The current top 3 country songs on radio nationwide are by acts with Georgia ties, led by north Georgia’s Zac Brown Band with its laid-back ditty “Keep Me In Mind.”

All nine singles the band has released have topped the Mediabase 24/7 country airplay chart at one point. On the Billboard weekly chart, “Whatever It Is” peaked at No. 2 but the other eight songs went No. 1. On top of “Keep Me In Mind,” the other seven are “Colder Weather,” “Toes,” “Chicken Fried,” “Free,” “Highway 20 Ride,” “Knee Deep” and “As She’s Walking Away.”

It’s an incredible run that no other current country act could match. In comparison, Keith Urban’s first 12 songs went top 5 on the Billboard country charts, though only seven went No. 1. Taylor Swift’s first 14 songs went top 10 though again, only five went No. 1. Ten of Sugarland’s first 11 songs went top 10 but only five went No. 1. Thirteen of Macon’s Jason Aldean’s first 14 singles went top 10, …

Marcus Canty, after being near the bottom three weeks, couldn’t survive a fourth time.

“I gave it my all. At the end of the day, that’s all you can do,” Marcus said. He is cool and very upbeat.

The R&B singer has plenty of charm, deep desire, okay dance moves and a passable voice. That formula got him to the final four but no more. He really does enjoy being on stage and though I find him a big generic, if he finds the right producers and songs, he could carve out a few hit singles. You never know…

I had predicted Chris Rene going home simply because I wasn’t all that happy with his performances last night. But he’s never been in the bottom two and has a clear fan base. I still think he came in third. Robo-host kept noting …

Howard Stern as a judge on “America’s Got Talent”

  • Cool! He will add an unpredictable element the show needs.

Howard Stern in his film “Private Parts” in 1997 made his bosses at WNBC look like morons.

Now the Sirius/XM radio host is back working with NBC as a judge on “America’s Got Talent,” replacing Piers Morgan, who wanted to focus on his CNN talk show.

“Howard Stern’s larger-than-life personality will bring a thrilling new dynamic to America’s Got Talent starting this summer,” explained NBC alternative programming head Paul Telegdy in a press release this morning. “He’s a proven innovator and his track record in broadcasting is truly remarkable. Howard is very passionate about this show and is fully committed to its future success.”

Stern’s name has been thrown around for weeks. NBC …

“American Idol” fans may have had some flashback moments with some of these songs, especially “Hallelujah.”

There were gobs of cheese, especially from Marcus Canty, who can’t help himself. Roses! Smoke! Confetti! Chris Rene was disappointing. His sincerity can only go so far. Melanie Amaro showcased her vocals to a tee while Josh Krajcik was just himself.

The top 4: 1. Melanie 2. Josh 3. Marcus 4. Chris

Who will go home? I think it will be between Marcus and Chris. I predict Chris.

Who should go home?

Chris Daughtry was known as the first successful rocker from “American Idol” five years ago.

But in this day and age, rock is not hot at all. As Daughtry told me before Star 94’s Jingle Jam, it’s about pop and dance right now.

His current single “Crawling Back to You” off his new third album is struggling on top 40 radio but is a top 10 hit on what’s dubbed “Hot AC.’ That’s pop geared to a slightly older audience than traditional top 40 and where Daughtry has thrived with distinctively anthemic mid-tempo rock hits ranging from “September” to “Over You.”

At last month’s American Music Awards, Daughtry was the only genuine rock act on the bill. (”How about OneRepublic?” his guitarist Brian Craddock asked. I grimaced. He grinned.) The Grammy Nomination concert earlier this month featured none.

Chris figures the rock trough right now is cyclical and it will turn around. …

Retired Col. Oliver North will hit the stage as a host of Sean Hannity’s “Salute to the Troops” holiday concert series, which comes to Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre Sunday. But he won’t be singing or telling jokes. That’s left to the likes of Christian recording star Michael W. Smith and Alpharetta comedian Jeff Foxworthy.

Also billed as a special guest is Herman Cain, the McDonough businessman who earlier this month ended his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

“I am not so much an entertainer as a documentarian,” North said in a phone interview, taking a break from finishing an episode of “War Stories” for Fox News, Hannity’s broadcast home. “I’ll be on stage 15 minutes, tops, introducing military heroes and scholarship recipients.”

A portion of the proceeds from the three-city concert tour will go to the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund, which dispenses college tuition money to hundreds of children of dead and …

A mere 48 hours after the last very special episode of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” featuring Kim Zolciak’s baby delivery, Bravo is carting out yet another new episode on a Tuesday night.

For the first time this season, Sheree Whitfield receives the primary story line this week thanks to a court case with her ex-husband Bob Whitfield.

The way the show is editing it, Bob appears to be doing everything he can to avoid paying child support for their kids. Or perhaps he really can’t. It’s hard to tell. He served Sheree with papers saying he’d like to reduce his child support because his income is greatly reduced.

The two end up going to Fulton County civil court. Phaedra Parks is representing Sheree. Phaedra is aware that Sheree didn’t fully pay two previous divorce attorneys, who both sued her to the tune of $180,000 plus combined. One of the firms even seized her …

Federal government regulating loud commercials

  • It’s about time! What an annoyance!
  • Does the government really need to get involved with something as trivial as this? Use your remote!

You know how some commercials are irritatingly louder than the program you’ve been watching? That’s supposed to be a thing of the past by the end of 2012.

Rules that require broadcasters to keep commercials at comparable volume to programming sailed through the Federal Communications Commission Tuesday, 4-0.

While TV commercials are a necessary evil — helping to pay for the programming people receive on most networks — many viewers find loud commercials a major annoyance.

“This is an issue that people care about, that consumers care about,” FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said before the vote to Bloomberg News. “We have received thousands of complaints about TV commercials that come on much louder than the programming around …

Marcus Canty considered quitting; Daughtry at Star 94’s Jingle Jam tonight

Marcus Canty was so upset by what happened last week with Rachel Crow, he considered quitting, the New York Post said.

But naturally, he didn’t. He has been in the bottom two three weeks in a row and has survived.

This week’s elimination will be purely by America’s vote. No more “singing for your life” competitions, much to the relief I’m sure of Nicole Scherzinger.

In other “Idol”/”X Factor” related news:

- I’ll be talking to Chris Daughtry for the first time tonight. It’s been five years since he was on “Idol” and has carved out an impressive career, headlining tonight’s Star 94 Jingle Jam.

- Javier Colon, winner of “The Voice,” is going to be in town Thursday at the Variety Playhouse. You can get tickets here.
