‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ recap: season 4, reunion, part 3: the insults are over!

The longest season is over!
As we enter the third and final hour of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” reunion shows for season four, we witness yet again what is considered a staple in the “Real Housewives” oeuvre: arguments where each woman is talking over the other one to the point where you can’t really follow what’s going on. It’s obfuscation via vociferous venting.
If there were a “Real Housewives 101″ course at the local community college, this type of argumentative style could take up an entire class. From a viewers’ standpoint, it’s like watching a wrestling match or a hockey fight: entertaining with virtually no actual nourishment included.
Marlo Hampton and Sheree Whitfield worked the verbal jousting quite famously in South Africa, adding in strange facial expressions, anti-gay slurs and juvenile imitations of each other. ( “I don’t even remember that moment,” Sheree said in retrospect.) Kim Zolciak and NeNe Leakes have talked over each other several times. Kandi Burruss worked it tonight with Marlo, as did Cynthia Bailey and Kim.
Host Andy Cohen, when this happens on a reunion show, is like a referee who lets the idiocy go on just long enough before he says, “Hold it!” and sends each woman back to their respective corners.
During the Kim/Cynthia jousting, Cynthia regurgitates an argument from season one’s reunion show, which we even get to see again featuring NeNe’s infamous line to Kim: “Close your legs to married men!” And Marlo must have seen that first season show as well, because NeNe used a nasty insult (”Hooker!”) to Kim that first season, which Marlo recycles using the even tawdrier “Whore!”
Watch the season one moment for nostalgia’s sake:
Kim once again defends dating Big Poppa, despite the fact he was still married. Why? He was separated and not living with his wife. Kim spent plenty of time with him. (Yet if things were so great, why did she never say Lee Najjar’s name on air?)
During this argument, a genuine snarky smile emerges from NeNe’s usual pursed lips. And Cohen utters, “I thought you two made up!”
Then we quickly segue to a classic Marlo vs. Kandi dust up.
Andy asks Kandi how she feels about Marlo calling her a “sugar mama” during an earlier taped party. Kandi says she thought that was funny. She was more annoyed by how Marlo was deliberately trying to rile things up between her and Kim by saying Kandi was like “big poppa” in earshot of Kim and her then boyfriend Kroy Biermann.
To back up her case, Marlo says Kandi is dating a Bravo production guy, who does not make nearly as much money as Kandi and drives Kandi’s car. Kandi said he has his own vehicle, a Range Rover, and owns his own place to boot.
Then Kandi goes for the jugular: “I don’t care if I took care of every mother-****** in here. I could!” (In other words, who’s really rich here, b****?)
It’s odd that Marlo, who has no problem dating rich men, is going after Kandi for being her own woman. Marlo also has an incredibly annoying argumentative facial expression, which usually features a very fake smile. At least Kim and NeNe “look” angry while they yelp at each other. Kandi flails her arms about and bugs her eyes out.
After mocking both Kim (”whore!”) and Kandi (”sugar mama!”), Marlo gives an odd summary of her viewpoint: “Bottom line. The girls are just worried what Marlo does. Who cares what I do? I don’t care what you do! I don’t care if Kandi takes care of 50 men or if Kim slept with 50 people. You have to get to know me as a person.” So she somehow claims to “not care” and then insult Kim and Kandi again. Impressive!
In other, less compelling, topics:
- The “Smalls” (effectively, Phaedra, Kim and Sheree) accuse of Cynthia of being two faced. “She changes when she comes around you,” Sheree said to NeNe. Then to Cynthia: “Your demeanor is totally different.”
Kandi adds: “You have one opinion one day. Then your opinion changes when [NeNe] is around.”
- NeNe accuses the Smalls of kowtowing to Kim and reporting to the “boss” whenever something happens. (They all say they’re their own boss – or more truthfully, given how much cash they get from Bravo, NBCUniversal is their boss.) And Cynthia noted how th Smalls grovel and seek Kim’s approval and apologies.
- Later, in a sort of farewell montage to Sheree, we see her arguing with Kim (pulling her wig), verbally rocking it with a so-called party planner (”who gonna check me boo?”), going at it with NeNe (”Your first car was repo’ed in the parking lot of Home Depot!”) and then parrying with Marlo. “I’m not proud of all those,” Sheree says afterwards.
- There is still tension between Kim and NeNe. Yawn.
- None of the Smalls admit to seeing NeNe on “Glee.”
- NeNe, who was already trying to get acting roles while “Real Housewives” season one was being cast in 2008, helped get both Sheree and Kim on board. She says the producers thought Sheree was “a tad boring” but NeNe went to bat for her. They didn’t originally think of casting a white person on the show but Kim was perfect, they thought. (I do recall NeNe saying at least some of this before the show had even aired.)
At the end, Cohen had each castmate summarize their current goings on:
- Besides “Glee,” NeNe has a new wine coming out. This was taped before we found out she was cast in an NBC Ryan Murphy pilot as a recurring role.
- Cynthia continues to run her modeling agency and loves teaching the classes.
- Kandi’s Bedroom Kandi is doing well and she’s in love.
- Phaedra wants to create a video to focus on creating a better booty as well as learning the funeral business.
- Sheree is hoping to revive She By Sheree with fitness apparel and shoes.
- Kim’s spinoff show is coming out April 26 and she has a new country song “Love Me First.”
NOTABLE QUOTES
“She was in prison for a reason. She’s crazy!” Kim, on Marlo
“I will watch myself on the show and bust out laughing.” - NeNe. (Kandi rolled her eyes.)
“The way you’re going, I’m going to have to give you some.” Kandi, referencing cash, to Marlo, who didn’t make it as a cast member of “Real Housewives of Atlanta.” Somehow, she didn’t meet Bravo’s stringent high standards!
“My house is paid for!” – Kandi. Some other folks on the show? Not so much.
“She can be a baby NeNe,” - NeNe, about Marlo, in an oddly condescending way considering they’re friends.
“I will always have a lot because haters like you keep hating. Look at me!” – Marlo, the woman whose ego has no bounds. Does that even make any sense?
“Think before I speak.” - Marlo, noting the lesson she learned from using that anti-gay slur in South Africa that rhymes with “gag.”
“I’m always taught a man is supposed to protect and provide. I’m sorry. Some women have to protect and provide,” Marlo, justifying her own behavior while oddly belittling Kandi for being an independent woman.
RATINGS
The second reunion show on Thursday, which isn’t a normal night for “Housewives of Atlanta,’ drew 2.54 million viewers, slightly below average for the season as a whole and down from Sunday’s fireworks-filled reunion show. It’s comparable to what the second reunion show last year drew (2.65 million.)
UPDATE: This finale episode drew 3.23 million, up slightly from a week earlier and the best numbers for a reunion episode ever. So all the drama brought viewers back after ratings slipped in the second half of the season.

He He is such a bitter post-op. After Kim acknowledged HeHe’s involvement in Kim being on the show, HeHe begrudgingly nodded in agreement. Kim then wished HeHe well and HeHe could not muster the decency to bid the same.
Kandi gained considerable ground and respect from me after setting Marlon et al straight.
Cynthia the chameleon should just step aside. She is pathetic. She couldn’t argue her way out of a paper sack. She really is HeHe’s flunky.
I’m not sure what was going on with Sheree. It was like someone stole her brain; she was completely befuddled and stammered through most of her words. She usually is more composed.
It was extremely tacky for Marlon to discuss Kroy’s finances. She knows nothing of etiquette or grace for that matter.

Also…the greatest moment was NeNe’s face when Andy Cohen revealed that in a conversation with a Glee producer, they were very interested in having Kim on the show as well.
HeHe could have been bought for a nickel…which is really something considering she is so rich. She tries so hard to give the air of sophistication, but she almost choked on that crow when Andy said that.
I would also like Andy to stop bringing up the Tardy for the Party bit. It’s tired.

As usual, NeNe thinks if she can bellow loud enough, it means she’s right. Marlo’s just a disgusting person. I had to hit “mute” while she was talking. And Cynthia doesn’t know up from down until NeNe tells her which is which. If NeNe isn’t available, Peter tells her. Cynthia’s just weak, which is why her sister intimidates her. Marlo needs to stop being so mean for no reason, she is such a depressed, insecure person. Those shoes and clothes can not tell her that they love her everyday and that is all that she has b/c no real man would want her. NeNe is just bitter and mad at other successful women on the show, she acts as though she does not need to be on the show but she knows that time she is fired she will be broke b/c she in not making that much money on Glee (I have never watched that show). I am glad that Kandi put NeNe and Marlo in their place, at least she is a woman that made her money without laying on her back, and will be rich many years after this show is long gone.

As a well educated woman in the Atlanta metropolitan area, I am appalled at all of the women on Atlanta Housewives. They DO NOT represent any housewife that I know in Atlanta. Most of them are not even married. DUH????
Kandi has no morals. Her statement about Pheadra regarding becoming pregnant before she married: “In her family, they aren’t allowed to have babies out of wedlock,” or something to that effect. Kandi, didn’t your mother tell you that it is wrong to have a baby out of wedlock? Pheadra’s family is right, you should be married before becoming pregnant. Kandi acts like she has never heard that before. Evidently her mother didn’t tell her.
Cynthia: Other than being friends with HeHe is the more decent Housewife.
Pheadre: I like her. She seems to be more self-made, has higher standards than the other women.
HeHe: I can’t stand her. She is a bragger and a liar. I won’t be watching Glee.

I am so glad the entire season is over. Sick of NeeNee, Cynthia Nee Nee and Marlo Nee Nee. Sorry to see Sheree go though. She wasn’t all that bad. Why would you keep someone like Cynthia and let Sheree go? Cynthia may have been a great model in her day, but she is not an educated woman. I just watch to listen to them revert to ghetto english. I will say, on a bad day with the Atlanta bunch is far better than the thugs of NJ. I will not watch RHNJ this season. I will be watching Kim and Kroy’s new series and wish them all the best. If you would pay attention to her, she is hysterical and he is a great guy. She deserves happiness for having to put up with NeeNee and Marlo.

I love NeNe; Marlo and Cynthia – I’m team “Talls.” I also like Phaedra; glad Sheree is out and not sure about Kandi. I do know that the smalls do kiss up to Kim, i.e. Kandi and Sheree especially. I can’t believe how they explained themselves to Kim regarding what was said during the S. Africa trip. They should have just said, “so what I said it – now what.” It seems that it was really important that they keep Kim’s friendship. They really wanted in on that wedding, and even afterwards! Maybe some football tickets, too! NeNe and Cynthia didn’t give a hoot.

Wow season 3 was a mess, but oh well it is what it is…Kandi has the real money and basically set them all straight. She is never afraid to admit what she said and if an apology is needed, she is woman enough to give one…NeNe needs to stop bragging, that chick is NOT rich and it is so class-less to keep saying that. However, I’m happy she is using this show to advance her career, at least she’s not stupid, but her voice is still so annoying (am I the only one that feels this :-/). Sheree sure turned out to be a back-stabber, WHEW, who saw that coming? I guess she was trying to save her job, but too little too late…Cynthia seems nice but couldn’t think for herself to save her life…Love Phaedra…Kim has changed for the better but she should just admit she was wrong for the whole Big Poppa stuff, being a mistress is never good…Marlo is a liar, shallow(she really got on my nerves when they were in S. Africa) and she is really the ultimate hater if you wanna know the truth!

I watched it. I say kudos to Kandi for not needing a man to take care of her. Kandi has more money than all of those women and she doesn’t need to run around yelling “I’m rich” to prove it. People who really have money don’t run around yelling about how much money they have. Kandi’s “old house” as Marlo called it was paid for. Marlo probably rents a house that some old man pays for her. Good for Kandi for standing up for herself. Obviously she’s going to have to date men who make less than her because there probably aren’t that many single men out there who make more.
I’m over NeNe…she used to be funny and cool…now she’s just annoying and pissed off all the time. She thinks she’s too good for the others now that she’s on Glee.
Marlo is just trash trash trash. What an awful representation of women.
Phaedra is sketchy…what kind of a lawyer gets an envelope of cash in a parking lot as payment for legal services? And Apollo doesn’t seem to work, even though he seems nice.
Cynthia’s husband is a loser too…she needs to kick him to the curb.
I’m glad for Kim that she found Kroy…he seems to be a good influence on her.
And poor Sheree…she’s going to be broke as crap since she’s not coming back to RHOA next year.

Most people who are truly rich (Kandi) never talk about it or flaunt it. People who have little money or new money (NeNe, Marlo) talk about money or likes to brag simply because they seem to think that money defines them. They have been seen dressed very casually on a daily basis no fancy clothes on. Mark Zuckerberg is the name of the founder of facebook. This young man is extremly rich but very humble and down to earth at the same time. I watched an interview with him and his longtime girlfriend and they both are well rounded young people who don’t brag or talk about money. Whenever you see these 2 they are always casually dressed.

I have always felt that the RHOA are an insult to the city. They are poor representations of Finer Womanhood. I still want to clarify. I love Phadrea because she appears to have old-fashioned morals. NeNe is not as educated as she wants people to believe. She thinks being a social butterfly is important! She is just a “little shot” trying to be a big shot”!

Let me say that the fourth season of HOA was not a juicy as the previous seasons. However, I do respect NeNe for speaking her mind and staying consistent in what she says. You can tell NeNe was raised by her grandmother. NeNe is very old school. She is not overtly into sex (e.g. talking about it, looking at it or doing it). She believes in consequences for her children, i.e. Bryson (let him stay in jail and hopefully learn a lesson). She believes in the sanctity of marriage (though she accepts gifts from the white man, she is not sleeping with him) That is southern Black womon rule number one, do not give up the cookie, especially to a white man, make them work for it, if you give it up at all. She cooks. She says “please” and “thank you” to people she interacts with, e.g. her nanny, hotel staff, waiters, bartenders, airport staff etc. She is articulate. Her rebutal to Sheree about kids stealing not being a reflection on their parents, was right on point. You can train a child in the way they are suppose to go, but in the end they make their own decisions.That is no reflection on the parent, when you know you have done all you could do in raising your child. I just like NeNe. Remember it was NeNe who was the runaway STAR of HOA when it debuted and put the show on the map.
Kim on the other hand is dumb. Poor Kroy will be broke in about one year from now and/or divorced from Kim. Her oldest daughter will be preganant by the time she is 16. The youngest may make it. She seems to be the less self-centered daughter. Quiet as its keep, Kim is a racist. The way she talks at (not to) Sweetie is how a Mistress (no pun intended) talks to a slave. Sweetie is dumb for allowing Kim to speak to her in that manner. However, Kim got it from her parents. Her father said in one esposide, “that’s your girl, if she were me girl she would have been gone a long time ago” (referring to Sweetie) . “Girl”, really! Kim has no manners. Marlo’s equitette book wouldn’t do her any good.She is rude and uncouth. It is inbred.
Kandi- Have you watched her eat. It is disgusting how she chews her food. It is like a cow chewing its cud. Ugh! She has little bitty hands and fingers and you know what they say about women with little bitty hands and fingers. Hmmm, could that be why she has entered the sex toy industry???
Sheree- Is a want-a-be. What womon would not put their ex-husband in jail for non-child support payments??? Especially in Georgia, where they get the money upfront. Your children come first Ms. Sheree, not a handbag. She got boo-koo money from her husband in her divorce settlement, where did that go?? Could it be that Sheree is trying to live above her means. She needs to get a job and stop blaming others for her mis-deeds and failure to take responsible for her life.
Cynthia- Oh, Cynthia, the queen of passive agressiveness. Cynthia has gone got passive agressivness down to a fine science. Watch out Peter, she is not as dumb as she looks.
Phadera- Keep the oneliners coming. Question Phadera-why did you accept payment from your “cleint” in the parking lo?. Looked very shady. No receipt, no legal papers nothing and the transaction was in CASH!!!! Phadera- the lawyer, you know better….looks very shady.

Kandi’s just 1 failed album away from a nervous break down. Part 3 of the reunion was so hard to watch, mainly due to Kandi’s voice being a nasally nightmare. I couldn’t even hear Marlo’s accusations, for Kandi yelling like a maniac solely to drown Marlo out before the true was heard. Kandi’s so pathetic to even attack Marlo when she and the SMALLS are the reason Marlo’s even on the show. The SMALLS failed attempt at antagonizing NeNe with Marlo’s presence, backfired and now as Marlo said on the reunion “I found a friendship with NeNe and now the Smalls don’t want me anymore”. Just want to clear up some false assumptions…
1. Kandi did not make her money as a member of Xscape, I’m from Atlanta so I remember… she made it by writing and producing hit songs for many artists, including but not limited to TLC, Whitney Houston and Destinys Child. So even if you didn’t know her before RHOA she has been very relevant in the music industry for a long time…She has always been savvy with her money and lives below her means, none of the other “wives” can say that, hell half of them are still renting. Also Kandi liked NeNe when she first came on the show, it was NeNe who was drinking Hater-ade and gave Kandi a hard time from the start, so go back and watch that season. They butted heads because Kandi didn’t let NeNe punk her…
2. Gossip is not fact, therefore just because someone says it doesn’t make it so, but what is a fact is that Marlo does not have a real “job” and is famous for nothing but going to jail so obviously her bills are being paid with someone else’s money (especially since her boutique didn’t succeed and has been closed for a while) and at this point I can’t see her going back to bartending.
3. I’m sure Bravo’s editing only shows the juicy stuff, it’s all about ratings to Andy, but editing clips leaves things out, not re-arranges what you say and how you act, those things are crystal clear, so if you appear shallow (Marlo), self-righteous (NeNe), cut-throat (Sheree), unintelligent (Sheree) or a braggart (NeNe & Marlo) then that’s what you are.

She isstill writing and producing songs for different singers. If you go to fulton county and fayette county property tax page Kandi has 5 properties Paid for not renting or buying but PAID for. The houses are for family members that she has helped along the way. She didn’t do the Evelyn (basketball wives) and leave her mom and sister in the ghetto while she lived in her nice home. I am so disappointed with this season of RHOA. NeNe is a bully and an user. I can’t stand to watch her. NeNe has nothing but negative things to say. I believe it is because she is very unhappy. I prefer not to see her at all. I don’t really know what happened between she and Greg, but she dogged him on the show. We all know the market fell and the economy remains awful. When the going got tough she got going. She dropped Greg like a bad habit and threw salt in an open wound by saying she made more money than Greg. She is a gold digger and the classic bully! Awesome role model! Yet, America is embracing this characteristic of hers-sad!. Marlo just wants a show of her own. I wouldn’t watch her. Cynthia please…Cynthia is fake. I could do without her. almost forgot about reunion three sunday night, I did enjoy Kandi’s line too, she did indeed put them in their place with that one, but I agree w/some others, she moves too fast w/men. When she made a statement about ‘who’s man doesn’t spend the night if you’re in a relationship’, no Kandi, EVERYBODY’S man DOES NOT spend the night, especially when they have children. Now, Sheree, looks like NeNe won again. She talked about how she helped get you on the show b/c the producers thought you were boring, and you had all this back talk, like you were all that.
