‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ recap, season 4, episode 14: Kandi gets mad

rhoa_south_africa_a_lAt the end of last week’s episode, the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” clan set aside their usual idiocies, jealousies and arguments after meeting with the poorest of the poor in South Africa. The afterglow continues during the first moments of tonight’s episode.

“We are very blessed,” said a relaxed and unusually chipper NeNe Leakes.

“Some of our squabbles are miniscule in comparison,” voice-of-reason Phaedra Parks said. “We forget how fortunate we are as individuals.”

(Except for painfully self-absorbed Marlo Hampton, who complains about raw shrimp while Phaedra is uttering those lines.)

But we all know that if everything remained Kumbaya, we’d have no TV show. The tinder for this show is conflict, however ridiculous it may be.

The women first hit a museum, where they learn that women in the South African Khosa tribe in the old days were “picked” by the men, whether they wanted them or not. (That would make for a very twisted “Real Housewives of 19th Century South Africa.”)

They then they meet a blunt medicine man who offers to provide readings based on “ancestor bones.” Phaedra is especially grossed out by the prospect of seeing such bones, bemusing considering her fascination with dead folks. But psych! He’ is actually using  shells and dice symbolizing said “ancestor bones.” Not so gross.

With Jeanne Dixon-like certitude, he predicts that Sheree Whitfield will never marry partly because she’s “too old.” (Sheree appears understandably offended.). He then said NeNe is unhappy in general despite the fact her husband Gregg is a good man. She tries to get him to say she’s merely an “unhappy married woman” but is generally happy. He refuses to yield. He also thinks Cynthia Bailey is in a happy marriage. (Snicker.)

The ladies follow with a slumber party at Marlo and NeNe’s pad, where they drink wine and admire Marlos’ 29 pairs of shoes, three for each day of the 10-day trip. Since many are Louboutins and the like, the value of said shoes is probably in the $15,000 to $20,000 range. For a time, the ladies giggle and play act adventurous sexual positions, especially Kandi (she can do a split!), Cynthia and Marlo. Whenever the topic of sex comes up, Sheree seems oddly shut off and NeNe is visibly uncomfortable.

“We’re almost bonding,” said Cynthia, ever the optimist.

Then Kandi notes that she likes Marlo but finds her constant name-dropping of labels materialistic and superficial.

NeNe defends her friend Marlo. “I never got superficial from her,” she said, though she conveniently left out “materialistic.”

Marlo’s voice goes two octaves lower and 50 decibels higher. “Hell no! Be quiet! I love fashion.” Then she blabbered semi-coherently about why fashion means so much to her.

Cynthia cuts in. “You’re screaming!” Later, she tells the Bravo cameras: “If I don’t break this up, they’ll be a lot of designer clothes and weaves flying all over the place.’

The next day, Marlo is too weak and sick to go on safari. Phaedra theorizes that Medicine Man made her sick for being dismissive of his powers.  NeNe watches over her (in blue rubber gloves since she’s a germaphobe.)

The Smalls are joined by Cynthia on the safari and everything seems less tense. Kandi notes how over the top Marlo is. Cynthia agrees. “People feel like this is what validates them,” she said.

Amusingly, the guide tries to get a word in edgewise to point out animals they are missing, but the women are in Full Gossip Mode.

They talk about whether Kim Zolciak (remember her?) would have enjoyed the trip. Cynthia said she can’t picture Kim at an orphanage holding black babies with snot running down their nose. Kandi agrees, then says she doesn’t think Kim would have gone on the trip at all given how much she dislikes so many of them. “She would have come up with some excuse,” Kandi said.

At lunch hour, the Shamwari Game Reserve had set up an outdoor meal and NeNe pulls up in a separate vehicle, minus ill Marlo. NeNe wants to make sure Cynthia isn’t being co-opted by the Smalls.

“I’m eating out where the flies and bugs are. I can hardly take it no more,” NeNe whines. (Guess she won’t be signing up for “Celebrity Survivor” any time soon or more accurately, “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Outta Here!”)

When NeNe finds out they’d been gossiping about Marlo, she gets annoyed. “I don’t have time for this bull****… You sound like a hater. I think the Smalls hate on Marlo because she’s fashionable.” (No. They hate on her because she talks too much, acts all superior and brags about herself and her so-called “etiquette” way too much.)

Cynthia agrees with NeNe to NeNe’s face, much to Kandi’s chagrin. “Cynthia is a little two faced. One minute it’s, ‘I”m sick of hearing about Marlo.’ Then in front of NeNe, it’s ‘Go Marlo!’ She really has a different opinion when NeNe is around.”

NeNe then makes the absurd presumption that Kim is the “Queen Bee” of the Smalls. Kand is offended.

Later, Sheree decides to call Kim.  The conversation is uneventful until Sheree decides to tell Kim what Cynthia and Kandi had said about Kim being uncomfortable holding little black babies at an orphanage – except she placed the onus on Kandi.

Kandi denies she said that, saying she merely didn’t think Kim would go on the trip given her animus toward others in the group – especially NeNe. She also said Cynthia said the “black babies” line.

We see a flashback and yes, Cynthia said it. Problem: Kandi agreed with Cynthia so Sheree was half right. She didn’t say it but agreed with the statement.

That evening, they attend a dinner and get dressed in South African garb and makeup. But Kandi is still perturbed and decides to bring her issues out on the table.

“I felt like my buddy [Sheree] threw me under the bus tonight,” Kandi said to Sheree.

She then got Cynthia to agree Cynthia said the “black babies” line.

“I just don’t like it when someone puts words in my mouth,” Kandi said.

NeNe snidely said, “You all have to report to your boss,” as in Kim.

“We are all bosses!” Kandi said. “I’m the boss of everything I do! I don’t follow any other women.”

NeNe said Kandi and others have joked how Cynthia is NeNe’s puppet but she believes, too, that every woman at that table is their own boss.

Then Kandi gets into Marlo’s face about her materialism – again. Marlo tries to get her to quote every instance. Kandi demurs. “Your words,” she said, “are not that memorable.”

Nobody chimed in to help Kandi out on this one. “I felt like I was all by myself,” she said. “Everybody had so many thoughts [about Marlo] before.”

She said she likes how Marlo dresses but finds her braggadocio “a little obnoxious.”

Marlo shows no signs of humbling herself, saying she will talk about her Coco Chanels and other designer duds as much as she wants.  “They turn me on!” she said. “I will continue to talk about it.”

Cynthia sighs. “Somehow, even here, we get back to the B.S.”

TRAILER

Kim is still fuming over the  “I can’t see Kim holding black babies at an orphanage” line Cynthia said but the heat continues to fall on Kandi.  And Peter plans a one-year wedding anniversary but how big a deal will he make it?

NOTABLE QUOTES

“Smells like pee.” - NeNe observes after sniffing some “medicine” by the medicine man. (Women can’t touch though!)

You got a country where people are starving. Unless you’re giving some of that s*** away, what is the purpose.” - Sheree, marveling over Marlo’s decision to pack 29 pairs of very expensive shoes on the trip.

“Squeeze your Hello Kitty.”Marlo, using a euphemism for a woman’s privates as she demonstrates a favorite sexual position.

“The Shaman don’t like to be mocked, baby.”Phaedra, after hearing Marlo got ill the day after mocking the Medicine Man.

“I am a good judge of character. I really am.”NeNe, defending Marlo.

“As quickly as things change, they stay the same.” - Cynthia, lamenting the Kandi-NeNe-Marlo tiff so soon after the orphanage trip.

RATINGS

Last week’s “Real Housewives” crashed to a season low 2.35 million after hitting almost 4 million a week earlier, but I presume it got a lot of DVR viewing because it was up against a mosnter “Grammy” telecast (39 million viewers!) featuring a Whitney Houston tribute and Adele’s triumphant return. That was the worst first-run numbers for “Housewives” since the third episode of season three.  We’ll see how it rebounds tonight.

How interesting that Kandi (who’s shown her true colors this season by being super messy) is literally shaking in her boots at Sheree revealing to Kim the comment Kandi made about Kim holding a black baby. Why wouldn’t Kandi own up to her statement like she’s always accusing others of not doing. Sheree was right to put Kandi on blast. It’s interesting that Kandi’s so afraid of Kim knowing about her comment, since Kim obviously showed no loyalty to her when she didn’t allow Kandi to enjoy any major percentage of the proceeds from the recording Kandi produced. Why is Kim’s acceptance of her so important?

Marlon needs to know how little “etiquette” she possesses by flaunting her designer apparel, and being so overboard with demands from the people serving them during the trip.

LOL at how the tour guide couldn’t get their attention to point out the animals along the tour–and then as the tour comes to an end, Phaedra makes the comment, “We haven’t seen any animals today!”

Sheree’s hair was simply gorgeous on the after show. That’s the best weave I’ve seen in a long time.

Ah Kandi, while she didn’t make the comment she did agree with Cynthia’s assessment. Cynthia did do a complete about face when Kandi brought up Marlo at the lunch with Nene.

During the show, they showed a preview about an episode that’s going to feature Kim and her baby daddy. I predict that episode will be the lowest ranked one ever and that will give bravo a chance to see how much her individual show is going to flop.

I am beginning to think Sweetie wears her make-up like that on purpose, trying however she can to stay relevant.

@Irony – I laughed at loud when Phaedrea said they didn’t see any animals and then I SMDH (shaked my damn head). Did you notice the look on the driver’s face when he couldn’t get their attention. He was probably saying to himself (I should jerk this truck and throw them all to the animals). AND, who the heck goes on a safarie in 8″ heels. Marlo was overboard and so was NeNe with them darn shoes.

Did anyone else notice NeNe patting the little girl’s hair at the orphanage when they took pictures then delicately stopped. It was quick, but she quickly thought not to pat again (probably for fear of lice).

@Sherry – Kim should have slapped Sweetie for wearing that hideous pink lipstick.

When did this turn into the Real Housewives of Africa? Thanks goodness for The Apprentice, Luck, and the DVR. Hopefully this will be the last season of this dreck, and it will pitifully limp home. And stay there.

Finally, Kandi must back up all that shiet she talks behind everyones back. Always putting fuel into the fire, now she had to fend for herself and failed. Of course she agreed, whether she said it directly or not, the tape does not lie. Not picturing Kim in Africa at an orphanage is not picturing her with Black kids not Chinese kids. Own up!

Nene had me rolling with laughter with her snides, lol. Cunning, she got back at the back stabbers after some faux warm moments after orphanage stuff. She enjoyed it and it was the best I had seen of her. Good job NENE! She also stood up for her Marlo buddy whether you like it or not, “the smalls” should not have been yapping away with gossip when they should have been looking at animals. It was shameful. Cynthia needs a beatdown too. Why comment on Marlo to gain acceptance from the smalls? And Phaedra makes heck of a lot of comments under her breath, etc. but avoids any and all conflict because she is weak. Too much sexual innuendo from her too, nasty.

Kandi should leave that show. Sheree’s a miserable b****. What was the point in her telling Kim that, especially since it wasn’t true. Peter said to Cynthia a few weeks ago that if they were going to Europe, Kim would go. Aint no way Kim would hold those African kids and we all know it. I dont think Kandi was “backing down,” I think she was moreso stunned that Sheree had repeated the convo (even tho she ddn’t repeat it right).

Sheree’s just mad the guy with the shells and bones told her ass she’d never marry again. If I were Sheree, I’d be mad too. Kandi gotta check her right though. Phaedra will just lay low, like she did. And the talls aint gonna come and defend her (kandi), so like we all saw, she was on her own. Even in the preview, Sheree was still going on with that lie. Kandi didn’t say that, but she did make a comment. Cynthia admitted that she said it. Sheree’s miserable, as are most of these women. If a bish was worth $30M+, just bought a mansion with ease, and handles her business, I’d be mad too Sheree.

Sheree just prove that she is a troublemaker and a miserable human being. That medicine man didn’t have to say a word because she will never have a man with her hateful self. She had to call Kim and tell her that hot mess for what reason. Who the heck is Kim anyway. She is nothing but messy and fake. I generally wish they would take her, Kim, and Marlo out the equation and keep it moving. Nene is annoying at times but she is growing, Cynthia needs to be honest and Kandi doesn’t have to explain nothing to nobody.

When you are more ghetto and self centered than Ne Ne than you are QUEEN of the GHETTO. Marlo is the new Ne Ne but worse and most unlikeable. I went to a black high school and one thing I see that is universal with black women is that you are never sure if one is REALLY your friend. They will turn on you like a pit bull. Just like these women. Talk about you as soon as you turn your back. Never changes.

The only reason Sheree brought up that comment is one of two reasons because she’s trying to stay in Kim’s good graces hoping that maybe Kim will actually set her up with one of Kroy’s teammates. Two the season is almost over and she’s trying to surround herself in as much drama as she can in hopes of being asked to do another season.
I am so tired of Marlo talking about her designer gear. The sad part is most of the designers would rather their brands not be associated with her. She thinks wearing Chanel, Gucci, or Louis Vuitton will make people look at her like she’s a socialite when it does not. She’s still a piece of trash in designer clothes. The only reason Ted Turner’s daughter and other high society organizations invite her to their functions is because they know she is desperate to fit in and will buy their overpriced stuff to do so.

Nothing but mess! Kandi didn’t say what Sheree said she said, Sheree starts trouble she is a gossiper as all the rest I find the only who doesn’t seem to run and tell things is Phadera I guess that’s the lawyer mentality. I thought Kandi had better sense but it’s either the show making her do this or she also don’t know how to keep her mouth shut. for someone who just purchased a mansion you would think she would have better sense. Cynthia I thought had more class and decorum but obviously not. The rest of them what you see is what you get. Marlo is trying to get her own show, how to steal, catch a sugar daddy, and everything you own be designer.

i hope they eventually cancel this show. it has went downhill each season. as someone born and raised georgia, these women give other women here a bad name and it doesn’t matter whether it’s black or white or whatever. usually from my experience, when people have to name drop or label drop, they are not use to having anything of value or substance. and from what i see of most of these name brands clothes, some don’t look or are worth all the money it takes to buy them. but that’s just my opinion, but some people will buy it and think they have come up in society or life. it’s one thing to have nice things but it’s another to always remind people of what you have.

I think “these women,” and I do use that term loosely are the biggest disgrace to Atlanta and all that live in the South. I have a friend right now that is American that is stuck in South Africa because when they found out he was American, there was a fee for everything. And this includes to obtain his own mother’s death certificate was South African. It was to be free but when they found out that she gave birth to him in America, oh, the fee to get the certificate for you is $1200.

These women walking around in platforms on a safari? Wished they had fallen and broken their neck. The money that they waste everyday, could used for better use than to keep up their appearances. I have stopped watching the show. They are sickening !

Kim would be just as bad as Marlo in Africa. Remember last season on tour bus-all she did was complain and make a fool out of herself. Before the baby she would have brought as many shoes as Marlo. Let’s not make Kim out to be a saint-she’s just with a nice, rather niave guy for now. I give them 2 yrs at the most. All of them looked like fools as some pt. in the trip. Give US women a bad rep.

Marlo need to find a publist or use that laywer that sent out the cease and desist letter to tell her how adults should behave after spending so much time doing wrong in life.
I wish Nene would find someone that can smooth out the rough sides of her face. It looks gross when the camera gets close even with all that make-up. I promise I thought Nene, Big Ang, Marlo were really men dressed in ladies attire.
