Two weeks, two surprise results. But this time, there was no save.

Colton Dixon paid for two subpar performances Wednesday night with his “Idol” life.

Dixon, who had a really strong night eight days ago, was someone I thought could end up in the finals. I was wrong. He had never been in the bottom three (like Jessica Sanchez last week) so this was not expected.

Dixon, who didn’t even want to audition with his sister, apologized for his arrogant attitude last night when he said he didn’t care what the  judges thought after he botched both “Bad Romance” and especially “September.”

I thought he was going to land in the bottom three but predicted Elise Testone would go home. Wrong again! Hollie Cavanagh was also in the bottom three but fortunately survived. At least I did predict the proper bottom three.

Based on the polls, all seven of the remaining singers have sizable fan bases so expect the unexpected in the coming weeks. The only person to date who has evaded the bottom three now is Phillip Phillips. But as Colton learned, that doesn’t mean anything.

[My colleague Melissa Ruggieri caught Mandisa, who finished ninth season five, at the Dove Awards at the Fabulous Fox Theatre. Read the kind words Mandisa has to say about Colton.]

[UPDATE: Queen will be the theme next week, with Roger Taylor and Brian May joining in as mentors. The top 8 season five sang Queen, too. Katy Perry and Stefano Langone will perform on the results show.]

Jimmy’s take:

Joshua: “Joshua did a lot of good for himself. He stayed in his sweet spot. He was very very comfortable… he could end up in the finals.”

Hollie: “Hollie did come out of her shell. Giving her ‘Son of a Preacher Man” was very clever. Does it keep her out of the bottom three. I don’t think so. To make it to the finals will be a long road ahead of her.”

Skylar: “Each week, she gets better and better. In my opinion, she’s the best performer we’ve got.”

Elise: The Marvin Gaye song “Let’s Get It On” “caused a baby boom. Last night, no baby boom. Because of that choice, Elise will spend time in her vacation home in the bottom three if not go home. She needs to find the most potent rock songs and sang the way she sang Led Zeppelin” to make the top two.

Phillip: “Phillip did a great job with that Usher song. He really fell into it. He could have written that song. Midnight Hour, I could take it or leave it. That was a pass.”

Colton: ” ‘Bad Romance’ was completely wrong, the way he looked, the way he positioned himself, the way he sang it. The look, I was stunned. It was somewhere between 1985 Billy Idol, ‘TRL’ and Spider-Man on Broadway. He can come back. He’s got to re-group and get better songs. Phillip is picking better songs.”

Jessica: “This girl is singing songs that are too old for her. People are not going to relate… as her mentor, I have to apologize, I should have caught that.”

Other elements:

- A jubilant “Dancing in the Streets” group sing, a pleasant “Vision of Love” by Kris Allen, a sweet tribute to Dick Clark, a ridiculous “Sorry for Party Rockin’ ” by LMFAO and a passably starry-eyed Ford ad.  And Taylor Hicks came on to say he’s going to Vegas, with no details. (On Twitter, he said he’ll have a three-month residency at Bally’s on the strip starting in June.)

Previous poster was curious about the Nicholas Sparks’ canon – these are Sparks books turned into movies:
“A Walk to Remember”
“The Notebook”
“Dear John”
“The Last Song”
“Nights on Rodanthe”
“Message in a Bottle”
“The Lucky One”

Love and tragedy occur in all of them

Gotta love Slezak’s view of LMFAO:

two neon-clad cavepersons crawled out the bottom of a tequila bottle and vomited some notes (and probably some phlegm) into the audience.

And this from Mr Slezak:

* Ten years from now, Idol historians will probably call Phillip’s libidinous “Hey, what’s your number? Does your daddy let you date?” — captured on video backstage Wednesday after his post-performance flirtation with J.Lo — the turning point in the race for the Season 11 crown.

Jenny: Said it many times, my fave all time Idol performance is Kelly’s “Stuff Like That There”, and someone this week, maybe JT or Alex (?) posted a list of the top 50 Idol performances ever – not sure where it was from, and that was the #1 pick as well. All of Kelly’s performances were perfection, but she just shone like a 1000 Watt bulb on this one.

I think it WAS time for colton to go, his voice was not that great. Just seemed good thanks to the backup singers. He did look wild but he never sung the part. Glad he is gone. Elise needs to sing songs like pat benatar or joan jett or even sing women songs like “Black Velvet”. Joshua is TOO gospelly(is that even a word). Hollie not ready….my 2 favorites are skylar and phillip……..

Thanks Sam! That is a good one, I’ve seen it on YouTube.

Phil is cute, I’ll give y’all that! And I cracked up at “does your daddy let you date?”

I felt so bad watching him sit with his head in his hands while Colton sang out, and Elise trying to comfort him.

I wish wish wish I could like his singing. I really want to. It would be so nice to finally have my favorite win. :-( I liked him in the beginning… I don’t know what happened. (wait, yes I do, it was “Movin Out” that soured me. :-( )

Except at the time, I couldn’t get behind David because he was Michael’s rocker competition. I wish I’d been able to appreciate his performances more while he was on the show. I think he’s great now!

This week, for the very first time, I could see Elise having a successful career. She seems to be an old soul.
The teenage girls are driving the vote and they are pushing for Phillip. Skylar has her work cut out for her to beat him. He is not my taste. Seems like he takes songs from many different genres and applies his bland style to make them all sound the same.

Hollie haters need to listen to her with their eyes closed. She is amazing, but totally devoid of stage presence.
Joshua is absolutely amazing some weeks and lukewarm other weeks. I would love to see him win but I’m not holding my breath.
Jessica is similar to Joshua in that she has some great and some off weeks. Her lows are lower than Joshua’s in my book.
I will really miss Colton. He was sweet, cute and had a musical style all his own. His fashion style was far too 80’s for my taste. I actually enjoyed his Bad Romance performance, but September fell flat.
I’m pulling for Joshua and Skylar even though I don’t listen to country or mainstream gospel.

That was Bo’s best moment. Not too many people knew of Badlands and for Bo to sing their song acapella was impressive.

His next best moment, for ME (channeling my inner Randy Jackson), was “Whipping Post” by the Allman Brothers. I don’t know if any other contestant has sung their songs.

Jenny

Alex, seeing him on last night’s show just reminded me how much I disliked him. It made me remember how cocky he appeared to get toward the end, with all the constant “Woooo!!!”ing and “Soul Patrol!!!”ing. That is one Vegas show you could not pay me to go see….

Jenny

Jenny

You know, if he did, I would probably like him. Maybe I should hope for that.

Aren’t there some “contestants’ free choice” weeks near the end, when they do 2 and 3 songs each?

Jenny

April 20th, 2012
5:43 pm

And that makes me think, with Phil, it may be the genres he picks that I am disliking so much. I’m not a big Genesis fan… I don’t like Usher at all… and as far as his style, I’m just not a huge Dave Matthews fan. I like “Crash Into Me”, but that’s about it.

He could do Southern Rock for sure… If he’d come out and sing some Allman Brothers, CCR, R.E.M., even Atlanta Rhythm Section, LeRoux… I’d probably love him.

It’s the songs. I’ve come to the conclusion, it’s the songs.

Just wanted to make a few observations. First, I find it really disturbing that there are so many nasty “attacks” are being made against individual singers. Regardless of whether you support them or not, I suggest that standing on a stage in front of twenty million viewers and singing two songs is difficult enough, and when you add the stress of potentially being voted off based on a bad performance, then I suspect there will be occasional performances that may not live up to some of your expectations. If any of you think you could do a better job than any of these performers, then I suggest you hitch your shorts up next auditions and see if you’re good enough to even make it to Hollywood.

Now off my soapbox. Colton admitted this morning that he probably picked the wrong song for his voting fans with his choice of Lady Gaga. He said he really hadn’t thought it through. The problem, however, in my opinion, is that Colton also had a really bad night singing as neither of his songs sounded good, so there was really nothing there to encourage voters to pick up the phones anyway.

For those of you who didn’t notice, when Colton’s name was called, Phillip became very upset, which I suspect will draw a large portion of Colton’s fans his way. Like it or not, that genuine reaction of affection for Colton by Phillip will be appreciated by his fans and I think they will show that appreciation by supporting him instead. Just a hunch.

Based on past AI winners and this year’s votes, I believe the two finalists will be Phillip and Skylar.

Looking at my prediction list I had Colton leaving in 8th place. I’m doing good this year.

I wrote that “skunk boy finally crashes and burns when he incorrectly follows the judges advice.” Well he didn’t follow the judges advice, but he did crash and burn.

So far my top 4 are still in it with #9, and #13 also still in play. Better predictions than I have ever made in seasons past.

JT, good predictions. I admire you… Most seasons, I have a good idea who America’s going to pick… but it’s usually not who I want, and I am so darn stubborn I can’t get myself to put it into a prediction.

I HATE admitting that yea, it will probably be WGWG vs. twang in the finals. :-(

Queen is another 70’s/ 80’s songbook of overplayed, run-in-the ground songs. Due to the popularity of the band and their music at the time, many songs have been done so often since on classic radio, etc. — that most people, even from that era, are just tired of hearing them.

The current teen/20’s/30’s generation does not identify with those songs much. They have been doing this same stuff for 11 years now, This show could be gaining and growing every year, but the ages of the decision-makers and kick-backs to and from the music publishers on the songrights – have left it stagnant.

This songbook will take-out one of the girls easily, and leave a few more people along the way, that wonder why these young artists can’t find a good, current song to sing.

Deirdre

April 20th, 2012
7:36 pm

Glenn, most of us here are pretty kind to the singers. There are always a few bad eggs that show up after a performance show or after results and say stupid stuff about the singers. You’ll find that on just about any blog and we tend to ignore them. There are a lot of people in this world who can’t feel good about themselves without putting other people down.

Deirdre

I am curious to know what else they’ll be singing. Colton, during his media event today, said he was going to sing The Show Must Go On but he did not mention a second song so I’m going to guess that he was told not to reveal theme 2.

Jenny

Dang. That would’ve been a song that better fit one of the girls. One less that they can do… unless they re-assign it?

Random thoughts from a bit of reading from this blog and elsewhere this evening:

I would never be able to call anyone a friend who would say “Good” to the passing of a person known for simply being a musician, part-time actor and more importantly a husband and father.

“I was saddened to learn of the death of my fellow Arkansan Levon Helm. Levon was one of America’s great musicians. His music, with the Hawks, the Band, and throughout his career, and his standout performance in Coal Miner’s Daughter, touched a cord with me and with many Americans. He never forgot his roots. I was always grateful that he helped the annual Delta Blues Festival get off the ground. He will be deeply missed.” — Bill Clinton

@iron eagle – I did see Tony Vincent (and his wife Aspen) in the Las Vegas WWRY show and would have loved to have seen it in London. Thoroughly enjoyed it and was dismayed that he was cut on The Voice.

Speaking of Las Vegas the announcement on AI and the link on the front page here that Taylor Hicks is the first AI alumnus to get a Las Vegas “residency” show got me curious. Upon further review he has eight weeks scheduled for the Indigo Lounge at Bally’s. If you should wish to catch him there it shouldn’t be too difficult as it appears there is no cover charge for the lounge.

I guess it is hard to be objective in a medium that is entirely subjective and a musician friend of mine cannot even conceive of how you can compete or battle with music anyway. I guess the only people in an ideal world I would expect to remain objective would be the producers and their “judges” but it’s not an ideal world.

Lastly, how does one do Bohemian Rhapsody in 100 seconds?

Mildly suprised to say the least of Colton getting the boot over Elsie. i do think he has a smidgen of an edge over Elsie.

That was a dreadful performance of a very Nice song. SEPTEMBER..and he changed it so much No one would have guessed it was the same Earth Wind & Fire September which is constantly in rotation on the radio. A fatal move that costed him his slot.

Its all boils down to song choice at this level in the show, and putting your ALL into it and not relying on your past weeks performances because it does not matter how well you sang last week. Its about your Present performance. He may have been ok in the past. but thats not good enough and choosing the wrong song and changing it up like he did..well he himself understood what caused him to fall out of the boat, hopefully he hasent drowned and can swim to shore in the massive waters of the music world. good luck.

Elsie should definately keep her suitcase packed she will be going shortly after.

I dont know why folks are upset..Taylor Hicks is a prime example of its NO BIG DEAL TO WIN the IDOL TITLE..if not for Hicks showing up and the flash of his pic in the opening intro of idol..him Kris Allen, Daivd Cook..no one would remember they won the title. I for one forgot all about Kris Allen until I saw him last night and his performace was just ok for me. Nothing I would dash out to purchase or pay to see in concert..Yawn*
