Insecure, intermittently humorous, intermittently annoying Heejun Han is out.

He sealed his fate with a series of really boring performances, followed by a silly Billy Joel goof that Steven Tyler hated. He did up his game a few notches last night but it was clearly too late. His fate was sealed. He knew he had no way of winning this. His voice, as Jimmy Iovine noted, simply wasn’t good enough and his overall stage presence was lacking.

Comedy? Well, we know he’s got a future in Funny or Die videos. We’ll see if he can do anything beyond fading into the woodwork.

Jimmy Iovine’s thoughts:

- Elise: “She took charge of that stage. She led the band. Her hair, her clothes, her vocal ability, it all moved in unison… She has an opportunity with the 80s next week to have two great weeks in a row. If she can do that, she can be in the top of the class. She was a dark horse but now she’s coming on strong.”

- Phillip: “[Steve Nicks] believes in this guy. She thinks he can go all the way. If his original material is 80 percent as good as he is, he is the next American Idol.”

- Hollie: “What she lacks is experience. What she’s doing is technically right and emotionally behind the pack. Jessica takes it more soulfully. Hollie has more an intellectual approach. You don’t win on technique. You win it on soul.”

- Colton: “Colton was good but not good enough… I believe he lost that fight. He didn’t get knocked out but he’s behind on points.”

- Joshua: “This is a tough one for me. He has so much talent. He delivered 85% of the song but when he got emotional. he lost it. His voice closed. On the other hand, when he was in the Michael Jackson medley. He was relaxed. He killed that.”

- Heejun: “It’s great to see Heejun come back. I don’t think it was enough. My problem, I don’t think he sings as well as the other eight contestants on this show.”

- Skylar: “She picked a character song than a song with real melody. She’s going to have to go to songs with more song in them melodically… During the medley, she rose above the pack.”

- DeAndre: “I’m not going crazy for him. I’m not disliking him. For him to win, I think he’s missing something. He needs more experience. His falsetto is beautiful but it could be polarizing.”

- Jessica: “She’s like she’s been doing this for 10 years… She got lost in that song but kept her composure. I’m fully on board with this… What we need is a little girl power [to vote.]”

- The Ford music video: fun to see everyone in 1980s metal gear.

- Nicki Minaj “Starships” : Great, catchy song. Ridiculous outfit as always.

- Scotty McCreery “Water Tower Town” : A year on the road and he is much more self assured. The song is decent. You liked him last year, you’ll still like him now.

- The mansion: architecturally dull but spacious, of course.

Cover it live polls

- Grade Nicki: A-5%, B-26% C-26% F-42%

- Grade Scotty A-16% B-42% C-16% F-26%

Will they save Heejun: 93% No (and correct)

Hollie in bottom three: Expected 44% Travesty 56%

I don’t really get all the love for this season.

Colton: if it weren’t for his Piano Man rendition last week, I would be buckets of meh about him. He’s not as stylish as Adam Lambert, doesn’t have the vocal control of Danny Gokey, and doesn’t play the piano as well as Matt Giraud. But last week really worked. Maybe he has more than one song in him, unlike (say) Andrew Garcia.

Jessica: Pageant-bots and Celine wannabees rarely do it for me. She’s no different. She’s on pitch, she sings well, and it totally leaves me cold.

Deandre: Speaking of leaving me cold… Ugh. Yes, he sings really really high. Yes, R&B worships the falsetto. I’m not into R&B, and some of those pitches he hits are literally painful, as in sharply inducing a headache.

Joshua: He’s given some amazing performances. He’s better than Lusk. And I won’t say that someone can’t sing the same way week after week and get my support. The truth is, though, he wouldn’t get play on my iPod.

Phil: I am REALLY tired of WGWGs winning. But he’s good. He’s like a more attractive Casey Abrams with an obvious joy that Casey sometimes lacked. He reminds me of Kris Allen both because of the weird facial expressions and his obvious comfort on stage, but the grit in his voice is appealing. Phil, though, lacks something that both Casey and Kris have. Casey was one of the most likeable guys to ever come through the competition. Kris had charm, too. I’m not getting a sense of “charm” from Phil, probably because–as he keeps saying–he’s so focused on the music. But that charisma is important. If he doesn’t make it much further in the competition, I’m calling it lack of charisma. It’s not lack of skill, it’s not lack of talent, and it’s not lack of a Y-chromosome.

Hollie: I really liked her at first. But after two mediocre performances and lacking a Y-chromosome, I predict she’s going home tonight.

Heejun: He reminds me of Anoop, except Anoop was better (although perhaps lacking in the humor department). But both of them do that velvety ballad thing.

Skyler: I hate country music. She’s different than most recent country contestants. I wondered if they were punishing her with the second spot last night because her “idol” was Blake Shelton’s wife who frequently appears on The Voice.

Elise: She’s my Haley this year. I started out cold, but she continues to grow on me. She’s my currently desired winner (though, lacking a Y-chromosome, she’s got no prayer of winning).

All that said, there aren’t any *awful* contestants this year… nobody who I think shouldn’t even be there. I also don’t think there’s anybody who is getting me riled up to fight for her/his victory. When David Cook came along, I loved him. In Adam’s and Kris’s year, I loved them both. When Crystal Bowersox came along, I *really* adored her–still do, with her CD on my iPod’s short list. Last year, it wasn’t until there were five or six weeks left that I really started to invest in Haley.

Everyone has her/his own musical tastes. Mine run to acoustic over electronic or brass, passionate but imperfect performances, and a distinct lack of chronic pitch issues. (Still mad that Lee won). I also have much more respect for people who play an instrument. But for me, there’s nobody worth getting excited about right now.

Handicapping the season:

Hee Haw and Deandre Makesmesick. These two guys should realize they’ve come much farther than their talent should have legitimately taken them. Hopefully both will be gone within the next 8 days.

Handicapping continued

Elise Testosterone. My play on her last name is out of admiration of her singing voice. I LOVED her version of “Whole Lotta Love”. But she has 3 things working against her from a “what is needed to win American Idol” perspective: (1) she’s female, (2) her age, and (3) lack of an engaging personality. Who is she going to connect with to get tons of votes?

Joshua. Here’s the big question about him – what “American Idol” demographic will vote for him in a big way? Whether you like or dislike his voice and presentation (I’m with the latter) just who is going to vote for him? Add to that the fact that he looks like he’s about 35 years old.

Hollie. Was one of my early favorites but her performances the past two weeks have shown some vocal weakness and her outfits (last night was better than the past 2 weeks) don’t seem to fit her age. She just may not be connecting to her age of voters. Add to this “image” problem the fact that she’s a female and that’s not a recipe for ultimate success.

Alex

Still going:

Skylar. Her voice is definitely better than Lauren from last year, but I don’t think she connects to the audience as well as Lauren. Last year was definitely “Country Idol” but I don’t see that continuing. Add in the fact that she’s female and her chances slip somewhat. I believe her high finish would be #2 but most likely finish is 3rd or 4th.

Phil. He is definitely different and, yes, I do see the comparisons to Dave Matthews. His unique style may carry him to the top but I believe he will finish 3rd or 4th. Sort of a Daughtry thing. The fact that he is a guy helps.

Nutmeg I agree with almost everything you said. I do like Jessica and think given the right producer she could be a star. I think Joshua needs some refinement unless he want to sing Gospel. Heejun is trying to get a television deal not win a competition. Hollie has been off the last few weeks. Losing interest here fast. Phil is growing on me but he is not an Idol. Colton is good not great. I also like Elise and hope she sticks around. She and Jessica are my two favorites right now.

Alex, we often refer to this blog as Pacman because, for as long as I’ve been here, it eats posts. Apparently the tech people don’t know or don’t care that this happens.

Try rewording your post to see if there is something Pacman objects to…then try entering your post one sentence at a time to find the culprit for yourself. Often a name like Joe C*cker will trigger Pacman to eat your post yet someone like the poster last night named Chicago can post about sucking
d*ck and it doesn’t get stopped. Weird

Ack! Sorry for accidental post above… Decade-long Idol fan here. I think this week may have been one of the best ever, so actually bummed someone has to go this time. Loved JLo’s SYTYCD shout-out. As for repeats, I think the S11 versions were at least as good as, and in most cases better than, the older season versions, and there were lots this week:

Gunpowder & Lead (Miranda Lambert) — Skylar (S11) vs. Haley & Lauren (S10)
Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) — Colton, Elise, Phillip (S11) vs. Lacey Brown (S9)
Edge of Seventeen (Stevie Nicks) — Colton, Elise, Phillip (S11) vs. Nikki McKibbin (S1)
Don’t Stop (Fleetwood Mac) — Colton, Elise, Phillip (S11) vs. Casey James (S9) vs. Group Finale (S5)
A Song For You (Donny Hathaway) — Heejun Han (S11) vs. Ricky Braddy (S8) vs. Elliott Yamin (S5) vs. Chip Days (S2)
Jesus, Take the Wheel (Carrie Underwood) — Hollie (S11) vs. Danny Gokey (S8) vs. LaKisha Jones (S6)
Rock With You (MJ) — DeAndre, Heejun, Joshua (S11) vs. Top 13 Group (S10) vs. Stephen Fowler (S8) vs. Brandon Rogers (S6) vs. Chip Days (S2)
P.Y.T. (MJ) — DeAndre, Heejun, Joshua (S11) vs. Danny Gokey (S8) vs. Justin Guarini (S1)
Without You (Mariah Carey) — Joshua (S11) vs. Carly Smithson (S7) vs. Kelly Clarkson (S1)
Whole Lotta Love (Led Zeppelin) — Elise (S11) vs. Adam Lambert (S8)

Great post above, Nutmeg!

Well, I’m not thrilled it was Heejun, but not surprised either. The show seemed so mad at him. I just thought it all was funny.

Although Nutmeg, we do disagree on Jessica. And I hope Hollie can dig out a “moment” next week. She’s so good, and has such a power voice, it would be a shame for some of the lesser ones to outlast her.

Sorry Jenny, I watched off and on, but had to play some Littlest Pet Shop.

I never got the lights thing either, its great to shed some light on the behind the scenes people, but saying her name each time isn’t helping. Besides, she is probably the person who directs another person to actually push the button to dim the lights. Heck, there are probably 2 or 3 people who make that happen, 2 or 3 people whose names Ryan doesn’t know.

I’ve tried posting the following 3 times now so I’m splitting it up to see if it makes it through:(even though when I tried to post it again I got the old “duplicate post” message!)

Most of us agree that the voting system as it stands now SUCKS! But I think it’s reaching the endgame. Given Idol’s demographics (with the largest share of it’s audience in the 18-49 and above), and the show’s lowering ratings, Warwick and Fuller are going to have to start listening to that larger, older demographic or take the chance of losing their cash cow.
