Lauren Alaina sang the National Anthem at the Packers-Lions game Thursday night. CREDIT: AP
It was a tough day for the top two season 10 “Idol” contestants.
Lauren Alaina forgot the words for a moment to the National Anthem before the Lions-Packers game Thanksgiving. She was supposed to sing “at the twilight’s last gleaming” but started to sing “through the twi…” Her brain must have realized she sang the wrong word and she froze. After about three seconds, she skipped “at the” and started with “last gleaming.” She then finished the song without incident. “It’s all in how you finish,” announcer Joe Buck said.
She owned up to it on Twitter soon after:
Thank you everyone for the kind words. But the truth is I messed up. I’m gonna spend the rest of the day being thankful for all my blessings
And winner Scotty McCreery didn’t start his cue on time during his lip-synced portion of “A Trouble With Girls” at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. Yes, everyone I saw yesterday at the parade was lip-syncing so that’s not the issue. He just missed the first three words of his song so he made it really obvious:
I saw him on Channel 2 WSB-TV last night at the Macy’s Great Tree Lighting at Lenox sing “Christmas Cookies” with no problems and he sang live. On Twitter, McCreery didn’t comment about the lip-syncing issue but did say he enjoyed Atlanta:
great time at the show tonight for Macy’s in Atlanta! now time for some thanksgiving grub!
Here’s the first season 11 “Idol” promo with actual contestants (but no singing):

Thanks Rodney.
I’m not sure that missing your lip sync cue is a big deal, especially in a parade. I feel bad for Lauren however. Scary enough to sing the National Anthem but missing a word and letting it throw her off must have been really upsetting to her. She got it back together very quickly which in and of itself is pretty hard to do. I thought Joe Buck’s statement was really kind but it hasn’t stopped a lot of mean-spirited folks from maligning this sweet girl.
These two people, Scotty and Lauren, are not my favorite winner or runner-up by far but they are nice kids with nice voices.

These are good kids and good singers, and they’;re young, too. They will overcome this. I hope we don’t dwell on these situations for the rest of these kids lives. I expect they will excell in their lives.

The National Anthem flub was a disaster. It shows how stupid most of the country reallt is. How can you forget the words to your own countries National Anthem?!?!?! Also these two mess ups give a black eye to American Idol which is not such a bad thing since that show should have been off the air years ago.

Lauren is beautiful, has a beautiful voice, and that song is difficult, no matter what! Ever try it? Especially in front of thousands!! A cue card is the safest bet to avoid “stage fright” when singing or speaking in front of an audience, She is right, being thankful for blessings is a very positive response and after all….if that’s the worst thing that ever happens to her, she will be blessed even more than she already is. God, bless her, she’s a sweetheart!

Saw her on the Performances special from the White House the other night, and she did a great job, even with Mr. and Mrs. O’bummer sitting right there in the front row. She has lost some weight and is getting more and more prettier. She has a great personality, I hear from those in Nashville. She is still young so give her a break. Some of these old-timers forget the words and that’s inexcusable. Oh, BTW, I knew it was obviously lip-syching going on when I saw Rodney Atkins singing. If you ever hear him in person you will wonder how he ever made it.

I do not find enjoyment at their expense. However, I do find a certain amount of self satisfaction in that the people who voted these two in as the winner and front runner just simply don’t recognize musical talent and don’t know what they’re doing when it comes to music. These are the same people who buy up Taylor Swift and Miely Cyrus and thus allow the music industry to shower them with what I think are undeserved acclamades. Scotty and Lauren should not of won and this pretty much reinforces that thought.
It also makes me wonder if I’ll ever enjoy another season of American Idol. Because for now, I usually enjoy it up until the top 4 or so. I think it would be great if one of these shows would embrace the teens choice of music and contestants leave the other talented people for the other shows.

bobw…the song is difficult enough, even for those of us singing in the stands. In front of 50,000+ live with the reverb in the stadium(in other words, she’s hearing herself twice, the second time a few seconds AFTER she has already sung a line)is it any wonder that so MANY professional singers bobble it. AND may I add that many of the pros lip-sync the song in that situation.
For a 17(or is she 18 now) year old, the recovery was terrific

@bobw, I agree with you. I’m sorry you don’t give someone a pass for flubbing the National Anthem. You give them a pass for lip-syncing or messing up words to some random song. It’s the National Anthem people!!! I know she’s only 17 or 18 or whatever but it is truly offensive for me, a soldier in the United States Army, to watch someone, who’s sole job is to perform in front of people, screw up their own countries National Anthem!!!! Learn the words, or don’t accept the invitation to sing it. Put a soldier up there, he won’t forget…

Great point, Airborne….put a soldier up there to sing the Anthem. Even if they can’t sign, the meaning of the words to the song would be even more poignant. Who said a good singer had to perform the song. Wait, wait, forgot Roseanne Barr was asked to screech….

Aguilera, Bolton, Lauper have all sung the NA live and messed it up. Most others sing along with a pre recorded version.
And I would bet even a soldier would have trouble with the words when facing that many people and the echo in the stadium. How many times have you been in a stadium(big or small) when you have to stop singing for a few secondes because the sound is echoing and it’s hard to find where you are in the lyrics? Happens all the time.

bobw, Our national anthem is terrible. Someone took the first stanza of a poem and set it to music. It’s a difficult song to sing well.”America the Beautiful” would be a much better anthem in my opinion.
But the real question is this: stupid? Really? Learn the difference between “countries” and “country’s” and you might have room to talk. She forgot the words to a song in front of a stadium of thousands and a tv audience of millions. She’s still a kid. Give her a break and quit acting like it was a treasonous offense.

Yes, Lauren Alaina experienced a bit of stage fright, but her performance was very moving. If you watch the players’ faces, they are really feeling the song. She sang it quite well..one of the best versions I’ve heard recently. I had rather someone flub a line due to stage fright than to deliver a lackluster, weak vocal on the National Anthem.

First, every singer in the parade yesterday was lip syncing. Scotty just didn’t do it very well.
Second, there’s a huge difference between Milli Vanilli , who pretended to be singers when they weren’t and someone who lip syncs to their own voice. silly comparison!
Third, yes, Lauren is a professional singer(for the last 8 months) when most 17 year olds are flipping burgers.
Fourth…what the frak does politics have to do with it? Any child(and a 17 year old is still a child) who messes up the lyrics to the NA should not have to listen adults calling them names…no matter what political affiliation they are.

This was the worst year of Idol ever and these were the worst contestants ever. I tuned out about 2 months before the end because the contestants had no talent and the show was unwatchable. And the love affair between the judges and the contestants made it worse. It was obvious McCreary was going to win weeks ahead of time. Perhaps the vote is always rigged to let the country singer win. He was awful and so was Alaina. Bring back Simon because it’s obvious the judges that are left have no idea how to pick talent and no idea how to criticize.

So Scotty’s not used to lip synching. Doesn’t surprise me–the guy is used to singing live. And anyone who has ever heard him sing live can attest to how amazing he sounds live–almost as good as the studio versions. A voice “like butter.” As much as those AI fans that didn’t see their favorites win will complain, it’s all in the numbers. His debut album is already certified Gold and heading to Platinum possibly by end of year. Pia’s single flopped; James Durbin’s first week sales predictions are dismal; and Lauren just can’t keep pace with Scotty’s sales and popularity. Yes, I think America got it right. I feel bad for both, but especially Lauren. She has taken a lot of blows and its hard to tell how much more a person can take before they do something “stupid” e.g. drugs, drinking, cutting, driving reckless, pull a Britney and go marry the first guy you see, then shave your head, control issues with food like anorexia, etc.. My daughter forgot part of her song in a piano recital. She knew it, she just froze in front of the church. Luckily, it was only 100+ people not millions. But she spiraled down and it took everything for us to get her to shake it off. They need to get her “back on the horse” pronto and all the people being critical need to check themselves. I don’t know why Americans like to tear people down but some teens in general can’t take this kind of abuse without a bad outcome.

I’ve heard Lauren sing the National Anthem at numberous events before – perfectly! The song is difficult because it is slow and drawn out and usually a capella. You forget where your at in the song. Never understand why they dont use an instrumental accompanist. ANYBODY – sing it 10 times and I’ll bet you flub at least 6-7 times whether your a professional, military person or reading the words.

Just catching up after a glorious six-day weekend.
Mercedes… Astro rapping the National Anthem will never happen. He only raps his own stuff.
And did anyone else read that Simon wants J-Lo for X-Factor next year?

Simon wants JLo? So she’s going to have a bidding war going on? Has he watched her judge on Idol because, seriously, she’s not worth a bidding war as a judge but more than worth it considering the publicity he’ll get.

Rickster and D, Simon just likes to stir pots. I’m sure he’s reconsidering his fellow judges though.
L.A. guy knows nothing outside his very small fifedom of rap, Nicole might make better money elsewhere promoting water-proof mascara.

anyone watch “Walking Dead” last night? Very satisfying… but NOW, what will happen??
“The Closer” starts the final final season tonight!

I have a million shows(might be a small exaggeration) because of last week’s trip to CA and hubby came home with a horrible cold. He’s been vegging in front of the tv for a week and I can’t get near my taped shows. Haven’t seen last week’s Walking Dead, never mind this week’s.

Maybe regarding the Packers, but I’m serious regarding the Lions. Even people in Detroit don’t watch that team. I have yet to meet anyone that says “I’m a Lions fan.” I have met a few people that like the Packers, mostly females who only liked them because they had a crush on Brett Favre. Something about his “package” I’m not up to date on football lingo so I’m not sure what they were talking about.
Oh X-Factor… how many more weeks until it is done and they can announce that Steve Jones has been let go?

Since you’re not following the Lions(and I’m not either really) you might not have heard that they got off to a really fantastic start this season and Detroit fans flocked to the stadium for a change.
Since then, things have kind of gone a little down hill. Mostly because they have a player named Suh who thinks attempted murder is part of the game. The guy has serious anger-management issues and will possibly kill someone(either on or off the field) before he can get himself under control.
Maybe he could be a judge on XF. Simon is always spoiling for a fight.

Is last nights “Walking Dead” the last one for awhile? Haven’t seen it yet. If so, will surely miss it.
And SAD that this is the last few episodes of “Closer” ever – really love that show and all the actors – what a great ensenble cast – can’t believe they’ve never won any ensemble awards!
Simon can have Jen Lo – I don’t plan to ever watch another season of XF (what a waste of time), and would love to have her leave Idol.
Saw “Hugo” (interesting) and “Descendants” (Hawaii gorgeous and George really good, but not sure how much I liked the movie).

When I watch X-Factor…. from the judges, to the host, to the announcer, to the contestants…. I keep thinking to myself…
“THIS is the best they could do?”
I can understand Simon – it’s his show. If he wants Paula…. it’s his show.
But out of thousands of contestants, and doubtless hundreds of announcers that auditioned… and the numerous music figures that undoubtedly had to call Simon to express interest, we’re to believe that these are the best they could come up with?
Simon’s totally blown five million bucks.

XF would have been a perfect venue for Harry Connick Jr. He really enjoyed the mentoring he did on Idol. Would have been great to see him rather than LA Reid.

The first thing I wondered when I read that rumor is who would he replace? So, he already thinks that someone needs to get the boot. I doubt it would be Paula when I watched she actually did better than the other two.
We already know that a new host is on the way.

I agree! Of the 4 judges, Paula has been the best. Nicole is useless and LA has no stage presence or ability to see past his particular brand of music.
As for the host, I think Simon went for looks in hopes that us girls would go a little gaga over him but, frankly, I kinda like my guys to have a little personality. The anti-Seacrest has none!

Sam-A, the ensemble of “The Closer” is too good to let go – something will come up!
I was bored stiff by “Hugo” or at least the first hour of it. I knew of Georges Méliès since film school, of course, and enjoyed that part, but the bland kid got on my nerves.

Going back to a comment made by “Frommie” – the big scandal about Milli Vanilli was that other people sang the songs they lip-synched to. AND… they won a Grammy for it.
That’s a BIG difference than the fact that Scotty was lip-synching to his own song.

Mercedes: I found “Hugo” a little slow, but wasn’t really bored with it. It was so visually interesting, I made it thru unscathed by boredom. I loved finding out that the filmmaker was real. I’ve seen that little film of the moon and the rocket many times, so kinda had a feeling there must be something to him more than a fictional character. Needless to say, loved the scene where the mean little boy daschund “found love” – that little girl was so beautiful. Did you notice the boy dog’s mama was the Giantess Head Mistress of Beaux Baton from “Goblet of Fire”?

In American Idol news, Hollywood Week begins on Dec. 11 and contestants who pass muster will then go to Vegas(why, I ask) for the Cirque du Soleil challenge…Michael Jackson songs….where the top whatevernumber for this year will be named. They will return to their homes by 12/22. At this point, Joe’splace will be frantically(and successfully) finding out the spoilers for the top whatevernumber it is this year.
Count on spoilers before the end of 2011.

Speaking of animation, I really liked “Arthur Christmas”, even though I’ve had my fill of Christmas movies, new and old. But this “Christmas” is made by the “Wallace and Gromit” people, so the animation is clever and the dialogue full of quips only adults would get.
And speaking of Tin Tin, I’m about to start Susan Orleans new book “RIN Tin Tin”…

Saw Susan Orleans on Today this weekend. I used to watch Rin Tin Tin series when I was a kid. More interested in that book than in the movie “TinTin” – I just don’t like those films that look like humans/scenery painted over to become cartoonish.
