Carrie Underwood wins three American Country Awards

We already have the ACM, CMA and CMT awards for country. Fox has inexplicably added a fourth, called the American Country Awards, which goes ACA, kind of a merger of ACM and CMA.

Do we need another country music awards show? Not even close. And most of the A listers were absent last night on Fox.

But since this is Fox, “Idol” alums were there. Jordan Sparks gave Carrie Underwood an award for Single of the Year by a female artist “Mama’s Song.” (It’s a sweet, sentimental song, but did it really deserve this award?)

Underwood also won female entertainer of the year over the likes of Miranda Lambert, Sara Evans and Taylor Swift.

Her third award was best female video for “Mama’s Song.”

And Scotty McCreery won best new artist over acts such as the Band Perry, Thompson Square and Pistol Annies.

Georgia’s own Jason Aldean won six awards including artist of the year and album of the year. He also won two collaboration awards with Kelly Clarkson.

This all vaguely smacks of “Idol” favoritism but alas, you can only take this awards show so seriously. (Like the American Music Awards, it’s by fan votes.)  Earlier, I thought the ratings wouldn’t be so hot and compared to the CMAs or ACMs, yes, they are lower, but with 7.4 million viewers and a 2.0 share 18-49, that’s up significantly from the inaugural ACAs in 2010 when 6 million viewers watched, including 1 .5 share 18-49.

Congrats to Carrie! Good to see that she’s so popular among the voters!

As for the “favoritism”…it only stands to reason that people who vote on competition shows like Idol are more likely to vote on other things, like awards.

Hey y’all.

I’m with D. This awards show is so not needed, but oh, well. I didn’t get to watch as I was busy watching Sarah’s Key. That story is interesting, beautiful, heartbreaking, so many things. I hadn’t read the book, so I wasn’t expecting it to be so heartbreaking…not exactly a holiday film, but I did enjoy it.

Nice to hear from you k&cf! I haven’t seen Sarah’s Key yet and I guess I’ll have to wait until it comes out on Netflix. I’ll be sure to not watch it during a holiday season!

Mercedes, do you have any idea when or if The Descendants comes out in wide release? I’d prefer not to have to go searching for it in the city theaters.

Good morning!

I watched all I could stand of the show last night from a hotel room in Greenville, SC. I was there for my high school reunion committee meeting. It is always a lot of fun.

Cannot wait for all this peripheral stuff to go away and Idol back on!

My little Poodle daughter dresses up in her finest dresses and goes antiques shopping with me, especially in Highlands, NC. She loves all the attention she garners.

My fave movie of all time is “Rocky” (go figure, I hate boxing!), followed by “Hard Day’s Night” and the whole Harry Potter series. Hard to say – there are so very many movies I adore – my “top 10″ would actually be comprised of about 100 movies!

Dearly loved “Knot’s Landing”, “The OC”, “The West Wing”, “X Files”, now loving “The Closer”,
“Castle”, “Walking Dead”, “What Not To Wear”, “Chuck”, “NCIS”, “Good Wife”.

Hal’s is good, but a little tight space wise. Only been a couple of times (christmas party dinners at work), but remember them well.

Last act of kindness was finding a 4 month old LabraDoodle that had escaped a car and living in the wilds behind AMC Barrett Commons theater for 2 1/2 weeks. Took her home, bathed her, took to vet for exam and shots and found her (very undeserving!) owners all in 24 hours. And gave a couple$$ to a homeless man a couple weeks ago.

“Descendants” in wide release; not sure, D. It’s worth a trip in to the Big City, though…maybe if combinbed with Christmas shopping?

Even I think Taylor Swift should have won over “Mama’s Song”.

And Jordin Sparks as awards presenter… not so good.

Checked out end of yesterday’s blog – Deirdre, if you went to Hal’s in Buckhead, where Piedmont dead-ends in Roswell, you were 2 miles from my house!

Mailed Deirdre an article from yesterday’s NYT (which I read this morning) “The X Factor Connects With Its Audience”, perhaps she can link it? Wish I knew how so I didn’t have to bother you all the time, D.

According to NYT, Idol watchers watch but can’t stand “X”. More interesting facts in story might explain last weeks voting results.

I think I’ll form my own award show, an award show that awards award shows. I’m sure there is probably already such a beast, but we need one more. I’ll call mine the KMA Awards, and since the K stands for Kiss the trophy will be lip gloss. I think the first award will go to FOX for creating yet another unneeded award show.

D, no, not finished yet. Am grading final ten-page papers for 35 students as we speak. It is all over but the shouting/grading.

The break in the hotel room was connnected to the reunion committee, and it was very nice. Had a very good time at dinner with committee members.

Ok to answer my own questions from the previous thread:

I’m currently reading Cold Vengeance by Preston/Child. I’ve been reading these guys for years starting with Relic. Just finished King’s 11/22/63 about a man travelling back in time to try to stop Kennedy’s assassination. Excellent!

My favorite movies: rom/com is Sleepless in Seattle
scifi: Blade Runner
horror: Alien(yes, I know that it’s also scifi but, to me it’s a horror movie.)
suspense: Wait Until Dark
drama: The Godfather

TV shows: Currently I love How I Met Your Mother, American Idol, Big Bang Theory, Modern Family and Once Upon a Time. Sticking with The Office, Grey’s Anatomy and Desperate Housewives

Sam-A

I gave up on Desperate Housewives after the first 2 shows this year. So sick of Susan, and all the silly murder goings on they seem to always get away with. Just couldn’t watch anymore.

I do love Sleepless, I have a quatrofectra of rom/coms that I adore, “SinS”, “Pretty Woman”, “Notting Hill” and “Return to Me” (love David Duchovny – just gorgeous in this movie). Should probably add “When Harry Met Sally” to the mix as well. And absolutely love “Godfather” (#1) – remember the moment Al Pacino first walked onto the screen, I was with about 5 girls, and we all let out a huge sigh – I think everyone else at the Phipps Plaza theater looked at us. What a moment! Also love Al’s “And Justice For All” and “Dog Day Afternoon”, as well as “Serpico”.

Most of this ACA mess is NOT Country & Western…but plastic, manufactured “pop”. Ya’ll want some real C&W, get’cha some Bob Wills, Merle, George Jones, Kitty Wells, Coe & the Hanks.

SOR, a number of us here wouldn’t be able to stomach “real C&W” – I myself can’t listen to Carrie U – way to country and twangy for me. There are some who do like country music, but seems like about the same number not fans!

Ok Deirdre, I’ll bite.

I’m currently reading “The Inheritance of Rome: Illuminating the Dark Ages”, “Alice in Wonderland”, and trying to get re-started on “Lord of the Rings”.

Favorite movie ever is “The Beast” with Jason Patric. My genre picks are: SciFi it would be “Event Horizon” or “Total Recall”, for horror it would be “The Ring”, comedy is “Tommy Boy” or “Benchwarmers”, finally Action/Adventure: “Avatar”.

As far as TV shows: “Doctor Who”.

To round out the list of favorites: favorite video game is Skyrim.

Sam-A

SOR: Luckily, you could say most of the “regulars” around here are definitely not rap/hiphop fans! We’re ages ranges from about the mid-20’s up to the 60’s, so we’re a pretty darn diverse crowd, long time Idol fans, and not too happy with XFactor. So hopefully you’ll feel right at home here, especially when Idol season starts again – surely after this season of XFactor, Idol will not allow any rap crap!

“definitely not rap/hiphop fans”? Are the Black Eyed Peas rap/hiphop? Just curious how I should classify myself.

Sam, I figure when I’m old and crusty that I’ll still be playing video games. Heck, I know that even Nana plays (and she’s definitely not crusty), as I understand it she could beat me in Bowling on the Wii. I don’t watch much TV, in fact I barely watch any, I instead spend my screen time playing.

I could have gone with favorite song. Maybe that wouldn’t have ‘dated’ me as much. Favorite songs for me: “Broken Wings” by Mr. Mister and “Float on” by Modest Mouse.

Thanks, D. I’ve been around just so busy with work I really haven’t had much time to blog.

But I’ll play the game:

What books are you reading? I finished reading The Hunger Games serues and I’m now midway through The Help. I have yet to see the movie, but might pick up the DVD to watch over the holidays.

What movies are your favorite ever? I have so many movies, but here goes: Home Alone 1& 2, Back To the Future (1 & 2), The Goonies, Titanic, Mean Girls, Clueless, The Rocky series, Love Actually, and Elf. Just had to add the last holiday ones.

What tv shows top your list as the best you’ve seen? Friends, Will and Grace, American Dreams, Sex and The City, E.R. Grey’s Anatomy (TV candy), The O.C. Friday Night Lights, Idol (of course), Current shows: Walking Dead, Vampire Diaries (more interesting that True Blood, imo), Modern Family, The Killing.

Any acts of random kindness that you’d like to tell us about? Other than giving $$ to charity and doing the Samaritan’s purse, I’m still looking to do more.

Taking a break, so here are mine:

Not currently reading, due to busy semester, but the last book I read last summer was Water For Elephants.

Favo rom/com Sleepless in Seattle, too.

Drama a tie between The Shawshank Redemption and The Elephant Man (a tie)

Sci fi don’t like the genre much, so no favorite

Horror not much on this one, but one that has stood the test of time is The Shining

Tv shows American Idol, The Good Wife, Revenge, Mad Men, and the ETV music specials

Harriett

Sam, it’s a song from 2004, but since it was released after 1969 I didn’t expect that you would know it. ;)

As for comedy: Seinfeld was great at the time, but I find that I can’t go back and watch it again. Friends on the other hand I find myself able to watch over and over, kind of like MASH.

Sam-A

Past tv shows? MASH, Mary Tyler Moore, Cheers, Friends and definitely Lost! And I forgot to put Walking Dead on my list.

“What books are you reading? ”
Just finished Shock Wave by John Sandford and getting ready to start on his newest ‘Prey’ novel, Buried Prey.

“What movies are your favorite ever?” (In no particular order.)
Action: Any of the Connery or Brosnan Bond films (Dalton & Craig okay, even Lazenby, but NOT Moore!), The Boondock Saints, Lethal Weapon series, Highlander (gee, bet you didn’t see that coming!).
Comedy: Caddyshack, Waking Ned Devine, Zombieland, Wedding Crashers, Grosse Point Blank.
Thriller: Silence Of The Lambs, Day Of The Jackal, Consenting Adults.
Horror: From Dusk Till Dawn, American Werewolf In London, The Exorcist, The Omen.
Drama: Braveheart, Godfather I & II, The Departed, Heat.

“What TV shows top your list as the best you’ve seen?”
Dexter, House, Big Bang Theory, CSI, Home Improvement, Mythbusters, Saturday Night Live (back when it actually was funny).

“Any acts of random kindness that you’d like to tell us about?”
