CBS hires new evening anchor Guy Rawlings to join Stephany Fisher

18922242_240X180

Since anchor Bill Gaines abruptly quit CBS Atlanta in May, 2009, the station has left Stephany Fisher as the solo anchor at 11 p.m.

But more than three years later, the station (WGCL-TV) has finally found its man: Guy Rawlings from the NBC affiliate WESH-TV in Orlando.

(Is that a broadcaster name or what? Old-timers in this town will remember another notable “guy”: the late great WXIA meteorologist Guy Sharpe. “People don’t believe that’s my real name,” Rawling said, “but I’m actually Guy Rawlings Jr.”)

“I’m really excited and a little bit anxious,” Rawlings said in an interview today. “I wanted to try something different, look for a new challenge. A lot of my friends who are sports anchors are unemployed. Local sports seems to be shrinking. This opportunity is a hybrid of news and sports. I had to jump on it!”

Better yet, his parents live in Johns Creek. “This will be the first time we’re in the same city since high school!” he said.

According to Rawlings’ bio on WESH-TV, he joined Orlando’s station in 2007 from nine years in Miami. Before that, he’s worked in Baltimore, Charleston, S.C., Jacksonville, Fla. and Gainesville, Fla.  He has been in the business 19 years. He did fill-in news anchoring in Miami so this new gig will not be entirely new to him.

His final day in Orlando is Dec. 23 and his start date at CBS Atlanta is sometime in January, 2012.

He will also take one of the three late afternoon/early evening newscast anchor slots but it has not been determined which one, according to Kenny Lawrence, head of programming. (Kim Fettig and Jaquitta Williams will continue to be afternoon anchors.)

He is hoping to learn from Fisher: “I think my presentation skills are pretty strong but I look forward to getting even strong, especially next to Stephany.”

Rawlings will also be a “sports host,” according to the press release.  That role will be limited primarily to the football season, Lawrence said.

“He won’t be doing sports reporting in terms of sports segments in the news,” Lawrence said. “But we have all these weekend sports programs. He will join that staple of talent.”

This is an interesting development because CBS Atlanta outsourced its sports coverage to 790/The Zone two years ago (dumping Gil Tyree and Mark Harmon) and has stopped doing daily sports coverage. Rawlings will supplement the Zone talent.

Andrew Saltzman, a general manager at 790/The Zone, raved about the arrangement: “It’s been awesome. It’s been a huge win for us. The CBS Atlanta folks have been tremendous partners. It exceeded our expectations.”

The station also noted in a separate press release that its “Better Mornings” program has shown steady growth the past year – though it doesn’t mention that it’s still far behind the other three rivals.  It has also seen strong growth in its 4 and 5 p.m. newscasts year over year.

What’s up with Gaines? He identifies himself as a “voice-over talent” in the greater Los Angeles area, according to his LinkedIn page.

Its laughable what gimmicks these TV stations come up with next. I’m still watching for a station to rename their weather dept “The Very Severe Storm Watcher” when the sky has been clear for two weeks, lol.

What is with you people? Stephany Fisher’s eyebrows somehow trumps this station having no noon news at all!! And a licensed meteorologist on hand every morning to do nothing but report on traffic?!

Its great to see an African American male on the local station for a change. All the others are hiring young inexperience white males. Black males are never represented on the local stations (except early mornings when no one is watching…hello fox 5 and wsb tv). I will definitely move over to CBS now.

Hey Steve, it’s pretty bad when you choose a network based on the color of the personalities……news is supposed to be color-blind………..sad when everything you see is through the color spectrum………..

In case you don’t know this city is mostly African American and we should have representation as such. That rule applies in the work world. You should always represent your customers. ***And to PREZ OBOZO****…..Country was going under when Bush was in office, Obama has prevent another great depression, got bin laden, reform wall street so we won’t have to bail them out again, prevent GM and Crystal from going under, finally bring our troops home, ended “don’t ask don’t tell” etc. so if you call that poor leadership I will take it anyday…lol

Is Prez Obozo serious or doing a parody of the typical GA Republican? WTF? Yea its taking a while to clean up the mess left by the last tenant. And unfortunately the Republicans are blocking meaningful deficit reduction because they want the economy to not recover. They are putting their desire for more control or elected jobs for them over the need to create jobs for the U.S.

If people are going to let Talk Radio blind them to facts then I fear democracy could be in its last generation.

To Steve – I agree, this city is mostly African American. Thats why I moved because the government is entirely african-American managed. Thats why there is always an issue with Atlanta. From school cheating supported by an extremely, well educated superintendent, to corrupt police officials, judges, garbage services & auditing issues due to your brothers in arms always looking to ‘beat the system’. Sadly I understand you will always support anything & everything as long as its someone in your culture.

It obvious that WGCL has had little to no luck with male news anchors since the late ’90s. The 12 names I’ve counted… Mike Stevens, John McKnight, Ray Metoyer, Steve Johns, Calvin Hughes, Todd Shearer, Chris McWatt, Tony Harris, Rich Noonan, Bill Gaines, Mike Moore, and Mike Brooks. I’m hoping that WGCL can hold on to Guy Rawlings and Brandon Rudat as long as they possibly can… maybe breaking that cycle of male anchor turn-over.

It seems that the 790 The Zone sports team on WGCL has had its share of mixed reception… not sure if WGCL plans to revive in-house sports department anytime soon.

I could picture the graphics and theme music getting a makeover. I would like to hear “CBS Enforcer NG1″ on WGCL (similar to what KYW-TV currently has), instead of the “CBS Enforcer NG2″. WGCL bringing back the news opens.

Not sure what to make of the new 9AM hour of ‘Better Mornings Atlanta’. I too wish WGCL would revive the Noon newscast… as well as revive the 4:30AM half-hour of BMA… ‘The Better Show’ moving back to 12:30PM… ‘The Young & the Restless’ staying put at 3PM.

@bwell – Guy Sharpe passed away in 2004. Guy Sharpe was a fixture to Atlanta TV for many, many years… worked at WSB and WAGA, before moving over to WXIA. Guy retired from WXIA in 1996… Jim Axel retired from WAGA later that same year. Jim passed away in 2009. Both were very well-liked and well-respected.

Congrats to WGCL for hiring another anchor no one will see! Many of those former male anchors mentioned in a previous post left of their own accord. That is, they saw what inept management in a market dominated by two other stations is a no-win situation. Obviously someone is buying ads on this terrible station, or they would replace the news with reruns of Judge Judy.

Affirmitive action is ok in the TV business.
But please do not apply this government rule when it comes to commercial airlines and the hiring of airline pilots.

WGCL is tryin’ sooo hard 2B hip wit all da ethnics properly rep-present! they’ve overlooked news coverage…The only thing ‘mostly’ African-American about the city of Atlanta is the government -same reason there’s a liquor store on every corner and a gun store across the street!

Another black anchor (I refuse to use the term “African-American) to give the news to a population that is primarily black in Atlanta. Atlanta has turned into a cesspool of corruption and crime ever since the Maynard Jackson days. This is not to say that all white politicians are pure and innocent (far from it) but the changes in Atlanta are obvious since the late 70’s. ‘So glad that I live in the hinterlands.

Rooster: What facts do you have to support your view of “a population that is primarily black in Atlanta”? Obviously you haven’t seen the latest census figures, which puts Atlanta right at about 50% black. I really don’t know what Mr. Rawlings race as to do with it, or this broad-based attack of Atlanta being a “cesspool of corruption” as some sort of explanation of why this African-American was chosen to anchor CBS Atlanta News. Also, in case you didn’t know, there are two new young white anchors on 11Alive and WSB, so are you suggesting that they were hired to provide news to a population outside Atlanta?

Black or white…..doesn’t matter. Competent? Now, that’s relevant. Mr. Rawlings comes with a laundry list of experience so that’s WESH’s loss, and CBS’ gain. I look forward the “new” CBS evening news.
