Colton Dixon had rough night and paid for it. CREDIT: Michael Becker/FOX
Two weeks, two surprise results. But this time, there was no save.
Colton Dixon paid for two subpar performances Wednesday night with his “Idol” life.
Dixon, who had a really strong night eight days ago, was someone I thought could end up in the finals. I was wrong. He had never been in the bottom three (like Jessica Sanchez last week) so this was not expected.
Dixon, who didn’t even want to audition with his sister, apologized for his arrogant attitude last night when he said he didn’t care what the judges thought after he botched both “Bad Romance” and especially “September.”
I thought he was going to land in the bottom three but predicted Elise Testone would go home. Wrong again! Hollie Cavanagh was also in the bottom three but fortunately survived. At least I did predict the proper bottom three.
Based on the polls, all seven of the remaining singers have sizable fan bases so expect the unexpected in the coming weeks. The only person to date who has evaded the bottom three now is Phillip Phillips. But as Colton learned, that doesn’t mean anything.
[My colleague Melissa Ruggieri caught Mandisa, who finished ninth season five, at the Dove Awards at the Fabulous Fox Theatre. Read the kind words Mandisa has to say about Colton.]
[UPDATE: Queen will be the theme next week, with Roger Taylor and Brian May joining in as mentors. The top 8 season five sang Queen, too. Katy Perry and Stefano Langone will perform on the results show.]
Jimmy’s take:
Joshua: “Joshua did a lot of good for himself. He stayed in his sweet spot. He was very very comfortable… he could end up in the finals.”
Hollie: “Hollie did come out of her shell. Giving her ‘Son of a Preacher Man” was very clever. Does it keep her out of the bottom three. I don’t think so. To make it to the finals will be a long road ahead of her.”
Skylar: “Each week, she gets better and better. In my opinion, she’s the best performer we’ve got.”
Elise: The Marvin Gaye song “Let’s Get It On” “caused a baby boom. Last night, no baby boom. Because of that choice, Elise will spend time in her vacation home in the bottom three if not go home. She needs to find the most potent rock songs and sang the way she sang Led Zeppelin” to make the top two.
Phillip: “Phillip did a great job with that Usher song. He really fell into it. He could have written that song. Midnight Hour, I could take it or leave it. That was a pass.”
Colton: ” ‘Bad Romance’ was completely wrong, the way he looked, the way he positioned himself, the way he sang it. The look, I was stunned. It was somewhere between 1985 Billy Idol, ‘TRL’ and Spider-Man on Broadway. He can come back. He’s got to re-group and get better songs. Phillip is picking better songs.”
Jessica: “This girl is singing songs that are too old for her. People are not going to relate… as her mentor, I have to apologize, I should have caught that.”
Other elements:
- A jubilant “Dancing in the Streets” group sing, a pleasant “Vision of Love” by Kris Allen, a sweet tribute to Dick Clark, a ridiculous “Sorry for Party Rockin’ ” by LMFAO and a passably starry-eyed Ford ad. And Taylor Hicks came on to say he’s going to Vegas, with no details. (On Twitter, he said he’ll have a three-month residency at Bally’s on the strip starting in June.)

Rickster, if I were to be asked what Jennifer’s judging style was I think the best answer may just be “a mullet”.
Steven Tyler’s style is sleepy and lazy.
Randy’s style is to name drop, say “pitchy” when he doesn’t like it, and to throw out other clichés when he does.
Jennifer’s style is a mullet.

“Mike, 3 black girls were in the bottom 3 and Elton John said it proved that America was racist.”
Right! And last night, the bottom three were all blonde. This PROVES that Americans only like dark-haired white people.

Regarding next week. Who will sing Bohemian Rhapsody ? Whoever does as long as they sing it decent (Not too much screaming) will be safe. I can see Joshua singing “Somebody to Love” It has a lot of range in it. As far as Jessica, how is she going to sing age appropriate songs. I am trying to remember what Paris Bennett sang; I think it was “The game is over” or something like that. That might work. Please nobody sing Flash!!

They should be singing 2 songs each next week and I doubt they will both be from Queen. I think there’s more to next week’s theme than we’ve heard so far.

@ Deirdr @ 11:03am Ok you got me on this one.
I will admit, I am sensitive to the splitting of votes thing along ethnic lines..cause I will be honest. I dont care what someone’s background is, if they sing well, regardless of the genre. And understanding that something that G pointed out, different genres of music, different styles are more prevalent.
If you like R&B/Soul/..Melisma is more prevalent as well as reaching the upper register…that Country fans will see as over-singing or screaming. As R&B/Soul fans will see Country music as monotonous a little amateruish in singing ability (Definitely not lyrics, because Johnny Cash/Bonnie Raitt universal appealing lyrics cross over).
So the talent is harder to judge this year, because the final contestants are all so different from one another, yet most of them are on the same skill level. So that leaves the voting up to people voting along their favorite genre.
Skylar is going to get the Country, Country-Rock Vote
Jessica should be getting the R&B vote…but does anyone who like R&B watch American Idol anymore after the past couple years where there have been talented people who sang it, but did not advance due to the lack of numbers?
Philip is going to get the indie music votes.
Elise is getting indie votes, my dog died votes, and sympathy votes due to the bashing the judges give her every other week.
Joshua is getting r&b/soul/gospel votes
Hollie is getting….uhm, I cant even call it. Even though she is talented, I can not tell what voter bloc she is appealing towards.
So with this said…on record, Country is the most “bought” music in Ameica, but R&B/Hip-Hop is the most downloaded and played on the airwaves. 3 weeks ago I would have said this is Jessica’s to lose, but people who listen to her genre just do not vote on AI, and has been like that for awhile, so its Skylar’s to lose now.

For Queen week:
Elise should sing Another One Bites The Dust
Joshua should sing God Save The Queen
Jessica should sing Under Pressure
Skylar should sing Fat Bottomed Girls
Hollie should sing Keep Yourself Alive
Phillip should sing We Are The Champions

Shaun, I’m kind of like that myself. I like Joshua, Phil, Jessica and Elise. I admit to being somewhat visceral when it comes to the music I like. If I’m listening to something and it doesn’t make me move in someway, i.e. foot tapping, head bobbing, dancing, then that music isn’t for me. Sometimes I don’t even care how well the song is sung as long as it is in tune and I’m moving.
That probably doesn’t make me a very good judge of music but I like what I like.

I wish they would change the whole format of American Idol to a hunger games setting where they all fight for weeks and whoever is standing alive gets a record deal. THIS would be much better than having them sing karaoke every night – I can get that at my local bar.

From the poll above, appears that slightly more people were in favor of Colton leaving, than were upset by it. Plus a lot of buzz that Colton might be compared to Daughtry leaving early, etc. If so, then the industry won’t pass-up a chance to make money by signing him. But, you don’t see too many Idol’s under the top 5 – from the past – doing much in the Billboard top 100 since the show.
The Music business is more competitive than ever – with so many Independent labels in the U.S. & U.K. bringing fresh talent into the business.

I didn’t lose any sleep over Colton going home. I thought he was the worst of the week. While both he and Phillip are good singers neither were/are great. Entertainers? Yes! Any of the remaining 6 could win although Phillip, Skylar, Jessica and Joshua should reach the final 4. The two guys shouldn’t cut into each others votes and could split Colton’s fan base. Joshua because Some may blame Phillip for Coltons exit. Phillip because in some ways especially CBS (cute boy syndrome) and they are similar in genre. Skylar has the country vote locked up. Jessica probably the R&B with some Pop voters as well. Elise maybe the rockers vote albeit they’re a small fan base. Hollie only has Pop voters so she will probably be out next week. If not her than Elise.
I agree with Deirdre and others who have said the worst thing Phillip could do is win. Scary thing is he probably will. The best thing for him would be a medical exit. Most of the top 10 will sign record deals so the winner doesn’t really matter unless it’s Skyler. If Skyler wins then Idol will get the Country Idol label. She too would be better served not winning. Elise, Jessica, Joshua or Hollie could use the push that comes with winning. That said my dream final Jessica vs Joshua likely won’t happen. Phillip vs Skyler probably will.

@Shaun 11:33 comment. You hit the nail on the head again. Bottom line……r&b/soul fans really don’t watch Idol anymore in big numbers like the past. As some of my friends would say…..”You still watch that lame show? They haven’t had a real singer win since Fantasia.” Being a fan of r&b (whether part-time or full time) can be really frustrating if you watch Idol. I’m willing to bet that XF and The Voice are more popular among 18-49 r&b, pop and rock fans.

True, G. Fair-skinned folks prefer fair-skinned folks, just as dark-skinned folks prefer dark-skinned folks – we’re all guilty! I was being facetious, of course, to illustrate the absurdity of Sir Elton’s comment. He’s guilty, too, in his heart, but too pompous to admit it.

G, according to the ratings, Idol is beating The Voice in the 18 to 49 demographic. The rating system doesn’t really distinguish between 40 year olds who like R&B as compared to 18 year olds who like pop.

If we’re betting, I’d be willing to bet that more viewers are watching Idol than The Voice, not because of the genres featured but because Idol gives the viewers a much better chance to get to know the singers and Idol also relies mostly on viewer voting rather than random eliminations by the judges.
I don’t think the actual choice of music has much to do with it for many people.

Meh, Colton reminded me of “My Pretty Pony”. He had a couple of very good performances but he didn’t even compare to David Cook in my opinion.
Very funny remark about all 3 bottom dwellers being blonde this week yet the race baters go into hiding! It’s a conspiracy against the anglo folks, I tell ya!
At this point and I have never felt this way but I hope whatever the results are, it pisses the judges off each and every week. Their biased approach this year has almost made the show no fun and un-watchable. I hate that too!

Yeah, the Elton John hissy fit about Jennifer Hudson and racism was hilarity at its finest. EJ must not have watched the show much because the final 7 contestants, 4 were black. The 3 black girls were bound to take votes away from each other – much like the judges turned the Hollie-Jessica thing into a competition.
Right, Elton, AI was all racist in Season 3. A black winner, 4 of the top 7 were black, and you even had a girl from Hawaii in the top 3, so technically there were 5 minorities in the top 7. But EJ still flamed and raged.

I have a friend at work who hates Levon Helm. When told Levon had died yesterday, he replied, “Good.” He then went on to argue that Levon’s music was awful, and that this was not just his opinion – it is a FACT (I’m not exaggerating – these were his exact words).
Our Idol judges make this same mistake, confusing their opinions with fact. And so do some who post on this here blog. One has even asserted that since Josh and Jess are “better” than Phil, then Phil’s having never been in the bottom three must mean that the voters are racists.
But if one is going to play that card, then might his own refusal to respect the differing opinion that Phil could possibly be “better” to some than J&J, by his own definition, indicate his own reverse racism?
I’m not bashing. I’m just saying we are all a little bit biased in one way or another. It’s human nature. It doesn’t make the majority wrong and it doesn’t make the minority right. You can whine about it all day, as some do, but it is a tired and futile argument.
I’m just sayin.’

Who is the best performer? The one with the total package, that’s who. The presence, the personality, the poise, the amp at the right time and with the right emphasis that is what it takes. The only one I have seen that meets those expectations is Elise. If you google some of her past work, then you will also see that she has put in the time, effort, patience, fortitude, and sacrifice to pursue her dream. All my best to someone who moves you because her singing comes from her soul due to having the experiences to have one. All my best to Elise. She will always have my vote.

@Dick Lark. One of the reasons I like your posts is that you don’t hide your opinions on here. You don’t avoid topics that are “sensitive” to some and I appreciate that.
On to business. RoHo, no need to referee this one. It’s Friday.
IF the majority of Phil’s fans are white, that DOES NOT make them racist. How could anyone of sound mind come to that opinion? Just because race is injected into the conversation, doesn’t mean there is a racist component at play. Does that make sense? I don’t think anyone on the blog has been racist in their views, unless I missed something. However, there have been many opinions of preference on the blog. Nothing is wrong with having a preference.
I like Dave Mathews, but I can’t stand Phil. PP sounds nothing like Dave, although he tries. Are Jess, Josh, Hollie and Elise better singers than PP? YES. THEY. ARE. Why? They know how to control their voices and sing in key. Matter of fact, they sing in various keys and registers. PP growls when he stumbles upon a note he can’t handle. I have yet to hear him sing clear notes in a song. He tries to manufacture a huskiness to his voice. It’s not a natural thing. Before I move on, is there a racial component to anything I just stated? If so, I’m more than open for discussion.

Yes, I do love “Bohemian Rhapsody”, but even I got tired of it back during “Wayne’s World” and all the covers just don’t do the original justice. Just don’t do it, and don’t do “Fat Bottomed Girls” because that song is just dumb. Unless you get Jennifer Lopez on stage for it, then it would be ok.

Is Lebron James a “better” athlete than Brian McCann? Technically speaking, yes, of course he is. Does that mean I have to like him more? No, I don’t. Yes, it’s comparing apples and oranges because they’re in different sports; but that’s my point.
Is Joshua a “better” singer than Phil? Technically speaking, he probably is he is. Does that mean I have to like him more? No, I don’t. But again, it’s comparing apples and oranges because one is a gospel singer and the other is a rock singer.
Do I like rock more than gospel? YES, I do. Is one genre “better” than the other?
Are apples “better” than oranges? Maybe one is better for you than the other, nutritionally speaking; but I am not wrong if I prefer one over the other. Music is the same way. It’s subjective. There is no right or wrong vote. If more voters prefer Phil they are NOT WRONG.
