Insecure, intermittently humorous, intermittently annoying Heejun Han is out.

He sealed his fate with a series of really boring performances, followed by a silly Billy Joel goof that Steven Tyler hated. He did up his game a few notches last night but it was clearly too late. His fate was sealed. He knew he had no way of winning this. His voice, as Jimmy Iovine noted, simply wasn’t good enough and his overall stage presence was lacking.

Comedy? Well, we know he’s got a future in Funny or Die videos. We’ll see if he can do anything beyond fading into the woodwork.

Jimmy Iovine’s thoughts:

- Elise: “She took charge of that stage. She led the band. Her hair, her clothes, her vocal ability, it all moved in unison… She has an opportunity with the 80s next week to have two great weeks in a row. If she can do that, she can be in the top of the class. She was a dark horse but now she’s coming on strong.”

- Phillip: “[Steve Nicks] believes in this guy. She thinks he can go all the way. If his original material is 80 percent as good as he is, he is the next American Idol.”

- Hollie: “What she lacks is experience. What she’s doing is technically right and emotionally behind the pack. Jessica takes it more soulfully. Hollie has more an intellectual approach. You don’t win on technique. You win it on soul.”

- Colton: “Colton was good but not good enough… I believe he lost that fight. He didn’t get knocked out but he’s behind on points.”

- Joshua: “This is a tough one for me. He has so much talent. He delivered 85% of the song but when he got emotional. he lost it. His voice closed. On the other hand, when he was in the Michael Jackson medley. He was relaxed. He killed that.”

- Heejun: “It’s great to see Heejun come back. I don’t think it was enough. My problem, I don’t think he sings as well as the other eight contestants on this show.”

- Skylar: “She picked a character song than a song with real melody. She’s going to have to go to songs with more song in them melodically… During the medley, she rose above the pack.”

- DeAndre: “I’m not going crazy for him. I’m not disliking him. For him to win, I think he’s missing something. He needs more experience. His falsetto is beautiful but it could be polarizing.”

- Jessica: “She’s like she’s been doing this for 10 years… She got lost in that song but kept her composure. I’m fully on board with this… What we need is a little girl power [to vote.]”

- The Ford music video: fun to see everyone in 1980s metal gear.

- Nicki Minaj “Starships” : Great, catchy song. Ridiculous outfit as always.

- Scotty McCreery “Water Tower Town” : A year on the road and he is much more self assured. The song is decent. You liked him last year, you’ll still like him now.

- The mansion: architecturally dull but spacious, of course.

Cover it live polls

- Grade Nicki: A-5%, B-26% C-26% F-42%

- Grade Scotty A-16% B-42% C-16% F-26%

Will they save Heejun: 93% No (and correct)

Hollie in bottom three: Expected 44% Travesty 56%

I can just hear Elise opening with “Well you’re a real tough cookie with the long history….” (Hit Me With Your Best Shot).

Mercedes: Thanks for link to Slezak and Melinda, D. Interesting fact they brought up: Jimmy Iovine intentionally sabotaging Holly. Booo.

I wouldn’t call that a fact at all. Michael and Melinda are speculating. Hollie picks these songs and we’ve already seen a number of the Idols refusing to follow mentors directions. I agree M & M when they point out that Hollie sang effortlessly and beautifully during the medley. This girl is shooting herself in the foot by insisting on trying to out-sing established divas.

Also, Hottie Hollie needs to separate herself from Jessica. Duel Jessica and you lose.

@JT. Agreed….yes, indeed.

@Alex. Yep, I noticed the harmonies between Stevie and Elise. One thing that I’ve noticed with successful and established singers, is that they have the ability to be strong backup singers. They can immediately pick up the voice that’s needed. Heck, most big time singers started off as backups. Luther is one of the most popular backups.

@RX. Hey, I found out a number of lead singers in heavy metal groups started out singing in the boys choir. This is a fair comparison to some pop and r&b singers having gospel roots in their church choir.

Going back to the group vocals last week…….PP, Elise, and Colton. PP was the weakest in the group. He had no clue of where he was in the harmony. He was pretty much mumbling on the mic. His vocal weakness was truly exposed during that group performance. He had no room to cheat with a growl in the background. That guy cheats all the time.

Hey everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend. Wow, y’all are chatty for a Monday!

Highlander… I actually did mean “Every Time I Think Of You”… but didn’t realize it came out in the 70s. I discovered the Babys in the 80’s, I guess. Oh well. (I don’t remember “Missing You”? Must go look for it.)

Alex – loved Elise and Stevie singing “Dreams”!!! And Pat Benatar would be an awesome pick for her. But I agree with you and others who said we will probably just hear the same old tired overdone 80s hits. Not any songs that we REALLY like. After all… gotta pick those BIG HITS!! :-(

Though I hope I’m wrong….

Seth, loved your song list, especially Refugee and It’s Raining Men. Should have had those on mine.

G, loved your April Fool’s. I believed you for the first paragraph, then you gave yourself away. :-) (Side note: while with some friends this weekend, the subject of Idol came up, and several of them mentioned that they don’t like Phil at all, and can’t understand the judges’ raves.) Anyway, G, I’m totally your ally in this matter!

Ugh, RXDawg, I love Prince but you dredged up the one song of his that I CANNOT STAND. So that almost certainly means DeSanjaya will do it.

I’m also on board with those who are really liking Elise. She’s my current #3 behind Jessica and Hollie.

Hollie is basically toast unless she comes up with something spectacular that does not require her to diva-esque the song. She cannot compete with Jessica’s far superior voice and she needs to stop trying. Jessica’s voice is superior to anyone else in the competition but frankly, she has no sense of self. I much prefer Elise.

I’d rank Elise above Hollie right now simply because she has been able to carve a niche for herself. Much like Haley did last season, she has set herself apart, and that is a way that you can acquire votes.

Sorry G, but Phillip has also set himself apart. You may not like it, but he’ll be in for a while longer because of it.

Jenny

D, I worry too that Hollie is toast, because people aren’t buzzing about her as much as some of the others. But with that AMAZING power voice, it would be a crying shame if she left too soon. Truly a shame.

I tend to go on pure voice when picking my faves, though. I sometimes like people on personality, and hope they’ll stay an extra week or two based on that (like Heejun)… but when it comes to who I want to WIN, I couldn’t care less if they’re good at changing their songs up, know who they are, etc. If they can sing like Jess and Hollie can, then they should win, in my book. :-)

Deirdre

And I tend to look at who entertains me the most. In the battle of the Davids, I found Cookie to be way more entertaining and interesting than Archie even though Archie probably had the more pure voice.

Not sure whether Kelly or Tamyra had the better voice but Kelly was a better singer.

Just me. I get why you would go with the sound itself rather than the performance of the sound.

I think that’s kind of what has been missing on Idol for awhile. Someone with a great voice who is also a great singer.

Jenny

Perfectly said, D… and thus we can all entertain ourselves endlessly by debating on this blog! :-D

I also get why you, Rodney, and others prefer the entertainment value. Good example above… I liked both Davids, but as you might guess, I actually thought David Archuleta had the better voice and should’ve won. (Sorry! Sacrilege, I know! I do love David Cook now, though! :-) )

And that is EXACTLY what the show has been missing. Someone with a great voice who is also a great singer and entertainer. (For me, Adam was the last one of those the show has had.)

You can’t stand Kiss? It’s one of the few Prince songs I really like. Although I admit that I didn’t like it that much until I heard different versions of it. Then I started respecting the orginal.

Rx, I think it’s more the memories associated with the song, than the song itself. Though I much prefer Purple Rain, When Doves Cry, Darling Nikki, Little Red Corvette.

Wow, Mr. Mister. Hadn’t thought of them in a while. My favorite song by them was “Kyrie”.

What was cool is that their lead singer was approached both by Toto and Chicago for their lead singer slot before Mr. Mister hit it big. Wonder what the guy is doing now?

“I actually did mean “Every Time I Think Of You”… but didn’t realize it came out in the 70s.” – Jenny, 1:36pm

Jenny, the name of that song actually IS ‘Missing You’ …

Songwriters – John Waite/Mark Leonard/Charles Sanford

“Every time I think of you
I always catch my breath
And I’m still standing here
And you’re miles away
And I’m wondering why you left
And there’s a storm that’s raging
Through my frozen heart tonight

I hear your name, in certain circles
And it always makes me smile
I spend my time, thinking about you
And it’s almost driving me wild
And there’s a heart that’s breaking
Down this long distance line tonight

I ain’t missing you at all
Since you’ve been gone, away
I ain’t missing you
No matter, what I might say…”

Like I always say what’s good for the gaze
Is always good for the camera
Oh, Sheila

Oh baby, love me right
Let me love you till I get it right
Can’t you let the others be
‘Cause with you is where I got to be, yeah

Oh sugar, where you been?
Hangin’ out with your male friends
Listen, somebody’s going to hurt you
The way you love to keep hurting me

We say
Oh oh, Sheila
Let me love you till the morning comes
Oh oh, Sheila
You know I want to be the only one

Jermaine Stewart “We don’t have to take our clothes off” (perfect for DeAndre):

Not a word, from your lips
You just took for granted that I want to skinny dip.
A quick hit, that’s your game.
But I’m not a piece of meat, stimulate my brain.

Night is young, so are we.
Let’s get to know each other better, slow & easily.
Take my hand, let’s hit the floor.
Shake our bodies to the music.
Maybe then you’ll score.

So come on baby, won’t you show some class
Why you want to move so fast.
We don’t have to take our clothes off

To have a good time
Oh no
We could dance & party all night
And drink some cherry wine

Uh huh
We don’t have to take our clothes off
To have a good time
Oh no

We could dance and party all night (all night)
And drink some cherry wine
Uh huh
Na na na na na na na

Not much of an 80’s fan. I came up with3 songs I like: “You Shook Me All Night Long” (AC/DC); “Don’t Dream It’s Over” (Crowded House); “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” (U2). Of course I love Sir Paul’s stuff, and I really like Bon Jovi, but just not into a lot of 80’s stuff. I’m sure there’s stuff I just can’t remember. Even though it was all fake eletronic music, I did actually like “Take On Me” by AHA – weird huh? Catchy little chorus.

Could see Philx2 with his raspy voice doing “You sShook…” – certainly different for him

Okay, here’s mine (good song by the way…..catchy hook)

Don’t think me unkind
Words are hard to find
They’re only cheques I’ve left unsigned
From the banks of chaos in my mind
And when their eloquence escapes me
Their logic ties me up and rapes me

De do do do, de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do, de da da da
Their innocence will pull me through
De do do do, de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do, de da da da
They’re meaningless and all that’s true

Poets, priests and politicians
Have words to thank for their positions
Words that scream for your submission
And no-one’s jamming their transmission
And when their eloquence escapes you
Their logic ties you up and rapes you

De do do do, de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do, de da da da
Their innocence will pull me through
De do do do, de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do, de da da da
They’re meaningless and all that’s true

De do do do, de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do, de da da da
Their innocence will pull me through

Last one for me, and no need to introduce this song, as they included it at the start of the song. Yeah, classy.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls
‘Pop Goes The World’ by ‘Men Without Hats’

Johnny played guitar, Jenny played bass
Name of the band is ‘The Human Race’
Everybody, tell me have you heard?
Pop goes the world

Jenny played keyboard, Johnny played drums
Called Little Baby and a big Bonhomme
Everybody, tell me have you heard?
Pop goes the world

It goes something like this (p p p pop)

Johnny and Jenny had a crazy dream
To see their pictures in a magazine
Every little boy needs a girl
Pop goes the world

Jenny and Johnny gettin’ smart it seemed
Made more money on a movie screen
Every little nest needs a bird
Pop goes the world

One, two, three and four is five
Everybody here is a friend of mine
Whatever happened to the Duke of Earl?
Pop goes the world

Six, seven, eight and nine is ten
Send Al Gunn to see the doctor, Ben
Hey what planet are we on? The third
Pop goes the world

And every time I wonder where the world went wrong
End up lying on my face goin’ ringy dingy ding dong
And every time I wonder if the world is right
End up in some disco dancin’ all night

Johnny played guitar, Jenny played bass
Name of the band is ‘The Human Race’
Everybody, tell me have you heard?
Pop goes the world

1986….Cheesiest Song of the Year!!!!!!

Tonight it’s very clear as we’re both lyin’ here
There’s so many things I wanna say
I will always love you, I would never leave you alone

Sometimes I just forget, say things I might regret
It breaks my heart to see you cryin’
I don’t wanna lose you, I could never make it alone

I am a man who will fight for your honor
I’ll be the hero you’re dreamin’ of
We’ll live forever, knowin’ together
That we did it all for the glory of love

You keep me standing tall, you help me through it all
I’m always strong when you’re beside me
I have always needed you, I could never make it alone

I am a man who will fight for your honor
I’ll be the hero you been dreamin’ of
We’ll live forever, knowin’ together
That we did it all for the glory of love

Like a knight in shining armor from a long time ago
Just in time I will save the day
Take you to my castle far away

I am a man who will fight for your honor
I’ll be the hero that you’re dreamin’ of
Gonna live forever, knowin’ together
That we did it all for the glory of love
