The “American Idol” judges fell over themselves tonight. Five of the singers received standing ovations.

With the theme of picking your idols, everyone was able to pick songs they knew really well. So everybody had a chance to shine.

Unfortunately, I just wasn’t as excited as the judges. There weren’t any disastrous performances tonight but not really anything that would have lifted me to my feet – or at least off my couch.

And a show that now should be 90 minutes with nine singers has been stretched to two hours by Fox edict. So there was a pointless “fashion” bit with Tommy Hilfiger and three medleys that showcased Heejun Han’s inability to follow basic choreography and questionable fashion choice by Skylar Laine. (I did like Hollie singing Madonna. It worked. Skylar’s southern twang was a little jarring but interesting.)

I did like seeing the comfort of two old friends, Jimmy Iovine and guest mentor Stevie Nicks, who have worked together going back to the early 1970s.

I think Heejun is going home. He did a passable job on Donny Hathaway’s “A Song For You” but I suspect the residual bittersweet taste of Billy Joel week lingers and he’s due. The bottom three? I bet it’s Joshua, Skylar and Heejun. I know folks here want DeAndre to go home but I don’t think so. Not yet. His fans will vote for him and that divisive falsetto of his.

My rankings: 1- Phillip 2- Hollie 3 – Elise 4- DeAndre 5- Jessica 6- Heejun 7- Skylar 8- Joshua 9 – Colton

Colton Dixon (Lifehouse’s “Everything”) – A snoozer of a song to me but fits Colton’s earnest approach. Vocally, I find his lower register boring and unimpressive. And even his full voice is very generic to me. Grade: B-minus

Skylar Laine (Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpowder and Lead”) – Sklyar opted for her strength: a honky-tonk rabble rouser. That’s what she excels at and she did what is a virtually note-by-note faithful rendition of this early Miranda hit. It was almost too faithful. She added nothing to the equation. Grade: B

Heejun Han (Donny Hathaway’s “A Song For You”) – We’re back to serious Heejun after last week’s Vote for the Worst-level “My Life.” He lacks stage presence. I feel he’s too internalized when he sings something like this. It fits his voice well but I’m not sure this will inspire votes. His enunciation is distracting, too. Plus, I can’t help but think of Elliot Yamin’s version in 2006 that is hard to beat. Grade: B (standing ovation, by the way)

Hollie Cavanagh (Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel”) – She does an extremely faithful version of Carrie’s first hit. It’s sweet. Pretty dress this week, too. Couldn’t tell what shoes she was wearing. Lots of fog. Grade: B-plus/A-minus. (no standing o)

DeAndre Brackensick (Eric Benet’s “Sometimes I Cry”) -I am not familiar with this song. Falsetto tends to bore me. He does it well but it isn’t my gig. Still, this was his best live performance to date. He showed confidence and some inkling of charisma. Grade: B-plus (standing o)

Jessica Sanchez (Beyonce’s ‘Sweet Dreams”) – Beyonce has done a very slow ballad version of this mid-tempo hit live in concert. Jessica opted, of course, for that version. As usual, technically, she’s solid. Jessica is good at play acting but not good enough for me: I don’t really believe her. She is too young to truly express the pain in this song. “Tattoo your name across my heart,” she sings. Really? Grade: B-plus (no standing o)

Phillip Phillips (Jonny Lang’s “Still Rainin’ “) – Obviously, he has sung this a thousand times. But his assuredness and natural charm carries him through a bluesy rock tune hardly anybody knows. I just like watching him as well as listening to him. Grade: A (standing o)

Joshua Ledet (Mariah Carey’s version of ‘Without You,” though Harry Nilsson really owned this) – I usually enjoy watching Joshua but this was soporific. His histrionics in this case only felt histrionic. But I do appreciate that he was so into the song that he cried at the end. Grade: B-minus (standing o)

Elise Testone (Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love”) – Clearly, she is comfortable with this song and does a decent job. It’s hard to beat the energy and intensity of Robert Plant. She just isn’t that intense. It’s such a great song that this fact alone elevates Elise. And it’s clear why Nigel & Co. gave her the pimp spot. It was good but I simply don’t like her enough to care that much. Grade: B-plus (delayed standing o)

This show is garbage…is all about ratings, the standing “O’s” are designed to bring you back next week, the talent is marginal at best

I enjoyed Phillip greatly for the first time tonight. Before I just thought he was ok. But that was good.

Jessica is so polished and pro. She’s too good actually. For the same reason people like underdogs, they will not like Jessica. Still, her and Phil are the only ones I truly know will have a career in music.

I didn’t like Elise as much as I thought I would or wanted to, but I still really enjoyed it. Mostly because it was Zep!

Joshua…. he annoys me. I don’t think he can hold a steady note. He covers it up by going all over the place. He’s falling in my opinion, although I’m sure I’m in the minority on this (for now).

Heejun was a LOT better this week. But you still can’t win on balads.

Hollie, you can’t win on ballads either. And I’m worried about her. She’s not getting better as the competition moves on, she’s getting worse.

Skylar, good performance but bad song choice. A song that encourages women to shoot their man if they’re upset?

Deandre….deandre….deandre. Look, I can recognize that what he did was technically good. But I hate it. I guess I hate true R&B. Of all the genres of music it’s got have the worst melodies of them all. I think I just figured that out. They just go everywhere vocally and I simply don’t enjoy it.

I didn’t like Colton tonight. I don’t think it’s good for contestants to sing pure worship songs except for maybe a few very famous exceptions. But I really didn’t like his performance here either. I thought he was very soft vocally. Maybe it was just a sound issue.

I guess that’s all I have to comment on. Except that I just read where UGA’s starting safety and LB are suspended for 2-4 games for braking team rules. I’m kinda hot about that at the moment….I want to say bad words.

The burning questions:

Will the HolliePops fan base and the great State of Texas still keep Hollie out of the bottom 3 this time?

Could Jessica lose her top 2 level status from a slow song that didn’t garner much notice tonight?

Will the Heejunies across America keep him safe against the boppers now impressed by DeAndre’s falsetto flings?

Logic would say that Phillip, Colton and Elise should be safe from the bottom 3, but no one else would get a performace pass this week.

No save would be used for DeAndre, Heejun or Elise if at the bottom. Skylar would be saved, this week only, due to her “differentness” in style and voice – for show purposes. Joshua would be saved as well.

Otherwise, they will not use a save yet. The Judges had to use a lot of standing ovations to make us believe this was a big nite, rather than mostly a “so what” nite.

My ratings -

1. Elise. She nailed it. Almost lived up to Adam’s version (but not quite). Very, very good, though.

2. Hollie. I thought she did a great job and I loved the snow. Did well on Madonna too.

3. Jessica. I am starting to think she can sing anything well. LOVED her starting out “Like A Prayer.”

4. Joshua. I rewatched him, but only listened (to hide the overwrought faces)… I loved most of it, but then CRINGED when the screech came along. NOT standing ovation worthy.

5. Heejun. Glad he finally used his pretty voice. But did he have some enunciation problems going on?

6. & 7. Colton and Phil. Interchangeable. Liked Colton on Landslide, didn’t like his first song.
Phil, as always, sang fine but bored me. And he makes such contorted faces lately. He’s starting to remind me of cheesy Scotty.

8. Skylar. Ugh.

9,000. Deandre. Hurt my ears, and bothered the cat.

Some personal observations from an over 60 male who has seen every AI show since it started.
1. For the first time I can easily see 5-6 that are worthy of winning it all. Someone really, really good is going to be booted off in the last 2-3 weeks.
2. I can go along with RH’s top 10 except for replacing Holly with Skylar. Also I was wondering what the judges were thinking when they were ranting about Colton Dixon’s song. That had to be his worst performance so far, and I see RH agrees and has him at #10. Good minds think alike. Now I know my ears are OK.
3. They need to stop showing Jessica with the long shots and those short dresses. Pants and long dresses do her a big favor by not showcasing those “gams” . From the knees down all I can think of when I see her is “flamingo”. Sorry, but they are that bad!
4. Glad to see RH mention Harry Nilson had the original and only version of “Without You” as far as I am concerned. Nobody, not even Mariah C can do what he did with that song. Period!
5. Please, could Deandre go out this week. I was in the backroom when he was singing and I honestly thought the cat had gotten his tail caught in the door again. Somebody please take the “teeny-boppers” phones away from them!

And Rodney, I agree, the judges were awfully excited tonight over what was at best a mediocre show. (except Elise, who brought a much needed rocking ending!) And I’ve seen several other people on facebook, raving about what an awesome show it was tonight. I don’t quite get it… I thought it was just OK, overall.

I sure hope your Heejun prediction is wrong. Deandre and Skylar can’t get off that stage fast enough for me.

Amusing how Colton refers to his song as “my favorite worship song” and Stevie Nicks sees a certain line in the song as “something all women would love to have a guy say to them”.

Skylar did her usual happy dance… but what’s with the enlargement of her hips? Again!

Hejun fredeemed himself nicely.

Hollie my favorite of the night. I googled a handful of her songs before Idol and she has a pesonable voice I like very much. Don’t udnerstand Steve Tyler’s criticism. Weren’t the Idols supposed to pick material sung by their idols?Hollie’s dressand jewelry succesful.

Deandre – I finally get the hate. The guys is awful.

Jessica – “she is a good student” said Stevie Nicks… very true. Jessica is good at imitating.

Phillip – he’s just such fun to watch. And he wore a brown coat!

Joshua, in another ill-fitting coat that let his left shoulder droop.

Elise – did well, but I just don’t care for her.

After watching, I think Hollie’s going.

1) She’s given two mediocre performances in a row.

3) Hollie lacks the thing that makes an Idol successful: a Y chromosome.

That’s my prediction.

Hollie and Phillip sing exactly the same every single week. They are beyond boring and it amazes me that Rod is drinking the same kool aid as the idol judges fawning all over Phillip. Steven can do a range of power rock ballads and gritty tunes, but Phillip is the same boring Dave Matthews in a 4 note range every week that wouldn’t win a competition at any decent sized university or county fair. His only marketable attribute is having been on AI for a couple of months.

Seth T

March 29th, 2012

Hollie is slowly getting morphed-in to a singing prom queen with an older-than-she-is look.

If she doesn’t get a grip on where she is going soon, and demonstate some hot star qualities, she can forget about a run for the top 3. She has top 3 talent but is making some poor song choices and is dumbing-down her ability to be vibrant, demonstrative and attractive on stage.

I’m hoping she can snap-out-of-it soon, before the lower 2 boys move-up and past her while she is standing in one spot, singing an overdone Carrie Underwood song in a sparkly prom dress.

Really? Do you like anyone? The one you liked best is the guy who can’t sing. I liked Phillip Phillips at first, but his narrow range and growling has become irritating. He’s clearly talented, but he sounded better singing with Colton and the other guy (I forget who it was). He should be the guy in a group who chimes in on the 2nd verse, everybody cheers because, actually, in small doses, he is really good; then backs out and lets the one with a musical range finish the song.

Ryan

March 29th, 2012

Phillip is my favorite, by far. But I don’t think he’ll win (prolly 3rd) elyse would win if she was younger (which is unfair) holly is boring (and I know this doesn’t really matter but she isn’t even american) Deandre’s voice isn’t my cup of tea at all, I don’t understand the judges liking him. Colton will have his album regardless, I also really enjoy his talent on the piano. Jessica did very poorly with an upbeat song, so until she pulls that off I’m not convinced. Skylar is okay but I don’t think she really gets it, I don’t feel it when she sings (isn’t that the point of country, telling stories) Joshua for me is a nightmare, it’s the fantasia nightmare all over.

Bad bout of insomnia tonight er this morning. Watched the performances using the DVR and reduced the 2 hours to a little more than 30 minutes since I wanted to hear what Stevie Nicks had to say. IMO the producers should allow the full song to be sung and see if they have a little endurance if Fox is going to milk this for 2 full hours. I again listened using my HiFi headphones which I highly recommend. IMO:

9. Deandre – There is such a thing as good falsetto. This was not. He soared it into dog wailing territory.
8. Colton – His tonal quality just doesn’t agree with me in addition when he is on a minor chord it just sounds off key not transitional.
7. Heejun – Better than last week but he would have been my pick to be voted off last week. I’m not sure it is possible for him to hold a note beyond a beat without sliding around.
6. Joshua – Had me liking it for a minute and a half. The last 30 seconds were all over the map and not in a good way. Waaaay over the top with the caterwauling. Agree 100% Rodney. Nilsson took this to #1 Worldwide and a Grammy if I’m not mistaken. You simply can’t label this a Mariah song.
5. Skylar – Quintessential Honky Tonk girl and whether you like twang or not she is a presence on the stage and works it better than most. She is a one trick pony however.
4. Phillip – Love the rockers and maybe he made this just look too easy. I’m sure he is safe but he needs to stretch it more on future shows.
3. Jessica – Toned it down and didn’t over sing as much this week. She has the pipes to make it an A+ every week if she would just sing it straight, with less vibrato and a flourish only when the song calls for it.
2. Hollie – She ain’t Carrie but for her age and small frame that is still a great big voice. It took guts to do this one and I think she pulled it off.
1. Elise – Props for doing Led Zep right. She does rough real well. Deserved the pimp spot with this. Would have been an A+ but she didn’t quite stick the landing. Of course Plant had 5+ minutes to build to the end, she only had 2.

I hit FF after each performance but if there were 5 standing O’s then there were 4 too many. Elise was the only one deserving. Got to keep those ratings though even if it does result in mere cheerleaders for judges.

Deirdre

March 29th, 2012

Morning!

First half of the show was a snooze-fest. Second half gradually improved. 3 standouts for me:

1. Elise sang a pure rocker song and pulled it off. Never would have believed it. I thought she was all soft jazzy. I hope this was the performance that opened a lot of people’s eyes to the fact that she’s a talented singer.

2. Phil. I get the Dave Matthews comparisons(as in their styles are similar) but Phil is no more an imitation of Dave than Jessica or Hollie are an imitation of Celine.

3. Jessica just has a wonderful voice. This performance was not one of my favorites and her vibrato was so out of control that, at one point, I thought there might have been a small earthquake in LA but her voice is hard to deny

Bill G.

March 29th, 2012

The original version of “Without You” was written by member of the 60’s band “Badfinger”. The hit version of their song was performed by Harry Nillson in 1970 or 1971. Joshua’s version was terrible. As Randy would say, “Let’s Get Real Here”.

Deirdre

March 29th, 2012
8:03 am

And that brings me to a point I have been wanting to make for awhile.

Idol is really not so much about the voice as it is about the singing. Ray Charles didn’t have much of a voice but wow!, the guy could sing. Sometimes how a song is interpreted, how it is felt, how its emotions are transferred from the singer to the listener is way more important than how good the voice is.

Don’t get me wrong, a good voice helps a lot but it isn’t always necessary.

Jessica has a good voice and mostly she also a good singer. But sometimes I feel like she overplays her hand. She emotes too much.

Elise started out on totally the wrong foot with a theme that she hated and it showed. The last 2 weeks, however, Elise has proven that she’s a singer. Her voice is good, sure, not nearly as good as Jessica’s but she feels real on stage while Jessica has a slightly contrived feel.

Brackensack must go! His voice is awful… and if he stays, he must get a haircut!

I don’t get why so many people like jessica. She doesn’t sound original, and that vibrato (sp?) is annoying, but the only thing she can do.

Also, skylar got some bad ratings, but I thought she nailed it! The song was good and I feel like she believed what she was singing, moreso than a lot of the others. Colton was also good and he may be pulling a lot of the tweenage votes

I am starting to really love Elise. Absolutely loved her performances last night. And I’m not surprised that Stevie Nicks enjoyed singing with her. She sounds so much like Christine McVie, Stevie’s counterpart in Fleetwood Mac. Elise is an exciting singer.

Jessica used to be my favorite, but last night’s performance was a little boring. Same goes for Colton’s, who also used to be my favorite.

I still think Heejun’s voice is sexy.

Phil was better this week. Didn’t sound as much like a braying, constipated cow. Actually carried a tune.

And I prefer that singers don’t dance or prance around while they sing. To me, it takes away from the emotional impact of the song. And I absolutely hate when they reach down into the audience while they’re singing. Talk about breaking character…!

Sure was a roller coaster of dreadful/really good! My opinions, before I read everyone else’s:

DeAndre: The singular worst performance ever on Idol (incl the Fster 3rd season). I could feel my crystal cracking in the china cabinet. I put my hands over the pup’s ears, then took her from the room.

Joshua: OMG – that was dreadful. Nilsson must be screaming in his grave over the ruination of his lovely song! Joshua just can’t resist adding another syllable to the end of each word – for me this is the worst sin of all in singing!

Skyler: C’mon baby, stomp/shout/stomp/shout – If they’d let her perform in an oak barrel filled with grapes, they’d have a reasonable amount of wine by the end of the song.

No real problems with the rest of them – pretty good show excluding the above.

Colton – didn’t know or like the song. Not his best for me. Too many vocal changes, high, low, soft, strong – I was confused where the song was going. But still ok

Philx2 – Continue to be amazed that I seem to be becoming a fan. Really like him last night. I didn’t know the song, but liked it. How is this happening? He’s now in my top 3-4.

Hollie – I do not like that song, but loved her performance. She has such a pure, lovely voice, and is good in the stage performance aspect. My fave to win.

Jessica – great voice, but I just don’t think she’s as great as a lot of other do. STill, at this point my #2.

Heejun – Sorry, I do like him. Really smooth, sweet voice, and I love his nutty personality.

Elise – pretty good last night. Took guts, and she did an ok job on it.

I missed Erica – really liked her.

Please, powers that be, let it be DeAndre, and failing that, Joshua – my ears are still aching over their performances!

Rickster’s Rankings

1. Elise: Proves that Ann & Nancy Wilson (Heart) weren’t an aberration. Women ROCK! :-)

2. Phillip: How can he sound so angry but still have a smile on his face?

3. Colton: Colton’s a GCB (Good Christian Boy) who is growing on me.

4. Hollie: Nobody can do Carrie like Carrie does Carrie. Plus… they left out the verse where the car goes spinning out of control – prompting the whole “Jesus, Take the wheel.”

5. Heejun: In the words of Randy Jackson…. “whhaaAAAAAAt?” Actually good. But almost sings with a lisp – and drops the ‘s’ at the end of word. ;-)

6. Skylar: Would have picked “Famous in a Small Town” – but it’s hard to compare to Miranda.

7. Jessica: If this was an improvement over the original, I’m glad I’ve never heard the original

8. Joshua: His performance brought tears to my eyes…. It was that painful.

9. Deandre: FFd through 95% of it until I saw the judges’ standing o. Went back to listen to it – and still FFd through it. I don’t get it.

Prediction: If Heejun doesn’t go home – someone gets saved tonight.

And Joshua is going to gospel-up everything from now on. It’s how he gets good feedback. Unfortunately for a guy with a good voice and who is clearly a singer, his steadfast “my way or the highway” attitude, resulting in his refusal to change it up just a bit, will not win the competition for him.

I think the same may go for Philx2. To me, this kid is exceptionally talented with a real musicians view of music. But his detractors are serious about not liking him and that will hurt him for the long haul.

Normally I don’t comment on message boards, but today I have to speak up on behalf of Deandre (American Idol). The song he sang last night was originally sang by an extremely talented R&B artist Eric Benet. I understand that some music genres aren’t for everyone, however, don’t hate on Deandre’s performance of “Sometimes I Cry” until you have listened to the original version and thus did a comparison. While some may not have appreciated Deandre’s efforts, he did a MAGNIFICENT rendition of the original (Eric Benet sang the original version brilliantly in falsetto). So before you discount someone’s performance based on your personal likes and dislikes, remember that American Idol and other shows like it are competitions and contestants should be judged on their overall performance whether we, the viewing audience, likes, knows, or ever heard of their song choices. People should really keep things in perspective when judging or should I say mis-judging others so harshly.

This is the problem with all of these competition shows that leave the judging up to America. People don’t judge based on the actual performances, people judge based on how someone looks or if they like their song choice. The viewing audience is literally holding someone’s dreams in their hands, I would ask that people start to really pick more wisely and take ALL factors into consideration when making their selections. Try putting yourself in their positions, and then ask yourself if given the same opportunity, if you would want people to vote you off after having an outstanding performance just because they never heard your song choice before or couldn’t appreciate how you performed the song when you and the judges (who obviously knew the song), thought you performed it extremely well? I’m sure someone will say yes, but chances are you would be lying.

America does not vote fairly or accurately which is the very reason why most of these competition shows end up selecting an artist with mediocre talent to represent America. When you use silly criteria to make a judgement call, you not only do yourself, but everyone involved with the show a huge disservice!

These are my opinions and I apologize for the long post, but I needed to vent. I will not be commenting to anyone’s replies, but you are certainly free to respond.

Why should anyone vote for a performer whose voice they abhor because they did it comparative to the original singer (Eric Benet, the wife beating cheater, at least by Hallie Berry)

Commoncents, re Jessica “She doesn’t sound original”… this is my problem with the “tiny songstress”. She’s good at mimicking other performers, but I don’t feel there’s a “there” there.

lharley and idol is on – please take the worn, tired and woefully overused “hate” thing somewhere else.

Just because we don’t like a person’s voice doesn’t mean we hate them. Just because you like Deandre doesn’t mean you hate the other contestants.

Whether we knew Deandre’s song is irrelevant.

I’d never heard the song Colton or Phillip sang. I liked their performaces. I knew the songs Heejun and Joshua sang. I liked Heejun’s – didn’t like Joshua’s.

You like what you like. We like what we like. It’s that simple. It’s not a matter of “hate” – it’s a matter of personal taste.

@idol is on…I know BOTH the song and the artist. Don’t make assumptions about who I am. I did NOT like Deandre’s version which, imo, was off-key during the second half. He started well and I thought he might be successful but I was wrong.

As for Joshua…I like Joshua, I really do but he has an attitude about songs that are out of his comfort zone that says he isn’t willing to even try. He has to be willing to give his all with every song even when it is an artist he doesn’t like(Billy Joel, in this case) He can’t win if he doesn’t try.

My observatiion after reading so many comments: Most of the commentors are white AI voters who relish rock, metal, pop or country and have no real understanding of R&B (and the gift of a high and controlled falsetto…which none of the other contestants can do, save Deandre), and none are considering marketability as durable stage performers. IMO… only (with aggresive marketing/producing) Deanndre (looks, voice and learned stage presence), Skylar (energetic *ugh*…country), and Colton (cause the white majority still love metal, rock and roll and ) could “eventually” fill a small arena. If it were just about buying their CD’s….they would all succeed, but if it comes down to singing AND performing….we would only see a few of them 10 years from now…and phillip, hollie, Elise, Joshua, Heejun nor Jessica (the Business would gobble her up)….would still be around.

Morning……

Last night was NOT the best idol performances that I have seen, but not quiet the worse either. I don’t think that any of them deserved the standing O, not even Elise. DeAndre, not much to say here, except that he was just plain awful.

I thought Skylar did a very good job of Gunpowder and Lead. She is a mini Miranda Lambert even with the stomping and moving around the stage. That is exactly what ML does in her performances, if you have ever seen her perform. Skylar isn’t much younger that ML was when she was on Nashville Star. People who watched NS said that Miranda would never make it in country music, but by doggies, she has and made it big!!!!!! I know that some here doesn’t care for cm, and always seem to put down the country singers, but country is a very large revenue and there is always room for one more.

It seems like no matter what Hollie sings, the judges always come down hard on her. It’s so easy to see who they favor, and JLo is just plain silly on how she responds to the male singers. I will give JLo credit last night, she didn’t say Goosies the first time. At least I didn’t hear her if she did.

My choice to go home is: DeAndre or Heejun.

Good morning.

First, let me say this, Jenny, you are a fool, but thanks for the laugh first thing this morning with you listening to DeAndre and thinking your cat got it’s tail stuck in the door. Straight up comedy.

DeAndre sang a very, very difficult song. Eric Benet would have been PROUD of his rendition. If anyone could pull that song off with all the high notes, it is DeAndre and he delivered. Although I initially liked his hair, time to do something with that head of sheep hair.

Secondly, Sam-A, I love the color Taupe and it deserves a Standing O simply because a Taupe pump goes with just about any outfit  Let’s raise our glasses to the color TAUPE!

Next, the judges are getting on my last nerve. I can only imagine the hurt Jessica felt when they praised her singing, but gave just about everyone a freaking standing O, but not her! To me that sent a negative ripple effect to the viewers. Subliminally, I feel they are blacklisting her while praising her at the same time. Yeah, weird, but it’s how I feel.

Loved Philip2X. That was a great performance.

I even liked Elise’s performance, although I think she might have hurt vocals on one of those high pitched notes (lol). Seriously, she did very well…

Vast, I agree with your detailed assessment totally! You give props to Hollie and Skylar where others do not. Sylar is an exciting performer and a joy to watch with a great voice, and Hollie gets way too much criticism from the judges and I don’t know why, as she has a gorgeous voice and IMO better than Jessica’s, who over-sings and over-vibratos time and again, and when she over-does it her voice simply grates. She’d be great on Broadway, whereas Hollie is more operatic (and in such a small package. Wow.) And yes, Elise killed on Zeppelin but her voice, overall, never cut it for me; kinda too raspy and not pretty to listen to. Would do well at upbeat Bar Mitzvah parties and in an opener band for other groups. And Phillips, yeah, he is always interesting to watch but I’d like to see him change up the grit to show his softer more beautiful side (aside from his great looks!!!).

I think your entire blog piece was aimed at protecting one of your favs (and my worst) lack of vocal talent…… Phil, aka PP.

My take on PP? I think he’s a talented musician, but struggles with vocals. He uses a lot of tricks, growls and screams to get through, and apparently the mainstream loves it. What’s also apparent, is that Idol mainstream loves all WGWG (white guy with a guitar). Case in point: If Idol selected Off-key Lee, they will accept anybody that’s a WGWG. PP is just a product of the mainstream trend.

Also, I wouldn’t dare compare this extra regular performer with the great Dave Mathews. Are you guys serious?! If his aim is to portray himself as a protege of Dave Matthews, then PP’s effort is simply……”pp”.

Pitchy, we have to part here. DeAndre actually hurt my ears last night. he sounded like two cats in heat screetching at each other. It’s beyond my imagination (and I have a pretty good one) to understand how anyone could interpret his performance as “good”. It was extremelly unpleasant to hear. And it doesn’t matter at all about what the Benet character’s performance sounded like (which I’m guessing I’d also hate if it was a single iota like that thing last night), we weren’t listening to him, only to DeAndre – just a wholly painful experience. And shame he’s such a poor singer because he has a really cute face (hate the hair, but I think you kinda agree about that), and seems to be a very sweet young man. I’d really like to see him with a good voice, since I have to see him on the show, but it hasn’t/won’t happen.

“And it doesn’t matter at all about what the Benet character’s performance sounded like (which I’m guessing I’d also hate if it was a single iota like that…” – And that’s the point, Sam-A. He sang the song the way the song was meant to be sung. You wouldn’t like the original so of course you wouldn’t like his version.

Now, how many hear are NOT comparing the original songs to how the Idols are performing them, THEN adding how they are actually singing the song? My point is how the original song is sung DEEPLY reflects on how the Idols are performing it. Not everyone can or should change the original tempo of the song and get away with it like Jessica did last week.

My top performers of the night:

1.Jessica – This was an okay performance for me, but she’s just that good. No idol vocalist is on her level. She’s simply the best I’ve seen on Idol in years.

2.Elise – Quite evident she’s performed this song countless times before. Her performance is where Phil aspires to be. Great job!

3.Joshua – He just pulled off a song that I thought was going to be a disaster. He is who he is…..another talented vocalist that has no chance of winning. Great job last night.

4.Heejun – You can’t just sing a Donny Hathoway song, you have to connect with it. Heejun felt the song and it came through. Yeah, his enunciation was a bit weak, but he handled that song with confidence. Great job!

5.DeAndre – Difficult song to perform, and those who have heard the original know what I mean. This was right down his alley, and he was actually decent IMO. If you didn’t like Deandre’s performance, you probably wouldn’t care for the original either. Be real about it. Like I always say, the guy can sing, but he needs training to reach his full potential. As stated above, my top performers last night were Jessica, Elise, and Joshua. My take on everybody else:

Hollie – Forgettable performance. I’m tired of her ballads, and the tempo needs to pick up. She’s slipping slowly into obscurity. Good vocalist, but severely lacks a personality. This will haunt her in the near future. Decent job.

Colton – AKA Cricket [legs] was forgettable last night too. He was better in the group performance. You could actually tell he was a much better singer than Phil (not hard to do).

Phil – His enunciation was bad. His voice clarity was awful. His inconsonance was apparent in the group performance. He moves as though he suffers from incontinence. Best part of his performance is that it was an up-tempo song. I can sub this guy for any bar singer in Atlanta and Idol mainstream will vote for him regardless. His success is based on the mainstream’s love for WGWG. What can I say?

Skylar – She’s steadily declining. Her phrasing is suffering, she’s not controlling her breathing during songs, and her weaknesses are being exposed every week. She used to be one of my favorites. How disappointing.

My opinion (only valuable to me, I know)

Deandre: sick, whiney, I fast forward when he is on
Colton: not quite as bad as Deandre, but almost
HeeJun: korny, boring – pls get him out of there
Joshua: better than HeeJun – but worse than everyone else – he is too screechy
Hollie: she can do it – she just needs the right song and coaching – she is a little too timid
Skylar: fascinating to watch, I love that Southern Rocker girl style
Jessica: always good – but not great last night – she is a little boring
Philip: always good, original, and consistent – but maybe too consistent
Elise: was the best last night, – I sure do wish she would sing “Stairway to Heaven”

Wow. dump on Deirdre Day! LOL!

Yes, Pitchy I agree that the judges’ job is not to boost the down-trodden. I wasn’t defending them, just saying that the standing o’s seemed to have an ulterior motive.

As for Eric Benet’s version, I have already stated that I know it and like it. IMO, Deandre’s version was a terrible, off-key imitation. My opinion, nothing more.

And G…that’s for the psycho-analysis but it’s faulty considering that I was thinking of Elise when I talked about singers vs voices.

I promise you, last night was the only time I have watched AI in about three years. Guess what, the guy DeAndre was singing. My wife was in the bathroom doing her hair and she came out to see who this kid was and see smiled. I didn’t know who song he sang and didn’t care but his voice took me back to the late 60’s or early 70’s. Sorta reminded me of Stylists, Blue Magic??, or Phillip Bailey w/ EWF. Not at their level, but reminded me of them.

I also knew, the vast majority of the bloggers on here didn’t like this type of music. So, I checked in and wasn’t disappointed.

Wp, yes Joe is another singer as opposed to a voice.

The argument for most people is that Idol picks the best singer. All I’m saying is sometimes the best singer isn’t the one with the best voice.

Ex. Jordin Sparks had the best voice but Melinda Doolittle was the best singer(again, my opinion, not some edict from the gods) Yes, obviously Jordin was more marketable and, again, imo, has become a really good singer since Idol.

To me, this year, Jessica has the best voice but Elise is a better singer. Doesn’t mean I think Elise should win but it DOES mean I think she deserves a chance.

I see where this is headed. Jessica is head and shoulders above the rest of the group in ability, however this is a talented group. The judges are going to have to use their save for the week she will be voted off because the audience is going to assume she is safe just on her ability and vote for their favorite. I believe the final two will be eventually be Jessica and Hollie with a female buildup of the Ruebin and Clay finale. Jessica will win but Hollie will be the bigger star, she has the look to pick up the Hannah Montana, Brittany Spears crowd which equals $$$. I do not see Jessica as a huge selling artist although she can sing better than anyone else. I think her issue is that she sings everyone else’s songs so well that we have yet to figure out what is her own style and her own voice. I am rooting for her to win the whole thing.
My prediction for the final 5 in no particular order, Jessica, Hollie, Colton, DeAndre, and Phillip. (I am not feeling the whole Phillip fever of him being one of the best).

Need to check the water there and distribute it nationally. That’s where Luke Bryan is from, one of country’s newer male stars. And also Buster Posey, the SF Giants catcher who I think was the MVP in the World Series two years ago. There’s somebody else that’s well-known from there and can’t think of who it is right now. I clearly see why some of the comments said Phil is trying to rip off Dave Matthews. Check out his “Tripping Billies” and “Ants Marching” stage performances and then look at the photo of Phil at the top of this blog. He stands and holds the guitar like Dave but very much lacks Dave’s range and stage command. I absolutely believe he is trying to channel Dave Matthews. And he knows with the success in Idol Performers such as Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox and Kris Allen, Phil knows he audience LIKES that kind of performer. I compensates for his so-so voice/range by growling through half the lyrics.

Carly, you are pretty much on point with Phil. But Dave Mathews? The closet Phil can come to Dave is playing air guitar.

And Nutmeg said somewhere that she’s so tired of WGWGs winning. Me too.

I readily admit to knowing nothing about Dave Matthews – never seen him perform, don’t know any of his songs. Philx2 reminds me of Chris Martin of Coldplay. Cuter face, but similar and twinkly kind of personality like Chris M.

Nutmeg also said that Phil was good, really good. And I’ll stand by the poll results, which name my top 3 picks and my bottom three picks from last night. Neg

March 29th, 2012
2:55 pm

Neg’s take:

1. Elise – Simply one of the greatest performances in Idol history. Incredible vocals, authenticity, intensity, looked great and demonstrated fearless stage presence. She flat killed it. Moving forward, Elise is the Idol for me this season. She’s The One.

2. Phillip – I see a lot of similarities between Elise and Phillip. He pours it all out into every song, is fearless, and has a strong, gritty vocal style. He lacks some range and versatility, but when in his wheelhouse he’s absolutely fantastic.

3. Heejun – Yes, I really, actually liked him tonight! I thought it was a moving performance, pitch-perfect vocal, and ideal song choice for him. Enjoyed seeing sincerity for once, too.

4. Skylar – Incredible fireball on stage. Love her personality and sass, but her vocals are somewhat limited to a single range.

5. Hollie – She’s a cupie doll with a powerhouse voice. Like hearing her belt out the chorus, but when she’s trying to deliver subtlety in the verses she stumbles a bit.

6. Jessica – A little pompous with the elaborate staging and production, but props for artsy interpretation. Her voice and authenticity come up a bit thin for me.

7. Joshua – I’m not feeling him, and haven’t since the beginning. He sounds the same on every song, and his tone annoys me.

8. Colton – Like Joshua, not feeling him and haven’t since the beginning. He sounds the same on every song and his tone annoys me.

9. DeAndre – Go away. Please, please, please go away.

Jenny @ 2:33 – yes, America IS that dense … in many respects

Jenny

March 29th, 2012
3:20 pm

Deirdre, I absolutely DO agree that Phil is very good, a talented musician. I’ve liked him fairly well from the beginning (though his recent constipated expressions are beginning to bother me.)

I just think Jessica and Hollie are both more talented, and “Phil”s are a dime a dozen. For that reason, I have a big problem with Phil winning. And I also have a problem because he’s yet another WGWG. I don’t object to that style, but I think Idol’s got a big issue with *only* WGWGs winning for the past 4 years, even when others are more talented.

Can America not see past a cute male? Really? Let’s take a look at the last 4 winners.

David Cook deserved his win.

Kris Allen, though talented, did *not*. Adam was far better.

Off-Key Lee DEFINITELY did not. Everyone was far better. (and “cute” is debatable.)

Scotty was just average. Lauren or Haley deserved the win more. Lauren clearly outsang him in the finals, but she still had no chance.
(and again, “cute” is debatable… only if you like Howdy Doody.)

Deirdre

March 29th, 2012
3:21 pm

Thanks for trying Jenny but as someone said earlier, you might as well just get out the Charmin.

Neg…I’m all for your picks except for Heejun. He DID do a lot better but still not of the quality of some of the others. I like Jessica’s voice a lot more than her singing.

Deirdre

3:25 pm

But Jenny, Adam would STILL have been a WG.

I thought Haley deserved the win but, since she was not in the finals, the voters chose correctly, imo. Lauren wasn’t good enough for 2nd place imo.

As for Lee…..EVERYBODY that year was awful or, at least, inconsistent except Crystal who’s genre was not even close to mainstream. As much as I hate to say it, that left off-key Lee the most likely, if not even close to the best, choice.

3:30 pm

Thanks Rodney. I wasn’t sure where to post!

Jenny

March 29th, 2012
3:31 pm

Sam, exactly. And just for the record, I am using “WGWG” to describe a STYLE. Not the person’s race and gender. WGWG to me means that laid-back, guitar-strumming style.

Deirdre

March 29th, 2012
3:35 pm

So Crystal, if she had won, could also be labeled WGWG? ;-)

Jenny

March 29th, 2012
3:40 pm

The laid-back, guitar-strumming STYLE of singing didn’t deserve the win when Adam, Crystal, Lauren and Haley were all better.

Why couldn’t Crystal have won just because she wasn’t as mainstream? Everyone I knew thought she was far, far and away the best singer that season.

Deirdre… Why does the winner have to be mainstream? David Cook wasn’t as mainstream as David Archuleta (who, much to all of your certain dismay, I liked very well and voted for. :-) ) They were both good and either of them deserved the win (since it couldn’t be Mike or Carly.)

And Haley should’ve won (well, Pia maybe should’ve won, but since she got booted…) but if Haley couldn’t win, Lauren should’ve. Both were far, far, FAR better than Alfred E. Neumann with his cheesy winks. ;-)

Seriously, I didn’t *hate* Scotty, but he got really old (plus he started just phoning it in, too.) Third place would’ve been about right for him,

Deirdre

March 29th, 2012
3:41 pm

Seriously though, I don’t see much of a problem. The only one of this group who definitely should not have won is off-key Lee….and that’s just an opinion, too. There are lots of people who would argue in his favor.

Truth be told, whoever wins, wins. Doesn’t seem to make much difference in the whole fame thing at all.

Jenny

March 29th, 2012
3:42 pm

Hahahaha D! Well, since girl and guy both start with G, I guess so! But in her case, that *style* wouldn’t have been getting an undeserved win over *talent* (because there wasn’t any. ;-) )

Sam-A

March 29th, 2012
3:42 pm

I’d just like to see the best singer from the getgo win for a change. For me, Season 1 was the only time that ever happened. Not talking about the best of the leftovers, but the very best one all along.

Jenny

March 29th, 2012
3:47 pm

D, I guess where I’m seeing the problem is not just the WGWG style, but (sorry Sam) the fact that as Nutmeg mentioned earlier, a Y chromosome seems to be required to win Idol. So yeah, in spite of my above posts, maybe I *am* fussing about the gender bias.

For example, last year when there was a mass exodus of girls while much-less-talented cute boys stayed. And this year, when the first show landed 3 very good girls in the bottom 3 while the likes of Deandresanjaya stayed.

I don’t know. For me, something’s just off lately. Talent, voice, and singing/performance ability should rule the show… and it doesn’t.

Jenny

March 29th, 2012
3:48 pm

Yes, Sam… was typing & just saw your 3:42 post… but YES. That’s what all my rambling is getting at. The best singer from the get-go should win. The last time that happened (IMO) was Carrie.

G

March 29th, 2012
3:49 pm

The Voice vs American Idol singers:

Kim Yarbrough (power soul singer) vs Jessica
Jermaine Paul (gospel/r&b) vs Joshua
Erin Willette (country/blues) vs Skylar
Mathai vs Elise
Tony Vincent (rock) vs Colton
Chessa (pop) vs Hollie
Jesse Campbell/Jamar Rogers (r&b/neo-soul) vs Deandre
Pip vs Phil

The Voice singers I listed above are all better than Idol contestants (even Jessica). Kim Yarbrough has the experience over Jessica, and she devoirs younger singers. Jessica and Sera Hill would be a closer call.

This is why I like The Voice better than Idol. WGWGs don’t dominate and there is more variety. The mainstream for the Voice is a bit different than Idol.

Deirdre

March 29th, 2012
3:49 pm

I never said someone who is mainstream had to win…they are just more likely to win because more people will like their particular style. Crystal’s style was laid back guitar strummer but she was also very folksy which was mainstream back when I was in HS (sometime in the dark ages)

Last year it really didn’t matter who else was good. Scotty’s unique voice and country charm won over the voters. And I don’t believe he was JUST popular with the tweens.

Deirdre

March 29th, 2012
3:52 pm

BUT GUYS…..the “best singer” is a matter of taste. What you like, what I like and what G likes and anyone else on this blog are different. So whoever is the “best singer” to you ISN’T the “best singer” to someone else.

So no matter WHO wins, there’s going to be a big bunch of people unhappy with the outcome.

Jenny

March 29th, 2012
3:53 pm

D, that’s how my husband saw it with Scotty… he said America’s going to love their country boy, and he’s going to be hard to beat. *I* didn’t love their country boy… but that’s just me. :-)

And as for Lee and Crystal… they both were WGWG’s, haha! But Lee, the lesser talent, won that duel because he was male. And THAT’s where I have the problem.

Deirdre

March 29th, 2012
3:54 pm

Just sayin’ Maybe we can’t always blame the results on tweens or females with crushes. Maybe there are just a lot more people who like someone ELSE more.

G

March 29th, 2012
3:57 pm

To me, WGWG in Idol terms refers to race, gender, and genre’/style. It is what it is. Idol rewards this category. Dave Mathews is one of my favorite WGWG. He’s actually really good. Phils’ problem is that HE CAN NOT SING, but Idol mainstream is giving him a pass; giving him credit for doing his own thing. LOL! Okay. Joshua and the other seven are doing their own thing too, but are criticized for it.

Jenny

March 29th, 2012
3:58 pm

D @3:52… yep! and therein lies the issue. I can’t understand why someone could possibly think Phil is a better singer than Jessica… while others can’t understand why I think Hollie is a better singer than Colton. None of us will ever agree exactly (yet we sure do have fun debating it! :-) )

BUT I still say Idol overall has a problem. Until they fix the broken voting system, the cute boy will ALWAYS win, no matter who anyone thinks is the best singer.

Jenny

March 29th, 2012
4:00 pm

D @3:54… I don’t think so. See my comment directly above about the broken voting system. It’s due to the crushes. And the willingness of kids to vote for hours on end.

I would bet a million dollars that if we’d had fair voting, similar to DWTS, we would’ve had different winners for at least two of the past four years.

Jenny

Deirdre

First, I’m not so sure about the different winners. Yes, it’s possible that madly text-voting teens are monopolizing the voting but, to assume they don’t have taste in music is just not right…plus, these are the kids who are buying the music.

There was a huge difference between who the adults preferred, let’s say, in the Kris/Adam debate. Many people on this blog MUCH preferred Kris. Why? Well, let’s give Kris his due. The kid started as a total underdog and worked his way to the finals with solid and excellent performances. I still think his interpretation of Ain’t No Sunshine is one of the best I’ve ever heard.

In the meantime, Adam(who I loved and voted for) got ALL the media attention. He was EVERYWHERE and all the other Idols that year could only stand smiling in the background. Am I hinting at a backlash…well, sure, that’s possible. But, just as not everyone loved Queen’s over-the-top performances, not everyone appreciated Adam’s theatrical style. I am not saying homophobia here, I’m saying that Adam’s style is not for everyone.

So did Kris win that year because of madly texting tweens or did he win because he was less “out there”, more comfortable, less Kiss and more John Mayer?

Maybe I like to give people more credit than they deserve but I’m not sure any of the outcomes would have been different if texting was eliminated as a means of voting….some maybe, but not all.

Jenny, speaking of denseness…in the American people’s defense, look at what it’s being fed, news-wize. I remember when the morning shows on NBC and ABC were brimming with interesting news and only the occasional puff piece (for beginning anchor women). This morninng I watched ABC and except for a short interview with Julia Roberts about her Snow White novie, most of the time what was presented was of such little interest I kept the program on mute. Hysterically laughing anchor people, gossip, more gossip, and then they had somebody with objectionable hair from “Jersey Shore” spinning records and talking about himself for a good 15 minutes.

Jenny @3:58/D @3:52… yep! and therein lies the issue. I can’t understand why someone could possibly think Phil is a better singer than Jessica… while others can’t understand why I think Hollie is a better singer than Colton.

The biggest issue IMO is Idol isn’t just based on talent. People vote on the genre/style they feel more comfortable with, who they are attracted to, the back stories they feel compelled by, who entertains them the most, and a limited belief of what they feel is true talent. If you made a pie chart of the aforementioned, vocal talent would probably be the smallest slice.

Wasn’t it established that Kris “won” because AT&T cheated by lending multi-voting phones to people attending Kris parties in his home state?

@Bill G. – Yes Badfinger wrote and did the original Without You but I think we could agree that Nilsson did the definitive version. Badfinger didn’t even release it as a single. Before he burned out his voice with cigs and booze he had one helluva voice. Nilsson did exactly what the judges on AI have asked countless times. He made the song his own. The writer’s version or even the original release by a non-writer is often superseded. Leon Russell wrote Superstar but I only remember Karen Carpenter singing it, which leads to…

@highlander – Agree fully that in this case that Leon Russell as the writer did the definitive version and I never even mentioned it BTW. I think in part his original is the definitive version is because it was so personal as a love song to Mary. Just as no one can cover Clapton’s Tears in Heaven with the same emotion even though he isn’t the greatest vocalist out there. Which leads to…

@Deirdre – I fully agree with what you were saying about the different types that gain notoriety. To me there are vocalists whose voice is a beautiful instrument, stylists who can envelope you into a song without the greatest voice and pop idols. Rarely do the 3 converge.

Mercedes, that was “established” only in the minds of the Adam fans. AT&T had been holding voting parties for BOTH Kris and Adam…..as they had for Clay and Ruben, Carrie and Bo, Archie and Cookie, and so on. There was nothing new about what happened there. Adam fans, just like Clay fans cannot accept that Adam could have lost fair and square.

I don’t judge “Idol” by whether someone is a better singer than the other. I base it on who is entertaining me more. There are a lot of great singers but boring performers. Being a technically good singer doesn’t equate to star quality. That’s why there are so many stars who aren’t great singers per se but are great entertainers. If someone happens to be a great singer and entertainer, that’s a bonus but hardly the only qualifying aspect in the grand scheme of things.

True D, you do have points there. Kris *was* good. He clawed his way up, and I fully give him his due. I bought “Ain’t No Sunshine” and probably another one or two of his from iTunes.

My husband (who wanted Danny Gokey to win, and also liked Kris) couldn’t stand Adam most weeks. To him, Adam screamed. But though he didn’t like him, he did admit that Adam was very talented and should’ve won. And literally every other adult I know who watches the show thought Adam was robbed.

His style was not for everyone… but my point is, whether you liked him or hated him, Idol hasn’t seen someone with that level of talent since probably Carrie. His talent was obvious even to those who didn’t like his style.

And though Kris was good too, it really was a clear injustice. I mean, Simon couldn’t even bring himself to applaud for Kris.

I don’t know. To each his own, everyone’s taste differs… but Kris’ win was a clear W-T-F moment. Even Kris responded to his win with “It should have been Adam.”

And that’s the issue. I truly believe that if Carrie or Kelly were on the show today, they couldn’t win. Even their incredible talent would lose out to a boy.

And the tweens may be buying (some of) the records, but they also think people like Jessica Simpson are talented…. given that, what are we supposed to assume about their taste? ;-)

I think the 2 best singers should be obvious to everybody. But that’s just who I like. You like 2 different people. G likes 2 different people. Sam and Harriett and Rodney and everyone else here has different opinions on who the best, most talented singers are.

That’s how it is in the rest of the country, too. G says Phil isn’t talented. I say he is. Neither one of us is wrong because talent is subjective. I think Elise is a way better singer than Hollie. Some people would think I’m nuts. Others would agree.

Talent is in the ear of the listener.

T’is true Jenny. But thankfully, actual “music” seems to be making a return, thanks to some of the good groups, our Kelly, Adele, even Gaga to a certain degree. And the (not really) country stuff like Lady Antebellum helps too. I can actually flip from my oldies stations to Star 94 and B 98 and hear some pretty good songs (along with some dreck of course).

As for “G’s” comment earlier pitting The Voice VS American Idol, I have watched “Voice” for the first time this year from the get-go and enjoy it more than I thought I would. The biggest problem with TV is that the judges have too much control over who advances. A great example of that was the other night when the young country boy(17 or 18) from GA was up against the Spanish(?) female street singer. I have no idea why Blake Shelton paired those two, and even worse why he would give them a reggae song to sing in their duet. BS(yeh, I know, perfect fit) basically sealed the young guy’s fate right there. The song was perfectly suited for her but completely foreign to him. That’s not the only time something like that has happened, but was the best example so far. Even though the ratings have fallen off, I still think AI is an all-around better show than all the others. I personally think the show would get a bump up in the ratings if they would get rid of these 3 current judges. They are mostly “clones” of each other, and ST seems to be off in space sometimes. Probably a reason for that!

I understand what some of you are saying in terms of a great voice vs entertainment value. I think James Brown is one of the greatest soul entertainers and innovators ever. His music transended generations, even into hip hop. However, I think that David Ruffin is a better soul singer than James Brown. Bobby Brown was probably the last great r&b entertainers (no singer) that was around.

I happen to think that Michael Jackson was good at everything. But Whitney Houston was a powerhouse vocalist much like Celine, and all you have to be entertained by is……their voice. Mariah……her voice.

When you guys get a whif of Nicki Minajs’ performance tonight………….I feel a few Fantasia references will follow.

@G – And I’m not opposed to falsetto but there is a fine line between good and evil. Good and it has a timbre that sounds effortless. Bad and it sounds breathy like an amateur flute player and it easily misses the pitch. Great falsetto singers to me include Smokey Robinson, Eddie Kendricks, Curtis Mayfield, Freddy Mercury, Prince… There are many but not all appeal to me. I was never a big fan of the Bee Gees for example. To me Deandre has no appeal as a singer and I couldn’t care less about his hair, well if he wasn’t bouncing and flipping it all the time as his hook it wouldn’t anyway. To each their own and he is simply not my cup of tea. Do I think he will be eliminated anytime soon? No. I was a teenage DJ in an era with hits from Sean Cassidy, Bobby Goldsboro, Tony Orlando… I nearly gagged with every spin but vive la différence!

Phil Phillips is definitely trying to be like Dave Matthews…..fail. Casey Abrams last year tried to do that growling and you see where it got him. If Phil wants to win, he has to sing and stop growling. Also…his moves aren’t as cool as Dave Matthews…i.e..stop jacking up that one shoulder in a constipated shrug and just relax. Stop twisting your face as you growl a note you cannot possibly reach.

I think Elise and Jessica will be the final 2. They both have solid performances. Jessica is amazing, Elise is becoming a force. I hope this time around 2 women battle it out at the finals as the current women group are great this season. I am rooting for Jessica Sanchez. She’s just so consistent.
