Q&A with Amy Schumer, at the Punchline New Year’s Eve
I tried to set up a phone interview with the esteemed Amy Schumer, a very funny stand-up who finished fourth on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” in 2007 and killed during the Comedy Central roast of Charlie Sheen earlier this year. But we couldn’t work out a time. So I had to settle for a quick email Q&A to promote her two shows Friday and three shows New Year’s Eve at the Punchline. (You can get tickets here.)
Here it is:
Q: I was born in Rockville Centre, where you grew up, but never lived there.(I’m Oyster Bay High School graduate, Class of 1987). Did you luck out by actually getting to grow up there?
Schumer: No. Long Island is a dump.
Q; On the William Esper Studio Alumni website, your name is not included – yet. Where’s the respect?
Schumer: I have two movies this year. A pilot at CBS and Comedy Central. Maybe I blue balled the person who updates the site or maybe they still just think of me as a comic. Either way. It’s cool.
Q: It has now been more than four years since you did “Last Comic Standing.” In retrospect, what was the greatest benefit of doing that show?
Schumer: The tour that followed. It was comedy boot camp. I bombed in 42 cities across our great country. All my worst fears about performing came true. So by the end, I was fearless.
Q: Was there any downside?
Schumer: I probably gained weight. A four-month tour will do that to you.
Q: Who invited you to be on the Charlie Sheen roast?
Schumer: Comedy Central
Q: Did you know Sheen before the roast?
Schumer: Nope. I met him the night before. He had a party for all the roasters. I like him
Q: Your style of humor seemed to work well on a roast. What was your favorite joke you did?
Schumer: The one in said off the cuff. When Mike Tyson was heckling me with that crazy speech impediment I asked “Is his interpreter here?”
Q: Have you seen Steve-O since the roast? [She made a joke about his late friend Ryan Dunn, who got drunk and killed himself in a car accident: “I truly am — no joke — sorry for the loss of your friend Ryan Dunn. I know you must have been thinking it could’ve been me. And I know we were all thinking, 'Why wasn’t it?' ”] Do you think he was really that upset with what you said or was that all blown out of proportion?
Schumer: I have not seen him. I didn’t think it would upset him. The editor chose to cut to him looking really sad. Maybe he was. That wasn’t my intention.
Q: Is doing a New Year’s show any different from doing a show on any other day in your mind?
Schumer: Yes. New Year’s shows have a higher intensity. There’s a real sense of occasion and the energy is amazing. I love performing on NYE. It will be a great time.
Q: Louis C.K. is getting a lot of love lately. What’s your take on his $5 online concert sale that generated more than $1 million in sales? And what do you think of his show “Louie”?
Schumer: I think it’s great. And I think it’s great.
Q: Do you have any Atlanta connections?
Schumer: Not yet
Q: What’s the most annoying question reporters ask you?
Schumer: Is it harder being a girl?
Q: What is the most annoying question I’ve asked you so far? (Perhaps they are one and the same!).

I saw a documentary on the Varsity about 3 or 4 years ago. They sell 17,000 hotdogs on a normal week and about 50,000 if there’s a Tech event. That’s just hotdogs alone. That does not include burgers, fries, FOs….and the other good stuff

Did anybody hear Bert this morning? The call he made to a friend where he wanted to confess and come clean about a potential lie? He and the friend hung out I guess some years or a year or so ago and the friend had to leave when his allowance ran out and to not tick his wife off…I think around 11:30ish. Well Bert vowed to never invite him again but I guess in a recent convo, they talked about hanging out again….some event forthcoming. Well Bert called to tell him he’s not invited this time. They’re going to hit a stip club. That was waaaay too funny. Of course by the end of the conversation they’d worked something out but dude was like seriously afraid of ticking his wife off. He was NOT trying to go past his curfew or spend too much money. Bert told him he would carry the tab but buddy still wasn’t too brash in committing to hanging out all night.

Even with the joking and for the forthcoming event, Bert was like okay I’ll pick up the tab, he was not going to say the wrong thing. Of course he did say he didn’t remember leaving at 11:30 for that reason. He said he thought the evening just ended. But you can tell he wasn’t sure if his wife was listening….like today. I would have been okay with him hanging out with “like” friends doing that given this is something that they do every blue moon. A sort of get together with the guys/fellas. I didn’t really have a curfew. I knew though not to roll up in my mama’s house at any ole hour. She didn’t play that. She said let the clock dictate the time…lol I do remember only once, leaving about 12/1:00 ish going to this place on Piedmont that stayed open 24 hours and served the best Margheritas and getting home like 4:00 ish….yikes! My mama was waiting on me at the top of the stairway and said it’s time for you to get your own place. She was talking like right then….lol

Or the show where this chick called in because her boyfriend told her he was 30 and I think he was like 28 or something like that. Well he lied because she had a HARDLINE rule of not dating anyone younger than her…he was like a year younger…something like that. But even with that small difference, she wouldn’t bend on her rule so he lied. Not only did he lie but he perpetuated and carried the lie to yondersville. Well aside from that she couldnt really tell anything mean he’d done or any areas where he’d lacked as a boyfriend. They’d been together for a good while by this time. Oh boy, the women that called in was like girl please he lied because you wouldn’t bend on your hardline rule but he didn’t want to walk away from what he thought could be something. They asked her too if she knew his age would she have given him a chance and she said no. The women that called was like be glad you got a man and one that cares. One that’s not cheating, playing games, the whole nine. She was melting by the end of that segment.

I like them because they seem to have a good ethnic balance. They had “ask the black folks” day the other day….of course it wasn’t named that. I got in the car late and missed most of it but they had white (and others) folks calling in to ask the black panel “whatever” type questions. I like the fact that the black panel was very frank, kept it real but keep it from the streets the curbs and the back alleys.

LOL@BF. Actually, that’s kinda what happened. She met him in a bar while she was in Greenville, and so she was calling him “Greenville” and he was calling her “Hotlanta.” The rest of the weekend was more of the same, with other nicknames like “Pumpkin Butter” thrown in. Only when she left, he yelled, “Bye, Nicole” and all she could do was yell, “Bye!”

First off all necks snapping and rolling and folks getting out of their chairs that was within ear shot. Folks standing in huddles on the aisles as the news passed around. Folks cornered her and told her she was trying to be funny, that it was offensive. The girl she asked was one that no doubt did her hair at home. I know she had two kids and was divorced and I know didn’t have a lot of extras so some things she did herself. Most knew this. Had that not been a factor, the fact that her hair really was nappy (I don’t mean that in a mean way) it might not have gone over as bad as it did.
It wasn’t funny then but I’m giggling a bit now. She was scared as heck…lol

@SCool: I’ve never noticed a difference in how folks smell either. I will say, though, that I can tell when someone (ANYONE) has been outdoors. I usually say (or think to myself, since people sometimes look at me funny if I say it outloud) “You smell like outside.” It’s a good smell to me – smells like fresh air.

ITL…I actually ended up in November with 3 weeks left so I took a week in Nov, 2nd week in Dec and last week. I’m covering for a coworker this week that covered for me those two weeks. She and I typically cover for each other but she already had this week down.

We’re getting ready to do a major remodel in our building, too, Cel. Not to be a Negative Nancy, but I hope there’s not too much glass….there are some folks with a face made for sheetrock, if you know what I mean.

Only thing is I have a bad habit of going to the restroom without my card to get back in…that’s a scary thing when you’re the only one here. You have to go the security console to get back in. Usually I do it (when my badge is not attached) and NEVER think about it until I’ve walked out and the door has closed behind me.

That’s how I always feel when I worked the last week of the month. This is the first time I’ve taken 2 weeks off and I’m enjoying lounging, eating, hair standing on top of my head, mix matched socks on, rip in my tank top, etc. Just comfy.

ITL – LOLOLOL I know right.
I actually like the glass…glass offices glass conference rooms. Only thing is I have new digs with the removal of butthead no longer working with me and where I am now I only have one set of quad offices to my left so it’s like light bright to my right. Where I was sitting I had a set to my left and right and that sort of dimmed all the “brightness”….I just noticed that today. I’m light whoa…it’s too bright on this side.

Speaking of going to the bathroom. Two random thoughts.
1) I used to not go into the handicapped stall in my areas bathroom because….well, I’m not handicapped. But then, I realized that no one else in our section is either. So, I now go to the handicapped stall that is the size of the half bathroom on the main level of my house.
2) We must have someone new in our area who is a squatter. (Read – does not sit on public toilet seats) How do I know? Because for the last week or so, I have gone into the bathroom to find pss on the seats. And I think to myself, “Ya’ nasty witch. The least you could do is wipe up after ya’ nasty tail.”

I’m a squatter EVERYWHERE (church,my mom’s, restaurants) but home. But I dare not leave teetee (that’s what my mom made us say growing up) on the seat. Heck you can aim and get it in there. I’ll wrap the seat still and place tissue because I don’t want nothing splashing on me.

I ain’t gonna lie, sometimes I want to go the men’s restroom because ours get pretty filthy sometimes. Why? Just don’t understand. Sometimes the admin will call for them to clean the restroom in the middle of the day.

Yeah…the thing is that all of the toilets are automatic. However, if your butt doesn’t “clear the laser field”, the toilet won’t flush. (lol)
So, I always make sure move to the right of the stall to make activate the flush.
