AMERICAN IDOL: FINAL 8: Clockwise from L: Skylar Laine, Phillip Phillips, Colton Dixon, DeAndre Brackensick, Elise Testone, Jessica Sanchez, Hollie Cavanagh and Joshua Ledet on AMERICAN IDOL airing Wednesday, March 29 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. CR: Frank Micelotta / FOX.

AMERICAN IDOL: FINAL 8: Clockwise from L: Skylar Laine, Phillip Phillips, Colton Dixon, DeAndre Brackensick, Elise Testone, Jessica Sanchez, Hollie Cavanagh and Joshua Ledet on AMERICAN IDOL airing Wednesday, March 29 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. CR: Frank Micelotta / FOX.

“Idol” went back to my decade, the 1980s, and based on the song choices, it was definitely the softer side of the 80s: a soaring Foreigner ballad, a syrupy Bette Midler ballad, an Irene Cara pop nugget, a Simply Red cover of an R&B classic.

Overall, the top 8 held up fairly well, though a couple of front runners didn’t quite hit the mark. I definitely enjoyed this week better than last week though there were only two standing ovations this time vs. five a week ago.

My biggest surprise: I found DeAndre Brackensick quite enjoyable. DeBarge fit him like a glove. I was pleasantly surprised to see Skylar Laine come back with a strong ballad. And I didn’t get why the judges were so harsh on Hollie Cavanagh. Elise Testone was pedestrian. Colton Dixon and Jessica Sanchez both did solid jobs but my general blah attitude towards both didn’t change. Phillip Phillips was the biggest disappointment, though oversinging Joshua Ledet was not far behind for me.

Tough call tonight who will be in the bottom three. Hollie, Joshua and Elise are the three I feel have targets on their back. Elise, I believe, will go home for doing a decent but not memorable job that won’t generate a lot of intense voting. I think the judges’ acid against Hollie might incite enough of her fans to keep voting. Joshua was over the top in a way that was a total disconnect to the song. I think he will be punished with this first bottom three ranking.

If Elise is at the bottom, will she be saved? I give it a 50/50 shot.

My top 8 in ranking: DeAndre, Skylar, Colton, Hollie, Elise, Jessica, Phillip, Joshua

I expect the rankings among the readers will be all over the place tonight. The Cover it Live blog poll showed a major split in opinion over many contestants. Negatives (% of those who didn’t like a performance) ranged from 19% to 49%. And the highest percentage of people who liked a performance enough to vote was a mere 44%. That’s relatively very low.

Generally, people liked the duets more, especially Joshua and Jessica/ Phillip and Elise combos.

My basic thoughts on each performance:

1- DeAndre (”I Like It” DeBarge, up first) – For the first time, he looked and felt comfortable, relaxed, at ease. He brought a nice mix of his normal voice and falsetto and gave a fun performance. Grade: A/A-minus

2- Skylar (”Wind Beneath My Wings,” pimp spot) – She has never sung anything slow terribly well at this point. But she gave this one just the right level of intensity and emotion. I thoroughly enjoyed it, though a lot of the live bloggers hated it. I’m glad she was able to spread her wings. Grade: A-minus

3- Colton (”Time After Time,” Cyndi Lauper, seventh) – He took a Quietdrive rock version of this classic and did a solid job. I do hate the way he phrases words but he brought a certain level of actual sincerity to this affair. Grade: B-plus

4- Hollie (”Flashdance,” Irene Cara, sixth) – Some live bloggers complained about pitch problems. I thought she really pushed herself here to do something more upbeat and move around the stage. While she wasn’t always spot on, any faults didn’t bug me. She could have brought a wee bit more joy to it but I thought the judges were tougher on her than she deserved. Grade: B-plus

5- Elise (”I Want to Know What Love Is” Foreigner, second)  – Technically, she did a pretty good job but she wasn’t able to transcend the song or give it anything special. It was unmemorable in the end despite the choir. Grade: B

6- Jessica (”How Will I Know” Whitney Houston, fifth) – As usual, on a technical basis, she is great. She looks good. She moves around the stage well. But as usual for me, she is robotic. I don’t feel anything watching her. Grade: B

7- Phillip (”That’s All” Genesis, third) – I appreciate Phil tried to give this his own spin on it but it felt strained and he never quite got into his pocket with it, even with the non-guitar bridge suggested by Tony of No Doubt, one of the guest mentors. This was in my mind his weakest live performance to date but I don’t think it endangers him in any way. Grade: B/B-minus

8- Joshua (”If You Don’t Know Me By Now” Simply Red, fourth) I recall the Simply Red version, which was heartrending, subtle and beautiful. Joshua tried to turn this into a tutorial on runs. There was no sadness, no connection to the lyrics. Someone on the blog thinks he did the Harold Melvin 1972 version but I went on YouTube to hear him to do it and no, he was restrained, too. Overwrought is the best adjective.  Grade: C

The duets were all interesting. My quick thoughts on them:

Skylar & Colton “Islands in the Stream”: Strangest combo for sure. Skylar sang circles around Colton, who did his best outside his comfort zone.  I noticed they cut the lyric “makin’ love with each other, uh huh.” Grade: B-plus

DeAndre & Hollie “I’m So Excited” : Cheesy as all get out but the two went with it. Hollie, more relaxed than normal, excelled. DeAndre harmonized well with Hollie. Grade: A-minus

Phillip & Elise “Stop Draggin My Heart Around” : I seldom like Elise but in this case, she was perfect in Stevie’s role. Phillip countered her well, even with his distracting Joe Cocker mannerisms. There even seemed to be a connection between the two. Grade: A

Jessica & Joshua “I Knew You Were Waiting”: For some reason, this song works well when over-emoted and both can do that in spades. They may not have a lot of chemistry, but they enjoyed themselves and it worked. Grade: A-minus

1. Joshua. He finally hit the right balance between gospel and pop. Lovely!

2. Colton: Really good version of the song

3. Jessica: Well done!

4. Phil: Not his best but still more entertaining than most

5. Elise: Stick with rocking the roof!

6. Skylar: Not my thing but she sang with emotion and depth

7. Hollie: mechanical

8. Deandre: better than he’s been before which is still pretty awful

From end of last thread: Hey D, let’s just agree to disagree. Hollie can be mechanical, yes… but listen to that voice. And she wasn’t mechanical tonight. She looked to me like she was having fun!

And Carrie was wooden on Idol, but I loved her every step of the way.

So let’s just put it aside… we agree on many things, but not this… and it frustrates me hearing you state it like an absolute fact that Hollie isn’t good. I happen to think she is. So… Truce? :-)

And the other thing I said before realizing there was a new thread…

I voted tonight, for the first time in a very long time. For Hollie. And I’ll vote some more for her before midnight.

Out off all seasons: this has got to be the best one to date If I were a producer I wouldn’t hesitate to give anyone of these guys a contract. I can’t pick a favorite but Jessica, Phil, Colton, Elise and Skylar are In my top 5 list. My prediction is that all though Jessica seems to be is the one to beat she will not take the title this year but she surely she deserves it that voice is flawless!!!!

My rankings… I think I will follow Jon’s lead, and put them in tiers, as I didn’t have a super clear first, second, third, etc. tonight.

Top tier:

Jessica – Excellent. I had a feeling she might be the one to take on another Whitney song. Why wouldn’t she, after “I Will Always Love You”? And she did a great job.

Elise, Hollie, Colton – liked them all, though I’m a bit worried Elise may get forgotten. She hasn’t been a big audience fave until last week, and going second may hurt her.

Hollie – well, y’all know my thoughts from my many comments with D. I love her and I think the judges crucified her. I hope there’s backlash from the voters, because that wasn’t deserved. I know it spurred me to vote.

And Colton did very well with TIme After Time! He’s really beginning to grow on me.

Middle tier:

Joshua and Skylar. Skylar was the best I’ve seen her in a while, but tthat doesn’t mean I like her. She was good for her, but sooooo nasal. She did look pretty, though. And Joshua, again, started out wonderfully but then overdid it.

Seventh:

Phil. I liked him better this week than the past couple of weeks, but that’s not saying a lot. Still don’t love his growling.

And bringing up the rear:

Deandre. He’s not quite as awful when he tempers the falsetto…. but he’s still really, really bad.

Jenny, I’m stating an opinion, just like you are. I think Hollie was mechanical tonight. You don’t. I’m not going to temper my opinions to help you feel better. I’m not asking you to stop complaining about Phil’s faces. You don’t like him. I do! Please don’t ask me to stop expressing my opinions.

And ranking the duets: I liked Phil and Elise the best. That was fun! Islands in the Stream was fun too, and Skylar did pretty well! Jessica and Josh sang very well together… they almost made me like the song. And I really can’t stand the Pointer Sisters song, but Hollie sang her part well. (No comment on Deandre.)

I am starting to think Hollie is being treated like Siobhan Magnus was. Such a talent, and she listens and listens, and tries and tries, but still gets put down no matter what she does. It’s really a shame when someone seems to be a scapegoat. Who was it that commented they want her out and “What must she have done to upset them?” I’m really beginning to wonder.

IMO(please note Jenny) this season is really good. There’s such a large number of contestants who, from one week to another, show us a level of talent that we haven’t seen on Idol for awhile…at least in these numbers.

Colton, Jessica, Elise, Phil, Joshua have all shown us moments that impress us. Hollie and Skylar have good voices and even Deandre shows a spark of talent when he avoids that crazy falsetto.

All in all, a good season so far with a pretty large group of talented performers. I couldn’t pick a winner right now because, each week, someone else stands out.

Jenny, I’m ok with you liking Hollie. Why wouldn’t I be? I never felt the need for a “truce”. I never felt like I was arguing with you specifically on the subject so I was a little taken aback by the suggestion that I was stating my opinion as an “absolute fact”. ANYTHING I write here regarding the Idols’ abilities is an opinion. It would have to be, wouldn’t it, because who we like as a singer is based only on our opinions, not on facts.

JTesla

Ok, I know I’m just jumping in without knowing all the “facts” but Hollie is the Hottie of this season, can we establish that as a fact and not an opinion?

;)

I actually didn’t mind DeAndre when he was NOT singing falsetto, BUT 3/4ths of the song are falsetto and I just don’t like it. Thats a fact, fact that my opinion is negative on the falsetto. During the non-falsetto parts, he actually sounded good.

What a great night. Especially the duets. For the most part, they were the best of the night by far. I especially loved Colton and Skylar. In fact, I’d say Skylar had the best overall night.

Well, I didn’t want to vomit after Deandre performed and that’s good.

I thought Hollie did very well tonight. She sang two 80’s anthems. And sorry Steven, I didn’t hear any pitch problems with Hollie in her solo performance. Maybe, just maybe a little in her beginning part of the song because it was so low in her register. But, I do think Hollie was better in her duet then she was in her solo. She owned her duet.

I wasn’t feeling Joshua like the judges were…. but this could be because I was playing with my daughter.

I don’t know who’s going home, probably Elise.

P.S. JT, I think Jessica is hotter then Hollie myself. And I’m a WGWG, just for the record.

It’s getting tougher to take a talent and get them up into the top 40, sell albums in major numbers and stay up in the business for very long.

Talent shows in the U.S., U.K. and Australia are producing top 12’s, 7’s, on up to winners — that fade fast against the big machine of the record & entertainment industry.

YouTube exposure and small Independent labels discover and market unique talent in various genres — all competition for the dollars of the music buyer and those who will get off the couch and pay $25, to $95. to see a live show.

While eveyone in the current top 8 are now getting some type of recognition and love from some, and rubbing elbows with some famous-name Mentors and Judges — most under the top 3 will be grist for the mill after the tour — maybe get some gigs and appearances, but better not go in debt for that new Cadillac Escalade unless Mom & Dad & Grandpa have got your back.

The winner will get a nice pre-paid record deal, with cash up-front. 2nd place will get a pre-paid deal on completion of the album and booked appearances as well.

I know, D. I just tend to read too much into things. I do the same thing in my personal life. And it’s probably worse on a blog where you can’t hear the tone in which something’s said. I guess I just got my hackles up, when I should’ve taken it with a grain of salt and thought “two bad weeks in a row” is only D’s personal opinion, not a fact.

I guess I’m just struggling to understand why so many people bash Hollie. She’s pretty, and talented, and has so much potential. I’ve downloaded most of her studio versions and they’re lovely. The bashing just got to me tonight.

And Phil’s faces are truly just a tiny thing that seems to bug only me. It’s not that big a deal. I probably need to stop yapping about it, because I really like his personality a lot and want him to succeed after the show, whether he’s my fave or not.

I need to remember that it’s just a silly tv show, and doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. One of my best friends and I often ask each other why we let ourselves get so worked up over a tv show.

I also even think Skylar is hotter then Hollie. She’s a juicy country gal =D

And by the way, I hated Lauren last year. I really never enjoyed anything by her in the slightest. I also didn’t like Skylar at first during the Hollywood rounds. But that chick as won me over. I think she’s WAY better then our country crap from the prior year that won it all. I also think Skylar is the full package in the way she handles herself. Not saying she’s going to win, but I am saying she will have a future in music. And I think she could be very big.

Wow, opinons are all over the place. I think Phil and Elises duet was the worst by far, but I see it’s getting lots of support? Huh. To me skylar and colton were the best. The harmonies were great. It felt the most comfortable. And I honestly didn’t think I was going to like it. Never was a fan of that song, but they made me enjoy it. Hollie and Deandre were next, but that’s because of Hollie. She absolutely slayed that Pointer Sister tune. It’s too bad her solo performance wasn’t quite as good because this could of been a stand out night for her. Her voice is so raw and good, she lacks that connection with the music that Jessica has.

Well, since I seen many song lyrics around here the other day, and since Hollie took such a bashing by the Judges and some others, I’ll play this song for her:

When the rain is blowin’ in your face
and the whole world is on your case
I would offer you a warm embrace
to make you feel my love

When evening shadows and the stars appear
and there’s no one there to dry your tears
I could hold you – for a million years
to make you feel my love.

I am tired of the judges harsh comments to Hollie. I think they are trying to push her out. I voted for her about 50 times. Also i don’t know why they keep praising Deandre. He is very pitchy.

1. Joshua. — a really moving version — OK, he over sings sometimes but this rendition was pretty balanced.

2. Skylar — Better than the Midler version. Showed she is more than a bouncing Rebatoid. Has charisma and a great voice. If I had to lay a million $ on who would be a commercial success 5 years from now, my $$$ would go here.

3. Phil — very, very original. Not everyone wants original. Lots of folks like McDonalds for dinner. He won’t win for that reason but he is an extremely talented artist and musician. I love the flavor of his voice, the joy in his phrasing, and his Joe Cockerish swagger. He won’t sell millions like Scotty but he is and will be a musical treasure for folks who like to be surprised and delighted by something different.

4. Colton: A liitle nasal tonight but he definitely rocks. And I loved his stretch on Islands in the Stream.

5. Jessica: Technically flawless, …yet bloodless. She is a perfect number 3 in this competition. You need to do more than make people ooh, aah over your voice … you have to make them feel something other than awe.

6. Hollie: She is so young. But she has (IMHO) the best voice in the whole competition. But again, its not just about the voice. I thought the judges overly harsh on her tonight. She’s in big trouble.

7. Deandre: Jimmy is so right about this guy. But the tweenie girls who are heavy voters on AI don’t seem to care. I hate his voice, his mannerisms, and his confectionary commercialism. Though I’ll admit that tonight was one of his less awful performances and he’ll survive another week.

8: Elise: I like Elise but I think she’s DMW (dead man walking). Lou Gramm set the melody and cadence for this unbelievably great song and Elise decided she could do better. WRONG. Elise has always had an arrogance issue and it really bit her in the back this time.

I’ll talk more about it tomorrow, but some of you guys really need to get a clue about Joshua’s rendition of “If You Don’t Know Me by Now”. He said it was the Simply Red version, but he “performed” Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes rendition. That so-called over the top you guys are referring to is called appropriate emotion for this song. Listen to the original and you can’t help but to agree. No, he wasn’t Teddy P, but he interpreted the emotion just as effectively. Joshua was on point and did his thing! Joshua over the top? I’m not falling for the mainstream jedi mind trick. GTFOH! LOL!

Seth T

April 5th, 2012
12:23 am

Note that Rodney’s cover-it-live polling shows 3 girls as the bottom 3. That’s pretty normal for this competition, for the girls to be at a disadvantage —- so if that holds true, Elise or Hollie will be next out.

Skylar had the prime/finale spot, so that usually will save that contestant for the week – at this stage of 8 left anyway.

JTesla

April 5th, 2012
12:25 am

I like Hollie better, more entertaining to me, but I think Jessica beat her tonight when looking at pure vocal skill. And at this stage it is Hollie vs. Jessica. With that in mind, it is now Jessica’s competition to lose. I think she can even take down the guys, Phillip showed some weakness tonight on his solo song. I still liked it, but he had some issues.

Regarding Joshua: I didn’t like the song in the 80’s, I still don’t like it. I don’t mind Joshua being Joshua, it’s just not my thing, but I won’t knock him for it.

Jessica and Phillip were at the top.

Wow, it’s a tie for no.1 between Jessica Sanchez and Joshua Ledet in week 8. Jessica was amazing singing an uptempo song of the great Whitney Houston (How Will I Know) and another uptempo soulful song of (I Knew You Were Waiting) by the QUEEN OF SOUL ARETHA FRANKLIN and George Michael…a duet w/ Joshua. First of all, I loved that she wore pants and denim jacket on the Whitney song and she looked AMAZING on that dress when she sang the Aretha song. Both of them didn’t just ROCKED IT AND SLAYED IT but they were actually better than the original…pls. check the youtube video of the original….WOW!!! AMAZING, PHENOMENAL, SUPERB AND BRILLIANT!!! Jessica is so versatile and her vocal range is fantastic and her pitch is perfect!!! She can sing in different genres of music…from soul tonight, to r&b last week, to gospel w/ Billy Joel song, to pop, to urban, to rap and to ballad. She is Phenomenal!!!

Morning!

Do y’all remember the big controversy during season 3 when 3 African-American girls were in the bottom 3?(lot’s of 3’s in that sentence) Elton John announced to the world that it was clear proof that America was racist. Idiot! It was clear proof that America votes by genre more than anything else and there stood 3 diva-style singers because the votes got divided between the all of them.

This is what is happening to Hollie. She and Jessica sing the same style of music and Jessica is clearly the better singer. It doesn’t matter how good she is or isn’t, just like it didn’t matter how good JHud or Trynese were with Fantasia out-performing them every night.

If votes are being divided between Jessica and Hollie, Jessica is going to come out the winner.

That’s just my opinion. ;-)

Morning – and thank you Jenny, for voting for Hollie. I could neither see/hear her nor vote since our power was knocked out last night – happens EVERY time we have a hard rain – a nd phones and computers are connected to wretched Comcast.

Sad to see that the judges are back to the same method used to get rid of promising girls (Pia, Siobhan) – beat them over the head about their “boring ballads” (which the viewers loved) and make them try something NOT their style, and boom, they disappear. If Hollie goes tonight because of this, I’m done with Idol. At least I won’t have to read Deirdre’s constant harping on Hollie anymore…

Ok…thanks Mercedes, You’re a peach!

IMO, voting for someone the judges dump on is a waste of time. Sure, they stay this week but what happens after that? Do the judges have to keep complaining just to keep you voting?

Here’s a question: Do you think Hollie should win this season? If you don’t, if you think someone is better, then WHY would you vote for her? Because you feel sorry for her? Because it’s too soon for her to go home(we’ve already pretty much established that when a contestant leaves the competition has very little effect on whether they will be successful or not)

Personally, I’d rather see Deandre go home tonight but I don’t think that will happen. I think we will lose a FAR better singer than either Deandre OR Hollie. I think Elise will go home tonight because so many people decided to save poor little picked-on Hollie instead of poor picked-on Elise!

“At least I won’t have to read Deirdre’s constant harping on Hollie anymore…”

lol, i always thought she gave Jessica a harder time then Hollie.

I want to like Joshua, but when he’s singing I make it a point to look away from the TV and really focus on what he sounds like. And guys, if that screaming, and I think he screams more then Adam Lambert did, but if that screaming came on the car radio you couldn’t turn it fast enough. He lacks finesse and control to make a song pleasant.

And on the duets, I just didn’t like how Elise and Phil’s vocals meshed. They’ve got too distinct of a voice and it came off weird to me. Elise has a lot of trouble in her upper range. When she stretches herself she get’s in big trouble. She stretched herself last night and she tried to do too much with the song. She’s probably a goner and I’d be shocked if someone besides her went home.

“Do you think Hollie should win this season?”

you weren’t asking me, but I’ll take a stab. I think Hollie’s voice is good enough to win. She’s got that Christina Auglera type of voice and it’s a rare thing. But Hollie is just too stiff. She doesn’t have the showmanship and if she hasn’t improved by now then she probably won’t by the time she’s eliminated.

And poor picked on Elise deserves to go home. Deandre was actually better then she was this week.

My take: I agree with RoHo per Joshua – Dreadful with a capital D. Screaming – he should be in horror movies (as the first one killed!). I vomit in my throat to say this, but I actually preferred DeAndre over that miserable mess. Actually I was in the bathroom sick just before Joshua came on, and was sounding pretty much like he did. F for Joshua, F+ for DeAndre.

I like Elise ok, but she was really off last night. The backup singers were so much better, and they actually carried much of the song.

I think Hollie was much better than given credit, again on line with RoHo. Not sure ST would recognize “pitchy” if it grabbed his butt.

Didn’t hear much of Colton – chose that time to use my Sonicare, and couldn’t hear it.

Jessica – always sings good, but she didn’t take Gwen’s advice about not acting cheezy – she threw those arms all over the place.

Skyler just leaves me cold. Last night instead of stomping the grapes for wine, she chose to pound the veal for scallopine. Don’t like whiney voices.

Philx2 – just ok, not as good as the last 2 weeks. But really liked the duet.

Did DeAndre have an itch last night? He was very “Hand-y”, if you know what I mean, and not in a Michael J kind of way. Even getting up from the seat in the audience, he was holding on for dear life.

Sadly it’ll be Hollie or Elise tonight. Joshua should go

All of the group performances were good.

1.Jessica and Joshua – I call this the Jess and Josh duo. This will be the best duet on tour.
2.Skylar and Colton – Perfect song for them both. Good adjustment for Colton.
3.Hollie and DeAndre – I enjoyed this one. The chemistry was off, but what else would you expect.
4.Elise and Phillip – Elise took the lead by far in this one. She saved this duet. PP just doesn’t perform duets well because he doesn’t understand where his voice should be.

SN: Those who are concerned about females winning it all, should take note from what was said last night (either Ryan or one of the judges). Support who you think has the best chance to win it all. If you’re voting 10 times, quit splitting your votes between all of the females or wasting time voting for the one with the least chance of winning. If Elise (for example) is the front runner, then all of your votes should go for Elise. JMO

I agree with Deidre, Hollie is mechanical. I really love her voice and she is my favorite girl in the competition but she’s not fun to watch. It’s like Jennifer said “she thinks too much”. I listed a quick and dirty ranking about 12AM today. After a brief review and some fresh air, I’ve divided the performances into to buckets: Top Shelf and the PP Bucket.

Top Shelf:
Joshua – Best of the night. I’m going to give him credit for doing it HIS way and giving the song the proper emotion it needed. He faired better performing it closer to the Harold Melvin version than the Simply Red. If it’s okay for Phil to get away with “artistry”, it should be fine for Joshua. Every good r&b singer doesn’t not have to sound like Luther or Freddie Jackson. Duet was great too. All around great night for him. Grade A

Jessica – She’s been consistently good throughout the competition and last night was no different. Jess can handle Whitney tunes like no other. She’s good enough to win. Grade A

Deandre – Probably the best I’ve heard from him to date. I’ve been waiting on him to perform Debarge for quite some time and he hit it out of the park. Grade B plus

Skylar – She started a bit slow IMO. Her twang bothers me about as much as Jessica’s melisma to some others. She was decisive and clear with all her note placements. Good “Pia” ending that capped it for me. Good job. Grade B

Morning……

Haven’t seen the first hour of last night’s show yet (recorded all) but was able to see the last hour. I will refrain from comments until I have seen the whole thing, except to say something about the judges and Hollie. No matter what she sings, it’s NEVER good enough for them. She follows their advice from week to week and yet, they never say anythinhg good. She did NOT deserve the blasting they gave her last night. While I agree that she has been better, last night’s harsh criticism was uncalled for. She had a effulgence about her last night that really came through.

After I have seen the whole 2 hours I will be back to make my comments. I would watch it now, but it’s almost time for me to leave to meet the ladies of my church so we can make over 1,000 goodie bags for the kids for this week-end.

JD

Ok, my opinion, which means nothing to anyone but me. Elise will go tonight. All will be gone eventually until the final two, probably Jessica and Phillip unless the Phillip followers get tired of voting and the Colton followers pull ahead. The judges will use the save only if one of these three are eliminated early.

JTesla

April 5th, 2012
10:05 am

I was thinking last night as to who would go and came to the same conclusion as G.

Elise is toast. Hollie could be in trouble, but with the thrashing she received people will be motivated to vote for her. Elise went second, not good, and she was entirely forgetable.

G

PP Bucket (dedicated to Phil):

Colton – Just an okay performance for me. I liked him better during the duet. Grade C plus

Hollie – She was far from the worst, but I think she’s declining. She started slow and her ending was awkward. The vocals are overall decent, but she hasn’t connected with the audience yet. It’s probably a bit late in the game for her to start connecting now. She’s in danger of leaving. Grade C

Elise – What a difference a week makes. I actually voted for her to stay last week. This week, Joshua took his votes back from her. It wasn’t horrible, but there were glaring missteps in her vocals. She may be in danger. Grade C minus

PP – RoHo threw his game off. LOL! Hey, this by far was the worst performance I’ve heard from him to date, and it doesn’t help that I’ve never been impressed by this kid. His performance looked tired. His face was strained. The vocals? Do I even need to go there? He would’ve been better off performing an instrumental version. If he was my fav on the show, in good conscience I couldn’t waste a vote on him. He was that bad. The worst part of this thing will be tonight’s results. He deserves to at least be in the bottom 3, but the judges would waste a save on him. There is possibly nothing on earth he could do, less than withdrawing from the competition, that would keep him from being in the finals. #WGWG

Alex, I thought seriously about the judges using the save for Joshua and the way they rave over him brings him the votes to move forward, but not sure if he is as marketable as the other three I mentioned and AI is all about that. If they use the save for him I still don’t think he’ll make the top three.

DanJ

I thought Joshua and Jessica were the best two last night. While Joshua may over sing, put too much emotion etc into a song so do a lot of other stars from Steven Tyler to Prince. Little Richard probably was the first to do so. With Joshua there’s little gray area, you either love him or hate him.

I think the judges will only consider saving 2 or 3 contestants if they were voted off. That’s Jessica, Joshua and Phillip.

Vast Wastrel

April 5th, 2012

@Alex – The “drama” already employed by the producers in ejecting Jermaine after a questionably delayed background check guarantee the use of a save tonight or the next couple of weeks.

@Rodney – Since yesterday both Firefox and IE lock up for a couple of minutes on your pages. I don’t know if it is the new “Meebo” bar or not. Google Chrome seems to work fine. Could be just me but thought I would pass it on.

Oh yeah, forgot to give ole Phil a grade for last night’s performance. Wait for it……wait for it…..

D minus

Only thing that kept me from giving him an F, is that he didn’t forget the lyrics. Probably could’ve been a bit higher, but his enunciation was awful throughout the entire song. Cricket legs Colton had the same problem in spots.

Deirdre

April 5th, 2012
11:05 am

Come on guys…the judges HAVE to use the save sometime in the next 3 weeks no matter who is eliminated. Jermaine’s removal guaranteed that. They have a week to fill since, if Jermaine hadn’t been kicked out, this would have been top 9 week, not top 8 week.

JTesla

I can’t fault G too much with his assessment of Phillip. It wasn’t his best performance, it was one of his worst.

Since we will be down to the final 7 next week, and we are dealing with 2 hour shows, why not two songs per contestant? They already are having to learn and rehearse two, why not jettison the duets and just give us double Idol before the Top 5.

JTesla

The Walkers featuring Janelle Monae’?

I wouldn’t fret over the numbers between The Voice and Idol just yet. People will be more inclined to tune into The Voice more once the number of contestants shrink down.

However, I’m wondering if the numbers for The Voice will take a dive if and r&b contestant wins again? There are many r&b contestants that may go far: Erin Willette, Jessie Campbell, and Kim. Much like XF, The Voice has the potential of becoming the anti-idol show, which appeals to a different mainstream.

The Sing-off’s first two winners were predominantly african american groups. If they had allowed Afro Blue to go through to the voting rounds, they would’ve been a surefire winner. They had a huge FB following. However, they chose a more traditional group in sound and color (which came in last place in the voting rounds). They were a worthy group also. I’m not sure it was designed that way to tilt the ratings or not. However, an ethnically mixed group took top honors.

I think it is good that Idol is not about the best singer. Opera singers could be considered technically the “best singers” but that doesn’t mean they should win a competition like this. Heck, if it were only about the best singer American Idol would be a radio program or perhaps a Podcast program these days.

Hi y’all,

I’ve liked Hollie in the past, but last night’s performance wasn’t as good as she could be. My problem with her is that she’s not reaching her potential. However, my bigger problem is the judges blatantly harsh commentary when it comes to her. In no way was she as bad as they made it sound. If she stays tonight she’s got to change it up and go back to the girl who went toe-to-toe with Jessica a few weeks ago.

Phillip wasn’t as good as he’s been before. He looked awkward (moreso than usual) and as if he were in pain. Still, I enjoy him and he’s my pick. The first time I’m pulling for a WGWG, so let’s see the streak end! ;)

Deandre and Joshua were alright. Joshua needs to take a gospel break at least for one week. See, here’s an example. Why is it fine for him to do this choir thing and gets celebrated for it, but Hollie’s ballads are raked over the coals?

I would guess a bottom 3 of Hollie, Elise and Joshua. Who is eliminated? Elise.

I have read a couple books written by people who worked inside the Idol bubble for a time, seen an interview with a couple guys that formerly worked on the inside, and here are some impressions from reading their material:

1. The show is not “rigged” for any contestant. There are, however, producer favorites that appear to be a promising investment even before Hollywood – that will get some extra positive camera time or plugs from the Judges.

2. As the show progresses, there are indicators of how each contestant is “selling” to the general music buying public and how they are being supported or dissed by the great many press articles written about the show. ITunes downloads, You Tube Hits, Twitter followers, etc.

3. The Judges, as encouraged or as suggested by the Producers, may try to “steer” voters – by comments about performances.

My take on what I have seen and read is that while the Judges are not puppets to the money and major controllers of the show – neither do they run this show in a complete vacuum of outside influences such as the Record Company, associated promotional management teams, etc., that might say —

Well, let’s help start cutting the field —–

When all three Judges suddenly start finding fault with someone, or find a way to keep uplifting someone through a bad performance — there may be another clue as to what is going on.

In some cases, such as Hollie’s, she is very likely under no contractual obligation to Idol, other than the tour at this point. If Universal or another record company wanted to sign her, I don’t think that Interscope and Jimmy Iovine could stop her.

Hollie needs modern music – she’s the one who can make an Adele or Christina Perry type of album with good songwriters – these 70’s -80’s songbooks are handcuffing her abilities, along with the pageanty or garrish dresses and hair&makeup looks that take-away from her youthful cuteness.

She needs a real mentor, and not this circus of clowns that have been advising her to do 20 different things at once. If she is eliminated tonight or next week, she may be better-off in the long run.

Great post Seth. I think Idol is trying to get a a male vs female final. It seems Jessica is favored based on comments from Judges and Jimmy. I also think Joshua is the chosen one. Personally I think it would make a good final. Although I do like Elise and Hollie.

I was about to get on the Phil bandwagon until last night. I wonder if maybe because he’s sick and he’s had to deal with people trying to change him if he phoned it in last night. Maybe he want’s to leave on a subconscious level. I’m sure none of these contestants knew how stressful and demanding doing the show could be.

DanJ. You make some good points. Yeah, I definitely see momentum from the judges trying to swing the way of Jess and Josh.

I do see a clash between Phil and Idol if he wins. I know PP would demand creative control, but Idol will see things a bit diffferently. So, I believe he feels that he’s done enough to get the exposure needed for him to succeed. There’s a strong possibility he’s mailing it in, but there’s one problem. His fans won’t let him.

Best part of last night: Gwen correcting her band mate by saying “on this show they are called ‘goosies’” and he shot her a glare that said “don’t make me smack the stupid out of you!”

If it’s true that Phillip is mailing it in, he could be a “shocking” elimination as his voting base slowly erodes. I don’t see them pushing Joshua for the finale, he isn’t nearly as commercial as Colton, but then they already had a Colton win the last 3 years. Pushing of Jessica seems to match what the fans like, so is it really pushing?

The worst thing for Phil would be to win.

Jessica is very talented and she would make a good end to the girl drought. However, she needs training.

To tell you the truth, I’m not really looking forward to tonight’s show. With the exception of Deandre, I’m really not that happy to see anyone leave. They all have their strengths and weaknesses but overall, I’ve been entertained every week by more than one of them(and sometimes the person who entertains me the most is different each week)

I care, D., I love the Slezak review! Also liked comment from poster:

“Jennifer is Margo Channing – she sees all female idol contestants as potential Eve Harringtons – she wildly overpraises mediocre performances from the guys, but from her comments you’d think Elise and Hollie were truly earsplittingly awful. Last night wasn’t their best performance but they were nowhere as bad as the judges’ comments. Philip had an off-night too but still received praise. Jennifer has an unhealtrhy obsession with DeAndre.”

PS Jessica needs traning? She needs a personality!

I think Jessica is just young maybe even somewhat shy. When Carrie was on the show they were times where she seemed timid. No matter how much you prepare it’s hard to fathom for a young singer everything they are put through on a show like Idol. Carrie was just a country girl and didn’t become Carrie Underwood mega-star over night. It took some time and effort for her confidence and personality to come out. I think at heart Jessica is just a typical young lady being forced to mature at a record pace. Phil, Colton, Elise know who they are musically and have confidence. So I’ll give Jessica a pass until her CD comes out. Same for Joshua. Joshua is doing what he knows best, singing and pouring his spirit into his songs. Yes it sounds like gospel to a degree because that’s what he knows. Jimmy isn’t trying to tone him down he’s playing to his strengths. My two cents anyway!

I’m not seeing the lack of personality with Jessica, at least not anymore. Especially when compared to last years Pia and Thia Megia.

The best thing for Hollie to do would be to ignore the three stooges (the judges, not the movie) and go back to what she was doing earlier on her own. (Someone needs to show her what all the confusing comments from the judges did to Siobhan!)

I disagree with many of you regarding Hollie and Jessica. If anyone is mechanical, it’s Jessica. She has a great voice but shows nothing of her own personality. She mimics the original artist on every song she sings. And they don’t call her on it! As someone said before, she’s the singbot.

Love the All About Eve references!

Speaking of JLo’s obsession with Deandre…I wish she’d just go ahead and youknowwhat him so she can move on and we can be rid of him. She was waaaaay over-the-top about Deandre last night…it was kind of embarrassing to watch.

Re Jessica, she’s 16. I wouldn’t expect her to be even close to a whole person yet.

Okay, I will try my post again for the 4th time. Can’t figure out why it won’t post.

I finally finished watching last night’s performances. I can honestly say that not any one person stood out to me, but on the other hand, none of them were as bad as the judges said, especially Hollie. I will agree that last night wasn’t her best performaces, but she didn’t deserve the comments she received.

And on the judges, I have a few comments on them. RJ’s red polka dotted shirt reminded me of the circus clown minus the bid red nose. And before ST can critize the dress styles of anyone, he needs to learn a few things himself. I know that he is a rocker (abiet an aged one) and he dresses in his own style, the contestants has the same right. As far as JLo, when will AL ever get a female judge that will not go ape over the young males???? The only female judge that didn’t do that was Ellen. JLo’s reaction to DeAndre, Phillip and others past & present, is just plain silly. She can comment on their performance without all the gushing and pinning that she does.

If Joshua, Elise or DeAndre go home tonight, I will be happy. However, I think it will be Elise. DeAndre still has the tweens voting for him so he will probably last a few more weeks.

Here is a link to the contract section that deals with this: http://www.eejlaw.com/materials/American_Idol_Contestant_Agreement.pdf

Each of the Top 10 is under exclusive contract with 19 Recordings, which has the right to pick up the contract, except for the winner, who is guaranteed a pick-up. The option remains in place until after the summer tour.

Disney will now have an Idol attraction, and it is believed that most of the middle packers in the Top 10 will have their contracts executed and will be assigned at least a year on Orlando.

These contracts are ironclad, so there is no circle of record companies swimming around any of the contestants this year. If another label wants any of the Top 10, they will have to negotiate with 19 Recordings, which, in partnership with Disney, has too much on the line requiring they keep the lower tier performers.

@watchingidol – thanks for bringing this info to light – it appears that the non-winners in the top 10 still have some strings on them”" “if 19 companies elect to exercise their options.”"”

Notice some other things in that contract that look pretty scary in terms of photo images, personal information, intimate, surprising or defamatory information. Pretty much “owned”.

While I have not seen their current contract, I have heard that there is a limit to the number of years that even the winner can be held under an exclusive contract and that laws in some states can intervene with these extremely constrictual contracts. I heard that the Courts in California established how Scotty, as a minor at the time, would be paid monies earned at the time for instance– it was not all Idol’s call as to how it would be done. So, may be just hearsay or might have some truth to it.
