2012-American-Idol-11-Top-24-PHOTOS-Jessica-Sanchez

Jessica Sanchez is a shoo in for the top 13.

Clearly, Nigel Lythgoe told the judges tonight to be more critical than they were last night. He even had Ryan Seacrest feed Randy Jackson a question about it so Randy could acknowledge they were too “soft” on the guys.

The women, in the end, showed more highs and lows than the guys, who were relatively consistent overall. It was nice to hear the judges even occasionally be critical. (Yes, the word “nightmare” came out of Randy’s mouth twice!)

The highs were easy to pinpoint and these ladies will likely go through tomorrow: Jessica Sanchez, Skylar Laine, Hollie Cavanagh, Elise Testone. The fifth in will probably be Erika Van Pelt, who I enjoyed tonight but performed in the sketchy second slot tonight.

The lows were godawful bad and are all guaranteed goners: Baylie Brown, Brielle Von Hugel, Haley Johnson.

Biggest disappointment: Jen Hirsh, based on her earlier audition numbers. She wasn’t as sharp as she could have been. And Baylie also let nerves get in the way after seemingly solid performances during the audition rounds.

In a rare instance that has happened only a couple of times before on “Idol,”  two singers sang the same song: this time it was Adele’s “One and Only.”

Going in, I thought this mix of 12 was perplexing. There were a surfeit of blonds: eight in total. For the first time, there was not a single African-American female. It didn’t help there were ladies named Haley, Hallie and Hollie. This is like season one when we had A.J., EJay and R.J.

My personal ranking of the 12

1. Skylar Laine (”Stay With Me” The Faces) – I am not just about the voice. I am also looking for personality and stage presence. She is not the best vocalist but she picked a song she could wrangle, turning the “Idol” stage into a her own personal big honky-tonk. She committed to the song and even hit a surprisingly strong last note. So I give her top ranking for taking a chance and running with it.

2. Jessica Sanchez (”Love You I Do” Jennifer Hudson) – I’ve been weary of her.I think she has a tendency to over sing, to over-emote, to just take things to 11 when it isn’t necessary. But she picked the right song to get away with that no-holds-barred approach. Indeed, for a 16 year old, she sings with maturity and technical skills well beyond her years. She stamped her ticket to the top 13.

3.  Erika Van Pelt (”What About Love” Heart) – I wasn’t sold on her until tonight. She came out smoking with a hot rendition of a classic Heart song. While the judges claimed she held back at points, I thought she did the song justice and gave the night a much needed rock kick in the pants. Her biggest problem was singing second. That’s a terrible spot to get votes when you have 12 singers.

4. Elise Testone (”One and Only” Adele) – She received the coveted pimp spot, which is extremely helpful at this stage. I had a hard time remembering her to date and I don’t find her a terribly compelling personality but she gave this song a far more nuanced, consistently authentic take than Jen Hirsh.

5. Hollie Cavanagh (”Reflection” Christina Aguilera) – I hate hate hate this song. It would be on my Disney iPod from Hell. Cheesy lyrics. Cheesy arrangement. Cheesy melody. Yuk. But Hollie sang it with confidence. So far, she has one of the best female voices this year. She has a sweet personality and that will help her get votes, too.

6. Hallie Day (”Feelin’ Good” Nina Simone) – People on the live blog said she looks far older than her 24 years. She indeed looks a bit worn down by life but she’s still cute. As for her singing, I thought she opened the smoky beginning portions well but when she opened up partway through, she lost her way. She didn’t have control of the song all the way through. But it might have been good enough to get her through. (In 2010, Votefortheworst noted that this song has not helped most past contestants.)

7. Shannon Magrane (”Go Light Your World (Carry Your Candle)” Kathy Triccoli) – This is a Christian song that is well known in certain circles but not others. She sang it well but to me, the melody felt trite and not terribly compelling. I’m not sure she made this memorable enough for people to vote for her in big numbers. She’s blurring already in my mind in this sea of blond hair.

8. Jen Hirsh (”One and Only” Adele) – She came in with one of the stronger resumes based on her earlier performances. But she stumbled a bit here. She felt too theatrical and didn’t sing the song with what I felt was true conviction. She also missed some notes. She should have attacked it with more fervor.

9. Chelsea Sorrell (”Cowboy Casanova” Carrie Underwood). She isn’t a bad singer but she placed herself in an untenable situation doing a basic karaoke version of a song sung by one of the most popular “Idols” of all time. She lacked the power, timing and stage presence to make the audience go “Wow!” And since she performed first, she was long forgotten by the end.

10. Brielle Von Hugel (”Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” Otis Redding) – She was never the best singer. She needed to show off her personality. This song was a horrendous pick. It’s a pensive, laid-back, soulful tune and she sang it like it was “Fame” or a big show tune. She didn’t get this song at all. She just sang it loudly after a poorly enunciated, low-pitch opener that evoked Mikalah Gordon circa 2005. I wanted this Staten Island teen to go further simply because she’s memorable but this performance will leave her swimming with the “Idol” fishes.

11. Haley Johnson (”Sweet Dreams” Eurythmics) – She took a major risk and I’m certain Vote For the Worst will be rooting for her after this train wreck. Yes, Randy Jackson called it a “nightmare” and “train-wrecky.” She was off key at times. The arrangement veered all over the place. She hit a few decent notes but there was no consistency or flow to her delivery. A big honkin’ mess.

12. Baylie Brown (”Amazed” Lonestar) – None of the guys Tuesday had a performance that would be deemed disastrous. This was a disaster. She was all nerves. She was taking liberties to the melody in very unflattering ways. She failed to show off what I thought were powerful vocals. She sounded weak. She was so bad, Steven Tyler resorted to saying, “You look pretty,” the Paula Abdul-esque way of complimenting someone who sang poorly. She came to the big stage and blew it.

Ratings down

Ratings Tuesday night continued to match what has been happening all year: a major downward spiral. The show drew 16.11 million viewers and a 5.1 18-49 rating. That compares to 14.89 million viewers for “The Voice” and a 5.4 18-49 rating Monday.  In other words, “Idol” is drawing more overall viewers but they are older. “The Voice” is now beating “Idol” in the coveted 18 to 49 year old demo.

Compared to the similar episode a year ago, “Idol” is down 24% from a year ago in overall viewers and nearly one-third among 18-49 year olds. The comparable episode a year ago drew 21.3 million viewers and a 7.5 18-49 rating.

@ Diedre it is my choice whether to like them or dislike them regardless of race or gender. In my opinion, and I mean MY opinion the girls don’t have any WOW FACTOR. Come on next season X-FACTOR. LOL

Good morning, everyone!

Love Jessica. She has great tone and control to her voice.

Mercedes S. – Jessica and Skylar are going to battle.

Rodney, you said, “She’s blurring already in my mind in this sea of blond hair.” Doesn’t this seem just a touch racist? Why is it okay to insinuate that all blondes look alike? Blondes are one minority group that people feel free to put down continually. (And no, I’m not blonde, but think about children who are blonde.) Don’t discriminate or encourage prejudice. Do you know there are greeting card companies that put out “blonde” jokes on their cards? Very unfair.

I will not be watching, no diversity amongst the ladies. Idol is on it’s way out anyway, so I am not surprised. I guess they are trying to hold on the the older caucasian viewers, cause the young hip crowds have started watching the voice and xfactor. Buh-bye idol…..

Donna, blonds get no sympathy from me, they are cute, they have what every woman wants (white women, that is) and it is the best hair color to have. Get over it, Blonds are hot, and they know it. Most are clueless, but, hey, you cant have it all.

Donna, I think Rodney was referring to the fact that we didn’t know these girls very well before last night and with names like Hallie, Hollie & Haley and then the camera panning over all those blonde heads, it was very hard to not be confused.

I also have some serious issues with the color of anyone’s skin being a factor in whether or not someone will watch a show. If it’s just about the quality of the voices then fine.

Mom has yet another appt this morning. I will be back!

“It needs some color. I don’t know what the judges were thinking this season. I will be watching Idol @ a minimum this year. Will continue to watch until America gets stupid and dismiss Mantasia.”

Well it certainly sounds like somebody here needs more color in their life.

I don’t really get the love for Erika. She’s got a cool personality but her voice is just kinda bleh. She can’t really get up there and hit those good notes that are needed.

Ellise is in the same boat, but her performance and raspy sound are good enough to overcome it. But still, in her Adele song there were times in my head I heard that golden note and she instead went down with a sub’ed in run. I didn’t dig that.

Good morning all.

Deirdre, for some reason I forgot the slow blog was on the same page as Cover it Live and was looking for y’all. I was on my iPhone (too tired to sit at my computer desk) and it would not allow me access to CIL on the mobile at first. I finally got onto the fast blog and posted until the end of the show. But, I really would rather have spent the evening with you and the others. Just got through reading all the posts there. You had a good group!

For me Erika struck the strongest note. I loved her song choice and her voice is such a pleasing change from the high ones of both the boys and the girls. I did not love Skylar’s singing and growling on “Stay With Me,” but did really like her performance overall and think she deserves to be in the Top 13. I was simply shocked at Baylie’s bad singing. I liked the boys better.

Ex-Watcher, I didn’t ask for “sympathy” for blondes, just like MLK didn’t advocate for “sympathy” for African Americans. It isn’t okay to discrimiate against a person because of their physical appearance. You saying that blondes are “clueless” isn’t okay. If you ever have blonde children or grandchildren, you’ll know I’m right.

I think Donna makes a very good subtle point. What if Rodney said something like “lost in a sea of dreds”? Oh dear lord the PC police and whining cry babies would be out in full effect. The AJC would probably be forced to replace Rodney. But realy, whats the difference between the real comment and the hypothetical one?

Now dont’ get me wrong, I’m not offended in the least about what ROHO said. What offends me are the hypocrits that think it’s ok to tease about how one person looks, but it’s blasphmey and heads must roll if jokes are made about other types of people. Get over it

I missed Bailey’s performance, sounds like I didn’t miss much. I’ve liked her since she first auditioned 5 years ago. I didn’t think they made the right choice in sending her home then.
Maybe it was my TV, but Jessica’s voice nearly disappeared when in the low register! She hit the money notes exceptionally well.
I didn’t like anything about Brielle’s performance. I was shocked to see her at the top of the pack at DialIdol.com last night. I started thinking about how the online voting makes DialIdol inaccurate. Reasoning that most teens are dialing the phone rather than online voting and texting because texting is limited to AT&T customers. This reasoning would also explain why Eben topped the pack on DialIdol as well.
I thought Chelsea and Erika were both outstanding and had better than average stage presence at this point in the competition.
Elise was very good as well, but I didn’t warm up to her personality much.
Jen was my favorite up until last night. She blew it. I voted for her because she has done SO much better previously and I would like to see her remain in the competition.
Hollie was very good as well, but lacked anything that would make her stand out in the sea of blondes.
Haley made such a huge mistake with Sweet Dreams. She will be a sure bet to go home.

Dierdre said, “and then the camera panning over all those blonde heads, it was very hard to not be confused.” Instead of “blonde heads”, insert any other physical charactertic, such as a color of skin, a shape of eyes, a size of nose…whatever. Still okay to say it’s very hard not to be confused?

Donna, considering that many of those girls decided on their own to color their hair that way, it’s safe to say that they wanted to blend in. The naturals stood out, the fakes blended in, just like they wanted. Same could be said for their singing. Naturals shined, fakes didn’t.

@Donna I wasn’t discriminating in reference to the blonds in a negative way. It was a simplistic way to say that many of these ladies did not distinguish themselves and given how many singers we’ve seen in recent weeks, the unusual number of blond ladies in the group (seven out of 12) made it hard for me to differentiate among some of them. And the name similarities made it even worse.

I am not impressed with Idol this season. I found the shows this week very boring. Not one contestant has the “it” factor, originality or anything. It was like watching a bunch of talented karaoke singers. They all sang better during the auditions. The only contestant that I enjoyed and looked forward to seeing each week was David Leather. I still don’t understand how or why he is not on the show.

RoHo: It’s not just that they all have the exact same shade of blonde, but that it’s mostly all the same length and style, and they’re all very similar in their looks, with some a little prettier, some not quite as pretty – but they do look like they’re all from an assembly line. That said, they’re all attractive and most are pretty talented.

I don’t watch BET, nor do I watch MTV, VH1 (unless they’re doing “Divas” and Kelly is on the show), Cartoon Network, or any of the Hispanic networks – just don’t run the particular shows I’m interested in watching.

What i like about the live blogging is that your listen to the voices more. Everybody’s favorite Jessica meandered in an out, soundwize, and the Migraine girl (Shannon) was nasal and grating. Elize T didn’t blow me away either. Which is why Erika. Hallie Day, Skylar and Hollie became my top four: they were consistent, and all had something “different” in their voices.

Airport delay so I watched the girls’ performances online with the benefit of hi-fi headphones. My take:

1. Jessica Sanchez – Best voice I heard. I would prefer less calisthenics but understand why she felt the need.
2. Elise Testone – Enjoyed her entire performance. Not often I can say that.
3. Hollie Cavanagh – The power and versatility of her voice outweighed a couple of sour notes.
4. Hallie Day – Loved the torch singer vibe. Worked for me.
5. Erika Van Pelt – Good voice and I want to hear more.
6. Skylar Laine – Points off for degree of difficulty even with the glory note. Good presentation but Rita doing Rod was just ok.
7. Shannon Magrane – I liked her well enough but wrong time and place to be singing the song Mom picked out.
8. Chelsea Sorrell – You have to pick a song with more than a 1 octave range in an elimination round.
9. Jennifer Hirsh – Milquetoast.
10. Haley Johnson – Terrible song choice and her variations were all wrong.
11. Baylie Brown – Easy on the eyes, tough on the ears.
12. Brielle Von Hugel – Excruciating. Thank heaven for a FF button.

Wastrel, the one and only commercial I ever did was for a wig. An early cheezy Turner job. We were three girls put on stools and swiveled around, a camera on our bewigged heads and a male announcer who wanted to know if the hair was real or not. Catch phrase “Only Larry Matthews will know!” Payment: the Larry Mathews wig. Mine was so hideous I threw it away.

I think one of Madge’s catch phrases was “you’re soaking in it now” (the scenario was a lady getting a manicure, with her fingers dipped into a bowl).
