NBC’s “The Voice” was a huge surprise hit last spring and winner Javier Colon was buoyed by having a second chance after previous efforts to break it big had failed. (He had been with Columbia Records from 2002 to 2006.)
But when he released an album in November with Universal Republic, hardly anybody noticed, even though reviews were respectable.
“It wasn’t just Javier Colon’s high, supple, long-breathed, achingly sincere tenor that made him the winner on the premiere season of ‘The Voice’ this year. It was also his personality as a family man, earnest striver and all-around nice guy. He doesn’t break character on his new album, ‘Come Through for You,’ which is filled with advice like, “If you want to make it in love, you’ve got to be ready to give everything.” - New York Times.
“Not only does Colon sound invested in these songs — the result, surely, of having actually written them, which is another change from the pre-fabricated ‘American Idol model — he sounds thrilled to be singing them. He ‘does it well, in a smooth, expressive voice that lets his earnest, winsome personality shows through over a light reggae backbeat on opener ‘Life is Getting Better’ and the bubbly duet ‘As Long As We Got Love,’ featuring Natasha Bedingfield. She’s not the only guest: Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine, Colon’s coach on ‘The Voice,’ helps with vocals on the slinky, rhythmic ‘Stand Up.’ “ - Hartford Courant.
It debuted on the Billboard top 200 at a shockingly low 134, selling fewer than 10,000 copies its first week. (”America’s Got Talent” winner and Sinatra-esque crooner Landau Eugene Murphy Jr.’s album came out the same week and debuted at No. 34.)
His first single off the album “As Long As We Got Love” barely got any radio airplay, peaking at No. 47 on the Mediabase 24/7 Hot AC chart. (His previous song “Stitch By Stitch,” played on “The Voice,” also died on the vine.)
Colon is currently on tour for his album, coming to Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day.
“I promise there’s going to be lots of love,” Colon said.
Colon has been around long enough to know that there are no guarantees of success, even after winning a big reality program. “It’s a tough business,” he said. “It’s by no means easy. Just because I did well on the show doesn’t necessarily mean I’m set for life. There are plenty more hills to climb.”
He acknowledged that sales of the album were less than he had hoped. “I believe a majority of the people who watched me on the show had no idea my album was even out. We’re just trying to get the word out.”
Colon hopes to make a return appearance on “The Voice” at some point so they know he has a new album available.
He said in concert he will sing a couple of songs he did on “The Voice.” (His audition song was a heartfelt Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time’”). He’ll then mix in songs from his older album and current album.
Once the tour is done, he hopes to woo radio program directors and try to get airtime on stations. Though radio isn’t as influential as it used to be, it’s still an important outlet to break songs and artists, he said. “If I have to visit every radio station in America, I’m prepared to do that,” he said.
He is scheduled to show up on Monday on “Better Mornings” on CBS Atlanta.
He said the last time he came to Atlanta, he played the Apache Cafe in Midtown. You could fit maybe 200 people in there tops. Now he’ll be in a 1,000-seat venue at Variety.
“I’m very happy with the forward progress that has been made,” Colon said. “I’m in a much better position than before. It’s a matter of making the best of this opportunity and try to get the music there to the fans.”
He also hopes to nab some corporate and private party gigs, which always pay well. And with “The Voice” airing overseas, he hopes to get some traction outside the United States as well.
Colon said if “The Voice” hadn’t happened, he’d be seeking a job teaching music in a school system.

Javier is an amazing talent. I was at that Apache show, and I can’t wait to see him live again.

Seeing more activity from Voice contestants lately. Cee Lo and Vicci Martinez did a duet on Jay Leno last night — xenia has a single release out and Dia Frampton has popped-up in some of the music news recently.
Nice to see Javier doing what he wants to do and making a living at it.

Morning!
I’m not sure where to post this morning. Since the Javier Colon thread is at the top of the Idol page, I’ll check in here.
I didn’t watch the Grammy’s last night so I’ll have to look up who won but I’m already betting that Adele walked away with at least a couple.

Monday isn’t a big posting day anyway, Harriett. Did it get as cold in your neck of the woods as it did here. We were 19 degrees yesterday and 21 this morning.

Did you record the Grammy program? Jennifer was exquisite in her tribute song.

No but I’ll youtube her in a little while. I heard she was good but her voice doesn’t come close to Whitney’s in her prime. Man, that woman could sing!
They’re predicting snow in Atlanta tonight. Yuck!

Yes, we’ve missed Mercedes. No, Jennifer is no Whitney, but she was wonderful. Also, I think emotion held her back just a bit, as well. She earned high praise.
I did read on the ajc front page about your predicted snow. If it is going to be cold, I don’t mind snow, but one day is enough of it. It is beautiful, but we just don’t know how to get around in it here in the South.

I was very emotional during Glen Campbell’s part in the show. I know he’s been kind of a bad guy at times, but what a singer in his prime. And, now to know what awaits him…well, just sad. But he did well and Blake Shelton was good during his segment. He sang Campbell’s “Southern Nights.”

My God, the irony that Deirdre and JT were talking about WH just a few hours before the news came out she had died!
Gail: is the kid you’re talking about the one with the bass voice that sounds like last year’s blunder (oops, winner)? Sure don’t need another one with a voice so deep you can barely understand the words, and definitely not another country winner!
Jenny: from you post on Friday, I too really appreciate and admire Taylor Swift, the young lady. She’s not a good singer, but her songs (especially the one about being 16) are great inspiration for young girls struggling with life and boys! And she has an adorable personality, at least on her many visits to the Ellen show. I also admire the way she dresses, especially on the red carpet. Her style is so much better and lovelier than most of the established, older, huge stars! And I understand she doesn’t use a stylist, but chooses her own clothes. And I do think her voice may have improved a little bit.
N. Minaj needs to, politely put, have her butt kicked for that “performance” on the Grammies last night. What a sicko, stupid looking thing. I only lasted aboiut 40 secs, fortunately I recorded, as I had Downton Abbey to watch last night.
Kelly looked and sounded great. And love me some Sir Paul!

Gosh, I forgot to mention how great Kelly was last night. She was fabulous! I love Sir Paul, too, but his voice is not suited to the Valentine song, imo. I think he was brave to record it, though, and it is a lovely song. I just wish these stars of a certain age would stop recording albums of standards. I know it is hard to give it up, but they never sound great on them. Just me, i know.

Harriett, I love Paul as much as anyone could be loved, and have most of my life, but agree, I’m tired of the “old standards” by rock artists. I don’t like that song, and haven’t seen his performance last night yet on it, but seen the commercials, and his beautiful voice is not at all suited to it. That said, I did see the show finale, and he rocked it big time with “Carry That Weight/The End”.

Haven’t seen Walking Dead yet either although it’s on my dvr. Hubby and I (in my yearly effort to see every Oscar nominated film) saw Tree of Life last night. zzzzzzzz(although I thought Pitt’s performance was better than in Moneyball). Way too long sequences involving creation and(believe it or not) dinosaurs.

LOL@Deirdre! I did not get to catch up on Walking Dead over Christmas holidays, so guess I am going to have to get the recordings on dvd. If I had time, I could probably look all of the up and watch via my computer.
Right now, I have inherited all four seasons of Mad Men (one of my favorites) and am reviewing all in anticipation of its return on March 25.
