Jimmy Baron and Yvonne Monet's morning show is over after two years. CREDIT: Dave FM
Dave FM, which has gone through five morning shows since its inception in 2004, is now looking for its sixth after letting Jimmy Baron and Yvonne Monet go this morning.
General manager Rick Caffey declined to say why they were let go but said the station will be “taking its time” seeking a replacement. For now, Steve Craig will cover as interim morning host.
That name may be familiar to 99X fans. Craig was the mid-day host at that station from 1992 to 2007. He then spent near three years in New York under Leslie Fram (now at CMT) working as a jock at WRXP-FM, a rock station that recently switched to news.
As a result, Craig lost his job and rumors instantly popped up that he would end up at Dave. He quickly nabbed some part-time work there and even came in one morning to gab with Baron and Monet, who are also former jocks at 99X.
[UPDATE on Friday, 11/11/11: Craig did his School of Musical Knowledge bit he used to do on 99X and WRXP. The quiz question was what was the theme song of "Chuck." Answer: "Short Skirt, Long Jacket," which he then played.]
It appears Christopher “Crash” Clark, the traffic guy, may stay on at V-103 but not Dave. [UPDATE: Renee Washington who had been doing traffic during afternoons on Dave, took over Friday morning.]
Dave FM’s ratings have fluctuated up and down over the years. Earlier this year, the station had some strong months but numbers sunk sharply over the past five months.
In January, the station had a 4.5 share, tied for eighth and a 6.2 rating among 25 to 54 year olds, worthy of third place. By October, it had sunk to a 2.0 overall share, of 18th place and a 2.6 rating among 25 to 54, ranking them 15th.
Baron and Monet’s morning show, which was recently cut back to 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., lagged behind the rest of the station. Management kept the show fairly music intensive.
In January, among 25 to 54 year olds, the show ranked 11th. By October, it was down to 20th. (Dave’s strongest day part for years has been mid-days featuring Mara Davis.)
Baron had an amusing gathering he’d do every month called “Dads Between Gigs” where unemployed dads could meet and commiserate in this lousy economy. Baron himself was unemployed for three years between 99X and Dave FM.
Scott Jameson, the station’s third program director since 2004, joined the station in 2009 and hired Baron. (The general sales manager John Riemenschneider was recently let go.)
People who listened in this morning heard Baron joke to a listener that his simple wish was to still be employed by his birthday, which is Nov. 13. “You’re good to go,” the listener said. “It’s only Thursday,” Baron said. Before the morning was out, his joke came true and he was unemployed.
Going back to the time when the station was Z93, the signal under different owners has been unable to find a stable morning show. None has lasted more than three years.
Here’s the parade of hosts since 1989. I’m repeating some info I wrote back in January, 2008.
1989: Barry Chase.
1989-1992: Chase & Woodside. The pair worked at Z93 when it was a top 40 station, the very first FM morning team in Atlanta back in 1974. Managemtent thought it would be cool to bring them back together as a team. Woodside, in an interview in 2008 recalls that their ratings were moving up (No. 3 25-49 at one point) until management told them to pull back on talking about themselves and shortening bits and such. Ratings went down and they were soon goners.
1992-93: Slats. Does anybody remember him and what happened?

1993-96: The Greaseman (Above, WZGC’s only syndicated show) He was a grating, loudmouth shock jock type who often got in trouble. He split the audience. Some loved him; too many hated him.

1996-98: Gary McKee (right). After a long illustrious run in radio, he was at the tail end of his career and was burned out. He has since retired from the business.
1998-99: Charlie & Company. This was a comedy-oriented show that wasn’t quite ready for primetime.
1999-2002: Dave Marino. He’s a talented guy who was never utilized properly or given room to breath.
2002: Moby. After a long successful stint at Kicks, Moby simply didn’t fit well in the classic rock mode and lasted only a few months. Management shoved him to traffic to try to get him to leave but he stuck around for several months getting a big paycheck and doing traffic while the “Mission Impossible” theme played behind him. He’s now doing a syndicated morning show heard on country stations in Rome and Athens.
2003-04: Mara & Dunham: This was a quick fix after Moby. The pair was just starting to congeal as a team when CBS pulled the plug on Z93 and switched to Dave.
2004-06: Barnes & Firfer: Hoping to resurrect the magic of 99X, CBS hired Steve Barnes (right) with CNN’s Holly Firfer but without Leslie & Jimmy, it wasn’t quite the same.
2006-07: Firfer & Orff: This was a stopgap show, which actually did as well, if not better, than the Barnes days.
2008: Zakk Tyler. A complete non starter. Zakk couldn’t hack it and was out after less than ten months.
October, 2008: Tim Orff: Orff came back from a night jock spot to cover mornings for the next 11 months. He is now a night jock at Star 94.
August 17, 2009-November 10, 2011: Jimmy Baron paired with Yvonne Monet.
November 11, 2011– ??? : Steve Craig becomes interim host.
Coincidentally or not, local media planner Roddy Freeman wrote a column this week in his blog about Dave FM’s woes this week.

What a mess, when you look at history of Z93/ Dave FM. Only show I like now on Dave is Mara at lunchtime… She is funny and doesn’t take herself too seriously.

How does Dave expect a program to succeed when you won’t allow them to do anything that’s interesting to listen to. I like Jimmy and Yvonne, have since 99x, and I listened often. But I think they had their hands tied.

If you throw in the Top 40 years, you can add Randy Miller (1987-1988) to the “not three years list”. (He left at the very end of 1988, right before Z93 flipped in January of ‘89.) Steve McCoy (1981-1987) was the last morning show to make it more than three years on the station.

What a scary business to be in. I remember a friend in high school (in the 80’s) telling me she was determined to be a disc jockey. I thought that sounded so fun….play the music you liked while others listened to what you had to say about it. Now…not so much. These people get shuffled around more than a deck of cards. Ads for these jobs should say: Must have thick skin (and $$ in the bank for when we inevitably let you go with no warning).

good luck to them, I enjoyed listening to this show. I like the station, but they seem to change to often for the sake of change. This type of music is not going to draw ratings like V103 or Q100, so what. They have a good format and fill a niche market, but I think most people my age (early 40’s) have careers and the only time to hear local radio is during their commute.

Originally back in the early 80’s, didnt Chase and Woodside get pulled off the air after making a comment(song title)/playing a song after a body was found during the missing and murdered children era? Gary McKee was not for DAVE FM but I grew up listening to him and he was funny. The whole Moby thing was not a fit from the beginning but he landed with his own show now. I dont listen to DAVE FM but isnt it more for the type of music than the morning hosts?

Okay, Dave FM, your real problem is the fact that there are more commercials than content, and I dislike most of your music selection. If I wanted oldies, I’d listen to 97.1. Jimmy and Yvonne were the only tolerable part of my morning commutes. Now, I’ll just rely on the online traffic maps and plug in the pandora radio….at least it listens to what the listeners actually think.
Good luck, Jimmy and Yvonne! I hope you land somewhere we can hear you soon.

Liked Dave Marino; good utility jock. And this will be lost on future generations as music moves away from mass broadcasting, but being a good jock was a talent. McKee was a talent; moody but a talent. Doug Tracht invented “shock” radio, but he crossed too many lines. Last I checked, he had an afternoon show back in Jacksonville.
Tolerated Jimmy and Yvonne at best because I didn’t care for the other stations. Oh well. Guess I’ll see how Craig does.
Hopefully the station knows that keeping Mara is why they’re still on the dial.

Steve C is one of the best DJs I’ve ever heard…his knowledge of all things music is second to none. However, since Dave isn’t all Alternative, not sure if he will fit things to a T…but willing to give him a listen and see how entertaining a morning show he can deliver. More humor, more great songs, less zero rez commercials.

I remember reading, literally days before Baron got this job at Dave, that after three years of being unemployed he was starting a one-night-a-week trivia hosting job at a Mellow Mushroom. Man, that’s gotta suck. I’ve always thought Jimmy Baron was one of those annoying guys who thinks they are this cool hip dude but are actually a total dud.

Personally, I think sending Mr. Baron on his way was long overdue. I never like hearing that someone has lost their job, as I have been there, but this is his pattern. He can hold it together for a couple of years, and then his true nature comes out. I have been really put off by him since the first day of school this year when in a bit of “comedy” he humiliated a young kid on his first day of school. Certainly the parents need to be held to account, but what kind of man thinks it is okay to pick on someone, in public, who has absolutely no way to defend himself.
I like Yvonne Monet quite a bit, and will miss her in the morning. In that respect, I think Dave FM made a mistake, but may not have had a choice because of contracts. I was always a fan of Holly Pfirfer, and thought she and Mara Davis were the best talent at the station.

Not everyone has the money to pay for Sirius or whatever else may be available. Internet in my car? You people must be joking. The only real thing to listen to is music CD’s. If I could play vinyl records in my car I would. Here’s the poop, as I am also a former 99X employee, I have suggestions (of course): Dave needs to pick the pace in their music, really slowing down to less than Adult Alternative!! Second, let Steve program his own show like he did as mid-day host at 99X, that allowed him to really rock that slot. If they give him the room, he could bring some glory to the morning show and make it permanent. Give him the full time slot 6-10 like other stations, don’t knock it down, stay in the game.

Radio execs must be the thickest-skulled folks that walk the earth. The personalities of the hosts are not what bring listeners. Good music, concise news and traffic, and a reasonable number of commercials do. The hosts are not the listeners best friends. They are there to transition between segments. Firing the staff every six months only makes things worse.
Radio Execs: you need to come up with a format that limits the hosts’ role and stick with them. You’ll sell plenty of ad time…

As an Atlanta native for 50+ years, I can attest that this area has the worst radio in the nation! I spent 25 years in a career that had me traveling within all four corners of the country and can assure you that Atlanta is the cesspool of radio in the US! Any market, and I mean any market, has better radio than Atlanta. Corporate idiots who are too spineless to tell their bosses what they need to hear instead of what they want to hear has put them in their position. As others have suggested, satellite or internet are the way to go now. It’s sad, but these moronic managers of the radio stations have done it to themselves. However, I am lucky enough to be close enough to listen to WATG 95.7 in Rome, GA. Now, there’s a classic rock station who hasn’t gotten taken down by “corporate management”. Radio the way it should be,…..like it used to be! If you’re close enough, tune in. You’ll realize that this small town radio is better than anything coming out of Atlanta these days.

I agree with the others, this was the only local FM morning show that I enjoyed. Jimmy and Yvonne are both long-time Atlanta icons; I can’t see myself embracing a new Dave FM morning show after this abrupt end with this talented duo. If Dave has rating issues, it’s because they have a very repetitive play-list (They don’t seem to embrace the wider, deeper-cut playlist that most Jack-type stations in other markets emulate). Good luck Jimmy and Yvonne, I hope you catch on at a more successful station; I don’t think Dave FM will exist much longer.

Re: Dave’s format – those of you who like 70’s rock have got The River. No way does Z93 need to come back. There really is no station these days for us Gen X-ers who don’t want to listen to top 40 (Star 94, Q100), and don’t want to be screamed at (Project 961, Rock 100.5). I like the “new” 99X when I can pick it up (living NW of the city, the signal is spotty).
I agree that Dave does try to stretch the catalog a bit – if you’re playing Mumford and Sons one minute, how does that segue well into Tom Petty the next? If you’re wanting to be the Adult Alternative station in town, pare your music down to early 90’s forward – leave the 70’s/80’s to the other stations.

Orff was the most entertaining DJ on radio. His voice is pleasant, he shut up, he played music. Bob was excellent as the traffic guy. Crash Clark must have something big on someone big to keep his job. If I want to hear the drunken ramblings of a drunk I would stay at the bar.

Get in the street, be visible and give away t-shirts and bumper stickers. Forget contesting; just give away t-shirts and cards for free music downloads. Use social marketing (it’s free). Bring back the oldies concerts. The artists are old and broke down, but so is the audience.

Marty, Jay – yep, Ross and Wilson. I remember they were the biggest thing in Atlanta radio at the time too, so it was a big deal when they all of a sudden disappeared.
Not sure if anybody remembers, but in the late 80’s or very early 90’s there was a local talk TV station (channel 14 – WTLK maybe?) that was launched and Brian Wilson of that duo was one of the hosts (I want to say maybe Bortz and some other local hosts may have had shows too – didn’t last long at all). In a way kind of predicted the days of HNL, etc.

I liked Jimmy & Yvonne and now I’m searching for another morning show. I want to get up listen to some current and past hits, listen to the DJ’s and what going on with them and in the community, get the news and weather before work. Is that too much to ask? Apparently it is for DaveFM. Oh, and let’s not forget that you didn’t fire them BEFORE the Radio-thon for Children’s Healthcare.

Jimmy Baron is WAAAAY past his sell-by date. His voice is annoying and a 50 year old doing juvenile just doesn’t cut it.
Yvonne has class and I hope she lands on her feet.

DaveFM really needs an overhaul. For about 6 months straight, every day when I’d leave my parking deck at 4:10, like clockwork they’d play “Pumped Up Kicks.” Oh, and they’d announce it as the “new” song by FTP. For six months. They took a good song and ran it into the ground.

Morning talk radio is nothing more than a lead-in to ply the listener with endlessly repetitive commercials. I gave up on commercial radio years ago, especially morning talk, when every station I turned to was playing commercials ad-nauseum. Atlanta sucks for a lot of reasons and radio is near the top of the list and this station is the worst. There is no more generic, payola platform being played out there than this crap. They only play the radio hits from a few artists, regard songs as “new” for months, and the music does not flow at all and does not fit in with ANYTHING. Two pm? Time for Runnin Down a Dream. Four pm? Play that Ray Lamontagne song that we played an hour ago.
Complete crap and I hope CBS gives up on it so they can start over with interesting content.

I havent listened to DaveFM in a while. But Mara was pretty fun to listen to. Steve Craig should be an upgrade over Jimmy if they make the morning format more of a music first format with Craig filling in interesting tidbits about the music. 99x had a good afternoon slate that was superior to the Baron, Steve, Leslie show.
And as others have said, expand the playlists. Mix in the tired songs with some fresh songs. The tired old songs will keep the lame crowd tuned in and they might , just might, give the fresh old or new songs a chance. Think about the KInks. Wes Anderson has shown that that they have songs that can reach a relatively younger generation beyond the tired old You Really Got me or LOLA.
It does not have to be as dull as Deep Tracks on Sirius. Here is a good example of a track that could fit in on Dave FM that is not overexposed on classic rock radio – Girl Talk by Dave Edmunds.

CBS Radio is part of the problem, once Mel Karmazin left in 2004 (He’s the one that grew Infinity Broadcasting into a powerhouse back in the 1980s and into the 90s, including buying Z93 back in the early 90s.), the place went to hell.
I remember Greaseman back in the 90s, man that show was awful. There’s an old rumor/story that the reason why Z93 ended up airing his show is because when Infinity was in the process of buying the station, NC Senator Jesse Helms put pressure on them to not put Howard Stern on Z93 (Presumably because if conditions were right, Z93 could be picked in parts of North Carolina right over the GA border.). In order for him to not try to use his influence to block the sale, they supposedly agreed to not put Howard Stern on Z93 (It never stopped the Stern rumors whenever Z93 fired their morning show [This also would happened at 96 Rock as well.]).
Here’s an interesting idea for a format flip, classic alternative. Think something along the lines of a station that plays of mix of bands like R.E.M. (everything prior to Monster), the B-52s, The Smiths, U2, The Cure, The Pretenders, mix in some obscure New Wave stuff and with someone like Steve Craig at the wheel, classic punk. Essentially, his old House of Retro Pleasure/Retroplex show as the basis for the entire format. One of my favorite stations on SiriusXM is First Wave, which is a lot like listening to the House Of Retro Pleasure all day.

I prefer 99X but the signal is so weak that I listen to DaveFM more often. Jimmy and Yvonne were pretty good. I really like Yvonne. Jimmy is past his prime. I am so glad Steve Craig will be back. I got so excited when I heard him on the radio again. I was hoping Mara would be replaced by Steve. She has turned mid day into a mommy corner selling Wheat Thins and bug spray.
The swing in content at Dave is making me batty. Who are they trying to keep as a listener?? I love hearing Coldplay, but followed up be Fleetwood Mac?! Are you kidding me? They need to leave the oldies to The River and Rock 100. It seems like they are creating over lap and identity issues. Do what you do and do it well. Adult alternative with smart music presenters. Would I like to hear Vampire Weekend and AWOLNATION on Dave? Yes, very much so. I know it is very unlikely and I understand why. That is the same reason I do not understand hearing Queen, Talking Heads and Tom Petty.

I wonder what Dave FM’s morning show would have been like if Jimmy and Yvonne were permitted to actually be themselves–less controlled by management. Their best moments were always when they teased each other and enjoyed each others company/personalities. Authenticity is so important and when we rely on just one of our senses (hearing), we intelligent people readily pick up on the disingenuous or constrained demeanor these two were clearly forced into. I like Crash, but I will miss the morning reparte between Jimmy and Yvonne!

Clint at 12:22 — you, sir, don’t appreciate good music… U2 and The Police trump 95% of the crap that is out there these days. I personally love the Dave FM music format — mid-80s-to-mid-90s stuff. Everything from U2 to Counting Crows to Dave Matthews to Sting to Gin Blossoms. There is some good music from that era.
Dave fan at 11:34 and Sid at 12:06 — very good points. I always liked the “House of Retro Pleasure”, when Steve would spin some forgotten and rare and cult-classic 80s tunes on 99X. And I listen to a variety of things — some CDs, some Ipod music, some radio, and some Sirius Radio.
The BIG problem with broadcast radio, especially in Atlanta, seems to be this: unless a station is constantly pulling numbers like a Bingo hall host on crack, they cut the cord in a matter of months. You have to let a show GROW. In Rodney’s story, he said “Dave FM’s ratings have fluctuated up and down over the years.” Well, DUH!!! That is what ratings DO!!!!! It is a VERY in-exact, in-accurate method to guage listeners (and TV viewers)… there is really NO way to know how big an audience a station or certain show has… it’s nothing more than educated guesses. And with remote controls and station pre-sets, people flip around all the time. I hate to tell the advertisers, but sorry, not many people listen to commercials much anymore… it’s just a fact of life. So when finicky advertisers want a change, or when a ratings period is a hair lower than it was before, stations panic and pull the plugs.
Here is the way to fix some things:
No. 1 — quit paying a king’s ransom for on-air talent. We don’t care who the names are, we just want competent, intelligent, entertaining hosts on our radio. Just because you pay them $60K or $70K or $100K or more doesn’t make them better. Learn how to manage your money and resources better.
No. 2 — quit changing formats/shows/lineups as often as you change socks. STICK with something for a while. Give it time to breath and grow an audience.
No. 3 — find a good music FORMAT and then use VARIETY within that format. Don’t play the same 8 songs all day long.
No. 4 — balance the commercial-to-music ratio. Sometimes you overload the audience with too many ads.
No. 5 — won’t happen, but bring back the mid-1980s on-air lineup from 96Rock … that was some great radio and great music! Mark and Steve in the mornings, John Boy in the midday, Kady Kiley in the afternoon drive, Willard at night, and the sulty McKenzie Scott in the overnight. All kinds of cool features (morning show skits, Willard’s “Perfect Album Side”, Kady’s 5-o-clock whistle, etc.) and some great rock music. Those were the fun days of Atlanta radio….
Good luck to Yvonne and Jimmy in the future, and I hope Dave FM can hit on a formula that is successful.

There are several very good radio stations in Atlanta and they are all College Stations except WRFG, which is a complete crapshoot, but fun to tune into now and then. Great African music on Saturdays. WRAS is a great place to hear new music and special programming, WREK is great. WCLK great jazz and of course there is always public broadcasting and NPR, all of these are diverse interesting resources, most are noncommercial and aren’t stuck in a groove of playing the same 25 songs over and over while some zombie DJ tries to feign enthusiasm for the crap he/she is stuck playing.
DAVE is the corporate version of “alternative radio” which is itself an oxymoron, DAVE should just play commercials 24/7 and traffic, it would take most of their listeners months to catch on and they could save a fortune in on air talent and music rights.
Sorry to hear about Jimmy Baron but he’s been dancing in his sleep for years, maybe he should write that novel he never had in him.
Atlanta commercial radio is virtually dead, but there are plenty of great alternatives. Give some of them a try, you might be surprised.

This is bad, while I didn’t listen every morning, l did enjoy them. Yvonne is very entertaining and I am sure she will find another home. I also like Margot in the evenings, and to echo others, the music needs to be refreshed, there are only so many times you can listen to Adele. I wish programmers would not run songs into the ground but I suppose there is some reason that they continue to do that. Charles Henry is not entertaining at all, he bores the hell out of me, if anyone should be let go it should have been him. I will give Steve a chance in the AM but he seems a bit aloof and detatched sometimes, not real high energy.

Jimmy had his moment back in the day (1990’s). I can’t say that I get anything out of listening to him anymore, which is probably why I didn’t listen very often. This is really sad news! Yvonne and especially Jimmy seemed to really give Dave FM that unique feel that was missing for so long. Liked Jimmy better on DAVE FM; he’d mellowed since 99X (less Larry Wachs-ian). Always loved Ms. Monet. Noticed they’d been playing older and older rock. Jimmy & Yvonne’s morning show is the reason my radio was on during the traffic filled commute and when I got into the office. Dave fm messed up big time for letting them go. Their chemistry made morning’s fun. And to all of you screaming about the on air ads: The reality is Radio Stations NEED COMMERCIALS since its the advertising that pays for the management & talent salaries along with the music royalities. So don’t be hate’n on the DJ’s for the ads!!!! If you want to get back at the suits at Dave fm then start calling up the advertisers and tell them why you are leaving the station!

This is the reason why Atlanta is F***ing dying in the radio business. They don’t let the audience to decide what we want they decide for us. I thought Jimmy and Yvonne were doing great but apparently they were not producing enough money for the Fat cat. ***Listen People***** use your android or Iphone and listen to Iheart Radio, there are a bunch of awesome radio stations called GenX in the North, or Voddo 104 in New orleans…that will show big executives here in the ATL why they keep failing ….they just DONT know what we want!!!!

If the powers that be at Clear Channel, Lincoln and all the other corporations that own radion stations want a station that will have great ratings and staying power, perhaps they should consider a listener driven format – put up a website and let the listners build the program. Tell what kind of music WE want to hear; what WE want from the on-air talent; what kind of promos/events WE would enjoy. Give us what WE want and WE will listen. If WE build it, WE will come & bring our friends!

I am very p***** off! Jimmy and Yvonne are the best thing to come to Atlanta radio since the glory days of the morning x! Jimmy and Yvonne had great chemistry, they are funny, insightful and very entertaining. I am 51 and have been a JB fan for many years. I have a 25 year old daughter that also likes the show, so it is not just older folks. I have always enjoyed Dave FM’s music. After going thru several morning shows that sucked and finally getting it right with Jimmy and Yvonne and to pull the plug 3 days before JB turns 50 and right before the holidays is cold!!! I know it’s a cruel world, but this is crazy. I am not happy today and I can only hope and pray for Jimmy and Yvonne. I hope they are ok!! I have met and talked to both of them at events and they are truly good people! I will miss them and hope they find a new home in Atlanta radio soon!

As a new comer to the Atlanta Area, I have to say I am very disappointed with this move DAVE & the Suits! Jimmy & Yvonne were the ONLY radio personalities i could listen to in the Morning! I did not know their history, until reading these comments …& have no loyalty to any radio station past or present in this area. I really liked DAVES programming & rarely does my station change…except when they overkill with commercials! As a 40 something they were playing a good mix of old & new…but the past couple of weeks its gettting back to the old Classics..that have gotten so stale in the last few years!
Good luck Jimmy & Yvonne..I hope you move on to bigger & better things..I will be listening for you in the future!

Jimmy and Yvonne were the only morning station I could stand, but frankly I’d prefer less talk and commercials and more (good) music. The real problem at DaveFM is the music, not the DJs. Who wants to hear the same song 15 times a day? They have about 20 songs they play in repeat rotation all stinking day long. BORING!! I’m sick of Adele. I’m sick of U2. I’m sick of Jack Johnson and I’m sick of Mumford and Sons. Play music people want to hear and they’ll be loyal listeners. It’s that simple. It is RADIO, after all, so give the people what they expect.

Chase and Woodside weren’t the ones let go for playing Another One Bites the Dust during the Atlanta Missing & Murdered Summer….that was Ross & Wilson. They were around from 1978-1981 and they OWNED the Atlanta morning time slot. They were absolutely hilarious, but went too far that one day and were fired so fast they never knew what hit them.

As I watch the poll I posted, I notice a pattern that has happened when other personalities get fired: at first, many of the folks who don’t like them and see it on ajc.com will post their opinions. But as days and weeks go by and people who are fans of said fired personalities go on Google and find this story, they vote in favor of them, shifting the percentages. It’s already started. It hovered at around 62% positive, dropped to 60%, and has now edged up to 65% as we hit the 24 hour mark.

Well, don’t blame the talent. If they were allowed to operate the way they wanted too, wthis wouldn’t be a discussion. Radio…REAL RADIO, went out the door when the Corporate Conglomerates took over. Now its ad traffic, ad traffic, ad traffic. Music directors and programmers where told what they could play, leaving no room to break new music. Then I saw the light in th article, corporate man, RICK CAFFEY. Need I say more? He has rode many a station into the ground while still maintaining his association with the corporate office. Can you say YES MAN?

More corporate crap. Jimmy and Yvonne must have been making too much money. (Too much money in radio is anything over minimum wage). The problems at Dave aren’t the jocks… it’s the management’s decisions. (Funny when you compare that to Kicks… where the problem IS the jocks).

Oh, this station. When I first moved here, I thought it was a joke. Their “format” is like a 30 track rotation with 30% of that being Police and Tom Petty. And those songs are all the old radio hits, they never explore more of a band’s catalog. One time, they played Bittersweet by Big Head Todd and the Monsters every single day for a week, at the same time. I was not sure if they actually had DJs or if it was just running on someone’s ipod. The noon DJ and the one after that try to drive traffic to their website which is just a bunch of links to weeks old web memes. It is a really really sad station that seems to have no focus at all. The music is weak, repetitive, old, and from a limited selection. The show at noon is supposed to have a theme and go based on requests but the DJ only plays songs from their puny rotation and then she talks and screams very annoyingly at her failed attempts at humor. It is an awful station and they need to gut it AND START WITH THE MUSIC. STOP PLAYING THE SAME CRAP OVER AND OVER AND DIG A LITTLE DEEPER INTO ARTISTS’ CATALOGS.
Scott Woodside
November 11th, 2011
12:59 pm
I’ve read the comments and can’t help but add to this. Barry Chase and myself, Scott Woodside were the first two man morning show on FM radio in America. We started at Z93 when it went live from a recorded elevator music station. We both made $225.00 a week and that included major medical.
Let me say this to you guys. Radio is the only business in the world where you get fired for doing your job. Air talent is very rarely ever fired for doing something wrong. You get fired, or your contract isn’t renewed because you are doing what management wants. When management gets the ratings back and they suck, do you think they’re going to fire themselves? No, they usually use the morning show producer as the first scapegoat, then when that doesn’t work, they fire the morning talent, and then when that doesn’t work, the program director is fired.
I spend 30 years in broadcasting and loved every minute of it but I’ve got to tell you, that I can’t even believe how many morning shows CBS radio has been through in this market. And to think that when Chase and Woodside reuntied with the new classic rock format in 1989 and we’re still the longest running morning show that station has ever had and with the highest ratings ever, it’s really sad.
Number three in the market. The management decided they wanted to be number one so they cut out all of our talking opportunities and asked us to say the time and temperature and introduce or backsell the music. When we did what they wanted, our ratings went down the toilet overnight. Shocker……Even back then everyone wore a freaking watch and could access the temperature in their cars. But that’s why we had consultants.
I will have to say that Dave Marino and Scott Woodside had the best chemistry that two people that could ever be put together could have. We worked just a little time together on Z in the mornings, and then the reigning program director thought we were too funny or funnier than the people he had brought in from another part of the country. The program director said that he couldn’t have us being funnier than the talent he just brought in from out of town, so we were gonners.
It’s not fun re inventing yourself after 30 years in broadcasting, but its not impossible. I feel sorry for Jimmy turning 50 and wondering what he’s going to do next. Been there, and it really sucks.
Any morning talent that has been thrown pit in the street should go into sales. Every morning we all had to sell ourselves. So it only makes sense!
Take Care,
Scott Woodside-Atlanta

Ross & Wilson were not fired for playing Queen’s ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ during the missing and murdered child crisis. Ross & Wilson were hired away to WABC in New York. Like the newspaper editor says in the move ‘Liberty Valance’, “When the legend is better than the truth, print the legend!” This apocryphal story seems just too damn juicy to ever go away. There’s a lesson to be learned here, and in all media consumption. But it won’t be, because the legend will always be more compelling than the truth.

Think Dave plays too much T.Petty & The Police? Whatta ’bout The Church “Under The Milky Way”. Once a year is fine; but every day? I agree Dave should choose a format and stick with it but not Classic/Adult Rock. Lord knows there’s enuff of that mess. Do Alterntive but do it right!!! Hiring Steve Craig would be a step in the right direction I just don’t know if he fits in the morning. He was mid-day at 99x & WRXP (for a while anyway) and I think that frees him up to play/talk about music. Go from there. It’d be a start!!!

Kind of sad after the long hours they put in doing the charity event last weekend at CHOA. I donated because I listened to the AM show. I know the funds are for the chilldern but I wish I could rescind my donation in protest. Finally found a decent adult show to listen to and yanked again. Sorry…it’s Dave FM’s lost. I am SO HAPPY that they are getting rid of Jimmy. I used to love when they played music in the morning and Carter would give the news, but then they brought back Jimmy with Yvonne and that loser Crash. I accidentally listened two mornings after they brought them back. One time Crash was talking about Yvonne’s breasts. The second was after this year’s Pride and they were asking men how many drinks they had but they were bleeping it so it would sound like something else. Childish and disgusting. You may agree or not but Steve Craig is the only pure DJ (and most professional) this city has had in a long time. No gimmicks, just about the music. I like Jimmy and Monet, and Crash, but if they can somehow land SC on a permanent basis, it’ll be a home run for the station. I listened to Jimmy and Yvonne fairly regularly but sometimes got turned away by some of the stuff they got into. I know now my dial will stay fixed on 92.9 during my morning commute. I enjoyed Jimmy and Yvonne, and the show really seemed to gel once Crash came back to Atlanta. However, I wonder how much of the inconsistencies in the ratings was due to the predictable (almost down to the minute) and uninspired musical selections offered up in the mornings. I, for one, don’t need to hear Joe Jackson ever again, let alone every single morning.
Who was responsible for the music played in the mornings, the over-abundance of advertising and the cut-back in the show’s air time? Surely, not the talent. Jimmy, Yvonne and Crash offered something more to the Atlanta air-waves than the juvenile humor and shock-jock antics available on other outlets. For a maturing audience who likely listened to the Morning X in the good years (not the Toucher years), it was a bit like coming home. For me, there is a place on the Atlanta airwaves for that.
Steve Craig is an awesome DJ and I will continue to tune-in to hear him in the mornings. I was stoked to hear the College of Musical Knowledge this morning, but I doubt that he can fix the problems that Dave FM is experienceing, despite all of his talent. For Jimmy, Yvonne and Crash, I wish nothing but the best. And for Steve, I will continue to tune it. I just wonder what the House / Duplex of Retro Pleasure will be called, now?

Good luck to Jimmy and Yvonne! The (somewhat) intellegent 40ish crowd needs a station that has a good balance between news and music that caters to us. Hopefully 92.9 will find a way to incorporate a little new music + good 80s + good 90s + NPR style news + traffic/weather.

A big fat fail for Dave FM. As a 40 something that spends over an hour each morning stuck on 400, I have kind of grown up with Jimmy and Yvonne over the years. I was sad to see the whole 99x team get split up years ago and felt very lost and dismayed by atlanta radio until Jimmy, Yvonne and Crash came together again. I am very sorry to lose them again. I am too old and don’t care to hear about some 20 year old’s dating problems on the Bert Show, am too young to listen to steve and vickie (are they even still on?), and can’t stand to listen to the ever revolving door of xxx wannabes on Atlanta’s harder rock stations (though i generally still like the music). I want to like Dave FM, I generally like most of the music the station plays but I think the reason the ratings have dropped is that they play the same 5 songs over and over again all day. Even I get sick of U2, at least play a different U2 song, not “its a beautiful day for the 10,000th time! For that reason, I listened to Jimmy, Crash and Yvonne’s show in the am then turned the dial to something else each time I got in the car for the rest of the day because I was sure to hear the same songs at the same each day! All it takes is a little variety! I don’t care if the artist list is somewhat narrow. play some of their older stuff, mix in new songs. Quit playing the same damn 5 songs! As for why I liked Jimmy, Crash and Yvonne so much – unlike some stations – they have a real feel for the local flavor – they have lived and build their lives in the area. they cared about the area. Its sad that they got let go after spendng a weekend helping generate nearly $500K in donations for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Listening to their show was more about in some small way like visting with neighbors (something I never get to do for sitting on 400 all the time) and keeping up with things that are relevant to me – the 40-50 year old that still has some kick left to them. Jimmy might have been annoying at times but we know that is just how he is – you kind of accept it like you do with an old high school friend and over time come to appreciate his point of view. Crash was the old party buddy that never really grew up (but can’t hang like he used to) and always has a story about his latest escapade and Yvonne was just right sweet kind soul that calmed everyone down and put Jimmy in his place when he needed it. sure the show was corny some times – but I looked forward to it. It had a old worn jeans homey feel. It made the 400 parking lot more bearable each day. It made me smile from time to time. I did not have to worry about turning the radio down so that my 6 year old would hear something he should’t. I will miss them and sincerely hope that some radio executive will hear this plea – and what is missing from Atlanta radio – and why so many are defecting for other forms of music entertainment. There is a place for local talent to help inform, entertain, amuse and sooth those that are stuck in traffic hell each day. And at 40 something and probably in my prime income earning years – I think that I am still relevant as far as advertising dollars go. Good Luck Jimmy, Yvonne and Crash – I hope to find you again soon somewhere else on the Atlanta radio dial……..
