CNN ratings in 2011 show improvement; Fox remains the leader

fox-news-logoFor each of the three major news networks in 2011, there was good news and bad news, depending on how you spin it.

Fox News could take comfort that it remains the dominant ratings leader, drawing more viewers than CNN and MSNBC combined both during the entire day and prime time. It averaged 1.1 million total day and 1.9 million viewers each night. Its top 11 shows all exceeded 1 million viewers each, a figure no CNN or MSNBC program achieved.  It has remained the news leader for the past decade.

Ratings, however, were down about 8 percent year over year and 14 percent in the 25 to 54 year old demographic during prime time and 5 percent overall. (Its 2010 numbers were boosted by the mid-term elections and will likely go up again during the 2012 presidential election year.)

It lost viewers at the 5 p.m. hour, where “The Five” replaced Glenn Beck mid year but the network said advertisers are more welcoming to the new show than Beck.

Atlanta-based CNN bounced back from a dismal 2010 and gained 17 percent in total viewers and an impressive 29 percent among 25 to 54 year olds, fueled by big international news stories such as the Arab Spring, the Japanese earthquake and Osama bin Laden’s death. At night, CNN is still third behind MSNBC, which won the 25-to-54 demo race for a third year in a row, but edged back to second total day.

At 9 p.m., CNN brought in Piers Morgan, who improved upon Larry King’s last-year numbers, and moved Anderson Cooper to 8 p.m. (with a repeat at 10 p.m.) after a short-lived effort with Eliot Spitzer.  CNN also added Erin Burnett in the fall at 7 p.m.. And in 2012, Soledad O’Brien returns to mornings, where CNN lags behind “Morning Joe” on MSNBC as well as “Fox and Friends.”

But outside of 2010, CNN’s 2011 performance was still its second worst in 15 years, according to data collected by tvbythenumbers.com.  During primetime, the network averaged 689,000 viewers, up from 590,000 in 2010 but way behind the 1.3 million in 2008.

Despite losing Keith Olbermann, MSNBC survived in prime time, gaining two percent year over year and averaging 775,000 viewers a night, though it was down 11 percent in Olbermann’s spot.

Atlanta-based HLN’s numbers were up 20 percent, boosted heavily by Casey Anthony coverage. Interestingly, Nancy Grace’s overall raitngs were up 7 percent but among 25 to 54 year olds, it actually dropped 19 percent, according to data collected by TVNewser.

Really Leggs? Our service starts like 11:00ish and usually ends right past midnight. Years ago when all the old folks was alive they started like 9:00ish. As kids we’d think WTH? What we gonna do all that time…lol But hey we were kids and “drug” to church…lol No complaints or regrets though. :)

2. celisea, looking for something chill to do? email me. if you have plans … enjoy!!

3. unattractive babes just get an “awwwww” from me. no further comment coz i never know what else to say. and speaking of babes, beyonce is supposedly in labor as we speak. but you guys probably covered that earlier. *shrugs*

Yep, never done the midnight service, not even as a little girl when we were “drugged” to church. Sacred Heart (loved that church).

Blackfoote – Got mine the 2nd week of December.

Leggs – Ya’ll know folks clown in crowds. I spent some years “hanging” out and not doing Midnight Service, but I’m a chicken, a paranoid chicken at that. Always felt like I didn’t want to catch a stray bullet being in the wrong place. So I’ve shucked off hard partying pretty much (for NYEs) all ma life….lol

leggs, i first made green bean casserole for my kids about 15 years ago and have since grown SICK of it. but i have to make it on at least one annual holiday just to appease thing 1. i think it has become her comfort food.

random: vendor delivered a huge box of assorted chocolates. we attacked the nut clusters and caramels. all them creme-this and fruit-that are gonna end up straight in the trash. shame.

I have Word Fued…I’m sure it’s about the same. Rquest a random player or someone specific. Aside from this lady, the folks I’ve played with, if you land a word say worth 30 plus points, they don’t come back for a day or so. Orrrrr, playing with folks that do words like “her, it, bus, house, shoe” after a couple of those I decline.

It’s like that sometimes, SC. I usually have multiple games going, and I’ll have all consonants in one game, and all vowels in the other. Sometimes it’s worth missing a turn to swap tiles.

And you learn really quickly that it’s all about the strategy. Sometimes, you can make a great 5 or 6 letter word and get 7 points, and your opponent will play a 2-letter word and get 33 points. It’s all in the tile placement.

Strategy is key…tw and tl points will rack points, oh and creating words on top of words…getting credit for the word you’re building and the one you created adding to what’s already there.

i cannot tell you how aggravating it is that s/o will usually beat me two games out of three by using said “see jane run” words strategically placed for max pointage.

*Lord, please forgive me for the unkind thoughts i had while standing at the register at kroger a short while ago. you know, because the cashier sent the ’special-needs’ bagger to get a price on that ham i wanted to get for NYE, and after 15 minutes waiting i just said “never mind” and left. i know you know what i was thinking so, i’m sorry.*
