David Archuleta taking two-year Mormon mission

10084836-large

David Archuleta, season 8 runner up on “Idol,” announced Monday that he will be taking a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Deseret News reported that he doesn’t plan to quit music.

“It’s not because someone told me that I’m supposed to do it, and not because I no longer want to do music, but because it’s the feeling that I’ve felt I need to do this with my life,” he told a concert crowd in Salt Lake City.

The mission will begin next year but he didn’t specify where. Here’s the announcement:

- The Daily Mirror is already spreading rumors that “X Factor” host Steve Jones is out. “X Factor” is denying it. We’ll know the truth soon enough. Rumors are that Nicole Scherzinger would be the host, as her original role was supposed to be. I’m not even sure she’d be terribly good at that role either. Then again, I’ve never been a fan.

- Appearances on the “X Factor” final include Justin Bieber, Ne-Yo and Pitbull and Leona Lewis. On Wednesday’s show, Josh Krajcik will go first, followed by Chris Rene, then Melanie Amaro.

- Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson took part in the VH1 Divas Concert aired last night. Here are some videos.

The opener with Mary J. Blige and includes “Spotlight” and “Since U Been Gone”:

Hudson with Jessie J on “Knock on Wood”

Kelly Clarkson returns to her “Idol” roots with “Chain of Fools” along with Ledisi:

Kelly Clarkson offers up “What Doesn’t Kill You”:

And Jennifer Hudson does “Night of Your Life.”

Re Archie’s announcement…that sure sounded like a “goodbye” to me.

Good for him. Since he already achieved being “bigger than the Beatles” he might as well follow the calling.

Nicole > Steve Jones. Of course that isn’t saying much. Paint Drying > Steve Jones. Keep denying it Steve, but get that resume ready.

Deirdre- thanks for the preview of this thread in the last thread. You have that uncanny ability to know what Mr. Ho is going to give us next. Great minds?????

Branch…most of the time I’m just trying to help Rodney with the fact that he can’t cater to our every whim anymore…sometimes I step on his toes in the process.

Re the anti-Seacrest….I find it hard to believe that the powers that be would make his firing public before the last week of the season. I think the Daily Mirror is making a pretty good guess as to what will happen rather than that which already has happened. Nicole would be better, if not great. At least she has a personality that doesn’t come across as “big, dumb lug”.

The Daily Mirror doesn’t make guesses, if the truth can be found by hacking, they will find it. From what I know of Steve Jones, the password on his voice mail is probably 1, 2, 3, 4.

I think Nicole would make a decent host. Much better than Steve Jones! As for judges I hope they get a singer/songwriter. Someone who understands what the contestants are going through. Honestly Paula has been the best judge this year IMO. I loved her defending Josh to LA Reid last week. Only thing missing was her throwing her drink in his lap.

Read the Daily Mail piece and almost feel sorry for ol’ Steve. He’s s “devastated” at the prospect of leaving L.A. Living there is “a dream come true. he loves the weather and he lives working on X Factor – it’s just a shame that the US public has not warmed to him.”

Apparently he had to ditch his native speech pattern for a more American accent – not for the better, that.

Mercedes, Steve has no warmth, in fact he’s stiff and cold on air. Sort of hard to warm up to him. He can still live in LA although he might end up being a weather man. He could always become an actor. He’d make a good corpse on CSI or a zombie on the Walking Dead. As long as words don’t come out of his mouth.

Nope! He’d have to move to Atlanta if he wanted to be a zombie on the Walking Dead. Maybe True Blood would take him….I heard that they’re thinking about a zombie story.

I see that Melanie is suppossed to get the best/closing spot on the Wed. nite show. It’s all in the cards, according to the “draw”, they say.

Seen a survey that shows Mel & Josh deadlocked at 44% popularity points — but then, that was a pretty small sampling. If Josh doesn’t win, at least he can get his own Burrito Shop and we can all get something to eat.

Chis sez that this is not a singing competition, and he is the only one that has the “X-Factor”.(but no one suspects that LA Reid has it.) I hear that LA’s homie Justin B. will be performing, along with Leona Lewis on the Coronation show on Thursday.

Hi Seth, I did see the singing order. Don’t know how much that will factor in, but Josh did have the pimp spot last week and stole the show. I wonder if Justin will sing a duet (Baby) with Drew? Any word…spoilers on the song choices? I’d love to hear Josh sing Georgia On My Mind. Geez I’m actually starting to get pumped for the final.

Deirdre he’d(Steve Jones) would make a good zombie on True Blood. Heck they got vampires, shapeshifters and werewolves so a zombie or two would fit right in.

I checked a couple of sites and they report Drew WILL sing with Justin Thursday. Also the single released by the winning although its still a rumor is the song by Pink: Bridge of Light. I read all 3 (Chris, Melanie & Josh) recorded THEIR version of the song. Here’s the version by Pink.

Rodney, it is not called a Mormon Mission Tour. That makes it sound like he will tour the missions around the world performing. It is simply referred to as “serving a full time or two-year mission”. To give a little more info, he does not get to choose where he will serve and he will pay his own way.
I am so happy for him and proud of him.

Thanks for the link Dan.

I’ve always wondered if Steve Jones was programmed and battery-operated.

That will be a great gig for Drew if she sings with “The Beeber”, but then, she is one of Simon’s projects.

Looks to me like the quest to get an artist or two to lay-claim to a major influence in the Billboard Top 40 is getting tougher every year – with the Glee albums, new albums by Dia Frampton, Javier Colon, from the Voice, the great many well-established names in Pop, Country, R&B, Folk-Rock, the next wave of artists doing albums from the UK, the soon coming new Idol, Voice and regional talent shows offering recording contracts, etc. (There’s a contest out of Tampa starting that offers a $400,000 recording contract next year)

The fame from the show is short-lived if they don’t get a couple big hits within that first year.

Morning, all!

Gee, where are all the Archiemaniacs proclaiming their dismay over the fact that “the greatest singer ever” is hanging it up for the time being. Wasn’t he supposed to be the “biggest selling Idol contestant ever”, too?? (And does anyone believe he can make any kind of real comeback later??)

Do you think his decision might have anything to do with the fact that his record label recently dropped him?

This sounds like a great story for 60 Minutes. …Okay, maybe not!

Like so many contestants on the various singing competition shows David Archuleta couldn’t convert his show experience into stardom. Like Taylor Hicks, Bo Bice, Diana DeGarmo etc he(David) fell by the wayside. He can make a living in the business but he’ll never be a star.

He is a nice guy with a nice voice but is nothing special. There’s nothing about him that makes me want to see him in concert. In that regard he doesn’t have it…the XFactor. I do respect him for his religious conviction and wanting to do mission work. Honestly I think Archie was pushed into doing Idol by his Stage-father who by several accounts was an A-hole while Archie was on Idol. My two cents anyway!

DanJ, including Diana DiGarmo wasn’t quite right – she’s having quite a great career. Has been in several Broadway plays, on a soap opera (I know – big whoopee, but it is television) – she’s done quite well for herself.

On the other hand, I’m having a hard time imagining just who will actually even notice that David A has “disappeared” for 2 years. The announcement seems like a publicity ploy, “look at me – how good and special I am”. He has no career to speak of now, what in the world could he realistically expect in 2 years?

Good Morning, even if it rains! Good for grass seed.

D., I saw the Dragon Tattoo and don’t agree with praise for Rooney Mara. She comes off as kid playing dress-up. Noomi Rapace was all woman coming to terms with horrible past – and not always succeeding. Remember the end of the first movie (and book), where Salander has a chance of savingthe bad guy from his accident? She chooses not to, and this choice – standing by watching a man die – is what makes Michael drop her as love interest. In new movie there is no choice – fate intervenes and kills the man.

If in fact that Steve Jones character is out, it will be a dramatic improvement. He is incredibly blow-dried, processed and his whole act is contrived. He’s trying too hard to be Seacrest and it shows.

Also, the new “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” has sugarcoated the two nasty rape scenes. They are shorter and less violent than in the original movie.
Plus, the ending changed!
Daniel Craig terrific as new hero, though. And film caught the gloominess of a Swedish winter up north.

Thanks for the young Archie link Harriett!

Sam-A, I included Diana because her CD sold poorly and she was dropped from her recording contract and she never to my knowledge had a top twenty hit. Acting may serve her well and I wish her the best but as a recording star she was a major bust given the fact she finished 2nd on Idol and had millions of potential fans to draw from. She may very well win a Tony someday but I don’t think she’ll ever win a Grammy or get that chance again.

Diana, Jasmine Trias and the Archie’s of Idol fame may have seen their recording careers over before they were/are old enough to buy a drink.

To correct the record Diana did have a hit with the single I Believe but her CD sold under two hundred-thousand copies She then asked out of her contract and to my knowledge wasn’t signed by another record company to my knowledge.

Mercedes: Thanks. I’ve said before I have little to no intention of seeing the new “Girl with…..” – why fool with perfection! And because the US can be so “puritanical” I was very sure the rape scenes would be way watered down. The REAL movie was so gritty and realistic, I felt like I was in the room watching the whole horrible act, not sitting in a theater watching a movie, which I’m sure is the experience the new version offers.

And Rooney Mara is a society gal from a very wealthy family – just how gritty could she be expected to be. Noomi Repace was fantastic – I’m so very sad she and the film were not eligible for Oscar consideration – one of the best performances ever for me. Certainly one I won’t forget.

DanJ – true, Diana hasn’t had a recording career, but happy she’s doing so well in show business.

Deirdre: you seem to be keeping busy with the family – not too much from you. Where is Nana lately – I live vicariously thru her descriptions of all the fantastic food she’s cooking – it’s been a long time and I’m “hungry” to hear her Christmas menu!

Sam, Deirdre is not here, but I can tell you that Nana has been up to her eyeballs in family, baking over 400 cookies with grands and great-grands, visiting with her dad and his new wife (they are at her house now). She actually had photos of all the cookie baking and finished product. I have not heard her menu items yet, but suspect they will be plentiful and wonderful. Guess she is just too busy to post here. I will jog her a bit and tell her you want to know what’s cooking!

Does anyone know why American Idol has never released a dvd seasonal set? Just about every show releases their previous year on dvd and now blue-ray just before the start of their new season. I would love to buy them. I have the best and worst of Idol seasons 1-4 that was released as well as The Search For A Superstar. I can’t think of any reason they wouldn’t want to release them. Just curious.

Peeking in: Mercedes you are the first critic I’ve read who doesn’t think the attack on Lisbeth is horrifyingly uncomfortable to watch. Also, having read the book, my one big objection to Noomi was that she did not match the waif-like description of Lisbeth. Noomi looks like she could take on all comers to me and Rooney doesn’t. I am looking forward to seeing this film…love Daniel Craig and already believe he is perfect for the role and Christopher Plummer has really come into his own as an actor.

As far as her being a “society girl”…it’s called acting! And I’ve heard that grittiness is not a problem for her version of the character.

We just went out and bought a kiddie corral to maintain Lucas’ safety in the house…we’re all getting tired of chasing him from one room to the next. He’s now happily and safely playing with his toys!

Mercedes S, unless there’s a legal reason which I doubt since they released the ones I mentioned I can’t understand it. I just watched Kelly’s Natural Woman, Without You and A Moment Like This from the making of a Superstar. My God she was great and seemed so happy. Christina Christian and Tamara?sp Gray were also very good.

It’s interesting looking back to season 1. The stage was small compared to now but it seemed to make the show intimate and personal. I really like seeing it. Simon even had spiked hair. Funny! My point is we forget so much from the early seasons and having the season on dvd would be nice.

Hey y’all!

I am so ready for the X Factor to be over! I’m honestly not sure who’ll win, but at this point, I’m going with Chris Rene. Not because he’s the most talented (clearly), but because he’s got the back story and charm going for him. Is that what the “x factor” is supposed to be? Because they clearly told us last week, “it’s not about the singing…”

Love when Kelly goes soul…and I have to give her credit for walking around in those heels with a sprained ankle. Yikes.

Re: Dragon Tattoo. I am looking forward to seeing it. Tho, I’ve read all the books and saw the Swedish films. I’m not surprised that the “rape” scenes have been watered down for American consumption, I was actually expecting it. In all honesty, they were quite uncomfortable to watch…which was the point. Mercedes, I’m intrigued about this “changing the ending” comment.

DanJ, that’s a good question. Even if they only did a Best and Worse compilation, or something to celebrate the 10 year anniversary, that could be fun. But I suppose maybe they’re afraid of turning off the casual fan to purchasing the Idols music. And most of the time, the videos end up on youtube.

Hey Everyone!!!!!!

Just a quick “Hello” and hope all of you are doing well. I have been extra busy the last several weeks with great grandkids and grandkids . Not to mention talking care of my beloved precious Memory. Those who know the story about her will understand when I tell you what is going on with her. Two weeks ago, she woke me up around 5:00 in the morning whinning and when I checked on her, I found that she was unable to move her hind quarters, as paralyis has set in, The vet is 90% sure that Memory will not regain the use of her hind legs. She is also battling an on going urinary tract infection, so I have been spent alot of time at the vet’s, and taking care of her.

For Sam-A: I have already baked 14 pies with two more to do today, I have 5 cakes ready to be frosted (German Choc; Strawberry; Coconut; Carrot and Hummingbird). I will finish them Thursday, plus I have a 22 pound ham ready to bake, cornbread dressing mixed and ready to be baked and have already cooked and frozen 12 pounds of collards. All of the afore mentioned does not include other food preparation!!!!! Sometimes, I feel there should be more than one of me. I’m expecting around 30, people for dinner Christmas evening, plus around 8 Christmas Eve. I WILL get everything done in time, as I always do. Thank goodness all my Christmas shopping was done by Thanksgiving.

I will try to check back in later before Christmas, but if I can’t, I want to wish everyone a Very Blessed Holiday Season and a Very Merry CHRISTMAS to all.
