During the 1 p.m. hour today, former Snellville resident and “Idol” runner-up Diana DeGarmo will debut a song today on the CBS soap “The Young & the Restless.”
Playing her foul-singing Jersey mob boss’s daughter Angelina, she has mostly been torturing standards up to this point. But now she gets to sing an original, “Good Goodbye.” Her boyfriend Ace Young, from season 5, co-wrote the song with her. It’s supposed to be a turning point to her character. Her character on the most part has been pushy and full of herself.
DeGarmo has been on the show since Halloween, but word in soap circles is she will be leaving the show as early as next week.
We spoke to her and Ace last month before rumors of her character’s departure began to spread.
Has singing poorly on purpose hurt her real singing voice? “No! Thank goodness. I’m keeping up good singing habits as much as I can because outside the show, I’m still singing. Of course, Angelina is getting better. Maybe she’ll even be as good as Diana DeGarmo one day. You have to dream big!”
Her favorite outfit as Angelina: “I think the craziest was this velveteen python dress. I thought it was a shirt. There were no pants with it. It was this one-shoulder contraption. They wanted to see how far the wardrobe department could go.”
Watching “Jersey Shore”? “Angelina nor I need to watch ‘Jersey Shore’ for pointers. But we are fans. Definitely Snooki is someone we look up to. I do think Snooki’s pretty great. She doesn’t let anyone bring her down. I love that. And I have my Jersey friends when I need advice.”
How do actual Jersey folks think of her Angelina accent? “It depends upon who you’re talking to. For the most part, friends of mine from Jersey think Angelina’s accent is pretty on point.”
Will Kevin ever fall in love with Angelina? “I know she sure hopes so. She did try to get him to marry her.”
The new song is a country ballad. Ace: “Diana came up with a brilliant idea for the actual song. We knocked it out very fast. We got a couple of friends to produce it to make sure it sounded how Angelina would have wanted to sound.”
You can hear it on YouTube:
Diana: “This is as close to a Diana DeGarmo song as Angelina is going to get.”
Their group All Access. Ace: “We write for each other and with each other. We always have fun. We have since put together a fun group and done nine songs together. It’s just fun. We let Diana sing her country songs with a live band. Our other artists can do their style, more like new Motown. We are trying to make it about the music.”
Ace talks about getting on “Idol” and its impact on him: “Before ‘Idol,’ I was writing for Brian McKnight and New Edition and five other acts. The label told me to try ‘American Idol.’ I did. It was the best high I’ve had in my life. Now I can score movies. I can do music for anybody. I got to co-write Daughtry’s first hit and it was nominated for a Grammy. I got a No. 1 song overseas as well. And through it, I met Diana. I have an outlet where I can tell people who I am, what I stand for in music.”
His thoughts on “Hair”: “It was a very emotionally freeing experience. I feel like music right now is really force fed. You never get to feel the artists, to shake their hands.
Diana’s thoughts on Katharine McPhee and “Smash.” “We’re so proud of it. It’s a great show. It’s great what Katharine McPhee is doing for the ‘Idol’ brand. She’s a talented girl. It’s great for Broadway to be getting more of a pop culture light.”
- In other “Idol” news, Nicki Minaj and Scotty McCreery will perform next week and Kelly Clarkson will tape a performance for a future results show. (No hard feelings for Kelly popping up on “The Voice”!)
And Nigel tweeted: “next week they’re singing their #IDOL’s songs. Beyonce, Mariah, Miranda, Lifehouse, Daughtry, Led Zeppelin. Now that should be interesting?” Hmmm… wonder who will sing Miranda Lambert (Skylar)? And Led Zeppelin (probably Colton, though he has done Daughtry before, so it could be Phillip). And Jessica is all over Mariah. Who would sing, gulp, Lifehouse? Heejun? As for Beyonce, Elise??? Or Joshua?
