Falcons’ Matt Ryan cites Oprah during ‘audible’ on Sunday

How about this for a strange Oprah reference?

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan was caught yelping “”Four-Oprah!” to his offense during the team’s 24-14 victory over the Vikings on Sunday.

He said this during an “audible.” In football terms, an “audible” alerts a quarterback’s teammates that he’s changing a play at the line of scrimmage when he notices something different in the other team’s defensive coverage.

James Duthie, a broadcaster for Canada’s The Sports Network, overheard Ryan’s “Oprah” call.

“I thought I was hearing things, but the guys on the broadcast [Brian Billick and Thom Brennaman] mentioned it briefly in passing,” Duthie told the New York Post. “And a couple of plays later I heard it again. It was bizarro.

“I actually like the fact that they have a little creativity. They can really say anything they want at the line [during an audible] and it’s usually mumbo-jumbo, letters or ’slant this, post this, corner that.’”

The Falcons declined to comment.

…worthy of an “entertainment report” because why?

And, the guy did not “overhear” anything – the audio from the game picked up all the audibles (Mercedes, Chevy, etc ), which were heard by every viewer in addition to the announcers and this dolt you are quoting, so why not comment on all the free advertising rather than this non-story…

It’s nice to get some worldwide pub. I couldn’t care what Matt yells out at the line of scrimmage as long as we get the win at the end of the game.

Rodney, do you even know what football is?

I agree with the first poster. This does not warrant a blog post in the Radio/TV section. If you have nothing to write about, then don’t. Every time you do write about something you have little to no knowledge about, you just expose yourself as the idiot you are.

@Enemas For Easter. This story was actually in the New York Post first, then Fox Sports. I just thought it was interesting, even if yes, my knowledge of football, is relatively minimal.

All of Matt Ryans audibles, are PHONY. They call the play, walk up to the line of scrimmage, then Ryan starts screaming Oprah, Mercedes, Chevy, whatever, then they run the original play called. Its all a phony diversion, trust me.

KimZ’sPackage is defending himself that his since deleted comments calling Oprah fat and black were not racist. You can argue it either way. But it was what one would call gratuitous race baiting, a way to get people to react so he could then lay claim that the world is too P.C. It’s a common pattern on these blogs, unfortunately. If he wants to do that, he should do it somewhere else.

Leave the sports to the sports writers and stick to your wimpy TV, radio and American Idol blog. I assure you that will eliminate any of this so called race baiting which is just really people pointing out your lack of football knowledge.

@The Reverend Baby Doctor Bedpan I know I’m no sports expert but that blog entry was only there because it had an Oprah reference, that’s all. And the story originated from The New York Post, not me.

Rodney Ho

@tc I know zip about audibles. I just saw the item from the New York Post, thought it was interesting given the Oprah reference and posted it. Nothing more, nothing less. Oprah is in the wheelhouse of the readership of this blog. It made for an odd juxtaposition, which is why the Post wrote about it, too. And for them, there wasn’t even a local angle.

Watch a green bay game…those fans are crazy..but you’ll see how smart they are when rodgers is conducting his offense. Again they had mics on the sidelines that pick up everything. If you watch showtime they use that sound bites for their nfl show. Yes there are fans missing in the stadium..but thats at most stadiums in this economy…not all..but most.

racial – of or characteristic of race or races or arising from differences among groups; “racial differences”; “racial discrimination”
2. racist – discriminatory especially on the basis of race or religion
