It seems at least once a year, 790/The Zone fiddles with its lineup. Management can’t seem to help itself.
Starting April 30, “Mayhem in the A.M.” returns to a 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. time slot, the longest morning show in town with that extra hour from 10 to 11 a.m.
Mike Bell and David Archer move up an hour to 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. And John Michaels‘ “Football Night in America” will run from 6 p.m. to 8 pm. instead of 7 p.m to 9 p.m. (Yes, there is an appetite in Atlanta for football talk 12 months out of the year.)
“I’m happy with it,” Bell texted me. “Tough for Archer. He’ll be stuck in traffic on the way home. Now I get to games on time… or hit happy hour earlier.”
So what does that mean for Tony Barnhart & Wes Durham, as well as the 2 Live Stews?
Good question. The boss, Andrew Saltzman, told me today that he is not ready to reveal the details for what will become an 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. show. He hopes to square things away in the next day or two, presumably over contractual issues. I’ll either update this entry or create a new one depending on how the new mid-day show looks. “We have a lot of great talent,” Saltzman said. “It’s a question of how to utilize that talent.”
Barnhart & Durham, who have been on from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., have been getting the strongest ratings for the station. But they are contractually allowed to take two months off in May and June since the pair of football experts work long hours during the other ten months with other non-Zone obligations. Durham does radio play by play for several Georgia Tech sports teams. Barnhart travels to New York during the college football season to do commentary for CBS Sports. I reached out to Barnhart, who deferred questions to his bosses.
So the Zone, based on what I’ve heard, may blend the Stews in with occasional appearances by Barnhart and Durham and perhaps other members of the Zone lineup. Whatever it is, it’s clearly another sign the Stews are no longer the kings of the station.
For a time, the 2 Live Stews were hot, hot, hot. Their ratings were through the roof. They signed a syndication deal. They were regulars on ESPN. Then the syndication deal went away last summer and the Zone cut the Stews from three hours to two. A few months ago, the new program director Bob Richards asked them to tone down the sound effects and some of their shtick.
I called Doug Stewart to get some insight, but he demurred, saying he was about to go into a meeting and asked me to try again at 4 p.m. His agent declined to comment, too.
No matter what, don’t get too wedded to the revised schedule. It will probably change again in a few months.
680/The Fan has been beating the Zone during most time slots, especially late afternoons, where Chuck Oliver and Matt Chernoff has been drawing more listeners than Archer and Bell on the Zone.

The Stews were my favorite show. Their rise paralleled Michael Vick’s rise. When Vick left, he took a lot of the fire and passion around Falcon football with him. The stews know football, but have not invested enough in understanding other sports to offer opinions that have weight.

Simply put 680 the fan is better than 790. I tried to give 790 a shot several times especially when David Pollack was there but overall, the station is terrible.
680 the fan is far better and have better personalities and more engaging with their listeners. 790 has a shot by putting their best team against Buck and Kincade. Buck and Kincade are terrible. They try to plan the good guy / bad guy duo but it just doesn’t work. You got a small town personality in Buck (from Valdosta) and Big Philly personality in Kincade. Not a good match.
Chuck and Chernoff are the best.

I prefer 790, the only time i listen to 680 is to listen to Cowturd. All local sports is just too much. I remember a few years ago one of the complaints was the Stews only talked football and basketball, well it seems that the guys at 10 are only on to talk football, go figure!!
Beau should just retire, same and Leo Mazzone.
Call me a chavunist but women should never be a host for a sports talk show, doing updates or some comments, yes, hosting no!! Example Amy Lawrence on ESPN, just damn! just have to turn to something else.
The new program manager at 790 must be cheap, sometimes on Sundays during the 7-10 am show commercials are running at the time the host is talking, just bush league, mix in an engineer for peaks sake!!
Lastly, why in the world would you repeat the falcons radio games a week later during a time when people want to hear sports, Sunday Morning, after college games were played Saturday night, and the NFL has upcoming games. I want to hear either a local show or national show discussing last night games or the NFL games. Repeating last week broadcast is just small town, this is Atlanta a large market..
Oh yeah, i really don’t listen that much to the stews anymore, although i wish them well and there is a market in this city for diversity, i just can’t stand Ryan yelling and screaming and playing radio.
Thats all folks!!!!!!

I used to be a loyal 790 listener about a dozen years ago, but that was because they had the best sports-talk radio show in Atlanta history — The Bottom Line, afternoon drive time show, with Chris Dimino and Nick Cellini. However, over the past 4 or 5 years, I have gradually switched over to 680 The Fan, and now I listen to them exclusively. The reasons? Their pairings have had a lot of stability; they have the most interesting guests; they focus heavily on the local sports scene; they have segments that allow listeners to call in and participate; they carry most of the local teams that I want to hear; and they seem more focused on having a real SHOW than a bunch of “look at me” crap and shtick that gets old in 5 minutes.
790 lost me when they tied themselves to the god-awful, rude, way-too-ethnic, childish antics of the Stews… those guys are horrible. I wouldn’t let them have a show on a country station in rural Iowa, much less a top-10 radio market like Atlanta. They are small-minded, ignorant, offensive, and ENTIRELY too obnoxious, yet 790 catered to them every step of the way. The Mayhem in the A.M. show is good EXCEPT for Steak — kick him off and I’d listen much more often. Meanwhile, the Rude Awakening at 680 is a lot more fun and enjoyable; while Buck and Kincade still don’t sound terribly smooth some days, they do have some lively interactions with callers; and Chuck and Chernoff are now BAR NONE the best sports talk show in Atlanta — great humor, quick-witted, good guests, intense sports discussions, and good fan interaction.
I respect Wes Durham and David Archer immensely, but they are not enough to draw me to the fickle 790. And their signal is WORSE than 680s, and they don’t have an FM option like 93.7. For my money, I much prefer 680 these days. I have won Braves and Thrashers tickets from there; I have met them out at several remotes and had a great time; and the content of the shows is far superior to 3 Yankees rambling on about the Celtics and Knicks for 5 hours every morning, or two jack-wagons screaming “Ahh-ight ahh-ight ahh-ight’ to callers in the afternoon. Please, Ryan Stewart, dial it down… you played a couple of years in the NFL, you weren’t a friggin’ Hall of Famer or Super Bowl champ. Get over yourself.
I patronize the advertisers on 680 regularly, and I appreciate the way they respond to their audience… 790 management and much of its on-air folks have their collective head up their behinds. Good luck catching up to Atlanta’s real sports station, 680 The Fan.

Buck: “Weelll, Joohn, we’ll get back to tawkin’ about them Gooorgia Buuuullldaaaaawgs in just a second, but what do you think about the shakeup over there at 790 the Zooone?”
Kinkaid: “Are you kidding me? Are you freakin’ KIDDING me? Buck, why are we talking about this? Outside of Phillie, we here at 680 The Fan are the only station even worth discussing, no questions asked.”
Steak: “I don’t mean to interrupt but… I mean… Have you been to Solomon… I mean I rarely finish a sent… I’m so busy thinking of the next thing I’m going to… Did I tell you where you can get a good deal on fine jewelry?”
Rude: “Well, there is only one thing that a man could want to buy jewelry for, and that is to enhance the opportunity to satisfy the male libido’s urge for copulation. Did that sound controversial enough? I like to use fancy words to describe the freudian aspects of sports since I haven’t achieved my dream of going to Sirius radio so I can be like Howard Stern and talk about sex all the time, albeit in a more intellectual-sounding manner. PENIS.”
Bell: “HEY NOW! AHAHAHA! NOW YOU’RE TALKING MY LANGUAGE! WE’RE GONNA HEAD OVER TO THE CHEETAH WHEN THIS IS OVER, RIGHT?! AHAHA!”
Stews: “SIR, we dawgs are gonna go over dere and sniff out some poodles, sir! All right, all right, all right!”
Chernoff: “Not me. I’m gonna sit here and fantasize about Chuck’s interest in our new 19 year-old intern instead of talking about sports all day. I believe they are officially going steady because I actually saw them talking at lunch. Don’t tell anyone but I’m totally jealous and that’s why I obsess over Chuck’s single lifestyle so much.”
Chuck: ” We are NOT dating, Matt. She didn’t even go to Auburn. I could never spend time with anyone who couldn’t name every player that was on Auburn’s third-string offensive line in 1985. Go ahead, ask me. I can name what high school each one of them were drafted from, too.”
Laurentino: “Can we change the subject? Regional sports talk doesn’t interest me. I’m arbitrarily a BIG FAN of of USC, the Steelers and the METS, even though they have absolutely nothing in common and I apparently have no roots or real ties to any of them. Don’t you think my random allegiances make me cool?”
Leo: “I’ll tell you what’s COOL. It’s the way Tommy used to locate that fastball on the outside corner. I mean, look, the Braves are going to be fine. When I was coaching them we never let our heads hang down. The only thing that was ever hung was Wohler’s one mistake to Leyritz. Come to think of it, I spent a lot of time in the locker room, and that’s not the only thing that was hung. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Dimino: “It’s hard to soar like an eagle in a flock of turkeys.”
Cellini: “You got that right.”

790 is going to have to dig DEEP if they want to compete with the stellar programming at 680, such as the Georgia Bulldog Roundtable…it’s like someone took a cable access show from television and adapted it for radio…BRILLIANT!
You want to talk hockey — forget it…you want to kill a half hour listening to the UGA tennis coach — you’ve come to the right place!
I’m hoping 680 will soon begin broadcasting rodeos…nothing beats the excitement of listening to someone trying to ride a bull…well, nothing except for listening to the Georgia Bulldog Roundtable!!!

The Stews are one of the best things going at that station. They consistently get the big interviews and have the best interaction with the callers. Over the top? Yes! Come on – it’s called a radio “SHOW”, remember?
Want a great lineup – here you go:
“Mayhem”: Chris, Nick, Steak” 6-10am. Can’t loose with Chris and Nick…Need Steak too…but more so to hold it together and moderate. Chris and Nick are probably the best sports talk guys in ATL.
“Tony Barnhart & Wes Durham” 10am – 2pm Tony and Wes are both informative and entertaining. They would handle the lunch ride hands down. Arguably this is the best show of the day..not my favorite but when you’ve been forced all you life to “enjoy the ice cream the most people like” you get a feel for what’s good to most people.
“The Stews with John Michaels” 2pm – 6pm OK, so I’m African American (just found out a few years ago – was Black until I got the news……hmmmm….folks back home in Alabama been calling me the same thing since 1600’s…at least they are consistent!!! But I digress…lol!)…My point is that John can culturally fit in with the Stews and ATL’s demographics creates an appetite for the Stews. Creates a fun show to ride home to after work. John Michaels from 2-3 and from 5-6 could ease in listeners who may not normally give them a chance.
Anthing with Chris D – interview, pregame ATL Braves talk, etc…6-7pm or until Braves game begins on game day.
In my universe, Archer and Bell don’t have a show. I think anything with Bell in it is generally corny/immature. Kinda like watching an American Pie movie – same jokes.
Regardless, anything (including Bell) is still better than anything on 680…680 The Fan just has a feel to it that doesn’t sit right with me. So much so until I’m going to follow 680 the Fan even after the police tell me to not do so! I think they have a hoodie…sounds like they have a white sheet hoodie. Yes, this is inflammatory…yes, this is the internet, yes, this comment was over the top! Yes, I care about your responses….errrrrr…….mmmmmmm…OK, you got me…I don’t give a *&%^#$! LOL!

Get Steak off the air.
The Stews are the worst thing I’ve ever heard on radio, they need to go.
Morning Drive = Nick and Chris
Mid-Day = Wes and Tony (Fantastic Show)
Evening Drive = Mike & Dave
680 is awful except for Matt & Chuck overall.
I can’t even listen to The Rude Awakening, Leo should have never been give a broadcasting gig.
Buck & Kinkade are a serious snooze.
Matt & Chuck are pretty good, but I can only listen for so long until Matt’s constant negativity is a turn off.

The Stews used to be my favorite show. After time Ryan’s childish antics got to be too much for me to take. I also grew tired of the constant arguing between Ryan and Doug. Most people do not want to hear people argue all the time. The Stews also failed to do enough homework off air. They just did not try to improve by studying sports information enough. I think that they thought that they were at the top and would always be there. Ryan is the biggest problem. He needs to grow up. He would “shoot” listeners down if he didn’t like what they said and he talks to darn loud or rather he screams while talking. I wish them well and I hope they take this humbling moment and work even harder to get back to the top. We do need a show like theirs in Atlanta but with significant improvement.

Can you blame either station for the ratings? The state of sports in this state is so stagnant.
Just lost a hockey team. Braves, Hawks, Falcons haven’t sniffed a title in over a decade.
UGA hasn’t beaten a team in the Top 25 in 2 years and Tech struggles to get 8 wins in the freaking ACC.
This city needs something….ANYTHING to happen. Dark days my friends….

@ Dick Lark…..that is some of the funniest stuff I have seen on some of these blogs in a long time. Now everyone be nice to 680 or you will hurt Rodney’s feelings. You know he has a man crush for everyone that works at that station. Let’s not forget how many times they changed the morning show or what they did before Chuck and Chernoff came over. Remember when they had Bill O’Reilly manning the mid day show?
Seriously, the only thing changing here is the fact that the 11-2 slot will now be a mixture of Barnhart and Durham (July thru April) and some combo of Hans, DJ Shockley, One of the Stews, and Mike Morgan during the summer (May-June) and when Tony and Wes are off to travel for their other gigs. Mayhem is getting an hour back that they once had and Bell and Arch are moving up to coincide with Chuck and Chernoff now that the Braves are on and the pregame starts at 6. The Michaels show is strictly for the football only crowd and will play really nice when they do make the switch to FM sometime later this year.
If anything really needs to change at the Zone it needs to be the topics during the afternoon drive. The only – and I mean only – reason I switch over to hear Chuck and Chernoff is to listen to something other than straight football talk. That is all Bell seems to want to talk about except for the occasional golf reference. He and Archer need someone who can talk all sports like the Mayhem guys do everyday.

Arch and Bell are funny and good together, unlike when Bell was stuck with Pollack (who was the worst ever!)
I’ll occasionally switch up and listen to Chuck and Chernoff, who are the best 680 has to offer.
Tony and Wes are full of great information. I could listen to them all day, everyday.
Buck’s a homer and Kincaide is an A##! He should go back to Philly if he thinks it’s so great.
After years of listening to Steak, Nick and Chris, I think I’ve now heard, or could give an educated guess to, each and every opinion they offer. Of course, Chris would butt in and talk over the opinion. I have to admit Nick’s a riot when he is angry.
I can’t listen to the Stews race baiting.

Steak sucks. It kills me to see people speak about the Stews being an African-American show, but no one can understand how difficult it is to listen to Steak when he love to rank women, music, food, etc. with a slant that seems to be as far away from African-Americans as possible. What makes it even worse is the fact that the other two are great sports talk guys.
I only came back to 790 once 680 turned into a chick show. You either get the View sounding gossip or a guy like Leo talking about a sport he clearly knows nothing about.

790 the zone being taken over by new management is the problem! However, I really don’t think the problem is all that big considering the morning show and the afternoon show take commercial breaks about every 3 minutes! Someone is selling a lot of time over there in Buckhead and that only happens when you have A LOT of listeners! The 2 Lives Stews are great but they have been neutered to put it lightly. You cut them off by 1 hour and tell them not to do any of the things that made their show what it was. Pit boss Bob or whoever you are if it ain’t broke..don’t fix it! Sound effects are made for radio!!! Not everybody is a die hard and little laughter never killed anybody…I guess expect for the Stews! Before sharing my 790/680 comparisons, let me start by saying that the Stews are the most useless people I’ve ever heard. I’d rather listen to a gardening show than these two mindless fools. Now that they’re in a ratings slide, Ryan has joined the entitlement bandwagon with the other NFL has beens in the concussion lawsuit . This fool didn’t play long enough to get a bruise more over a concussion. Since ESPN has dropped him, Ryan’s all over CSS which used to be too “small” for him. I wish these clowns would leave town and end the non sense.
Onto the station remarks. 790 used to own sports radio in ATL a few years ago. They must have let success get into their heads or stared at the sun a bit too long as 680 strolled right passed them and never looked back. I’ll agree with many here that 790’s only saving grace is Cellini and Dimino in the mornings. Otherwise, 680 wins everything else hands down. I don’t understand how 790 gets the Falcons contract given you can’t hear the station OTP, after sunset, in the dark, in even numbered houses, or on bank holidays. You get my drift. 680’s signal gives them a huge edge in some cases for the mere fact you can hear them. Ironic that 790’s best show is in the early am when nobody can hear them on a radio.

I miss Mike Bell with them in the morning but I admit that Chris and Nick are good together, I don’t know why they every cancelled their old show together. I am not a college football fan so I never listen to Barnhardt and Durham. I detest the Stews, even if I try to listen, they just end up screaming at eachother, every single time. Who could listen to that? In the afternoon, I switch around. If Buck is by himself, forget it, he is a droning boor. Steak sucks, Rude Awakening is worse, Stews are a shadow of their former self, Buck and Kincade blows. Somebody start a new station, put Bell, Dimino & Cellini on from 7-noon, then Chuck & Chernoff through drive-time. Thank God for the WEEI iPhone app!
