DeMarco Morgan joins Brenda Wood at anchor desk at 11 Alive at 6 p.m.

demarco+newVeteran 11 Alive anchor Brenda Wood, flying solo as an anchor at 6 p.m. the past few months since Ted Hall moved to mornings, has been given a new co-anchor from New York City: DeMarco Morgan.

Morgan starts at the NBC affiliate January 2.

Hall replaced retired Jill Becker in the mornings so Morgan is not displacing anybody.

Morgan will co anchor the 6 p.m. with Wood and do reporting for the 11 p.m. news.

He worked as a weekend anchor and reporter at WNBC in New York City since 2008. There, he occasionally got to sub in for anchor Chuck Scarborough, a legendary anchor at that station going back to 1974, a longer run than Monica Pearson. Morgan’s  previous stints were in Miami, Milwaukee and Jackson, Miss.

“I’m excited,” Morgan said in an interview Tuesday afternoon. “This is an opportunity to anchor during the week. This is a chance to work with Brenda. She’s a legend. I can learn from her. And I love the South. I went to school in the South.”

He said he could have stayed in New York, the No. 1 market, if this decision was driven by pure ego. But he feels he can grow at WXIA-TV. “New York has been good to me,” he said. “They wanted me to stay. It’s always good to leave on your own terms.”

As a single guy, he said he’s also looking to settle down and find a “Southern belle” of his own. And he’s looking forward to some good ol’ soul food. “I’m praying I don’t get too big,” he said.

“DeMarco is a tenacious and aggressive reporter and an engaging and effective news anchor that makes it his mission to be involved with the community he serves,” said Ellen Crooke, 11Alive’s Vice President of News and Information, in a press release.

In his WNBC bio, he provides this motto from an African Proverb: “Care more than others think is wise. Risk more than others think is safe. Dream more than others think is practical. And expect more than others think is possible.”

I thought Hullinger was taking the anchor chair when Ted moved out. How does he fit in now?

Can’t imagine why Ted Hall isn’t on the 11PM broadcast anymore. He was a MUCH needed breath of fresh air.Incredible anchor. I would have considered Brenda for the Morning gig.Nothing against Brenda but you have to mix it up every few years

Two African American anchors on the 6pm? Very risky!!! There are still a lot of white folks in Atlanta that may not like that set up. I left 11Alive due to the loss of Paul Ossmann and Jim Basile, and Ted going to 6am. Channel 2 Action News has a much better product and their weather team is just incredible and that is where I am staying.

Not surprised at this move at all. Isn’t the ATL an “URBAN” town. 11 Alive is catering to the”Urban crowd” They know what butters their biscuits in this town…

hopefully this guy’s better than the fill-ins from WATL. Honestly with all the WXIA changes, I rarely watch anymore. Tired of trying to keep up.

You idiots! How is this about race. Geez, everything is not about race. Its about getting out there and covering the news and keeping people like you inform. Get a grip please!

I haven’t watched 11 Alive ever since they took a WIZ. Moved to WSB. Not really happy with them either. Local TV news in the ATL just plain stinks. Watch WSB for 15 minutes in the morning and you’ve seen all their morning news – it’s like a tape loop. Plus WSB has no morning sports? Most of the time I have to go to the net or the paper to find out who won a Braves, Hawks, or Falcons game. Not a huge sports fan, but I like to know if the home teams are winning or losing. 11 Alive is too “happy” and even more “newstainment” focused. When I watch news, I want news, not entertainment.

DeMarco Morgan, welcome to the city too busy to hate. African Proverbs or not, this city will eat you alive due to hypocrisy (See Exhibit-A). Just keeping it real, you are a winner before you arrived here but make sure you have a backup plan to leave; otherwise you have less than 6 months to prove yourself. Best wishes!

@Miss Her. From what I can tell, a year later, Suchita is not working in TV news anywhere. Would love to talk to her about it but she hasn’t submitted to any interviews to anybody since her departure.

What is the differnece between having 2 white anchors (which we have had plenty of) than 2 black anchors??? It’s news, not a racial thing…get a grip!

As a journalist…..you have to understand the dynamics here. Yes both anchors are considered African American, but clearly they are both bi-racial, so ch 11 is getting the best of both races. Furthermore….it will always be about “RACE” in the dirty south. That’s why it’s called that!!!!!

Welcome to Atlanta DeMarco. You and Brenda will be an outstanding duo. Ignore the haters and the ones who think you two are “uppity”. Your bio speaks for itself and “we” are so proud!!!

WHAT THE ???

Ok, let me make sure I understand this correctly. It is ok to bring up race if you are black and have a problem with it, but not ok if you are white and make a comment? If you do you are a racist. I am not a racist, but I really am tired of this double standard. I understand in the past blacks have not been treated as equals. However, I don’t think that it is fair to continue to use the race card all the frigging time. Put the cards away. Sometimes a comment/observation is just that. Yes there are people that will have an issue with 2 black anchors. When Allison Wonderland made the comment it was exactly that, a truthful comment. She wasn’t trying to turn this into a racial thing.

@WHAT THE ??? @Allison Wonderful

There is no double standard in your comment or the others who addressed your comment concerning the issue with two african american anchorning 11 Alive newcasts. The issue is why was it brough up. Your simple observation was followed by a simple opinion. Instead of looking at the fact that it is two blacks anchoring. Look at their ability to deliever the news accratrely, fair and balance.

As Wezzy and George Jefferson said” movin on up to the eastside” Another black man makin it big in the Urban ATL…..

WHAT THE ???

December 6th, 2011
4:04 pm

@SB – I personally can’t say why Allison brought it up. However, the comment is a very valid one. As all of us are aware, there are still some with racial hangups. It could have an impact on their ratings. They could decline or they could go up, but someone with racial hangups my turn to a station that at least has one white anchor. Since most of the other stations main one black and one white as their main anchors. With 11 already struggling it could really hurt them. I guess time will tell. For me it doesn’t matter. I despise Brenda Wood. So anyone that co-anchors with her I will never see on tv anyway. They continue to change everything but the one thing they need to change BRENDA. The moment she is gone ratings will go up.
Sorry got side tracked. If you don’t think that it still matters what color the anchors are then you are living in another world. So that is what this has to do with race. For me personally I don’t care what color they are, but I am a realist and I know that it does matter to others.

@WHAT THE ???

I am living in the same world as you, however, we do in fact live two diffrent lives and travelled down two diffrent paths, however, i just believe race should not be bought up in a conversation about two african american newcasters anchoring local news. Those in power at Channel 11 knows what works for them. As far as being a realist, nothing wrong with being one, but its always a limit at taking things at face value.

When is Monica going to retire? She is worse everyday. I think she must have emphysema from the way she phrases. Five – words – at – a – time.

WHERE IS KEN RODRIGUEZ? TYREE HAS TO GO.

December 6th, 2011
11:05 pm

I HOPE Gil Tyree hasn’t replaced Rodriguez. I dislike Tyree so much that I turn the channel when’s he’s on. I didn’t like him on CBS Atlanta. Why did Fox 5 hire him! He doesn’t belong on TV. Please, Fox 5, take Tyree off. If you need a substitute for Rodriguez (hope he’s just on vacation), bring in someone who’s more attractive and palatable. Tyree is going to hurt your ratings.

@SB Some questions:
1.) Why can it not be brought up? That is what I am not understanding about your stance.
2.) Can race be brought up if it is two white anchors? Asians? Hispanic
3.) So are we in general not suppose to talk about race?

11Alive has been slanted toward the black community for a while.

December 7th, 2011

@SB You’re crazy if you think race has nothing to do with it. Atlanta is one of the blackest cities in the country and its no accident that every station has a black anchor at 6pm. Stations try to have talent that mirrors the community. In Miami, you have many Hispanic anchors…and you even have one station, wsvn, that has 2 openly gay 6pm co-anchors – probably a first in this country – and a story that should get a lot more press. WIll some viewers get turned off by 2 black anchors? Maybe – Others will like it – and others won’t even notice.

Oh and likewise if you go to San Francisco, you’ll see Asian talent…Race and demos are very important in picking your on-air talent.

Channel 2 Action News management is very smart about about how they blend their news team and get the market familiar with them before promoting them. They have a lot of talent at all levels and are very good at what they do. My son was fortunate do his internship at WSB and was able to learn from some of the best in the industry. They are also great people off camera.
