Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson join VH1 Divas again; Steven Tyler takes a tumble

They’ve done it before and they’ll do it again: Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson are part of the upcoming VH1 Divas charity concert.

They will be joined by Jill Scott, Florence + the Machine, Mary J. Blige and Jesse J. (Jesse J? Really? Does anybody know who she is?)

Taped at New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom, VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul will air Monday, December 19 at 9 p.m.  on VH1.

Given Adele’s vocal problems, my guess is she wasn’t available though she certainly would fit the bill.

Each diva (and diva is a compliment here, folks) will pay tribute through their own soul-inspired songs as well as the greatest classics that have shaped a genre.  For someone like Kelly Clarkson, this will certainly be going back to her “Idol” roots. Some of her most memorable performances in 2002 were soul classics. And Hudson? She is all soul.

The event supports VH1’s long-running Save the Music program to fund music programs in schools.

Here’s Hudson doing “Spotlight” on VH1 Divas 2009:

Here is Kelly Clarkson doing “Already Gone” for VH1 Divas.

- So what the heck happened with “Idol’ judge and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler anyway? He was in Paraguay and ended up falling in the shower, resulting in four stitches, reparative plastic surgery and two dental implants. He explains to Matt Lauer of “The Today Show” that he had not fallen off the wagon.

“Frankly, I just passed out,” he explained of what, if not a relapse, led to his injuries. “I was in the shower and I got nauseous and I started to get sick and I just fell on my face. I just passed out and woke up with the water on.”

Check out the photo. He does NOT look good, even for Steven Tyler.

- “The X Factor” finished with 12.09 million viewers for its first live show Tuesday and a 4.4 share among 18-49, tying its best to date among younger viewers. That’s still far below anything “Idol” has gotten and short of what “The Voice” typically pulled in during the spring on NBC.

Morning!

Chris Daughtry will be singing the National Anthem for game 7 of the World Series tonight.

I’ve got a ton of stuff on the agenda today. I’ll pop in when I can.

And JT, you’re right! I was so busy watching the diva songs that I never even noticed that the Tyler paragraph had a link.

Morning!

Dang it, I just couldn’t stay awake last night for Game Six. I saw the first out in the 9th inning and then conked out and woke up at 1:30 AM. Missed the excitement, but glad the Cards pulled it out.

There is another thread that is up, but the discussion date says Oct 27 and Rickster is saying goodbye. Guess I will just stay here for now.

I found out this morning that all four of my tires are in need of replacement. How could it be that I was not warned of the upcoming need the last time my car was serviced? They supposedly rotated my tires then. Grrrr. Oh, well, thank goodness for my credit card that I was so happy about because of a zero balance.

Harriett, I was saying goodbye… because it was time to go home. :-)

From the dearth of comments in that thread… it looks like you’re not the only one staying here.

The reason is that the other thread doesn’t show up on the “Latest ‘Idol’ & related news, from AJC’s Rodney Ho” link that many of the regulars use. I don’t use that shortcut because, probably to Rodney’s annoyance, I comment on his other threads too.

Ok, then, Here we are! They just called, saying my tires are in, so I am off to spend eight hundred dollars right now. :( Be back in an hour or so.

(mid) Morning!

Three entertaining movies opening today – “Anonymous”, “In Time”, and “Take Shelter”.

“Anonymous” is a costume spectacle about crazy conspiracies – that the man known as Shakespeare could not have written his plays, that the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth R, would periodically retire to the country to deliver another illegitimate child, and a bunch of other hard to believe “truths”. Rhys Ifans very good as the nobleman behind Will, and Vanessa Redgrave ditto as the queen in her dotage.

I had fun at “In Time”, a dystopian fantasy written and directed by Andrew Niccol, who made the similarly themed “Gattaca” a couple of years ago. In the new movie, a man introduces his daughter, his wife and his mother-in-law, and they all look like they’re 25 years old. That’s because at 25, the folks in this beautiful nightmare stop aging. They have only one year to live, though, unless they can “pay” for extra time. Justin Timberlake is a working class guy from the “Hood” , where people are only a few hours away from “timing out”, and Amanda Seyfried a doll-like rich girl with hundreds of years to live.

Best new movie this week – “Take Shelter”. Michael Shannon will be nominated for an Oscar! He plays a man with odd nightmares – or are they premonitions? Is the world facing an environmental disaster… or is Shannon’s honest, normally dependable, family man going skizo like his mom before him? Jessica Chastain equally good as the wife trying to stand by her man. Fabulous twist at the end!

Thanks for the movie tips, Mercedes. Of all you reviewed for us, Take Shelter appeals to me most. I hope to get to see it. Our local film critic only gave the Timberlake film two stars. It is not my type of movie anyway. They cost so much to go and see that I really pick and choose.

Okay Rodney, you got me. On the earlier thread about Diana DeGarmo you wrote that she was “starting today” which was 10/26/2011 P.M. so I figured you meant 10/27/2011. So I recorded the soap and watched this morning. There was no Diana.

I go back to look at the thread and the pic caption says Diana starts 10/31. So, I guess she will actually appear sometime this month or next, right? Kudos! ;-)

The Plymouth has new points and the carburator rebuilt so we are ready to head to Florida in the morning for a week of rest and relaxation. Would be better if it were just me and the Plymouth but my wife is coming along as well despite being allergic to the sun and sand and salt water and the Plymouth and Florida as well but do not get me started please.

Just came from Barnes & Noble, se that Kelly Clarkson, Adele and Scotty McCreery have their new albums all side-by-side in the top display area for recent release albums.

Anyone seen the news around the net on Stacy Francis, one of the X-Factor top 12? Seems there is a lot more to her back-story than what the show is painting a picture of, in terms of previous work in the entertainment industry, and parts in T.V. shows, etc. A wee bit different than the X-Factor story they are using.

Thanks for the news Seth. VFTW, a site that I hate, and for good reason, also has information. Of course, they twist it in a way that only they can, but it still gives you an idea of her past accomplishments.

Chris Daughtry singing the National Anthem last night at the World Series. He does a good job and his voice maintains its rocker edge while being respectful of the music.

Wait… you mean that the producers of a show would make a conscious and deliberate effort to influence the viewers’ perception of a contestant in order to possibly garner sympathy for that contestant?

They wouldn’t do that…. would they?

Great article, Mercedes! Thanks for posting, D. You’ve got to be happy for someone like Kelly!

As for Paul, I wouldn’t mind knowing what he’s doing besides being Mr.Reid. He was the one who gave the cautionary tale to the Idol contestants about reality after Idol.

Twice in about 5 minutes Pandora Radio has run ads for a new Adam Sandler movie (Jack and Jill) where he plays both of the title characters – twins.

Not only am I not going to be running to see it… I’m going to be running away from it as fast as I can.

Why is it that when a comedian has just about run the gamut of everything he can do to make us laugh, he starts dressing in drag?

Good question, Deirdre. However, there have been a couple of very good movies, IMO, where the actor wore drag. These 3 come to mind: Some Like It Hot, Tootsie, Victor/Victoria

Those were all actors rather than comedians. A comedian like Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell, who are admittedly making a small fortune doing movies with basically the same plot over and over again seem to frequently go for that last resort. Adam Sandler had stepped, imo, into another arena when he made Grown-ups, which was a sweet-natured, funny film. Then he gets Jennifer Aniston to do an awful movie with him and now he’s in drag.

Well, we beat Florida! Definitely a good weekend in GA sports!

Thanks for the Kelly interviews. She’s always an entertaining interviewee. I sure didn’t know that she sleeps with a Colt .45. I sure hope she meant the beer, but I’m guessing no. Of course, if I were around…there wouldn’t be a need for that. ;)

You’re right, of course, D. Your comment just made me think of those others.

Dear G: I am a South Carolinian who was a “transplant” for about 15 years. I totally embrace the GA teams–all of them–unless they are playing my SC Gamec0cks! And, no matter that I live less than 100 miles from Charlotte and happened to be born there, I will always be a Falcons fan. In fact, I ended up on this blog because I missed Atlanta and GA so much that I went looking on the AJC site.

Two quick items:

1. The front page has a link that says “Pink Pig Returns.” It may be pink… and it may look like a pig.. but that’s not the Pink Pig us old timers remember.

2. While Haley Reinhardt is easier on the eyes… Id’ rather listen to Adele.
