Buck and Kincade. I appreciate you guys for just talking. 790 you guys are just in love with yourself but I heard you’ll all be gone pretty soon. I hope so ,,, Doug and Ryan Stewart … I can’t stress enough how terrible you guys are, but you are really horrendous, You’ll both be fired soon too. 680 I’ll listen to you. And please don’t hire that insufferable shpiro, I’ve never seen anyone so often give his location so someone will see and recognize him, Georgia boys..you’re ok with me

Why would they put a 5-hour show in the lineup? Who wants to hear the same voices for that long? Hell, 4 hours is too long. 3 hours should be the maximum time for any radio show. The Stews should try to get another syndication deal and leave these clowns at 790 the Zone. And then 790 can have its plain, boring, All-White lineup where they talk about the Braves all God damn day.

If anyone has ever been to an african american barber shop, you would clearly understand the Stews. If you’ve talked sports at the bar [non-buba] with your buddy at the bar, you should clearly understand the Stews. Either you do or you don’t, but it doesn’t mean they have a bad show because you don’t get it.
The Stews offered the only sports talk in the southern market that is built outside of the box…..until the changes occured. Bob [Buba] Richards deserves the EOD, and is the worst thing that ever happened to the Stews. They would probably be better off at WAOK or in a different market. Too many sports bubas in Atlanta.

There’s a lot of good constructive criticism of the Stews here, but a lot of you guys come off like if it’s not tailored to you and yours, it has no reason to exist, as if no one but you deserves to have a show that caters to your tastes. I don’t mind lightening “schtick” in general, though the music changes just seemed insulting. Mike Bell is the one who bugs me, his anti-woman schtick along with occasional pointlessly vitriolic rants kill my affection for his Dusty Rhondes impressions and the very reasonable balance that David Archer brings. Steak just bores me, and really needs to fade into the background instead of running the show.

When oh when will 790 kick Steak off of Mayhem?! He drags the show down. I could listen to Nick and Chris for hours – they know their stuff and stick to sports and pop culture/nostalgia and they’re funny. Steak talks about shopping, sandwiches, being a big shot and he sounds like he’s hungover most of the time.
When Steak is on tv – he does quite well because he has to rein in his personality and stick to sports. Why not give Steak an overnight slot 3 am to 6 am where he and a coupla gals and metros could talk about the latest fashions?

680 is quite possibly the worst sports talk station in the country. You have Rude who knows nothing about sports…Perry, who is Kincaid-lite…Buck, who plays the devils advocate with Kincaid the entire time…and Kincaid who kisses up all the time (plus, if you always picked the team he doesn’t pick in a game you would be rich!). Chuck and Chernoff is the only show worth listening to. 790 has great chemistry in the morning and afternoon and the Stews have some good moments. I really do not understand how 790 trails 680 in the ratings…especially in the morning.

“Chuck and Chernoff is the only show worth listening to.” Really? Explain what it is about that show that you like. Is it Turnoff’s elementary-school level humor, is it Turnoff’s constant mocking of Oliver’s nasal-sounding voice, is it Turnoff’s constant reference to Oliver’s future wife and in-laws, is it Turnoff’s ‘I’ll talk really really fast and spit out a bunch of things I memorize so people think I’m a really really smart guy? Or Turnoff’s talking over Oliver so he can maintain dominance? Does he really teach you anything that you can’t get from SportsCenter the previous evening? Please confirm that you’ve never found them funny; because they’re not. Have not a comedic bone in their bodies. I’ve spent a lot of time in many markets and have never heard a show so inept and incompetent. Turnoff thinks he’s splitting the atom and, well, is horrible. If you’re amused by these guys there is no hope for you

Regarding the Stews – like Mike Bell, they’re entertaining but only in short bursts. I’d say in a city full o’ dogs and poodles there should be room for them for a coupla hours.
The Rude Awakening – how clumsy is it? Well, Rude is an FM jockey who knew little about sports when he took over and, to improve his sports knowledge, has spent his time watching porn.
Laurentino can’t say “Florida” correctly – (”Flahrida”) and like Dick Lark (hilarious entry btw) pointed out is a weird fan who loves teams from each compass point on the map.
Poor Leo. Great pitching coach who is the resident apologist for the Atlanta Chokes, I mean Braves.
You know who I actually really like on their show? Brian Finneran. I like his insight. As a wide reciever Finnerman is an interesting radio guy.

@Chess. It was the younger brother Ryan that picked the fights.

John Michaels and Hans did a great show today 10-1 filling in for Barnhardt and Durham! It was hillarious! They’re knowledgable about all sports, know their ish and have worked together enough that you can tell it’s really working. Same can be said for ‘Home Team’. Guy really knows what he’s talking about and wait…get this…goes to every freaking game and practice in town! This city needs an enima! Time for the old farts to be put out to pasture and let the youngens talk!
