Justin Guarini, runner-up season one of “American Idol” a decade ago, knows about being a guinea pig for something potentially big.
So joining the Stephen King/John Mellencamp musical “Ghost Brothers of Darkland County” at the Alliance Theatre was a challenge he welcomed.
And he’s embraced the cast, the music, even the special effects. “It’s been tiring but really good,” he said. “The coolest part is getting direct feedback from Stephen and John and T-Bone [Burnett.] It was inspiring to be able to sit with T-Bone and work with him on these songs, to see how organic his creative process is.”
He loves creating a character nobody has done before. In the play, he plays the older of two present-day sons brought to a cabin by his father Joe. The father had witnessed the death of his two older brothers in that cabin decades earlier and those ghosts remain. “It’s about whether or not Joe can tell the truth about what happened in time to save his family,” he said.
Guarini has found his home in theater. He did two Broadway shows last year (”Women on the Verge,” “American Idiot”) and two regional shows (”Chicago,” “Rent”). Now married, he also had a baby, who is now ten months old. And yes, William Neko Bell Guarini has a mop of curly hair – of course.
For this play, he cut his own curly hair down to be a Southern rock musician. The music, he noted, is very swampy-like blues and rock. “It’s so much fun to sing,” he said.
Guarini, who grew up outside Philadelphia but spent summers as a child in Atlanta (mostly Candler Park) with his dad Eldrin Bell, said he’d like to move from Los Angeles to New York, home of Broadway. “Musical theater is a great fit for me,” he said. He admitted he was a bit unfocused for awhile, dabbling in different things. “I’m putting my nose to the grindstone in theater now.”

Yes indeed. Side topics are fine here, esp. when there isn’t much to talk about on “Idol.”

It’s not that Justin Guarini isn’t a worthy topic. He should come blog with us some more.
Deirdre: “We are probably the least disrespectful group of people that Rodney deals with on a regular basis.”

Seriously Right Said Fred, we’re not trying to be disrespectful. Sometimes it’s hard for us to remember that we’re on a different blog than we used to be on. When the ajc decided to combine Rodney’s two blogs we sometimes forget that we’re the newbies on this one.
We usually stick to the blogs that deal only with American Idol topics or contestants so if we annoy you, just stay away from those. But we do branch out on a lot of topics, so id you are interested, join us.
The only thing we don’t discuss is politics because we’re a mixed group and there’s no point in creating hard feelings among us.
Not that we don’t create hard feelings among ourselves on OTHER topics.
Did I just channel linny…it kinda feels like that

Sam-A, yes, I saw that and you bet I’ll be diving to Alpharetta in August. Pretty nice that she is hitting Atlanta twice in 6 months. Guess she finally heard me.

Speaking of former Idol contestants, (Justin as this blog addresses)
Here’s a tidbit from Andy Williams productions in Missouri. Branson is a great place to see music venues, always a lot going-on.
“”You saw them on TV… you voted to make them famous… now see them live in Branson this Summer!
The Finalists Live! is Branson’s hottest summer show. It features 15 Top 10 Finalists from American Idol®, performing live on stage at the Andy Williams Theater.
The first group includes:
• Lee DeWyze, 2009 Winner of American Idol®
• Blake Lewis, the Beat Box performer who was runner up in 2007
• Elliott Yamin, who place #3 in 2006
• Branson’s own Kimberly Caldwell from season 2003 and host on the Oxygen and TV Guide Channels
• Thia Magia from last year’s American Idol® show
The show is hosted by Pete Peterkin, 2009 Finalist from Americas Got Talent® “”

They couldn’t do any better than that? I would pay to listen to Elliott Yamin, maybe Kimberly Caldwell, but I wouldn’t travel to Branson for it. Nothing against Branson, but I wouldn’t make a trip just for him. Lee, Blake, Thia? It’s like they used a time machine to go forward 10 years and grabbed the people who won’t even make the “Where are they now: Idol Edition” list. The other 10 people aren’t listed, but they are probably more well known than those three.

Branson has a lot of tourist attractions, promo packages sold, – and was originally mostly Country Music oriented. Now it has expanded into whatever might sell a ticket, while people are in the area.
It does give another booking chance for promoters to group performers into a venue – where there is pretty good tourist traffic most of the year. I think Thia is a very, very good vocalist, but she would not draw much of a crowd as a solo performer.

That television program Then Came Bronson has not hurt business either probably even if it is about a pinko hippie who rides one of those motorcycles and annoys people but who is counting?
