Atlanta R&B star Anthony David last week saw the “Soul Train” flash mob on Times Square after Don Cornelius died and Tweeted,
ATL are we doing one? RT @WFMU: Mass Soul Train Line in Times Square Planned to Honor Don Cornelius: http://bit.ly/z7iBRn
Ryan Cameron on V-103, David said, then talked about the idea on the air. Response was huge. Suddenly, David became the go-to person to organize such a “Soul Train” line.
“I was shocked nobody was doing it here,” David said.
The Grammy-nominated artist worked with promoter J. Carter, who had an existing party set for 3 p.m. Sunday at Loca Luna in Midtown.
“I want thousands out there!” he said. “It’s an American tradition. We have the parking lot and we should have plenty of space.”
David has performed on “Soul Train with India.Arie (after Cornelius had stepped down as host) and was nominated last year for a “Soul Train” award.
He was born the same year the show launched in 1971. His favorite act: Shalamar. “My dad used to laugh at the lip syncing,” he said.
He said his favorite dancing growing up was the Asian American woman named Cheryl Song. “She was hot,” he said. (That’s a favorite of Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas of TLC, too.)
David said he is no Usher when it comes to dance moves. “I’ll have my jheri curl wig on . I’ll be doing some ’80s moves,” he said. “Let people who can’t dance know I’ll be out there dancing too!”
He said all his dancer and choreography friends will show up. “People should bring their kids,” he said. “They can play hopscotch and Double Dutch.”
Here’s a classic moment from “Soul Train” circa 1970s:

I’ll give it a shot if I can dig out my platforms (yes, I still have a pair) and of course my elephant bell bottom window pane jeans (yep, the same pair I bought in 1976) and top them off with my black and yellow poca dot silk shirt…the hair is salt & peppa now so I guess I’ll have to go buy me a super afro wig!! See ya there…

Wish I could make it, but I live two hours south of ATL. Sending positive vibes, though. And I DID participate in a virtual Soul Train Line on Facebook. So, hope that counts for something! We all named the dances we were doing. Everything from the Funky Chicken to the Roger Rabbit, and then some!!!

Oh! Forgot to add, if you get a chance, please read Leonard Pitts’ tribute to Don Cornelius. He’s a columnist for the Miami Herald. It ran today in the Macon Telegraph. Leonard writes really good stuff!
