Colton Dixon had rough night and paid for it. CREDIT: Michael Becker/FOX
Two weeks, two surprise results. But this time, there was no save.
Colton Dixon paid for two subpar performances Wednesday night with his “Idol” life.
Dixon, who had a really strong night eight days ago, was someone I thought could end up in the finals. I was wrong. He had never been in the bottom three (like Jessica Sanchez last week) so this was not expected.
Dixon, who didn’t even want to audition with his sister, apologized for his arrogant attitude last night when he said he didn’t care what the judges thought after he botched both “Bad Romance” and especially “September.”
I thought he was going to land in the bottom three but predicted Elise Testone would go home. Wrong again! Hollie Cavanagh was also in the bottom three but fortunately survived. At least I did predict the proper bottom three.
Based on the polls, all seven of the remaining singers have sizable fan bases so expect the unexpected in the coming weeks. The only person to date who has evaded the bottom three now is Phillip Phillips. But as Colton learned, that doesn’t mean anything.
[My colleague Melissa Ruggieri caught Mandisa, who finished ninth season five, at the Dove Awards at the Fabulous Fox Theatre. Read the kind words Mandisa has to say about Colton.]
[UPDATE: Queen will be the theme next week, with Roger Taylor and Brian May joining in as mentors. The top 8 season five sang Queen, too. Katy Perry and Stefano Langone will perform on the results show.]
Jimmy’s take:
Joshua: “Joshua did a lot of good for himself. He stayed in his sweet spot. He was very very comfortable… he could end up in the finals.”
Hollie: “Hollie did come out of her shell. Giving her ‘Son of a Preacher Man” was very clever. Does it keep her out of the bottom three. I don’t think so. To make it to the finals will be a long road ahead of her.”
Skylar: “Each week, she gets better and better. In my opinion, she’s the best performer we’ve got.”
Elise: The Marvin Gaye song “Let’s Get It On” “caused a baby boom. Last night, no baby boom. Because of that choice, Elise will spend time in her vacation home in the bottom three if not go home. She needs to find the most potent rock songs and sang the way she sang Led Zeppelin” to make the top two.
Phillip: “Phillip did a great job with that Usher song. He really fell into it. He could have written that song. Midnight Hour, I could take it or leave it. That was a pass.”
Colton: ” ‘Bad Romance’ was completely wrong, the way he looked, the way he positioned himself, the way he sang it. The look, I was stunned. It was somewhere between 1985 Billy Idol, ‘TRL’ and Spider-Man on Broadway. He can come back. He’s got to re-group and get better songs. Phillip is picking better songs.”
Jessica: “This girl is singing songs that are too old for her. People are not going to relate… as her mentor, I have to apologize, I should have caught that.”
Other elements:
- A jubilant “Dancing in the Streets” group sing, a pleasant “Vision of Love” by Kris Allen, a sweet tribute to Dick Clark, a ridiculous “Sorry for Party Rockin’ ” by LMFAO and a passably starry-eyed Ford ad. And Taylor Hicks came on to say he’s going to Vegas, with no details. (On Twitter, he said he’ll have a three-month residency at Bally’s on the strip starting in June.)

Again elise evaded going home. Who are these people voting for her?
She should have went home weeks ago. Colton should still be their. Elise
is no better about the cocky comments back. Colton is always nice, that’s
the first time he ever said anything back, and look what happens. Elise can’t
ever take any constructive criticizum with out talking back. She better go next
week. Poor Phillip( love him) took it harder than Colton. You’ll still make it big

Good call on the even fan bases Rodney. I think at this point whoever has a bad night is gone regardless of past performances. Theme choice could be an issue but if they split them like this week it may not be as much of a factor. Though it was obvious who they grooved the Soul one in for this week. Made for a less than stellar second hour however and not because I don’t like Soul but more that it is unfamiliar to these kids.

Hate to see Colton go out so soon. He seems like a great guy, and I thought he went out on a very strong note with Lifehouse’s “Everything.” I suspect he will do well in the Christian market. Phillip will pick up most of his votes, but I think the next couple of weeks will see two of the ladies exit – Elise and Hollie. However, I thought Jimmy was spot on with Jessica. She is singing songs way to old for her. Broadway, maybe, but not AI material. Btw, Jimmy is doing a good job and fills a hole left by Simon. One final note: I am sooooo over Ryan’s “games” with his list of contestants being safe. Seriously – it isn’t fun any more.

I have to admit, the elimination of Colton was a surprise. It will make for a very interesting remainder of the season. I’d like to think that his poor performances got him booted, but I am starting to wonder if having his sister come on stage jinxed him. Her negative attitude cursed him, and the voodoo doll she made of him probably didn’t help.

It’s a shame now that Colton Dixon is gone and Jessica is still there. Guess the judges are feeling like “fools” now that they used their save a week early. I was hoping there would be enough voters this week to show the judges they don’t control who stays and who goes now. I sincerely think AI would have higher ratings if these 3 judges were gone. Maybe next year they will be. I predict here and now the two finalists will be ……………. are you ready for it…………….Skylar and Phillip. Oh, BTW, would someone please feed Jessica, she’s nothing but skin and bones.

Kellie Pickler was voted off weeks before Taylor Hicks and her net worth is double his.
Chris Daughtrey was voted off weeks before Taylor Hicks and his net worth is three times Taylor Hicks. The judges are wrong it is not a contest about who is the best it is a contest of who is the
most marketable. Hollie will do well whether she goes next week or later. Colton should have gone
futher but he sang two duds this week and that is all it takes. I love how the judges always criticize the contests for poor song choice when they are the ones who give them all these lame songs to choose from.

I really think it’s time for Idol to change the judges. The show has become an ego trip for them more than watching the singers.
Starting next season they should have Jimmy as one judge every week and have him invite someone to join each week, each week someone different. Two judges are enough. We don’t need to be entertained by them.
Also, they should let the contestants sing for 3 min. for each song, not 1 1/2 or 2 min. The show is about singing not endless BS by the judges.

There is a lot of talent on Idol this year. The only thing that makes it unbearable to watch are the judges. Can anyone shut Jennifer up? And, for some reason, this year Steven has picked his favorite and given horrible reviews to anyone who threatens his favorites. Randy is still telling everyone that he worked with the original artist of the song. Why no criticism of Jessica’s song choices–they are too old for her and boring. Hate to say it because Josh has a good voice too, but he is one dimensional and boring. They are going to have to change the name of the show to ” The JayLo Show.” She needs to quit interrupting the other two judges, and she has been consistently negative to a couple of contestants because she is afraid her two faves won’t go through if these other two get votes. She is obnoxious and she is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. The best judge is Jimmy–he is not demeaning, he if professional. Shut up, Jennifer Lopez. I am sick of how much Ryan has changed and is asking the judges questions that should not be asked. These judges tell people who to actually vote for and they consistently leave out two of the contestants in any positive comments–even when they have had a great night.

Ryan stated there were 53,000,000+ votes. I would surmise that you can rest easy shelley unless you can generate a million or two via machine and AI claims to be able to screen those out.
Just for kicks I used my phone’s stopwatch on some of the performances last night. The “modern” songs averaged 110 seconds but all of the “Soul” ones I checked clocked in at only 100 seconds with the exception of Joshua’s pimp spot that was the night’s only 2 minute performance. If I had a wish on this show it would be for 3 minute song limits and 10 second inane judge comment limits.

For Colton fans, there should be enough ITunes cuts from Idol to make an album out of right now.
He will be on the tour, which may come to a city near you in the future. He will also have a song on their “composite” 2012 Idol season album, which they cut every year after the show.
The past 2 weeks, with first Jessica, then saved, and now Colton – (who was getting mostly positive remarks by the Judges) tells me that:
1. The majority of the voters are not in the Judges pocket, and some are fed-up with how the Judges are rattling-on about nothing and everything. More irritating than believable.
2. As someone said here earlier, the performances, vocal ability and song choices are making a real difference.
3. Singing 2 songs, rather than just one, can help to enhance or destroy your popularity. 2 chances to shine, 2 chances to fail.
While I think PP and Joshua will get the most potential lift from Colton’s former voters – it throws the competition into a stage now — where especially the girls, with 4 still on the roster — will be in a performance girl-fight next week, – to make the Top 5.

Exactly that’s how I feel what is all this crap,
Ok you give a good performance all the way thru
then all of a sudden this show comes and it’s all about
“just that performance” I don’t get it. Colton has had
more better performances than most of the people left
on their, and now all of a sudden lets forget all the performances
that brought them to where they are now. No I don’t judge things
like that. Elise was the next in line to go if you have any kind of sense of music
because in my book the only good performance she gave was the Ledzepplin
whole lot of love. and that I will give her. Colton gave one good performance after another he just had a bad week and it cost him. Still makes me mad Elise

Here’s my take on last night’s elimination: It’s a shame that Colton is gone BUT from now on EVERYBODY who goes home is a good singer! Everybody who goes home has a large group of fans.
So we all just have to accept that, 1. This is the way the show works and 2. Not everybody likes the same singers! Especially this year when there is so much talent.
Moaning, groaning, b*tching, and claiming the show is rigged or teens are voting for the wrong person(really? if they weren’t voting for Colton and Phil who WERE they voting for?)or everyone who voted for soandso is deaf doesn’t change the outcome.
The show is a roller coaster ride. The ride is a thrill a minute but the end is just a big slowdown that comes to a stop. That’s why I’ve said a million times that it doesn’t matter who wins. Idol doesn’t care who wins. As long as we’ve enjoyed the ride, we’ll be back again.

I will miss Colton. I agree he didn’t have a great night, but I thought overall he is much better than some of the others. You can tell he is a performer and really gets into the performance. I disagree with Deirdre about him apologizing to his Christian fan base. I was disappointed when I heard his comments after he was judged. He was definitely way too smug. I do think he meant to apologize for that type of attitude – be it to the judges or the fan base. I did read another article about his elimination and he said Christian music was his heart and that is what he intends to pursue. I wish him the best of luck in that genre. Mandisa is doing very well and I can see Colton right in there. You can tell that is what he is passionate about. Look forward to seeing and hearing him in the future.

Deirdre @ 8:10: if that’s true, what a sorry bunch of fans he must have had.
I noticed Wednesday that the screaming and applause for Phillip was twice as much as for Colton, and the crowd stood for much longer. I think that the young girls may have gotten turned off by the stupid looking outfits, as Jimmy said, channeling Billy Idol, 1985, and that cock-a-doodle-doo hair.
And, Philipx2 is not the greatest singer for sure, but he’s very unique, like Dylan and Rod Stewart were unique, and interesting to hear and watch. Colton had a nice voice, but for some reason lately, perhaps because of the praise Phillipx2 has gotten from the judges, Colton has done some weird stuff, both with the songs and his voice, and both his performances this week were dreadful Maybe he was trying to find a P2 kind of niche, and failed.
I just wish and hope and pray Joshua goes next week – I dislike his singing more than anyone ever on Idol (serious contestants I’m talking about, not the silly stuff in the auditions), with the exception of the F word and that blubbery one from last year. I love Skyler compared to Joshua, and I can’t stand to hear her voice.

Call a friend. Call a family member. Have dinner. Catch a movie. Go shop. Garden a bit. Watch the sunset. Talk a leisurely walk. Play with your dog. I still think that last week’s bottom three should have been this week’s bottom three.
But here’s my call on the Season 11 horse race.
Skylar: Don’t think she’s peaked yet. They’re rounding turn three and Skylar’s making a strong move up on the outside.
Holly: She may not be as polished or professional as Jessica… but that’s why I like her. She’ made a big move this week. Only time will tell if she’ll keep moving up or if she’ll falter.
Phillip: Not doing anything spectacular. He’s stuck in the middle of the pack – plugging along. But he’s still in the race.
Jessica: After opening up to a huge lead she’s still the front-runner. I don’t know if she can hold everyone else off.
Elise: She’s stuck in the back of the pack, and fading fast while the others pull away.
Joshua: Ditto Elise.

Deirdre, first, thanks for your 11:31 post last night. Everything that needs to be said about Idol was there. Oh, you might hve added Ryan’s sadistic way of telling the contestants if they’re “saved” or not.

Why vote based on performance vs. body of work? Most of the singers (except PP) are just that good to over-shine one another from week to week. No one deserves a pass, even Jessica. Joshua has been my favorite through most of the season. However, he’s been out-shined by Skylar and Elise at times so I voted for them instead of Joshua. Who has the gonads to honestly vote for a good performance, that isn’t their favorite?

It is all about style
April 20th, 2012
9:35 am
Everyone who is left is a talented singer but you may not like their style. Anyone who says Joshua can not sing problem can not hold a tune themselves. If you like Hollie’s style, then you are not going to like Joshua, Elise, or Phillip and vice versa. Jessica has the best talent hands down and people forget she is ONLY 16!
Jimmy was right, Jessica’s talent is beyond her years which is why they give her songs to sing that the 30 to 40 plus audience will enjoy but does not connect with the younger voters. The last two weeks she sang some very difficult songs, Stuttering and Try a Little Tenderness, and knocked them both out of the park, but a less mature ear could not pick up on the vocal gymnastics she is pulling. You may not like Randy as a judge but he knows talent (Whitney and Mariah).

donna, frankly I don’t care who the judges want to win and it seems to change every week. They have given lots of praise to everyone who is left, yes, even Hollie. If Phil, Joshua, Elise and jessica make up our final 4, I don’t care which one of them wins.
I like Skylar but I don’t want Idol being labeled as ‘country” after last year’s winner. And I like Hollie, I just don’t think she matches up to the level of the others.

If you like Nicholas Sparks movies – yes, they are now a genre – “The Lucky One” has all the ingredients you’ve come to expect: starcrossed lovers, bad weather causing death, kisses in rain (or, as here, in a shower), beautifully photographed love scenes,.. you know. The preview you’ve seen in theatres or on TV tells the whole story. Only surprise left – who will die to make the survivors ponder and grieve.

Style: Funny, I love Hollie, and really like Phillipx2 and Elise as well. There goes that theory!
And I cannot carry (not hold) a tune, however I can recognize voices I enjoy hearing sing and think are good. Joshua is absolute mayhem when he “sings” and I can’t stand to hear it. Just dreadful as far as I’m concerned.
If you think Jessica “knocked it outta the park” with “Try A Little Tenderness”, you have obviously never ever heard that song. Even Jimmy said it was a disaster and that she destroyed the melody! I’ve always liked Jessica, but think she’s one of those getting less good as the season wears on. Happens often, I start out liking a couple of singers, but they just seem to sputter out towards the end, and that’s what I feel about Jessica.

One intersting thing I noted… the judges trash (underservedly) Holly last week and she’s not in the bottom 3. They praise her (over did it for the 2nd song) and she’s in the bottom 3. I bet they are also very much aware of that.
I’m also convinced now that Jessica getting voted off was very much due to a combonation of the angry vote going towards Holly 2 weeks ago, and people thinking there was no way she would be in any danger.

Jane, agreed! Not sure what Elise has to offer. Most of the time she sounds like she is struggling to make a point – either through her weak singing ability or her excuses for not being up to par. She is being falsely built up by the judges, when thousands of sub-par quasi-rockers across the nation could perform just like her.

What’s really strange is that I think she picks the best songs. But what she does with them just sounds awful to me. Plus her crap attitude has got nail her eventually. It’s American Idol…all you can say. I’ve seen some truly strange voting over the years on this show. Anything is possible. Colton did have a bad night, but overall has been stronger than others.
I cant remember her name, but Jessica reminds me of a contestant the year Fantasia won. That contestant had a voice like Whitney Houston and yet kept landing in the bottom three. Elton John was a mentor one week that year and said the fact she was in the bottom three shows there are a lot of stupid people in America haha. The same applies to voting off Jessica last week and possibly Colton this week. You could add Pia Toscano to that list too. Often times I wonder who’s voting and for what reason. How else does Bristol Palin make it to the DWTS final? haha

Rx…Elise was all over the place last night. I think she tries to hide her emotions so much that she seems cocky. First she sounds like being in the bottom 3 is no big deal, then she sounds like she thinks it’s crazy that she’s in the bottom 3, THEN, when she is declared safe, she looks like she doesn’t believe it..

Thinking about next weeks theme, Queen doesn’t fit anyone either. All of these oldschool themes are good to educate the youngins on real music, and to make some of us oldheads reminisce. However, a large chunk of the 18-49 demographic do not relate. This may come back to haunt Idol in the future if the new shows continue to progress.
Don’t really know how they will handle Queen next week. Maybe Hollie and Elise will come out with strong performances. This is something that would’ve been right down Colton’s alley. Oh well..hehehe! I’m expecting for Skylar to countryfie a song, Joshua to take Queen to church, Jessica will sing a less popular tune from Queen, and PP………who cares, he’ll just growl and hop his way through to the finals.

If BET had their version of Idol, you already know the mainstream of voters would be different. Not necessarily just by race, but by genre preference too. Meaning there wouldn’t be a whole lot of critiques about too much melisma, too much gospel tone, too many vocal gymnastics, he/she needs to show more restraint, etc. In contrast, the critiques would flow in the opposite direction. Sorry to see Colton go so soon. Voters should look at the overall package; instead they hone in on one performance. Joshua gets too many standing O’s. I can only think of one he deserved. The judges can influence fans with their comments and actions. And Jen does anything that Randy says. Stephen is my favorite judge. And Jimmy is almost always right in his assessments. I believe it will be Skyler and Phillip at the end and I’m pulling for Phillip. Phillip is sexy but I don’t think he realizes it, because he’s just feeling the music. Jessica tried way too hard this week and I was hoping it was enough to send her home this week with no save, but no such luck. Elise….just kinda weird and never really connects with the audience. Joshua….don’t care for his style and he sings like his tongue is too big for his mouth. Colton….always been kinda boring to me, so I was neither shocked nor upset with his elimination. Skylar has a great voice but I am so tired of all her screaming. I love Phillip’s style, his creativity, his sincerity and his voice. I love Hollie’s voice. @ Deirdr @ 11:03am Ok you got me on this one.
I will admit, I am sensitive to the splitting of votes thing along ethnic lines..cause I will be honest. I dont care what someone’s background is, if they sing well, regardless of the genre. And understanding that something that G pointed out, different genres of music, different styles are more prevalent.
If you like R&B/Soul/..Melisma is more prevalent as well as reaching the upper register…that Country fans will see as over-singing or screaming. As R&B/Soul fans will see Country music as monotonous a little amateruish in singing ability (Definitely not lyrics, because Johnny Cash/Bonnie Raitt universal appealing lyrics cross over).
So the talent is harder to judge this year, because the final contestants are all so different from one another, yet most of them are on the same skill level. So that leaves the voting up to people voting along their favorite genre.
Skylar is going to get the Country, Country-Rock Vote
Jessica should be getting the R&B vote…but does anyone who like R&B watch American Idol anymore after the past couple years where there have been talented people who sang it, but did not advance due to the lack of numbers?
Philip is going to get the indie music votes.
Elise is getting indie votes, my dog died votes, and sympathy votes due to the bashing the judges give her every other week.
Joshua is getting r&b/soul/gospel votes
Hollie is getting….uhm, I cant even call it. Even though she is talented, I can not tell what voter bloc she is appealing towards.
So with this said…on record, Country is the most “bought” music in Ameica, but R&B/Hip-Hop is the most downloaded and played on the airwaves. 3 weeks ago I would have said this is Jessica’s to lose, but people who listen to her genre just do not vote on AI, and has been like that for awhile, so its Skylar’s to lose now.

Elise should sing Another One Bites The Dust
Joshua should sing God Save The Queen
Jessica should sing Under Pressure
Skylar should sing Fat Bottomed Girls
Hollie should sing Keep Yourself Alive
Phillip should sing We Are The Champions

Shaun, I’m kind of like that myself. I like Joshua, Phil, Jessica and Elise. I admit to being somewhat visceral when it comes to the music I like. If I’m listening to something and it doesn’t make me move in someway, i.e. foot tapping, head bobbing, dancing, then that music isn’t for me. Sometimes I don’t even care how well the song is sung as long as it is in tune and I’m moving.
That probably doesn’t make me a very good judge of music but I like what I like.

From the poll above, appears that slightly more people were in favor of Colton leaving, than were upset by it. Plus a lot of buzz that Colton might be compared to Daughtry leaving early, etc. If so, then the industry won’t pass-up a chance to make money by signing him. But, you don’t see too many Idol’s under the top 5 – from the past – doing much in the Billboard top 100 since the show.
The Music business is more competitive than ever – with so many Independent labels in the U.S. & U.K. bringing fresh talent into the business.

I didn’t lose any sleep over Colton going home. I thought he was the worst of the week. While both he and Phillip are good singers neither were/are great. Entertainers? Yes! Any of the remaining 6 could win although Phillip, Skylar, Jessica and Joshua should reach the final 4. The two guys shouldn’t cut into each others votes and could split Colton’s fan base. Joshua because Some may blame Phillip for Coltons exit. Phillip because in some ways especially CBS (cute boy syndrome) and they are similar in genre. Skylar has the country vote locked up. Jessica probably the R&B with some Pop voters as well. Elise maybe the rockers vote albeit they’re a small fan base. Hollie only has Pop voters so she will probably be out next week. If not her than Elise.
I agree with Deirdre and others who have said the worst thing Phillip could do is win. Scary thing is he probably will. The best thing for him would be a medical exit. Most of the top 10 will sign record deals so the winner doesn’t really matter unless it’s Skyler. If Skyler wins then Idol will get the Country Idol label. She too would be better served not winning. Elise, Jessica, Joshua or Hollie could use the push that comes with winning. That said my dream final Jessica vs Joshua likely won’t happen. Phillip vs Skyler probably will.

@Shaun 11:33 comment. You hit the nail on the head again. Bottom line……r&b/soul fans really don’t watch Idol anymore in big numbers like the past. As some of my friends would say…..”You still watch that lame show? They haven’t had a real singer win since Fantasia.” Being a fan of r&b (whether part-time or full time) can be really frustrating if you watch Idol. I’m willing to bet that XF and The Voice are more popular among 18-49 r&b, pop and rock fans.

G, according to the ratings, Idol is beating The Voice in the 18 to 49 demographic. The rating system doesn’t really distinguish between 40 year olds who like R&B as compared to 18 year olds who like pop.

If we’re betting, I’d be willing to bet that more viewers are watching Idol than The Voice, not because of the genres featured but because Idol gives the viewers a much better chance to get to know the singers and Idol also relies mostly on viewer voting rather than random eliminations by the judges.
I don’t think the actual choice of music has much to do with it for many people.

Very funny remark about all 3 bottom dwellers being blonde this week yet the race baters go into hiding! It’s a conspiracy against the anglo folks, I tell ya!
At this point and I have never felt this way but I hope whatever the results are, it pisses the judges off each and every week. Their biased approach this year has almost made the show no fun and un-watchable. I hate that too!

Yeah, the Elton John hissy fit about Jennifer Hudson and racism was hilarity at its finest. EJ must not have watched the show much because the final 7 contestants, 4 were black. The 3 black girls were bound to take votes away from each other – much like the judges turned the Hollie-Jessica thing into a competition.
Right, Elton, AI was all racist in Season 3. A black winner, 4 of the top 7 were black, and you even had a girl from Hawaii in the top 3, so technically there were 5 minorities in the top 7. But EJ still flamed and raged.

I have a friend at work who hates Levon Helm. When told Levon had died yesterday, he replied, “Good.” He then went on to argue that Levon’s music was awful, and that this was not just his opinion – it is a FACT (I’m not exaggerating – these were his exact words).
Our Idol judges make this same mistake, confusing their opinions with fact. And so do some who post on this here blog. One has even asserted that since Josh and Jess are “better” than Phil, then Phil’s having never been in the bottom three must mean that the voters are racists.
But if one is going to play that card, then might his own refusal to respect the differing opinion that Phil could possibly be “better” to some than J&J, by his own definition, indicate his own reverse racism?
I’m not bashing. I’m just saying we are all a little bit biased in one way or another. It’s human nature. It doesn’t make the majority wrong and it doesn’t make the minority right. You can whine about it all day, as some do, but it is a tired and futile argument.

Who is the best performer? The one with the total package, that’s who. The presence, the personality, the poise, the amp at the right time and with the right emphasis that is what it takes. The only one I have seen that meets those expectations is Elise. If you google some of her past work, then you will also see that she has put in the time, effort, patience, fortitude, and sacrifice to pursue her dream. All my best to someone who moves you because her singing comes from her soul due to having the experiences to have one. All my best to Elise. She will always have my vote.

@Dick Lark. One of the reasons I like your posts is that you don’t hide your opinions on here. You don’t avoid topics that are “sensitive” to some and I appreciate that.
On to business. RoHo, no need to referee this one. It’s Friday.
IF the majority of Phil’s fans are white, that DOES NOT make them racist. How could anyone of sound mind come to that opinion? Just because race is injected into the conversation, doesn’t mean there is a racist component at play. Does that make sense? I don’t think anyone on the blog has been racist in their views, unless I missed something. However, there have been many opinions of preference on the blog. Nothing is wrong with having a preference.
I like Dave Mathews, but I can’t stand Phil. PP sounds nothing like Dave, although he tries. Are Jess, Josh, Hollie and Elise better singers than PP? YES. THEY. ARE. Why? They know how to control their voices and sing in key. Matter of fact, they sing in various keys and registers. PP growls when he stumbles upon a note he can’t handle. I have yet to hear him sing clear notes in a song. He tries to manufacture a huskiness to his voice. It’s not a natural thing. Before I move on, is there a racial component to anything I just stated? If so, I’m more than open for discussion.

Yes, I do love “Bohemian Rhapsody”, but even I got tired of it back during “Wayne’s World” and all the covers just don’t do the original justice. Just don’t do it, and don’t do “Fat Bottomed Girls” because that song is just dumb. Unless you get Jennifer Lopez on stage for it, then it would be ok.

Is Lebron James a “better” athlete than Brian McCann? Technically speaking, yes, of course he is. Does that mean I have to like him more? No, I don’t. Yes, it’s comparing apples and oranges because they’re in different sports; but that’s my point.
Is Joshua a “better” singer than Phil? Technically speaking, he probably is he is. Does that mean I have to like him more? No, I don’t. But again, it’s comparing apples and oranges because one is a gospel singer and the other is a rock singer.
Do I like rock more than gospel? YES, I do. Is one genre “better” than the other?
Are apples “better” than oranges? Maybe one is better for you than the other, nutritionally speaking; but I am not wrong if I prefer one over the other. Music is the same way. It’s subjective. There is no right or wrong vote. If more voters prefer Phil they are NOT WRONG.

The tough thing about performing Queen’s music is the complexity of quite a few of their biggest hits. The backing vocals are very prominent and can easily drown out an AI contestant thus preventing them from showcasing their voice. I believe I will be totally underwhelmed next Wednesday night.
As a side note, Queen’s drummer, Roger Taylor, is a very gifted musician capable of playing numerous instruments. In addition, and I learned this back in the 70s, he has a 4-octave voice. He’s the one who hits the glass shattering “for me…for me…for MEEEEEEEEEEE” on Bohemian Rhapsody just before the thumping guitar riff.

As I stated a moment ago, Lebron is technically a better athlete than Brian McCann, but that doesn’t mean I have to like him more; however, sports is objective. The one who can run faster and jump higher gets more points and therefore he wins.
Music is subjective – thank God. Josh may be able to sing higher notes and hold them out longer than Phil can, but there’s no rule that says we all have to like him more because of it. If there were, we’d all have to listen to opera.

I don’t know D… I still enjoy the ride! For me, it’s seeing what they pick every week, especially when it’s a theme I love… seeing what they do with old songs I’d half forgotten, or new songs I didn’t know.
It’s the surprises, like Colton last week with “Love The Way You Lie”… (though I was fine seeing him leave last night, I bought that song on iTunes and love it!)
And most of all, it’s when one of them pulls off a “moment”. I’m usually won over, at least for that week, even if it wasn’t my fave. Remember Lakisha Jones with “And I Am Telling You (I’m Not Going)”? Kat, with “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”? The original and first of the change-up trend, Blake Lewis with “You Give Love A Bad Name”? (I couldn’t stop watching that one!) Even poor old Off-Key Lee with “Hallelujah” and the choir.

Correction: Queen will not be a bad fit for everyone because we have Skylar. She will take every song and make it her brand of Country.
If the theme were Beatles, we’d have Country Beatles, Metallica theme, we’d have Country Metallica, and if we had a rap theme, you guessed it, we’d have Country Rap.

This week, for the very first time, I could see Elise having a successful career. She seems to be an old soul.
The teenage girls are driving the vote and they are pushing for Phillip. Skylar has her work cut out for her to beat him. He is not my taste. Seems like he takes songs from many different genres and applies his bland style to make them all sound the same.
Hollie haters need to listen to her with their eyes closed. She is amazing, but totally devoid of stage presence.
Joshua is absolutely amazing some weeks and lukewarm other weeks. I would love to see him win but I’m not holding my breath.
Jessica is similar to Joshua in that she has some great and some off weeks. Her lows are lower than Joshua’s in my book.
I will really miss Colton. He was sweet, cute and had a musical style all his own. His fashion style was far too 80’s for my taste. I actually enjoyed his Bad Romance performance, but September fell flat.
I’m pulling for Joshua and Skylar even though I don’t listen to country or mainstream gospel.

That was Bo’s best moment. Not too many people knew of Badlands and for Bo to sing their song acapella was impressive.

And that makes me think, with Phil, it may be the genres he picks that I am disliking so much. I’m not a big Genesis fan… I don’t like Usher at all… and as far as his style, I’m just not a huge Dave Matthews fan. I like “Crash Into Me”, but that’s about it.
He could do Southern Rock for sure… If he’d come out and sing some Allman Brothers, CCR, R.E.M., even Atlanta Rhythm Section, LeRoux… I’d probably love him.
It’s the songs. I’ve come to the conclusion, it’s the songs.

Just wanted to make a few observations. First, I find it really disturbing that there are so many nasty “attacks” are being made against individual singers. Regardless of whether you support them or not, I suggest that standing on a stage in front of twenty million viewers and singing two songs is difficult enough, and when you add the stress of potentially being voted off based on a bad performance, then I suspect there will be occasional performances that may not live up to some of your expectations. If any of you think you could do a better job than any of these performers, then I suggest you hitch your shorts up next auditions and see if you’re good enough to even make it to Hollywood.
Now off my soapbox. Colton admitted this morning that he probably picked the wrong song for his voting fans with his choice of Lady Gaga. He said he really hadn’t thought it through. The problem, however, in my opinion, is that Colton also had a really bad night singing as neither of his songs sounded good, so there was really nothing there to encourage voters to pick up the phones anyway.
For those of you who didn’t notice, when Colton’s name was called, Phillip became very upset, which I suspect will draw a large portion of Colton’s fans his way. Like it or not, that genuine reaction of affection for Colton by Phillip will be appreciated by his fans and I think they will show that appreciation by supporting him instead. Just a hunch.
Based on past AI winners and this year’s votes, I believe the two finalists will be Phillip and Skylar.

Queen is another 70’s/ 80’s songbook of overplayed, run-in-the ground songs. Due to the popularity of the band and their music at the time, many songs have been done so often since on classic radio, etc. — that most people, even from that era, are just tired of hearing them.
The current teen/20’s/30’s generation does not identify with those songs much. They have been doing this same stuff for 11 years now, This show could be gaining and growing every year, but the ages of the decision-makers and kick-backs to and from the music publishers on the songrights – have left it stagnant.
This songbook will take-out one of the girls easily, and leave a few more people along the way, that wonder why these young artists can’t find a good, current song to sing.

Glenn, most of us here are pretty kind to the singers. There are always a few bad eggs that show up after a performance show or after results and say stupid stuff about the singers. You’ll find that on just about any blog and we tend to ignore them. There are a lot of people in this world who can’t feel good about themselves without putting other people down.

Random thoughts from a bit of reading from this blog and elsewhere this evening:
I would never be able to call anyone a friend who would say “Good” to the passing of a person known for simply being a musician, part-time actor and more importantly a husband and father.
“I was saddened to learn of the death of my fellow Arkansan Levon Helm. Levon was one of America’s great musicians. His music, with the Hawks, the Band, and throughout his career, and his standout performance in Coal Miner’s Daughter, touched a cord with me and with many Americans. He never forgot his roots. I was always grateful that he helped the annual Delta Blues Festival get off the ground. He will be deeply missed.” — Bill Clinton
@iron eagle – I did see Tony Vincent (and his wife Aspen) in the Las Vegas WWRY show and would have loved to have seen it in London. Thoroughly enjoyed it and was dismayed that he was cut on The Voice.
Speaking of Las Vegas the announcement on AI and the link on the front page here that Taylor Hicks is the first AI alumnus to get a Las Vegas “residency” show got me curious. Upon further review he has eight weeks scheduled for the Indigo Lounge at Bally’s. If you should wish to catch him there it shouldn’t be too difficult as it appears there is no cover charge for the lounge.
I guess it is hard to be objective in a medium that is entirely subjective and a musician friend of mine cannot even conceive of how you can compete or battle with music anyway. I guess the only people in an ideal world I would expect to remain objective would be the producers and their “judges” but it’s not an ideal world.
Lastly, how does one do Bohemian Rhapsody in 100 seconds?

Mildly suprised to say the least of Colton getting the boot over Elsie. i do think he has a smidgen of an edge over Elsie.
That was a dreadful performance of a very Nice song. SEPTEMBER..and he changed it so much No one would have guessed it was the same Earth Wind & Fire September which is constantly in rotation on the radio. A fatal move that costed him his slot.
Its all boils down to song choice at this level in the show, and putting your ALL into it and not relying on your past weeks performances because it does not matter how well you sang last week. Its about your Present performance. He may have been ok in the past. but thats not good enough and choosing the wrong song and changing it up like he did..well he himself understood what caused him to fall out of the boat, hopefully he hasent drowned and can swim to shore in the massive waters of the music world. good luck.
Elsie should definately keep her suitcase packed she will be going shortly after.
I dont know why folks are upset..Taylor Hicks is a prime example of its NO BIG DEAL TO WIN the IDOL TITLE..if not for Hicks showing up and the flash of his pic in the opening intro of idol..him Kris Allen, Daivd Cook..no one would remember they won the title. I for one forgot all about Kris Allen until I saw him last night and his performace was just ok for me. Nothing I would dash out to purchase or pay to see in concert..Yawn*

Laugh My F—— A– Off is just a satire of the Music Industry itself. Electro Pop with costumes and bizarre lyrics, intended to be a spoof on Party Rockin’ Music that suddenly got blasted all over YouTube – picked-up by Will.I.Am and Interscope Records.
That’s why this anti-Pop Star act got on Idol, so they can promote it even more, although it actually makes fun of the Rock Star image and the need to have a good singer(s) to rock the block and party-down with a street clown.
I don’t think this act even expected to be famous, more of a spoof —— it just happened from their bizarre music videos. So now, Interscope (Jimmy Iovine) & Will.I.Am want to make more money from the act – so one hand payolla to the other and presto – they are on the show.

The NYT asks four TV-judges to “pass Some Judgment on Talent-Show Arbiters”. Some comments on AI judges:
“Steven Tyler
Style: Pure rock star excess, from the crazy hair to the the crazier clothes to the craziest commentary.
Ego Go-to line: Anything even remotely sexual. ‘Don’t sweat the petty things and don’t pet the sweaty things,’ he told one contestant.
Judging the judge: ‘He’s kind of there but not there. there’s not a lot of meaningful insight…It’s hard for me to give hom a lot of credibility as a real judge because I look at him and think, What am I going to take away from that?’”

NYT story on Jennifer Lopez as a judge:
“Style: Your sympathetic best friend, if that best friend showed up every day in a designer wardrobe.
Ego Go-to Line: Something gushy – ‘It’s a natural gift that you have’ or ‘You’ve had some real shining moments’ – followed by the wiping away of tears.
Judging the judge: Sure Ms. Lopez has ‘passion and intensity’ but she doesn’t have a lot of credibility. ‘Everybody is the most beautiful and the greatest singing talent she’s ever heard. Should JLo ever try to be a real judge, she’d be perfect as a juvenile or family judge, because you need to be a little more synpathetic because of the kind of people coming before you.”

NYT story on Randy Jackson as a judge:
“Style: The father figure, trying to be a tough yet tender replacement after the disapproving dad (Simon Cowell) has run off.
Ego Go-To Line: Well known for ‘Dawg’ or ‘Pitchy.’
Judging the judge: ‘If you walked in a courtrom and saw that he was your judge you’d respect what he says’ Other judge considered him a bit too kind and too dull to be effective. ‘A real judge has to take charge…If Mr. Jackson ever heard a defendant plead guilty, he’d probably reply with a sympathetic Yo, dawg! You can’t plead guilty!’”

The quirks & queeps of the Celebrity Judges are a good part of the reason this show is slipping somewhat in popularity, rather than growing.
Imagine what they could do with this show if they cut about 70% out of these huge salaries and used it for finding & developing talent around the country —– with real talent scouts and Judges —- that could produce a really great show from the top 24 up.
The contestants could receive much better compensation for their time and efforts on the show, in entertaining — and the upper level could all get gauranteed contracts that give them a nice foothold in the business – which is really hard to get and keep a real prescence in.
