Colton Dixon had rough night and paid for it. CREDIT: Michael Becker/FOX
Two weeks, two surprise results. But this time, there was no save.
Colton Dixon paid for two subpar performances Wednesday night with his “Idol” life.
Dixon, who had a really strong night eight days ago, was someone I thought could end up in the finals. I was wrong. He had never been in the bottom three (like Jessica Sanchez last week) so this was not expected.
Dixon, who didn’t even want to audition with his sister, apologized for his arrogant attitude last night when he said he didn’t care what the judges thought after he botched both “Bad Romance” and especially “September.”
I thought he was going to land in the bottom three but predicted Elise Testone would go home. Wrong again! Hollie Cavanagh was also in the bottom three but fortunately survived. At least I did predict the proper bottom three.
Based on the polls, all seven of the remaining singers have sizable fan bases so expect the unexpected in the coming weeks. The only person to date who has evaded the bottom three now is Phillip Phillips. But as Colton learned, that doesn’t mean anything.
[My colleague Melissa Ruggieri caught Mandisa, who finished ninth season five, at the Dove Awards at the Fabulous Fox Theatre. Read the kind words Mandisa has to say about Colton.]
[UPDATE: Queen will be the theme next week, with Roger Taylor and Brian May joining in as mentors. The top 8 season five sang Queen, too. Katy Perry and Stefano Langone will perform on the results show.]
Jimmy’s take:
Joshua: “Joshua did a lot of good for himself. He stayed in his sweet spot. He was very very comfortable… he could end up in the finals.”
Hollie: “Hollie did come out of her shell. Giving her ‘Son of a Preacher Man” was very clever. Does it keep her out of the bottom three. I don’t think so. To make it to the finals will be a long road ahead of her.”
Skylar: “Each week, she gets better and better. In my opinion, she’s the best performer we’ve got.”
Elise: The Marvin Gaye song “Let’s Get It On” “caused a baby boom. Last night, no baby boom. Because of that choice, Elise will spend time in her vacation home in the bottom three if not go home. She needs to find the most potent rock songs and sang the way she sang Led Zeppelin” to make the top two.
Phillip: “Phillip did a great job with that Usher song. He really fell into it. He could have written that song. Midnight Hour, I could take it or leave it. That was a pass.”
Colton: ” ‘Bad Romance’ was completely wrong, the way he looked, the way he positioned himself, the way he sang it. The look, I was stunned. It was somewhere between 1985 Billy Idol, ‘TRL’ and Spider-Man on Broadway. He can come back. He’s got to re-group and get better songs. Phillip is picking better songs.”
Jessica: “This girl is singing songs that are too old for her. People are not going to relate… as her mentor, I have to apologize, I should have caught that.”
Other elements:
- A jubilant “Dancing in the Streets” group sing, a pleasant “Vision of Love” by Kris Allen, a sweet tribute to Dick Clark, a ridiculous “Sorry for Party Rockin’ ” by LMFAO and a passably starry-eyed Ford ad. And Taylor Hicks came on to say he’s going to Vegas, with no details. (On Twitter, he said he’ll have a three-month residency at Bally’s on the strip starting in June.)

Are you serious? THAT’s Constantine??? Wow, I never even liked him that much on Idol. He’s doing a GREAT job!

Great huh? I put it on GrooveShark, and one day it was playing and I thought “why did I put Queen on this?” (not a real big fan, so wouldn’t have put Queen on) – then looked at the playlist and realized it was Constantine.
Deirdre and I were both big fans of Constantine’s. Funny because the first few weeks I didn’t like him and thought he was creepy, but there was a show that changed all that for me. Even shed a couple tears at his early departure!

I loved Constantine. He was a really good singer but he kept shooting himself in the foot with the cheesy, smarminess.

The tough thing about performing Queen’s music is the complexity of quite a few of their biggest hits. The backing vocals are very prominent and can easily drown out an AI contestant thus preventing them from showcasing their voice. I believe I will be totally underwhelmed next Wednesday night.
As a side note, Queen’s drummer, Roger Taylor, is a very gifted musician capable of playing numerous instruments. In addition, and I learned this back in the 70s, he has a 4-octave voice. He’s the one who hits the glass shattering “for me…for me…for MEEEEEEEEEEE” on Bohemian Rhapsody just before the thumping guitar riff.

As I remember, that season I didn’t care at all who stayed or went, as long as Carrie was safe.
I think at one point I was worried that Constantine was getting a “cute boy” following (though I also thought he was creepy at first) and might be a threat to Carrie’s votes. So I was actually glad when he was voted off.

Agreed. When he would make that brooding face I would just cringe. But the KING of cheese on AI is Cheese Puff Daddy (aka Michael Lynche). He should have gone into WWF. Their fans seem to like hams who kiss their biceps and all that.

Alex, exactly. The dramatic backing vocals and harmonies are one of the things I LOVE about Queen… but I remember that being a concern the last time. I am thinking Katharine definitely got drowned out a bit on “Who Wants To Live Forever.”

Someone called the lymphoma boys (LMFAO)”basically a Vegas act” … and there was Taylor Hicks talking about going to Vegas – will he hide in the zebra head?
Jenny – thanks for the Adam audition. Good to see the fourth judge… would love to see her in JLo’s place next season. Didn’t I read that Adam is “helping” Queen? He’d be a great guest on results night!

One final note and then I have to go to work – I have a gig…!
As I stated a moment ago, Lebron is technically a better athlete than Brian McCann, but that doesn’t mean I have to like him more; however, sports is objective. The one who can run faster and jump higher gets more points and therefore he wins.
Music is subjective – thank God. Josh may be able to sing higher notes and hold them out longer than Phil can, but there’s no rule that says we all have to like him more because of it. If there were, we’d all have to listen to opera.
Time to go set up the drums. BTW, as a drummer, I’d rather listen to Elvin Jones than Buddy Rich, despite the FACT that technically Buddy was the greatest who ever lived. ;=P

Oh, wow, Sam. I wonder if that’s what they’re planning!! Or Adam could even mentor… he has before! (Was it last season?)
Though I think I read that something happened with scheduling and he’s not filling in for Queen after all. (Hope I’m wrong, but pretty sure I read it.)

There is a Queen song I’d recommend for Elise – “Hammer to Fall”. It had an upbeat rhytym and was always a big concert favorite. She could possibly belt out the lyrics and now get drowned out since the background harmonies are short and sweet.

Music is subjective, as evidenced by the fact that even LFMAO has enough fans to get them a gig on Idol.
(but wait, Mercedes, what do you mean “the lymphoma boys? are they a charity act? if so I apologize for making fun of them.)
And actually, there have been worse acts on Idol results before. Do y’all remember that awful Keisha (I just refuse to type its name using a dollar sign) that was on a couple of years ago? It wasn’t even music! Time for my favorite Simon quote again:
“What. The. H – – -. Was THAT??”

By the way, no knock to any contestant but this man considers Freddie Mercury to have one of the greatest Rock voices of all time. No way ANY of these contestants can even come close to topping him. I know, I know, the judges will give J&J standing Os, but it will be such a obvious sham that it could backlash again. (Here’s hoping_.

@Lark. No one is calling anybody wrong. Everyone is free to choose, whether the reasoning makes sense to others or not. Just one opinion on the vocal prowess of PP. I respect PP as a person, and Roho’s interview helped me see how much of a cool guy he is, without knowing him personally. But personality doesn’t carry the bulk of the vote for me.
However, if an apple is red and the orange is spoiled…….guess which one I’m going with.

Alex, Kat’s Queen song (Who Wants To Live Forever) might also work for Hollie.
I was having a hard time thinking of one for her too.
I hope she pulls a huge surprise “moment” next week. The theme sure doesn’t favor her… if I didn’t know better, I’d think they want her gone. (insert sarcasm here.)</i)

G, exactly on PP. And my biggest issue is not with him, but with America… for once again picking the plain-vanilla WGWG, in a year of such diverse and excellent talent. What’s wrong with a change just for once?
Deirdre said earlier that “As long as we’ve enjoyed the ride, we’ll be back again.” My worry is that I’ll stop enjoying the ride once it comes down to Phil and Skylar. And I love this show. I don’t want to get bored and stop watching.

Idol is 11 seasons old. How much longer can any of us still “enjoy the ride”?
And re Queen being a bad fir for Hollie….Queen is a bad fit for ALL of them. Queen’s music is difficult, unique and operatic….I can only see Joshua coming out of this unscathed…maybe.

I don’t know D… I still enjoy the ride! For me, it’s seeing what they pick every week, especially when it’s a theme I love… seeing what they do with old songs I’d half forgotten, or new songs I didn’t know.
It’s the surprises, like Colton last week with “Love The Way You Lie”… (though I was fine seeing him leave last night, I bought that song on iTunes and love it!)
And most of all, it’s when one of them pulls off a “moment”. I’m usually won over, at least for that week, even if it wasn’t my fave. Remember Lakisha Jones with “And I Am Telling You (I’m Not Going)”? Kat, with “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”? The original and first of the change-up trend, Blake Lewis with “You Give Love A Bad Name”? (I couldn’t stop watching that one!) Even poor old Off-Key Lee with “Hallelujah” and the choir.

Hey, good question for a Friday… What were your favorite Idol “moment” songs?
And Cat, yes, I think that might be a good pick for Jessica or Hollie! Actually, now that I think about it, Carly Smithson did it too, and fairly well as I remember.

Jenny Mr Lambert is going to sing with them in July– Hammersmith Apollo and the Moscow show as far as I know is still a go but on a different date— the festival was cancelled so they decided to still do it
saw him with them on MTV awards in Dublin… he has the pipes for sure i am hoping that a cross between his works and theirs will give everyone one heck of a concert to see….. if not so close to the convention i would go and am disappointed i cant (i orgainzed the convention too much to do)

Correction: Queen will not be a bad fit for everyone because we have Skylar. She will take every song and make it her brand of Country.
If the theme were Beatles, we’d have Country Beatles, Metallica theme, we’d have Country Metallica, and if we had a rap theme, you guessed it, we’d have Country Rap.
