Heejun Han goes home tonight. CREDIT: Michael Becker/FOX
Insecure, intermittently humorous, intermittently annoying Heejun Han is out.
He sealed his fate with a series of really boring performances, followed by a silly Billy Joel goof that Steven Tyler hated. He did up his game a few notches last night but it was clearly too late. His fate was sealed. He knew he had no way of winning this. His voice, as Jimmy Iovine noted, simply wasn’t good enough and his overall stage presence was lacking.
Comedy? Well, we know he’s got a future in Funny or Die videos. We’ll see if he can do anything beyond fading into the woodwork.
Jimmy Iovine’s thoughts:
- Elise: “She took charge of that stage. She led the band. Her hair, her clothes, her vocal ability, it all moved in unison… She has an opportunity with the 80s next week to have two great weeks in a row. If she can do that, she can be in the top of the class. She was a dark horse but now she’s coming on strong.”
- Phillip: “[Steve Nicks] believes in this guy. She thinks he can go all the way. If his original material is 80 percent as good as he is, he is the next American Idol.”
- Hollie: “What she lacks is experience. What she’s doing is technically right and emotionally behind the pack. Jessica takes it more soulfully. Hollie has more an intellectual approach. You don’t win on technique. You win it on soul.”
- Colton: “Colton was good but not good enough… I believe he lost that fight. He didn’t get knocked out but he’s behind on points.”
- Joshua: “This is a tough one for me. He has so much talent. He delivered 85% of the song but when he got emotional. he lost it. His voice closed. On the other hand, when he was in the Michael Jackson medley. He was relaxed. He killed that.”
- Heejun: “It’s great to see Heejun come back. I don’t think it was enough. My problem, I don’t think he sings as well as the other eight contestants on this show.”
- Skylar: “She picked a character song than a song with real melody. She’s going to have to go to songs with more song in them melodically… During the medley, she rose above the pack.”
- DeAndre: “I’m not going crazy for him. I’m not disliking him. For him to win, I think he’s missing something. He needs more experience. His falsetto is beautiful but it could be polarizing.”
- Jessica: “She’s like she’s been doing this for 10 years… She got lost in that song but kept her composure. I’m fully on board with this… What we need is a little girl power [to vote.]”
- The Ford music video: fun to see everyone in 1980s metal gear.
- Nicki Minaj “Starships” : Great, catchy song. Ridiculous outfit as always.
- Scotty McCreery “Water Tower Town” : A year on the road and he is much more self assured. The song is decent. You liked him last year, you’ll still like him now.
- The mansion: architecturally dull but spacious, of course.
Cover it live polls
- Grade Nicki: A-5%, B-26% C-26% F-42%
- Grade Scotty A-16% B-42% C-16% F-26%
Will they save Heejun: 93% No (and correct)
Hollie in bottom three: Expected 44% Travesty 56%

I agree with Alex on this one: “PLEASE – no Michael Jackson or Madonna.” I would add Whitney Houston and Prince to the list. My 80s wish list:
Deandre – “All This Love” (Debarge) / “Wishing Well” (Terrance Trent Darby)
Colton – Toto / “The Reflex” (Duran Duran) / “Against All Odds” (Phil Collins) / “I Want to Know What Love Is” (Foreigner) / “That’s Just the Way It Is” (Bruce Hornsby)
Phillip – Any heavy metal tune by Megadeth. Okay, okay. “Jack and Dianne” (J. Mellencamp) / “Every Breath You Take” (Police) / “Money For Nothing” (Dire Straights) / “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” (U2)
Joshua – “Lean on Me” (Club Nouveau) / “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” (remade by Simply Red in ’89) / “Ebony Eyes” (Rick James) / “On the Wings of Love” (Jeffrey Osborne)
Jessica – “What a Feeling” (Irend Cara) / “I Feel Good” (Stephanie Mills) / “Let Me Be Your Angel” (Stacy Latesaw)
Hollie – “Take My Breath Away” (Berlin) / “Alone” (Heart) / “Could’ve Been” (Tiffany)
Skylar – “9 to 5” (Dolly Parton) / “When I Think of You” (Janet Jackson) / “Morning Train” (Sheena Easton)
Elise – “I Love Rock and Roll” (Joan Jett) / “What’s Love Got to Do With It” (Tina Turner) / “These Dreams” (Heart) / “Bette Davis Eyes” (Kim Carnes)

I’ve been quiet because I’ve been making a list of 80s songs I want to hear.
The simple fact that I wrote them down will mean we won’t hear any of them, though.
The Kinks – Come Dancing
Night Ranger – Sister Christian (Colton?)
The Who – Athena
John Cougar M. – Jack and Diane
Styx – The Best Of Times
Devo – Whip It
Foreigner – I Want To Know What Love Is
Concrete Blonde – Joey
Rick James – Super Freak
Prince – Little Red Corvette
The Clash – Rock The Casbah
Pat Benatar – We Belong
The Police – Don’t Stand So Close To Me
Madonna – Into the Groove or Like a Prayer
Pet Shop Boys – West End Girls
Jim Steinman – Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through
Dexys Midnight Runners – Come On Eileen
Talking Heads – And She Was
Don Henley – Not Enough Love In The World
Men Without Hats – The Safety Dance
Dire Straits – Brothers In Arms
UB40 – Red Red Wine
Peter Gabriel – Games Without Frontiers
U2 – Red Hill Mining Town

@Alex–I have the reverse take on Skylar. I think she connects better to the audience but doesn’t have the level of talent that Lauren did.

Wait, wait, those are excellent songs for DeAndre.
Heck, going down your list, you’ve picked excellent songs to showcase your talent. We need to get this list over to the remaining contestants. @RHo, Heejun is gone, you think he can drop the list off (lol). Pretty sure he’ still in the bldg., somewhere.

That is actually a good choice. I may not be a fan of DeAndre’s, but that would be perfect.

Nana deserves a re-quote. Because I’m still laughing.
Nana, 4:19 p.m.:

And yes, Sam and Pitchy, I thought Andy Gibb had died some time ago. I was going to look it up, but got distracted by the 80s songs (and the cat’s tail.

Alex and Pitchy: my special BeeGee song is “Run to me” – love the words and melody.
Clay excelled on “Neil Diamond night” – think it was “Domino” – beautiful, and Neil about fell to the floor!
We are really a chatty group today – our pages are racking up as fast as the lottery is going up!

Yep, Seth, I knew what you meant. That would’ve been my personal-preference top 4 a couple of weeks ago too, though P2 has fallen out. Now I just have a top 3.
Sam, I love Run to Me! And Gotta Get A Message To You. And Nights On Broadway… Love So Right… I could go on forever. (And Desire, but that was Andy Gibb, wasn’t it?)

I still think that PP can pull off any heavy metal song in the 80s by Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden etc. Seriously. Hey, all the songs are in his singing range. He can hit all the growl octaves. LOL!!!

And who else misses the days when there was a guest mentor, and then that person would sit in and judge? I was just thinking of that recently, and also noticed it on the Clay video.
I thought that was great! Who better to assist and judge than the original artist??

Of a dark
Scottish lake…….”

And didn’t Milie Cyrus once “mentor” for some artist she’d probably never heard of?
Jenny

I think these days, the show chooses mentors because the mentor has a new album or movie coming out.
And then the show thinks it’s “young and hip” by choosing these people.
It’s very sad. What happened to Idol being about music?

Pitchy, as I remember, we were all dreading Milie… but it turned out she wasn’t as awful as we feared. She stuck to giving them advice on stage presence and confidence. She even said as much… said they were already so good, she couldn’t possibly offer advice on the singing front. (True.
)
I’ve never cared much for her, but she actually wasn’t a disaster.
