J.R. Martinez, the 2002 Dalton High School graduate, took home the 13th mirror-ball trophy tonight on “Dancing With the Stars.”

This was not a surprise. His credentials as a war hero, his vibrant personality and his exuberant dancing style all contributed to his victory.

“First and foremost, I want to thank everyone who voted for us for 10 weeks,” Martinez said. He then credited Karina Smirnoff, his partner, for her first mirror-ball trophy.

He is the second consecutive winner with Georgia ties after UGA grad Hines Ward. Martinez’s mom still lives in Dalton and though he only spent senior year at Dalton High, he considers it his hometown.

Going back to my predictions ten weeks ago, I made some really smart picks and some bad ones. I predicted Rob Kardashian would be out within three weeks. He ended up the runner up. But I also picked Martinez and third-place finisher Ricki Lake in the top three, along with Hope Solo, who came in fourth.

UPDATE: Ratings (19.5 million) were good but among 18 to 49 year olds, the 4.1 rating was its worst fall finale ever. The show skews old, with the average age watching about 57 years old.

People shouldn’t win just on sympathy votes.

And the only reason Rob was even there was because of his sisters, the dysfunctional three.

JR Martinez doesn’t feel sorry for himself so why should anyone else? He was the best dancer, the most fun to watch and he and his partner deserved to win. Rob did a great job too and so did Ricki.

How could anyone say that JR won on sympathy votes! He truly danced amazing from the start not toward the end, the guy has talent and it showed no one feels sorry for JR, simply because he doesn’t allow it, he is a true competitor who got his just desserts. Way to go JR.

Ricki had the highest scores from the judges in the finals and throughout, this is suppose to be about dancing not popularity1!!

You should be absolutely ashamed of yourself. JR put his neck on the line so you could have freedoms … freedom of speech just to say something sooo stupid. He didn’t need sympathy votes to win. He is a first class act – handsome, full of energy and charisma, and a lot of bravery to put himself out there so people like you can critcize him. Congrats JR, you deserve it!!! We Love You!!!

Sympathy votes? I saw not one comment anywhere about anyone feeling sorry for J.R.? I never heard one “poor me poor me” comment made by him or about him on any sight anywhere. Sympathy about what? Yes, what happened to him was a tragedy…but look what it has done for him – and for anyone who knows anything about him. He became the man he is today – giving, inspirational, kind and uplifting – and very brave! He won DWTS on a combination of talent, personality, courage, hard work and inspiration – nothing there to feel sorry about – and he would be the first to say that. Congratulations to him – well deserved!

Rob had no business being in the final two, it should have been Ricki and JR. When they announced that Rob was in the final two, I switched channels as there is no way I was going to spend another second on a Kardashian, especially those fake family members in the audience….

Woke up the morning and yes, JR won….he was deserving of the trophy because of his dancing ability alone.

Get over it, folks. It’s just a show. Yes, it’s a real competition and all these guys are really working hard, yes, even Chubby Chaz. The winner had to capture judges votes and audience votes, so it is partially a popularity contest, but those are the rules and have been since day one!

I’m just a spectator; I don’t vote nor care about the votes. I don’t care for Mr. Kardashian, not his brood of spoiled brat sisters. But he put out an effort at the last (where it counted) and impressed better judges than me. Lake and Martinez performed well through the whole competition and both deserved the recognition they received.

And, yes, as a veteran, I am blown away by the example of the American spirit that JR has set.

I personally predicted that JR would win the trophy from the very beginning of the show. Thank God that he needs no sympathy or empathy from anyone. He has God’s gifts/talents and they were utilized from the very start. I commend him for his hard work, personality, spirit and determination. A last name should not carry weight for winning any contest. (Rob) – especially, if you have not proven yourself in the competition. If someone – calling no names decides to boycott – trust me the show will continue on in spite of what you feel or think at this point. Congratulations to JR and his professional dance partner!!

I was surprised to see Rob K. be in 2nd place, but he did kick butt on Monday night. But the final two should have been between JR and Ricky. Ricky did great throughout and could have won, but I was glad for JR and that Karina finally won one.

But, question: WAS JR’s girlfriend there last night!!? I didn’t see her in the audience, nor come up to congratulate him after the win. I saw his mom, but where was the GF…? I hope nothing happened the night before. Anyone see her…?

And, Rob K strikes me as a little…sweet; is he gay?

it was not fair that jr was on niteline an ABC show the night before the winner was announced, allowing more viewers to vote in a.m. after seeing the interview. However, it is ok w/ me he won because he could dance and was always gracious when the judges critiqued his performance. My fav was Ricki.
She was robbed of at least 2nd place. Rob K ? I mean, What?. Thank God they did not top the winner. Sorry Ricki, you really were robbed.

@Shame on you. JR did not have to go regarding our freedom. All this would not be necessary, if our country leaders had different international policies, then just invading other countries, and killing their innocent citizens. All that, and more on this country’s taxpayers accounts, thus bringing our country further down, and down, again.

RE: ROB WAS ROBBED…maybe “sympathy” wasn’t the best word.. I think JR won because of his back story (along with his dancing). If just judging from the finals I think Rob should have won, he had progressed in his dancing ablilities the most. BUT as a whole JR had more showmanship and danced better throughout the competition. All three finalists did well.

For all those complaining about who won, should have won or didn’t win…did you even VOTE ?!?!?!? J.R. and Ricki were hands down the best dancer but EVERYONE knows who watches DWTS, that viewer’s votes are the ones that chooses the winner. We see that is how Bristol Palin got to the finals !

Last night I said the show was rigged and Ricki Lake would win even though I thought JR should win. I am glad I was wrong…..JR was fabulous. No sympathy votes went his way. He deserved to win and he could dance. Rob was robbed, what a hoot! However, he did lose some of his girly butt. He improved over time, but he definitely didn’t out dance JR nor Ricki Lake.

Ricki looked good because Derek is great. Derek is the best pro, and JR was the best “star.” Rob was very good too. Results were “right on.”

@Fez ~ JR is a star! Besides starring in a war helping to fight for YOUR freedom, he was also a star on All My Children. Sure a soap opera, but he also delivered star performances…how about you.

Wait, Fez, are you Uncle Fez from The Adams Family??? Guess they should have recruited you for DWTS.

I too thought the show was rigged. I know I saw Ricki Lake holding the ball in a short clip on one of the previews….Because I had commented Monday that it was rigged and Ricki would win…my apologies. I was wrong. I’m glad I was wrong. JR was the true winner and Ricki should have come in second. Rob Kardashian was there because of who his family is and his Mom pushed him to participate. He said that. JR won, not on his family riches but because he was the best dancer. Sympathy is the last thing he wants and he has proven it by continuing to succeed in all his business/goals assets. He has not allowed his tragedy stop him from achieving what goal he sets his mind to. That’s not sympathy. CONGRATULATIONS JR and KARINA. …. I’m glad he is from Georgia.

My two-cents worth:

J.R. had what Donny Osmond had – not always the best dances, but enough showmanship to hide the errors. He also had the benefit of having Carrie Ann and Bruno giving him up to 2 or 4 extra points each week because of who is was, not how he danced. I get it. They liked and admired him, but they didn’t always vote according to his dancing.

In the final dance with all three contestants, Ricki did have the best dance, but Rob was clearly better than J.R. You could hear it in Len’s explanation about the disagreement in the judge’s scores. I think he liked Rob’s footwork so much he felt (as I did), that Rob should have been in 2nd place with that last dance, especially with the out of sync beginning to J.R.’s final dance. Carrie Ann and Bruno both commented on it, yet still voted for J.R. over Rob.

Ricki would have been in the finals with better viewer support. She was that good. That she NAILED that Psycho tango reprise (an extremely difficult dance due to the score – ONLY Derek could have choreographed that number) was evidence of that. Most visually artistic dance of the entire series.

Despite how many happen to dislike Rob for his family, Carrie Ann was right in that he was the perfect contestant for the show – start off slow and improve every week. He deserved to be in the final three. His arm work was still a bit stiff, but his footwork was exceptional at the end (as Len, the only judge with ballroom dancing experience pointed out).

Kudos to Chynna Phillips for finally nailing her Mission Impossible dance following the brain freeze weeks ago. Without that, she could have been in the finals. Gorgeous dancer’s lines.

Kristin Cavalleri showed why she was voted off way too soon.

Loved Chaz and Lacey’s (and her Dad’s) Chunky routine.

Ditto Carson’s Vogue takeoff. Never has one man without a shred of coordination entertained in a dance.

Great camerawork on Hope and Mak’s last dance. Early in the routine they swung by the exterior of the dance floor and her move ended up kicking one of the spotlights – hard. A fitting end to the soccer star’s run on the show – kicking something.

Could have done without seeing Metta World Peace again, but his partner is smokin’ hot.

And it goes without saying that Tom Bergeron is the best host – bar none – that could be on that show. His ability to handle any and all needed ad-libs is without peer in this industry.
