‘American Idol’ recap: season 11, audition city #4 Denver/Aspen

AMERICAN IDOL: Thousands line up at Invesco Field in Denver, CO for the chance to become the next AMERICAN IDOL on Friday, July 29. CR: Soren McCarthy / FOX The repeat last night of the Sunday San Diego episode of "Idol" did better than a "Glee" repeat originally set for that spot: nearly 10 million viewers and a 3.3 rating 18-49. All the buzz about Jim Carrey's daughter (or Bikini Girl #2) may have helped.

Aspen is a beautiful, scenic town. The talent? Not so beautiful. At least for us viewers.

Sure, we heard nine folks who made it through but I’m not sure if any of them will make it to the final 24.  (Thirty one got Hollywood tickets, the fewest so far of the four cities we’ve seen.) Nobody really impressed me though I wouldn’t mind hearing more of Jenni Schick and Devan Jones.

The producers decided to upend the formula from the first three episodes. They actually showed some really bad singers for a change. The judges for a moment almost disagreed! And the final singer was a joke, not a future top 42 contender.

Like Charleston/Savannah (89 miles apart), “Idol” is doing a two-city run. The stadium cattle call was in Denver. The judges came later and saw the finalists in Aspen, a city 100 miles away that is way too small to do a cattle call the size “Idol” does. It seems “Idol” is really focusing on great backdrops. In this case, it’s the fall colors.

Hyperactive 24-year-old music teacher Jenni Schick from Sterling, Va. hits us with her best Pat Benatar song. “Holy Schick!” Tyler said. Fortunately, she’s actually pretty good but cheesy as all get out. She appears to have spent too much time in smokey karaoke bars. She gets to kiss Steven Tyler (and according to her, that’s not cheating on her boyfriend because he’s, um, famous, like Lady Gaga and Adam Levine.)

Next: Curtis Gray, of Spring Hill, FL., gets some video love but he seems pretty normal. He does an interesting, soulful countrified version of Boyz II Men. “You’re good looking and you sing great,” J. Lo said. (Are the judges’ comments getting more reductive and boring as time goes along?)

Then a few more Hollywood-bound characters: Richie Law of Centennial, Colorado channels Scotty McCreery. Devan Jones of Aurora has a beautiful soprano. “Natural voice,” J. Lo said. Mathenee Treco, also from Centennial, is more showy than Devan and more annoying as he oversings “Hey Jude.” But he gets through anyway.

Then it’s Twin Sister Act time! Tealana Hedgespeth of Loveland, CO wants to get out of the shadow of her twin sister. But she is awful. Put her back in the shadows! Steven insults her by asking her to listen back to her singing. She doesn’t get it.

Haley Smith, a crunchy granola type born 25 years too late, works some “Tell Me Something Good.” She’s like a rawer Crystal Bowersox. “It’s not perfect for the song but I kind of like that,” Randy said. “You’re right out of my era,” Steven said. “Bet you’re even more comfortable with a guitar,” J. Lo said. Randy appreciates her knowing who she is.

Alanna Snare, a bartender/waitress who serves “Rocky Mountain oysters” or actually bull testes, is flat as the Midwest plains and tone-deaf. “I really like you as a person… singing is just not your thing. It was terrible,” Randy said.

Shelby Tweten, from Minnesota, has bipolar disorder and takes meds to treat her depression. “I’ll be shaking. I will stutter. I can’t control my body,” she said. Singing helps her. “American Idol has given us something to believe in,” she said, of her and her mom. “Bipolar doesn’t define who you are.”  Fortunately, she has a passable country voice trying “Temporary Home.” She isn’t Carrie Underwood by any stretch.

At 8:30 p.m. we get heard since day one: a montage of bad singers, including a screamer.

Jairon Jackson from Denver does an original song “So Hard,” an R&B-infused tune. Too much melisma and not that much personality or star power. But the judges like him. “Beautiful. I love it, yes,” Steven said (because he must say “beautiful” at least once per episode.)

“Idol” has yet to find the next Lady Gaga. Angie Zeiderman, 25, from Daytona Beach, Fla. wants to be that. “I’d like to open for her and be best friends with her forever,” she said. Shs has quirk written all over her but not necessarily in a good way. She is a Broadway performer but more in a va va va blech than va va va boom. J. Lo likes her. Randy is turned off. Her voice is more tolerable when she does “Blue Bayou” but her persona is still annoying. Somehow, she gets through.

Magic Cyclops from Davenport, IA seems to be channeling his worst Russell Brand imitation. This is a horrific, time-sucking act. He gave judges a choice of Neil Diamond or Jimmy Buffett. Randy chooses “Cracklin’ Rose,” then “Margaritaville.” It’s absurd. He is a plant who isn’t even in the age limit.  (This is no Larry “Pants on the Ground” Platt!) Randy walks out. Good move.

Rickster, no on the Dia/Peter connection.

ACM nominations are out: Kelly and Jason Aldean are nominated for two Single Record of the Year and Vocal Event of The Year, while Carrie is nominated for Female Vocalist.

Do a google search on “Etta James” and “The Definitive Collection” and look at the album cover.

She looks like what Rachel Crow will grow up to be!

I read The Charlotte Observer page every day (born there and have relatives there) and found this article on Kellie Pickler just now: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2012/01/26/2960569/kellie-pickler-grows-up-gets-personal.html

About to enjoy the highlight of my work week. The lovely and gracious Mrs. Rickster had to take our daughter to a doctor appointment, and have to pass almost right by my office on the way home.

So they’re going to swing by, pick me up, and we’re all going out to enjoy lunch! :-)

I read this on FoxNews.com:

Haley Smith, an 18-year old vegetarian who lives in a log cabin and works as a meat packer, impressed the judges with her unique take on Chaka Khan’s “Tell Me Something Good.”

Does anyone else find it at least a bit odd that a vegetarian works in a meat packing plant?

Rickster if I worked in a meat packing plant I probably would eat meant either. I think they mentioned she made sausage as well. That’s nasty work! Of course I still prefer any type of meat over tofu!

What I find interesting is they mention the log CABIN. It didn’t look like a cabin although it needed to be pressured washed and stained. It was a home. Yeah I have a pet peeve about it since I live in a log HOME. All 4700 square feet. Why is anything built with logs is called a cabin? Is it because of the pancake syrup? LOL

Rickster, come on! Warn us when you post a link that has a HUGE zoomed in picture of Steven Tyler kissing some girl on the lips. That’s nasty. What is wrong with these women anyway?

The vegetarian making sausage doesn’t surprise me. It is not too much different from a guy who reviews television for a living that doesn’t get to choose what is on at his house… hmm who could that be?

The problem with log cabin girl is that I think she’ll get chewed up by the bigness and grandeur of Hollywood. She was unique and talented, but also a niche singer who might have trouble finding songs on a list that she can do. Unless of course she can make the song choices she is presented with her own.

As a vegetarian, I don’t even like to touch meat. Could never ever work in a meat related business! I don’t even cook the holiday turkeys any more – just do the dressing (with veggie broth instead of chicken/turkey) and sides. Leave the nasty business to someone else.

Neg’s take on Aspen.

There were exactly zero televised auditions in Aspen that should make the Top 24. Total waste of air space. Enjoyed the Magic Cyclops the most because he was clearly a humorist doing parody and made me laugh. The Angie chick was horrifically annoying and grating, kinda like Siobhan Magnus on acid, which means she’s my pick for most likely to make it through to the live shows as Sanjaya 2.0.

RoHo writes about Jenni Shick kissing STyler, “that’s not cheating on her boyfriend, because he’s, um. famous, like lady Gaga and Adam Levine.”

Finally a piece of news and Rodney doesn’t pursue it. Who IS this famous boyfriend?

Just a short article on the audition process from EW – took one of the girls I work with to one of these and know others who have tried-out.

1. What is the pre-audition like? What must contestants do to be seen by the judges?
It’s a multi-stage process. It starts with those mass auditions where thousands of American Idol wannabes wait in line for hours, gathered usually in a large arena, and sing a brief song for a panel of Idol producers. Those who move on then sing for the show’s exec producers, and only if they make it through that stage do they sing for Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and Steven Tyler. These steps can and often do take place weeks, even months apart from the initial audition to the final audition before the judges.

I have seen situations where they tell you up-front at the pre-auditions that they are looking for the unusual, the not-so-good, the quirky or the really good and current personna. One guy I know was told that he was “really very good”, has a hard-rock voice and style, but they said he wasn’t what they were looking for – and he should try another avenue to break-into the business, but encouraged him to pursue that goal.

Mercedes, I took that to mean that Steven Tyler is famous. He along with Lady Gaga and Adam Levine were on her “free pass” list. She then said that Adam Levine, Lady Gaga and Ryan were on her boyfriend’s list. Which, um, well. Honey, I think when he’s calling you “hey, girlfriend, he’s not meaning it that way….

RE: Javier Colon cheaper tickets … I think the future major star coming from the Voice, is Xenia. As she gains more confidence and experience in the business, and covers the right new releases – she has the right combination to be more than another also-ran on a talent show.

The link should take you to a page where you can scroll down to find the latest song/video release.

Well, I enjoyed the beautiful Colorado scenery last night, but that was about it. I don’t see any of these folks making it too far… a few had OK voices, but no one really wowed me. I am getting a little bored, and am ready for the live shows to start! (Or at least Hollywood.) Is next week the last of the audition shows?

As far as what we saw… Shelby did an OK job and was rather brave to take on Carrie. Jenni’s voice wasn’t bad, but boy, was she annoying. I predict she’ll get lots of screen time in Hollywood… mostly for getting on everyone’s nerves. :-)

I am in the group who doesn’t like the bad auditions… I often skip through them. I think they were trying to create another Pants on the Ground moment – didn’t work. Pants was funny, Magic was not so much. And DanJ, I have to agree with you on Richie/Scotty. There were definitely times last year where it looked like Scotty was just phoning it in. (Although I preferred that over the cheesy faces! ;-) ) But I don’t think this season needs Scotty 2.0.

I did think the Lady Gaga wannabe did well with Blue Bayou. (Which, Sam-A, I also think of first as a Linda Ronstadt song – loved it by her! But I love the Roy Orbison version too. Just a good song all around.) But –and is this just me??– All those earrings in her lip made her difficult to watch. It looks like it hurts, and makes me cringe. The same went for the twin with the earrings hanging out of her nostrils… I was glad she wasn’t good.

So far, I don’t really have many favorites, other than Ashley from Sunday night. But I bet that when we finally get to the live shows, someone who has been invisible will show up and wow us all. Happens every year!! :-)

Jenny, I also have Ashley at the top of the heap right now. My Top 3 so far…

1. Ashley – Adorable, incredible voice, sweet personality, confidence…she could win this.
2. Phillip – Dude’s got soul to burn and can really play the guitar
3. Erika – Big voice with a ton of texture.
