TV best bets with returns of ‘30 Rock,’ ‘Undercover Boss,’ ‘One Tree Hill’

The broadcast networks are rolling out mid-season fill-in shows, old and new.

NBC brings back “30 Rock” on Thursday for season six, CBS unveils “Undercover Boss” on Sunday for a third season and the CW debuts the final (and ninth) season of “One Tree Hill” Wednesday.

On NBC, Chelsea Handler tries her hand at humor at 8:30 p.m. with “Are You There Chelsea?” based on her best-selling book, which was actually called “Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea” and also stars “That 70s Show” star Laura Prepon. Rob Schneider tries again for sitcom glory with “Rob” Thursday on CBS. And Fox Sunday turns “Napoleon Dynamite” into animation and hopes the quirky show translates into big ratings.

“The Bachelor” 8 p.m. ABC — Ben takes the first woman on a one-on-one date in his hometown.
“American Pickers” 9 p.m. History — Mike buys an elephant head from a taxidermist.
Fear Factor” 9 p.m. NBC — Contestants are bound and locked in an underwater cage and later, eat cockroaches and maggots.
The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” 9 p.m. Bravo — Kim and her new beau arrive obnoxiously late to Hawaii.
Castle” 10 p.m. ABC — A surprising revelation in an investigation may interfere with Ryan and Jenny’s wedding.
Mobster Confessions” 10 p.m. Discovery (new series) — Andrew DiDonato talks about turning in the Gambino family in this documentary series.


“The Biggest Loser” 8 p.m. NBC — Teams try to guess the percentage of weight they’ll lose to gain an advantage.
NCIS” 8 p.m. CBS — Ray Cruz returns to talk to Ziva about their possible future together.
“Celebrity Wife Swap” 9 p.m. ABC — Flavor Flav’s fiance swaps with Dee Snider’s wife.
NCIS: Los Angeles” 9 p.m. CBS — Jada Khaled is abducted during an ambush.
Shipping Wars” 9 p.m. A&E (new series) — Independent shippers carry items regular shippers won’t handle.
Wild Japan” 10 p.m. Animal Planet — A look at Japan’s coolest animals such as giant salamanders and brown bears.
Body of Proof” 10 p.m. ABC — An undercover cop is killed execution style.
Parenthood” 10 p.m. NBC — Adam receives attention from a local newspaper, leaving Crosby feeling left out.
“Tabatha Takes Over” 10 p.m. Bravo (fourth season debut) — Tabatha Coffey tries to fix a salon in Minneapolis. Later this season, three metro Atlanta establishments will be made over.


One Tree Hill” 8 p.m. the CW (ninth season debut) — Brooke adapts to family life with Julian and their new brood.
Are You There, Chelsea?” 8:30 p.m. NBC (new series) — Chelsea tries to get her life in order after getting busted for DUI.
Amazing Eats” 9 p.m. Travel (new series) — Adam Richman explores America’s favorites cuisines. Tonight: pork.
“People’s Choice Awards” 9 p.m. CBS — Kaley Cuoco hosts.
Ghost Hunters” 9 p.m. Syfy (eighth season debut)  — Ohio’s Kings Island amusement park is probed.
“Modern Family” 9 p.m. ABC — Mitch and Cam try to impress potential birth mothers.
Only in America With Larry the Cable Guy” 9 p.m. History (second season debut) — Larry travels to Alaska, home to oil, polar bears and 300 reality shows.
“American Restoration” 10 p.m. History (second season debut) — A pair of 1920s visible gas pumps and a 1930s horse-gambling wheel.
Face Off” 10 p.m. Syfy (second season debut) — The makeup artists re-imagine characters from “Wizard of Oz.”
Top Chef” 10 p.m. Bravo — It’s restaurant wars!

The Big Bang Theory” 8 p.m. CBS — Sheldon hurts Amy’s feelings and Penny gives him advice.

“17th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards” 8 p.m. VH1 — “The Artist” and “Hugo” lead with 11 nominations apiece.
The Finder” 9 p.m. Fox (new series) — An eccentric, reclusive veteran has an uncanny knack for finding people and things.
Grey’s Anatomy” 9 p.m. ABC — The doctors split into teams for a risky surgery involving conjoined twins.
“Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory” 9 p.m. HBO — The West Memphis Three, convicted of murdering elementary schoolboys, fight to overturn their sentences.

How are you not going to mention Harry’s Law? One of the best shows in a while and it doesn’t get mentioned over One Tree Hill or Larry the Cable Guy? Lame.
