ABC thinks the world needs another music reality competition show.
This summer, the network is debuting a “Duets” competition show featuring four big stars: Georgia’s own Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland, “American Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson, R&B star Lionel Richie and R&B singer Robin Thicke.
This straight from the press release:
Clarkson, Nettles, Richie and Thicke will individually set out on a journey across America looking for undiscovered talent worthy of being their protégés. Ultimately, each superstar will choose two singers to be his/her duet partners. Together the superstars and their protégés will take the stage each week and perform in front of a live studio audience. In the end, only one duet will be at the top of the charts, and the winning amateur will receive a recording contract with Hollywood Records.
Clarkson said in the release:
“The simple fact that I get to go out and find two people that I believe in, sing with them every week, and help them accomplish their dream is an amazing thing that I can’t wait to be a part of!”
Nettles said this:
“The concept of ‘Duets’ is so fresh because its mentoring is active and participatory. Most of my greatest learning was from singing and playing with other performers throughout my life and career. To have had the opportunity to perform with an established artist would have been so incredible when I was up and coming.”
With this quartet of stars, ABC is clearly trying to emulate NBC’s “The Voice,” which features four current artists as mentors. Nettles’ group Sugarland has garnered more than a dozen big hits on the country chart since 2004. Clarkson is one of the biggest stars to come out of “Idol.” Thicke is a fixture on the R&B charts.
Richie may be considered more of an artist from the 1970s and 1980s but he still releases new music and his 2006 album actually went gold.
And funny: Clarkson, Thicke and Richie are all guest mentors on “The Voice.”
